Saturday we headed over to the tile store bright and early to purchase the tile we'll need for our master bath shower re-do. I'm going to start abbreviating that MBSR because its too much to type, especially when you have a headache. Anyway, the tile store is always a little overwhelming to me. We know what we like but then I get in there and see the number of choices and it all becomes a giant blur. Hubs and I are amazing though. We can walk into a tile store and glance at their selection of no less than twenty hundred tiles and we always, without fail, make a beeline to the most expensive option. Of course once we see that one everything else pales in comparison. The lady making a purchase beside us went for a style that was $5.95 per square foot. Ours was not. Perhaps that explains why I've had a headache for two days?
We finally got out of there (oh, the math!) and drove on into the city to meet some friends. Old friends...friends we got to know when we were both living in the UK. They are Texans and we haven't seen them in person since they moved back to the Lone Star State in 2007. The minute I laid eyes on them though, the years in between just rolled right away...don't you love friendships like that?
Since it was chilly (especially for Texans!) we had arranged to meet at the American Museum of Natural History. I think it was full of stuffed animals and dinosaur bones and oh there were also some gems...I remember the sparkly bits. Mostly we just walked and talked and we didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the exhibits because, hello... we had some serious catching up to do!
After we'd roamed around inside for a while we went out into the daylight to find a place for lunch. We ended up in a restaurant we'd eaten in once before and they put us in a cozy corner table where we had our lovely lunch and more talk. They are the parents of two boys and we have two girls and the four of them were all pals back in the day. In fact Daughter1 went to the prom her Junior year of high school with their son1.
Doesn't her hair look beautiful?
I miss my UK hairdresser.
Where was I? Oh yeah. I have a headache. And we were in NYC. After lunch the sun was shining and it felt warm enough for a walk thru Central Park so that's what we did-
We wandered and we talked.
Mostly we talked.
And said goodbye too soon.
I wish they were still just a few streets away.
I wish they were still close enough to say, 'Hey, let's meet for dinner...lunch...coffee...a walk...a trip to Italy to shop for pottery."
If I'm wishing I might as well go big, right?
She would totally agree.
They have a child getting married this summer. I still picture him in grade 11 but somehow our 'kids' are old enough to be out of university and on their own and getting married. Married? Hmmm...that doesn't sound right.
Sigh.
I guess it is.
Next time we see these friends we hope we're all sitting in the warm Texas sun watching their 'child' say I do. I'll bring the kleenex... we all know it's the little things, right?

it's a million little things."

oh sorry you have a headache! Looks like a nice day and so nice to meet old friends you haven't seen in awhile.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about the headache...Those two-day headaches are no fun :( I've had several lately--and I'm not choosing tile!!! I hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI love friendships like the one you spoke of. I spent Friday with a friend like that--from high school. Yay for good friends!
I loved the pic of your hubby and the friend with what I assume is NY in the background!
Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
andrea
wonderful pictures!
ReplyDeleteoh, how i love friendships like that. *sigh*
my oldest turns 11 tomorrow. you will find me in a box of kleenex.
Sorry about your headache. NOT a good way to start the week. Sounds like you had a fun weekend though. Old friends are the best. :)
ReplyDeleteI say take a nap this afternoon. When you wake up have some tea by your big window sitting in the warmth of the sun without having to feel the chill of the wind. Then order out tonight.
ReplyDeleteCity always looks like such fun too.
What an awesome Saturday you had, even if part of your plans may have precipitated a 2-day headache. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHope your headache leaves *soon*!
Hope your headache is getting better...those can sure make you feel awful! Sounds like your Saturday couldn't have been more perfect. I keep telling myself that ONE DAY, I'll make it to NYC and be able to do all the things that so many people talk about.
ReplyDeleteWell, do hope the headache is gone. They can sure ruin a good day. :o)
ReplyDeleteJust nothing like old friends and as you said, you just pick right up where you left off.
I know what you mean about seeing and liking the most expensive tile, "been there, done that." Ugh!
A happy Monday to you!
I love friendships like that! Sorry about your headache, hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteGetting together with old dear friends that you haven't seen in a long time is so wonderful. I hate being 1400 mile away from my best friend...and while I'm grateful for the internet to keep us connected, it's not the same as being together.
ReplyDeleteYour daughter's hair does look beautiful!
I do have one question...my blogger dashboard had your next Wednesday Hodgepodge questions blog listed, but it's not here...just wondering if it would be back up soon? :D
Sounds like the perfect day, but I'm so sorry you have a headache. Hope it goes away quickly.
ReplyDeleteHope your feeling better. Sounds like a wonderful time with old friends despite the headache.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed week!!!
We're sisters in soul! I also have a terrible headache, and yet, I cannot stop. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteDo you want me to send you the questions again? All but #7 were on my reader.
Those two day headaches are killers. Just one more sign of "our age." Ugh. I finally got a prescription for them and then what do you know - I stopped having 'em. Bother. At least they're gone. Ha
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing when given choices! So much so that when we were choosing finishes in our old house the Hubby knew to give me choices within my range. ha. He's smart like that.
Choosing tile (and writing the check for it) sound like headache inducing activities to me.
ReplyDeleteI hope it is gone by now.
Your time with your friends sounds like it was great fun.
I hope your headache is gone by now. Maybe reliving your lovely Saturday has helped. The NYC picture is great!
ReplyDeleteWe still haven't finished the bathtub portion of the bathroom remodel - I can't motivate myself to go pick out the tile. After reading your post I don't know if I'll ever be ready!!
ReplyDeleteWhat part of Texas do your friends live in?
ah ha (in regards to the Wednesday Hodgepodge post)...I knew you posted the questions on Tuesdays, and for some reason it felt like it should be a Tuesday today :D Thanks! It's a fun meme...I look forward to it each week since I started...What will Joyce ask this week, I wonder?!
ReplyDeleteJoyce, I love that quote. I'm adding it to my quote journal. Hope your headache gets better. And I know you really enjoyed your time with your friends. What fun to be going to Texas to see them again soon for the wedding. I love weddings!!! Enjoy your week. Love & blessings from NC!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post and how nice to have such good friends. I really hope your headache has resolved itself...they really do stink.
ReplyDeleteI love that quote too!
ReplyDeleteHope your head is better, that's no FUN.
Sorry about your headache. Now I know where you got your museum question from! Sounds like you had a great time. We have a set of friends like that. The moment we see each other it's like we have never been apart.
