Home Is Where The Hodgepodge Is

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then hop over and leave a comment for your neighbor there. Everyone is thankful for comments. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. Let's do our gratitude question first this week...what's the best thing about your home, and have you taken time to enjoy it lately?

Best thing about my home? The view.

Have I taken time to enjoy it lately? Absolutely. Every single day. There is never a day I walk out of my bedroom in the morning, see the lake, and feel anything less than a lot of gratitude for the beauty of what's right outside my window.

2. Do you like squash? Of the varieties listed, which one's your favorite and how do you like it prepared? Is squash of some sort on your Thanksgiving menu??

acorn, butternut, delicata, spaghetti, zucchini, crookneck (yellow squash), patty pan

I do like squash, all varieties really. My favorite is probably yellow squash in the form of a squash casserole. I make this one when I have squash on hand and sometimes add zucchini too. It's easy and delicious (Mrs. Hopkin's Boarding House Squash). I also love butternut squash roasted or as a soup.

I'm not hosting Thanksgiving this year, but I am bringing a vegetable and think I'll make it squash.

3. Last time you were 'squashed in' somewhere, or felt squashed?

Not exactly squashed but...hubs and I had sushi on Friday evening and we sat at the bar to eat. There was an empty seat between my chair and three gentleman who were talking business. On the other side of hubs there was one empty seat and then on the other end of the bar there were two or three empties, maybe more. A man came in and asked hubs if he'd mind if he squeezed another seat in next to him? Huh? Why?

It was so odd. He jammed this bar stool in where there clearly wasn't enough room to sit without being right on top of hubs when there were empty seats on the other side of the bar. We were getting ready to pay, so we just rolled with it, but it was odd and I wouldn't have wanted to eat my dinner that way. I was trying to decide if he was on a date with someone he hadn't met before, because it kind of felt that way. I mean we were all squashed in together so it was hard not to hear.  I wanted to tell him this wasn't the best way to begin his evening, but I refrained.

4. Have you ever played squash? What about other 'racquet sports' such as racquetball, tennis, pickleball, badminton, table tennis (ping pong)? Are these sports something you enjoy?

I've never played squash and only played racquetball a couple of times in college. I have played all of the racquet sports at some point in my life, but none seriously. Except maybe ping pong. I'm competitive at ping pong.

Hubs and I played pickleball some when the craze began, but then I broke my elbow (unrelated to pickleball) and we never picked it back up. The injury count is particularly high in this sport (just ask my son-in-law the orthopedist) so I don't think I'll go back to it.

5. Something in today's society or culture that feels like a 'racket' to you? If you don't like that one, tell us about a place you've been recently where there was a lot of 'racket'.

Personal property taxes. I own the car. I've paid for the car. I paid taxes on the car when purchased. Why do we have to continue to pay 'personal property taxes' on a movable asset we own outright? Real estate I sort of understand because you live in the community where schools and other services you require benefit from them, but vehicles and boats are something entirely different and I burn a little every year when I have to pay that particular tax.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

I've been running all day so am light on random thoughts at the moment. Who's cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year? What's on the menu?

  1. Your view is so beautiful. I'd never get tired of it either. As for Personal Property Taxes, we don't have that here in the UK but we do pay Road Tax annually on our vehicles which is "supposed" to be used for roads. Not sure about boats.

  2. I´m a little salty about property taxes because paying them proves that you own nothing. Even when you´ve paid your mortgage off, you don´t really own your home and the property that it is on because if you don´t pay your property taxes, the government will take your home/property. If we could get rid of boondoggles and changed the nature of schools to make them more about education and less about other things, the cost per pupil wouldn´t be so high. In other words, I think there are ways to educate students without the government being our landlords which is really what it is at this point. I was light on my random thought, too! I looked through my camera roll for inspo, lol! No, I´m not cooking this year for Thanksgiving and I´m excited about that.

  3. The best thing about our house is the view too and I definitely take the time each day to enjoy it. In our town even the real estate taxes are a racket... so much so that I don't mind paying the ones on the cars, trailer, etc. since they at least feel manageable but paying upwards of $13,000 on a house each year that I own free and clear kills me.

  4. Yes to your view! It's so gorgeous! I bet it's fun to marvel at the view in all the seasons.
Not cooking this year - not even a side dish. Sister in law has decided we are going to a state park buffet two hours away. Meh. It's weird to not even have to be out and about shopping for some ingredients for the multiple side dishes I have always done. Oh well.

  5. I didn't think of car tags (and boat tags) when writing about a racket - Alabama's are ridiculous. Your view is gorgeous. I know you do look out those windows and think "thank you God!" every single day!! My sister-in-law hijacked Thanksgiving so it is at her house this year. I'm taking several sides and desserts.

  6. I do not cook Thanksgiving Dinner but am always in charge of all the appetizers, so I make those and we travel 2.5 hours with them. I've perfected it over the years - they are either cold (cooler), warm (crockpot), or room temperature like my spicy rosemary nuts. Your squash casserole sounds delish - I forgot that particular dish when answering my question - my son's MIL makes the BEST squash casserole!! I'm glad you chose your view as your favorite part of your home - it would be mine too :). I think it will be one of the most important things to me if we ever relocate again.
I'll take you one further on the vehicle taxes - remember, we ALREADY paid taxes on the money we used to purchase said vehicles!! And last year was the first year we got our bill for my new car - because it is a hybrid the registration was HIGHER - what?!? We figured b/c it didn't use as much gas so they aren't getting as much gas tax from it :/
Thanks for hosting - you have made me a more thoughtful question-asker in real life :)

  7. Interesting what you said about personal property taxes. In my daughter’s county in Florida, a bill has been proposed removing the personal property tax requirement on a person’s primary residence that has been completely paid off. I’m interested to see how this plays out.

  8. Your view is amazing! You are so lucky to wake up to that every morning.
That is odd for that man to squeeze into the seat at the bar, people are strange.
I have seen pickleball played and it looks crazy, I can just imagine there are so many injuries.

  9. I loved your answers! That's so odd about the bar seating and the man next to your husband. I'm wondering if it was a date, too...I did that a few times on a date, we sat at a bar to eat. It felt less pressured. I hope you have a great day, my friend!

  11. Oh, I so agree about the taxes! Your home has such a beautiful view and the outdoor space is so pretty too. Thanks for hosting again and have a good day!

  12. That is weird about the man at the bar. Your views are spectacular! Interesting about the injury statistics for Pickleball. It makes sense. Old people and fast moving sports are probably not the best of ideas. :) Have a beautiful day!

  13. We go to family for Thanksgiving, so I'm excited for that!

  14. Why DO we have to pay taxes every year...for the privilege of owning something?? If only there were real answers!?! I would definitely agree your home has an amazing view! I'm not sure I would ever want to come inside:)

  15. Hi Joyce, oh your squashed story was indeed creepy. Weird and creepy.
I love your views, thank you for sharing them with us. :-)
My mom is hosting Thanksgiving, I am in charge of making the table settings.

  16. Nothing like having a beautiful view. We definitely enjoy ours. I'm glad you like squash. I'll check your recipe out. Sorry about your issue at the bar. Good for you liking ping pong. Like I said in my post, Amber and Dylan play all the time. Good point on #5. We are going to Adam and Gabby's. We are bringing some snacks. I'm not sure who is cooking. They may be getting something from a store.

  17. Your view is so alluring!! Taxes on vehicles and boats....why??????? I completely understand.

  18. What a view! I'm with you on the racquet sports...so many injuries. We pay a registration fee every year on vehicles in Texas. Is your personal property tax on cars based on the value or a flat rate? Our property taxes on houses are pretty outrageous here compared with those I have seen in other states, but we don't have a state income tax. We will be having a bake-at-home meal from Cracker Barrel at an air bnb at Lake Martin with the kids - can't wait! No real cooking and everyone together - the best of both worlds.

  19. You do, indeed, have an amazing view of the lake and the sky and all the colors that happen sunrise to sunset. Gorgeous. Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge! I am cooking for Thanksgiving and expect nine guests at my table. Everyone is contributing to the meal but I'm doing the turkey, stuffing, corn, deviled eggs, pickle plate, and rolls. I love having my home bursting with people and all the smells of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Blessings!!

  20. Your view is divine! I would walk out there every morning, afternoon, and evening to enjoy it! That is weird how that gentleman squished in with you at the sushi bar. People are strange sometimes! Thanks for hosting!

  21. I am so late getting into the list of Hodgepodge bloggers. Yesterday was filled with errands and home ownership responsibilities. After a severe thunder and lightning storm last night, we are camping out in the sunroom today, enjoying the remaining rain and the approaching 2nd storm. Oh, your view is so spectacular year-round. What a blessing!

  22. Your view is gorgeous, and I certainly wouldn't get tired of it either! I totally agree with you about personal property taxes. We really are overtaxed in everything! Double and triple taxed on many things too! Definintely a racket.
I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner, or most of it anyway. My oldest son and his family will be with us, and we just found out my second son is coming too!
I'm so late commenting on Hodgepodges this week but really enjoyed the answers!
