Decking The Hodgepodge Halls

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post. Be sure to leave a comment for the blogger before you because (kind) comments keep the blog world merry.

Please note: The Hodgepodge will be on Christmas break next week, so no link up on December 24th. We'll return to our normal Wednesday hop on December 31st. In the meantime, here's what we're answering this week...

From this Side of the Pond

1. What's one thing on your to-do list that you want-need-must get done before the year ends?

Re-organizing my closet. It's gotten away from me and I need to reel it back in.

2.  December 17th is National Maple Syrup Day...are you a fan? Do you like maple flavor in other food items such as candy, cookies, donuts, oatmeal, hot toddies, coffee?

I like it okay. On a waffle yes, but even then I don't want it swimming in syrup. Maple isn't a flavor I'd  choose and definitely NOT in coffee. I do put a splash of maple syrup on butternut squash when I roast it, and that's good, but otherwise maple isn't my favorite.

3. Time magazine names a person of the year every year.  The tradition started back in 1927 with a 'man of the year' but has since changed to recognize not only an individual, but also to consider the impact of a group, movement, or idea that most influenced the year. The selection is not always someone or something good (think Hitler in 1938 and Stalin twice).

This year they've named The AI Architects as their 'person of the year'. What say you? Is this a good choice, an obvious choice, a logical choice? Who do you think should have been named person of the year?

I'd prefer to see an individual nominated rather than an idea. Technically they did choose real people involved in AI but eh. AI has its uses for sure, but some of what it can do is still pretty frightening to me. I really dislike having to figure out if something I read is AI or 'real'.

What a year it has been. I might have picked Charlie Kirk as his murder seemed to be a tipping point in terms of free speech and civil political discourse in our country.

4. What's a city, state, or country you've visited that you never care to visit again? Tell us why.

Nothing springs to mind. If there are places I don't care to visit again it's generally because there are so many places in this world I haven't seen, and those spots top my list of places to go over places I've already been. I currently have no desire to go back to San Francisco or Portland.

5. Next Sunday (December 21st) marks the first day of winter (or the opposite if you're living down under). What's one thing you love about this new season?

There's a coziness that comes with the winter season that I enjoy. Sitting beside the fire, hot tea, a blanket, a good book, and nowhere to be.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Christmas, 1993
'
We can't make the clock slow down, but we got Christmas here right now,
Let's soak it up and thank the Lord for another one."

Merry Christmas Hodgepodgers! May the peace of Christ fill your heart and home
today and in the year ahead.

  1. The Matthew West quote is a good one! My answer to question five was similar to yours (there will likely be others that are similar :)). I mentioned Charlie Kirk... and shared a few thoughts... Agree about AI. Goodness. How are we supposed to know what is real and what is AI generated? Great throwback pic- what cuties! Thanks for the link up and questions- have a great day!

  2. I don't think I have anything left that I MUST do before the year ends. Though we have been talking about celebrating Alec's birthday while he's home on college break so I might end up having to plan a small party (they go back to school January 4th so I really should get on that!). There are lots of places I've visited that I don't care to go to again; mostly because there are so many new places yet to see. We loved the big island and Maui but I wouldn't go back... I wouldn't mind getting to see Oahu and Kuai though!

  4. I laughed when I read that you said you'd never put maple in coffee, and I thought it sounded good. Ha! I loved your answers...Charlie Kirk would have been a great person of the year for sure. His death has reached even more people than when he was alive. What a legacy, right? Thank you for always so graciously hosting us! Merry Christmas to you and yours, my friend. Much love.

  6. If I am signed into my Google Drive I can comment! I think I figured it out!
I feel the same as you do about many of the answers. Your girls are so cute and I love their outfits. I bet it's fun to see how much the granddaughter is looking like your daughter. I look at my niece now sometimes and think it's my sister. So crazy!

  7. Reorganising my closest is a 2026 problem. lol Mine needs doing but it can wait.
I hadn't thought of putting maple syrup in butternut squash, I need to try that.
What a sweet photo! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  8. Such a sweet picture at the end! I think that would be a great choice for Time's person of the year. I usually try to clean up my closet on weekends because it gets messy as the week goes along. Have a great day!

  10. what a cute pic!!
I'm kinda feeling the same way about AI.
I actually wish they had chosen Michelle Obama.
I can tell you're not from the mountains of NY! We are known for putting a drizzle of maple syrup in our coffee (for people who use sweeteners i mean). :)
    enjoyed your answers!!

  12. Thank you for a wonderful link up every week! It is one of my faves. You are the 2nd person to mention Charlie Kirk and now I am kicking myself by not writing him as well-agreed- Merry Christmas Joyce!

  13. Love that photo at the end!! Our closet is just not big enough. I sometimes wish I had one of those big fancy closets!! On our neighborhood home tour, one lady turned an extra bedroom into a very nice closet!

  14. Merry Christmas Joyce,
I agree with you regarding AI. I feel so badly that we have to actually say, "do you think this is real?"
    I enjoyed your random.
    xx oo

  15. Good luck with your closet. I agree with your answer on maple syrup. Yes, AI is definitely frightening to me. That's a good point on Charlie Kirk too. I like what you love about this season. Your random thought is adorable.
Hope you have a lovely Christmas. Enjoy each moment.

  17. Christmas without our kids is not the same ! That's why I celebrate, but not like when I was a young mother. The AI thing is not yet clear in my mind, I want to try it with the Gemini thing, but I don't dare, with the luck I have I will tell the AI to explode my computer ! Just chose the wrong words !

  18. I agreed with your thoughts on Maple syrup. I do add it to my candied sweet potatoes. I agree with your point on AI. I love the picture of your girls. Time goes by so fast. Memories are special, and we can keep making them. Merry Christmas!

  19. I find it kind of intriguing that we're both mad at the decline in civil discourse, even though we're on opposite ends of the political spectrum. I mean, back in 2002 when then considered far-right politician Pim Fortuyn was murdered here in the Netherlands, the right too said that free speech had been murdered, but in truth the opposite is true, since Geert Wilders (who is far more right-wing than Fortuyn ever was) likely wouldn't have gained as much popularity had Fortuyn still been alive. For what it's worth, I think the big tech companies allow for more right-wing "free speech" (which I put between quote marks because in my opinion it's hate speech) than they did in previous years, for example with Meta now allowing people to say being gay is a mental illness. This also illustrates my point, that most likely Charlie Kirk's death actually contributed to his side gaining popularity. Then again, the middle might also be shifting more left.

  20. Well I do hope you get some time to sit by the fire with the cup of tea and a book. Your life has seemed very hectic lately lol.

  21. I thought about picking Charlie Kirk too, and it looks like we had similar thoughts about cities not to visit again anytime soon. I chose Vancouver because of all the open drug use we saw when we were there in 2023. Merry Christmas!

  22. Happy and blessed Christmas to you and yours, Joyce! Your Hodgepodge questions do a good job of "taking the pulse", so to speak of sister (and fellow?) bloggers. Thank you for keeping at it all these years.
