Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you.
A quick word about comments-
I leave the link up for the week and if you have a chance, it's nice to visit some of the bloggers who come late to the party. Comments keep the hop hopping : )
1. I live in the south so we're pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way?2. Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?
I do like cabbage, but it's one of those vegetables I don't always think about buying. I love cole slaw, roasted cabbage, and cabbage as an ingredient in soup. I like slaw of some sort on a fish taco and I like to make cabbage with smoked sausage. I'm sure I'd like a cabbage roll too, but haven't had one in a long time.
3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?
Cabbage Patch Dolls were big in my girl's growing up years and they each had a doll. Eldora Charmaine and Judith Eloise. They came with names and birth certificates. I still have them and will give them to my granddaughters maybe even this year.
One of our favorite old home movies to watch is from the birthday where daughter2 was given her Cabbage Patch doll named Judith. This gift sent daughter1 into a complete tailspin and she attempted to negotiate with her little sister like a boss because she wanted to get her hands on that doll so so badly. Daughter2 basically carried the doll around in a football hold and this made her older sister panicky. It's so precious to remember. I'm sure they are smiling as they read this.
I don't remember people going crazy when I was a kid, as in lining up at midnight to get the latest thing. That was my generation of parents, although it was never me. I suppose online shopping has mostly put a stop to that insanity.
I do remember when I was six years old wanting a budding beauty vanity and getting that very thing one Christmas. Made me so happy, but I don't think it was a trend. Just something I saw, probably in a catalog. It had a little stool and a mirror and I think it might have come with some play makeup.
4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?
Playing Mah Jong. I'm the contact person for our neighborhood group and we wanted to recruit some new players to grow our pool so to speak. I put an announcement on our neighborhood facebook page, and turns out everyone in the neighborhood wants to learn to play lol.
5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.
Bye January.
I feel like you just got here.
You provided a gentle start to the new year which is how I like it.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
A neighbor gifted me an Amaryllis in December and she's a beauty...
Have a nice week everyone~

Hi Joyce, sounds like you made it through the storm pretty well. I have never made cabbage rolls, but I think I will try it. I still have a doll that I got when I was 8 and she is packed away along with my daughter's Cabbage patch doll. My grandmother made me a handmade Raggedy Ann and Andy set. I gave them to my granddaughter when she was born. They are packed away now. I don't know why my name shows up twice on the list. Maybe I will get a few more visitors! Enjoy the rest of your week.
ReplyDeleteYou had a good attitude about losing power and I agree. Maybe all this snow slows people down and gives them a pause. The amaryllis is gorgeous! I love the Cabbage Patch photo. My baby sister loved hers the most and carried it everywhere, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute memory about the Cabbage Patch dolls! Monday was a "catch up" day, which was nice! Now that most people can work remotely, it is not really a "snow day" anymore. I did some actual work and I did homework all day - in my comfy clothes!!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed this slowed down month quite a bit! Reflecting on it yesterday was a very worthwhile endeavor- thanks for the questions :). Oh my- all the typed instructions(?) information(?) pertaining to the game looks like... a lot for a game? I'm sure it's fun and that's the most important part!! Great picture of your daughter and her doll- it's wonderful to gift our kids something they love- sounds like you were the recipient of that kind of gift, too. Speaking of gifts wow, those flowers are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of rules to the game, but it's fun to play. The card gives you the patterns you're trying to make.
DeleteWhat a fun memory of the Cabbage Patch story of the dolls with your daughters. The snow/ice definitely slows us all down. I am glad your power wasn't out over night. I received one of those plants too and mine has just bloomed too. Thanks as always for the link up!
ReplyDeleteI have been watching the news about the weather in the US and it looks brutal! I am glad you have your power back and it hasn't been as bad as you expected.
ReplyDeleteAww! That is a sweet story about your girls and the Cabbage Patch doll.
How great that so many people are interested in playing Mah Jong!
The Amaryllis really is a beauty!
This was my favorite line: "I think the weather is God's way of saying slow down". I once read that people in the northern hemisphere PLAN for their "dark" season by PLANNING to do nothing, preparing to hunker down. . .maybe instead of "dreading" I should "prepare"? Ummmm. . .still. . .no. But your line "got" me - yes, that is it. . .we all, even His Son, needed time to rest.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder about later link-ups - I'll try to remember to come back in a day or two :)
How fun to be teaching the neighbors Mah Jong! It will be fun when they are all ready to play. I have not made any time to learn how to play, but I think it looks fun. I'm glad you fared pretty well in the storm and leaned into the cozy, slow down of no power. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI loved your answers! I'm so glad you didn't go too long without power. I'm venturing out of my home today! I don't know when or where I'll go yet, but I'm going to try. I need to get out! That amaryllis is gorgeous! Thanks for hosting each week, friend!
ReplyDeleteThat is so fun that you play Mah Jongg! I've tried to learn a couple times but I still haven't gotten it down.
ReplyDeleteThe ice as certainly slowed a lot of people down! A few of my friends just got their power on yesterday after being out since Saturday night. I offered my house, but they couldn't get out of their driveway. Everything was an ice skating rink! Your Amaryllis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt's always a treat to read what you write. 'Slow down lady', made me smile. What fun memories for your girls and you. That's a great way to build your pool of Mah Jong players. Glad your power came back on. It is so good to have a gas stove top for days like those!! We are getting excited about our time in Cambridge. Praying for all the things to come together, especially connecting flights. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful plant! So glad that you got power back quickly. You are right about God and January and telling us to slow down- so so true.
ReplyDeleteI think you definitely need a reminder now and again to "slow down lady" you always seem to be going at full speed - and more sometimes lol. I had no idea playing Mah Jong was so complicated. Glad you didn't lose power for too long. Our kids had a lot of snow but no power issues - apparently their snow was the fluffy type - the kids had fun on Monday playing in it but school was open again yesterday.
ReplyDeleteWhat a truly sweet photo of your daughter with her cabbage patch doll. So cute at that age. That red Amaryllis will look perfect on your Valentines Day table!
ReplyDeleteIt's impressive that you remember the cabbage patch dolls names! I have no clue what any of mine were called. I can honestly say I never ever lined up to buy anything! I always figured if it was meant to be I'd find it somewhere at some time.
ReplyDeleteThat ice is not fun but I'm glad your power was on. However, I'm sorry that it went out around 1 am and you didn't have power most of the day. Sounds like you had a pretty good day just staying warm in the house. I agree, it's been awhile since I thought about buying cabbage. That's a sweet story about the girls and the doll. Also cute about you getting your vanity. I've never played Mah Jong. It certainly does feel like January just got here. Loved your random. Mark's dad used to give me one at Christmas. They are so pretty. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the "slow down lady". That is why I like a good spring blizzard. ;-) Last year we had a blizzard in March, it was perfect timing. My husband and I had both been very busy, it was great to have to stay in and just be.
ReplyDeleteWe have a friend who lives in TN, he has one big mess on his hands. As of last night he still did not have power. A lot of trees down in his area.
Hi Joyce, I am a new participant today, after years of reading others' wonderful posts each week, today seemed like a good day to jump in and join the fun. Thank you for making this possible. I enjoyed your post...oh, and so glad you weren't without power for long. This winter storm has been quite unusual and rather dangerous for so many. Although it is quite cold where we live in north-central Florida, it's nothing compared to what others are experiencing. We are thankful and blessed, but also prayerful for the situation of so many others. Thank you again for this opportunity. I look forward to meeting some new people here.
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn't have to wait too long for your power to come back. We have been watching the news about you southerners and your inexperience with the white stuff and ice! stay safe! Enjoyed your answers!!
ReplyDeleteLOVED your story about Cabbage Patch dolls with your daughters. That was a fun question this week. I'm glad your power was not out any longer than it was. Sounds like you were ready for it!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your freeze didn't put the power out for too long. It really can be a nice way to slow down, as long as you don't have to get out. The amarylis is gorgeous. Mine was pretty, but bloomed in stages, so it didn't seem quite as spectacular. Thanks for the fun link up.
ReplyDeleteI expect if I lived somewhere that had really cold weather that caused ice on roads and cars and such I would find my mood affected. I wouldn't like not having power but have been through that before and I am sure I will go through it again and I will survive
ReplyDeletesuch an adorable photo of your daughter and the cabbage patch doll. I hope I read that correctly. January has been a fast one this year. Not quiet sure why? So fast.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce! I enjoyed reading about your girls and their Cabbage Patch Dolls. I'm sorry you lost power, but glad it wasn't for too long. Last week was cold for us, and this week is even colder. I'm glad I have a few sweatshirts to wear! My AC costs a lot less than having the heat on, so I keep it down around 70, which is still too cold for me! Stay safe and warm, my friend! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks for more good questions - I went hunting for old toys, and was surprised how much I found to say about cabbage!! :o) I am glad you were well prepared for the freezing weather and that the power cut didn't last too long. Your amaryllis is beautiful and it's great that it didn't get too tall - mine usually flop over, despite staking. I received one too, but haven't activated it yet. I thought I would wait till it gets a bit warmer...
ReplyDeleteThe Amaryllis is so pretty! I feel like Majong is having a moment! I've only ever played online though never in "real life"
ReplyDeleteGlad your power was not out for very long! That was the thing I was worried about, and thankfully we haven't lost power at all. I'm curious if our water bill will be noticeably higher since we've had to leave the faucets dripping all week for fear the pipes would freeze. I do agree that perhaps the cold winter weather is a reminder that we should slow down and appreciate what we've worked and planned for (hopefully we've planned well!).
ReplyDeleteSweet memories about your girls and their Cabbage Patch dolls - that photo is adorable!
I've never played mah jong except for the solitaire games on computer/phone. It looks complicated, but I'd like to give it a try.
Hope you're staying warm and having a great week!
Loved your answers. I play Mahjong with my aunt when I visit in Ohio. I would love to play here but don't think anyone would want to play and I don't have time to join a group. But it is fun. Loved the photos and your answers.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful gift from a neighbor. A gift that keeps on giving indeed. You guys stay warm and safe!
ReplyDeleteI'm finally catching up on reading my favorite blogs - it's been quite the January in our world. So glad you survived the ice and snow that you all were hit with and that you never lost power. That makes things so much easier to bear. I love the birthday photo of your daughter - the strawberry dress, barrettes and cabbage patch doll took me back!
