A Gritty Hodgepodge

Welcome to September and this week's edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. I appreciate all of the kind comments and messages sent regarding my mama. I'm going to ease back into the blogosphere today with the Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond

1. What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to doing?

Quite a lot actually. I took a look at my summer bucket list, which is admittedly filled with mostly simple stuff, and there are many things I never got to do that I wanted to do. I've still got three weeks to squeeze it all in, so maybe?

We didn't go peach picking this summer and I missed that. We did have a neighbor gift us peaches from their tree which were super delicious, but I love the view from the orchard when we go for pick-ur own.

2. Were you the student who sat in the front row or hid in the back of the class? If you could go back and take one high school class again just for fun, which would it be?

I loved school and was a rule follower, so was happiest in the front row. If I were back in high school taking a class just for fun I'd choose French.

3. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher (this can be applied to anyone who teaches, not just classroom teachers)?

Tops on the list would be they must like children. It seems like that shouldn't need saying, but...

Other qualities I'd deem essential would be the more obvious- patience, stamina, the ability to think on one's feet, flexibility, and the ability to communicate effectively.

4.  September 2nd is National Grits Day. Have you ever eaten grits? Are you a fan? If so how do you like yours? Would people describe you as 'having grit'?

Have I ever eaten grits? I live in South Carolina so of course I've eaten grits and yes I like them. My favorite way to have grits would be in the form of shrimp and grits which is a Carolina staple. So delicious! I also like grits for breakfast with a little bit of butter and/or cheese.

Do I have grit?  I think in areas that matter, yes.

5. What's something you're never too old or too young to enjoy?

Lots of things...a beautiful sunrise, music, going barefoot, dancing, a good nap...

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Speaking of the sunrise...

...some are pure gold.

  1. It's good to have you back! I'm sure you've been hugged a lot, seen many people whom you don't see often, cried, laughed and basically gone through every emotion during the time of saying good-bye to your mom. Peaches straight from a tree sound amazing! I have mostly had grits for breakfast (or as part of a breakfast type meal) and like them. I needed to sit in the front to not be distracted. Thanks for the questions and link up :).

  2. That is a beautiful sunrise! We never made it peach picking this year either. I do have my eye on some apple picking in the next few weeks though.

  3. I'm glad to see you back here, my friend. I've been thinking of and praying for you ever since I heard about your mom. I also loved all of your answers! I forgot about shrimp and grits, which is a favorite for me as well. I hope you continue to feel the love and support from those who love you!

  5. Please know that many of us continue to hold you in our prayers! I forgot to answer the part of the question about what class I would take for fun. I will have to think about that!

  8. I'm glad to see you back and know the past few weeks must have been full of emotions. I liked your comment about teachers liking children...so true. We have definitely encountered some who did not seem to enjoy the students in their classroom! Thank you for hosting the link up!

  9. Hi Joyce, that sunrise is beautiful! That picture of the peaches reminds me of the peaches in my grandparent's backyard. They had several fruit trees. Summer isn't over for us weather wise. We won't see changes until the end of October. I will bring fall color into my home. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  11. Sorry you didn't get to go peach picking. Good for you sitting in the front row. I never took a language. Good point about a teacher liking children. The other qualities are very important also. I like your answer on grits. Lovely answer on #5. That is a beautiful sunrise. Take care.

(*Chuckling because we both used the same title ... again.*)

  13. Its good to see you ease back in to blogging. You and others have gotten my 2am prayers lately. Picking fruit at you-pick farms is a fun treat. Sorry you missed out but how great to get peaches from your neighbor. Growing up we picked cherries with our parents. Greg and I have a fun memory about picking raspberries in England. I was nodding my head agreeing with your answers about teachers. Blessings and peace to you...

  15. Sending love and hugs. I have been thinking of you and your family.
I hope you get to tick some more things off your summer bucket list.
Ahh! I remember having a few teachers who seemed to hate children, they were totally in the wrong job!
    What a beautiful sunrise.

  16. A big YES to that peach tree view. You live in the most scenic part of the country in my estimation. Something to bring a gasp around every turn. Also a big YES to your teacher qualifications. I had an 8th grade teacher who never smiled and ate green peas with a knife. Teaching 8th graders may not give many reasons for smiling, but hey.

  18. You've been amazing, getting this together with how things are. I hope it hasn't been too tough, and you've felt supported. It was a great set of questions and I really enjoyed thinking back and answering them.

  20. Hi Joyce,
My family will continue to be praying for you and your family.
Thank you for the fun Hodgepodge!!
If you do plan a trip to Lake Superior, let me know. If you come to Wisconsin, the South Shores of Lake Superior, I will share the best of the best with you. :-)
I am hungry for a peach. We have a few apple orchards that grow peaches too. I hope to get some fresh Wisconsin peaches.

  22. From one rule follower to another, welcome back to blogosphere. I'm glad you've felt the love these past days and I encourage you to take as much time as you need to take care of yourself and your family. Everything else can wait. As a retired teacher, I've loved reading everyone's answers to your question regarding the characteristics of a good teacher. While I agree with all the answer's I've read, the one I'd add and that I found so important is having high expectations of my students and always letting them know that I believed in them! I love your sunset photo, too - pure gold, indeed!

  24. Regarding #3 -- I had a few teachers that did not seem to like kids. It showed and made their classes more challenging. But then the one or two who REALLY liked kids, they made such a positive impression on me and I remember them with pleasure.

  25. Uggh I have not been able to comment for the last few days. Darn blogger, I'll keep trying, though I'm sure others on some other linky parties I'm on will just give up which is a bummer. Thinking about you Joyce as you navigate this journey without your mom. Sometimes doing something routine like this is helpful. Enjoyed your answers.
