Luck Of The Hodgepodge

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, and be sure to leave a comment for the blogger there before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. St. Patrick's Day lands on March 17th. Do you believe in luck? Are there things you do thinking they'll  bring good luck or things you avoid because they're considered bad luck?

I'm not superstitious in the least so can't say there are things I do to avoid having bad luck, or vice versa. Some would call being in the right place at the right time lucky, but I believe God orders my steps and has a purpose for all the circumstances of my life. I might say 'good luck' to someone, but what I'm really saying is I'm praying God's best for you.

2. Forest-lime-sage-mint-olive-emerald...what's your favorite shade of green?

Green is one of my favorite colors and my favorite shade would depend on what we're talking about. If forced to randomly choose I'd say sage or emerald.

3. In Ireland the meal on this day is often a hearty beef or lamb stew served with colcannon (mashed potato mixed with cabbage and leeks). In the US corned beef and cabbage is the more typical St. Patty's Day meal. Will you/did you mark the day with one of these dishes? Baked-fried-roasted-mashed...what's your favorite way to eat a potato?

Corned beef and cabbage is a meal we love and it's a once a year thing here so I try not to miss. I put cabbage, carrots and red potatoes in the pot with mine.

My favorite potato is baked with salted skin and plenty of butter once it's opened.

4. What color of the rainbow best represents your personality/mood today? Tell us why.

Do you remember the colors of the rainbow by recalling the ROY G BIV acronym you might have learned as a child? It helps. I went down a rabbit hole reading about how color affects mood and found most thoughts ran along these lines-

red (love and strength), orange (joy and energy), yellow (happiness), green (growth), blue (sorrow), indigo (deep thoughts and imagination), violet (calm and peaceful)

I'm going with yellow. I'm answering this question on Tuesday morning and my daughter1 and my 3-year old granddaughter are stopping by today so happy it is.

5. Which 'lucky' quote resonates with you. Elaborate.

'Luck is not something you can mention in the presence of self-made men.' E.B. White

'Diligence is the mother of good luck." Benjamin Franklin

'Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.' Seneca

'Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.' Ralph Waldo Emerson

I'm inclined to go with the Seneca quote. I think opportunities come our way, but if we're ill prepared to meet them luck won't matter.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Not only did my daughter stop by but she brought these festive donuts to mark the day-

Our corned beef and cabbage meal was also delicious-

Happy Wednesday everyone!

  1. Your meal does look yummy. We ended up with take out last night as our power went out at noon yesterday and still hasn't returned yet. I like most shades of green as well. I'm wearing a mint green sweatshirt to try and keep warm right now.

  2. I could just eat corned beef and cabbage now!
I remember the ROYGBIV acronym I learned in school but didn't know about the colours meaning. I went with yellow too, it is such a happy colour.
    Yum to those doughnuts!

  3. I knew we had a lot in common as we answered some of the questions very similarly!
Those donuts look so good. I haven't had a donut in a long time. I love the chocolate long johns with cream (not custard) in the middle.
Your corned beef looks so good, too.
We had our second helping of it last night so now I plan to put the corned beef in the freezer for the Reubens and quesadillas.

  5. WOW that's interesting about the colors. My oldest girl was an Art major in college and we learned through her that blue is more associated with calm, peace, serenity, stability. Although it can also represent sadness.

That's quite the St Patricks Day treats!! WOW my hubby would love that :)

Enjoyed your anwer to 1 which is similar to mine, too!

    Happy hump day!

  6. I answered the first question the same as you! What I say instead of "good luck" is that I hope and pray the very best for them. The donuts and meal look delicious! I love what you shared about the colors and what they mean. I didn't think of that when I answered, I just went with the colors that make me feel the best. I hope you have a great rest of the week, friend! Thanks, as always, for hosting.

  9. I like your first answer and thank you for sending God's best to me. I'm a fan of sage. Definitely lots of butter on that potato. No I don't remember that as a child about a rainbow. I love what you shared about the colors. I'm just a huge fan of the color yellow, always have been. That's the quote I liked for luck. You certainly had a nice celebration with that meal and those lovely donuts. Have a beautiful day.

We make our corned beef and cabbage meal the same. We will have Reubens for dinner this week with the left over corned beef.

  17. I love the meaning of good luck being praying God's best. Having a daughter and 3 year old granddaughter come by does equal happiness! I remember Roy G Biv from school and always think of it with rainbow colors. Hope your week is going well!
