Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then go say hi to your neighbor there.
1. What do you make more complicated than it needs to be?
Perhaps a better question would be what DON'T I complicate? I know there are a number of shortcuts my girls have shown me on the computer/phone that I still do 'the long way' aka the less simple way, because old habits die hard.
2. What impresses you?
humility, courage, bold faith, quiet acts of generosity, and the sunrise
on a less serious note-raw musical talent and the Rockettes kick line
3. On a scale of 1-10 how picky of an eater are you? (1=extremely and 10=not at all) If you had to eat a meal made entirely of one color what color would you choose?
How picky am I? I'm a 10. Not picky at all.
There's almost nothing I won't eat. In fact the only thing that comes to mind is liver and I think my dislike of that goes back to my childhood. My mom would occasionally make liver and onions for dinner and I could not handle the smell at all. I do like liver pates which are nothing like liver and onions.
My girls, their spouses, and my grands are not picky eaters either, which is really nice when it comes to meal planning.
If I had to eat a meal made entirely of one color I'd probably opt for red-
apples, cherries, strawberries, watermelon, red peppers, red potatoes, tomatoes, red onions, beets, red meat...I think I could cover all the food groups if I chose red, but I'd definitely miss the greens.
I'd like a Christmas plate please-red and green.
4. What does balance in life mean to you? Does your life currently feel 'balanced'?
Hmmm...I'm not sure life can be in balance every minute of every day. I think we're always making adjustments both large and small, to keep life on an even keel. For me balance means I have an overall sense of well being (physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally). Sometimes I need more physical activity to regain my balance, sometimes more quiet space, coffee with a friend, or a good cry.
Do I currently feel balanced?
Not exactly, but like I said in my answer to the first part of this question, I'm always tweaking things and this season is no different. I mean I'm not tipping over but one side of the boat is a bit heavier than it should be and I'm working to level out.
5. If you could travel the world for a year what would be your first destination?
I think I'd start in New Zealand because it's so far from my current location and that's a place I'd like to see. I could work my way this direction without a lot of backtracking.
Sounds good to me...when do we leave?
6. Insert your own random thought here.
'And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property, I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company...

I had liver and onions, too, occasionally as a child and never developed a taste for them. The smell as they were cooking definitely alerted my siblings and me that dinner was not going to be a good one :). I liked these questions as they could be answered in a serious or more light hearted way (which I think is likely true of many of the questions- I just really noticed it this week). So much to be grateful for this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'm a picky eater . . .but when I started listing the things I don't like . . .well. . . I shocked myself haha! You and I had several "very similar" answers!
ReplyDeleteI seem to over complicate everything too. lol I do lots of things on my computer the long way because that is the way I know and feel comfortable with.
ReplyDeleteWhy did our parents try to feed us kids liver and onions? I remember hating it and everything about it but being made to eat it. Eesh!
Love those photos and those lyrics. I answered the first question the exact same way! My mom liked getting fried chicken livers from the grocery ready made counter. I have never tried any liver that I know of. That's great that you aren't picky and I was surprised by the color red but there are a lot of good red foods! My mom was an art teacher and took pride in a very colorful plate for the meals she made!
ReplyDeleteThe Arlington National Cemetery was our favorite part of our trip to DC a few summers ago- so peaceful- so meaningful- so patriotic. Reminded me how much I love our country.
ReplyDeleteI loved your answers! Red is a great choice for a one color plate...maybe I should have said that one to include meat. I picked green...but I would miss the meat. I feel the same about making life complicated...I feel like this is such a thing for me. It's really odd, when I think about it, but I can't seem to change it much. Ha! I love that picture and quote from/about Arlington. Have a wonderful day, friend!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love a Rockette's kick line! Oh, red is a good food color. I mentioned starting in Australia so we can meet there and keep traveling, sound good?
ReplyDeleteI almost started my answer to #1 with the same line - what DON'T I over-complicate! I guess I stick to some old school ways of doing things even though I know a "simpler" new way.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up, the nights my mom made liver for dinner were the absolute worst. She's a wonderful cook but organ meats have always been a hard no for me.
Love your random thought and the reminder of that song that I haven't heard for awhile and is so touching.
Hope you're having a great week and have some good things planned for the weekend!
I always make things overcomplicated too.
ReplyDeleteLiver is something I never want to eat again. I had a hard time with the balancing question but you tweaked it good. :) Your Memorial day tribute is beautiful. Thanks for that.
ReplyDeleteTrace's song, coupled with your photos, bring tears to my eyes. God bless America!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on #1. Old habits die hard. I could go on and on about the ones I still do. I love those things that impress you. Good for you being a 10 on eating things! Red was a good color to pick. I feel like you do a lot to keep in balance. When you can go, enjoy New Zealand. You random is beautiful. Take care.
ReplyDeleteGreat hodgepodge! Liver and onions! Haven’t had that for decades, but I am one of the few who like it…
ReplyDeleteI think liver and onions must have had a moment in the 1960's-80's. Now I never hear of anyone eating or cooking it. It was never a favorite when my mom made it when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteHi Joyce,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your random. It made me cry.
As you know we are a military family... I really appreciate it.
Love, Carla
Weirdly I used to love liver and onions as a kid and was the only person that would eat it with my mom (now that I know what a liver is and what functions it serves I don't think I would be willing to even try them anymore).
ReplyDeleteYes, red and green, please!! I like liver (sorry!) but can't do oysters or snails or mussels in the shell of any kind. LOL - gave myself a 7.5 because of those (and kale)!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, Mom would make liver & onions for Dad - since he liked them but she'd only make them in the summer so us kids could stay outside and she could have the windows open! We visited Arlington several years ago - definitely the top of my list of favorite cemeteries to visit!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your questions again! I love your response to No.2 . Those things are all really impressive and laudable - the one about bold faith hit me between the eyes only a couple of days ago, IRL. I concur with so many others about liver and onions - it's the texture and, yes, the smell. Now I come to think of it I tried oysters once, and that was not an experience to be repeated. Like accidentally swallowing sea water only worse! Whose idea was it to ever try them? Oh, and I forgot snails too; I went to a restaurant in France with a Japanese family and they couldn't wait to get stuck in - I could hardly bear to watch.
ReplyDeleteAs I said in my blog post regarding travel, I prefer to see the world vicariously through the photos of my friends. So, when you get to New Zealand, be sure to take lots of snapshots!!
ReplyDeleteI liked your answers
ReplyDeleteWe often had liver and onions when I was young but hardly ever have it now. I don't actually mind it but definitely not a fan of other offal. I didn't think of meat as being red when I answered #3
ReplyDeleteThank you for the poignant reminder of why we have a long weekend. Hoping we will make our Memorial Day trip to the national cemetery here.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. red is a good food color too! I picked green, but I love all the red things you mentioned. I'd love to go to NZ. My daughter went in 2019 and loved it
