A Guilt Free Hodgepodge

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Don't be lazy now.

Here we go...

From this Side of the Pond

1. "Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability." Sam Keen

Do you feel less guilty relaxing in July than you do in January? Elaborate.

Why does rest make us feel guilty? In this season of life I'm taking time to relax guilt free. We're not lazy people and while work is important rest is also essential. I enjoy having things on my calendar, both fun and commitment related, but I also love seeing some blank space to do nothing in particular.

2. What's a telltale sign you're upset?

I'm not someone who hides their emotions very well.  I cry easily and if I'm upset while talking I might cry. I try hard not to, but...

At other times I might go quiet, and since I tend to talk a lot going quiet is noticeable.

3. July 16th is National AI Day. What are your general thoughts and/or experiences with AI? Have you purposely used it? Does it excite you, scare you, or worry you? What do you see as a benefit? How about something relating to AI you see as a negative?

Well it's here to stay so I want to think about it at least a little bit. It's already tucked in to so many things we use every day so there's no avoiding it.  I listened to an interesting podcast recently on the topic and have linked it here (What Every Christian Should Know About Artificial Intelligence).

A lot of people ask if I use AI to come up with questions every week. So far no, except in all likelihood something has slipped through the cracks. We just don't know (or always think about) all the spaces AI now inhabits. I come up with most questions off the top of my head. But I also have a book of questions Marilyn gave me, there are websites with questions, and I google topical issues to inspire questions, so it's a mix.

I'd say AI is both exciting and worrisome. Like all technology there is the potential for misuse and actual evil and I'm sure we'll see that with AI too. Also I want to think and I guess the biggest negative I see is the temptation to become lazy in that department. I am rebelling against it as much as I can.

Positives? I think if a summary is needed for something AI can be helpful and a real time saver. While it doesn't actually think it does consolidate a lot of information in a short amount of time and that's useful in a lot of instances.

We want to take a trip out west and I was struggling with how to combine a couple of destinations without excessively long drive days so I popped my locations into AI and he/she/it? came up with a plan.  Since I'm not familiar with the geography in this particular part of the country I needed help and AI gave me a place to start.

4. You're invited to a summer pot luck and are asked to bring an appetizer, salad/side, or dessert. Which category do you go for and what are you bringing?

Depends on my mood, and possibly who else I know will be there. I would likely go for dessert because I like to bake and desserts hold up well in transport.

5. It wouldn't be summer without___________________.

A tomato sandwich, made with homegrown tomatoes right off the vine, slathered in Duke's Mayo. Yum! Haven't had one yet this summer, but it will happen soon. I need my daughter to share some of her larger tomatoes with me as we only grew cherries.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

So one of our state's senators passed away suddenly this week, and people are just vile. Sadly this is no longer surprising.

I don't know how we've gotten to the point of celebrating the death of another human being in our country, but here we are. Lindsay Graham was from our local area and hubs and I met him in person once. He was really funny. Did we agree with everything he said and did? No. But he served our country in the USAF and raised his sister upon the death of their parents when she was just 13, and both of these things I do admire.

I read a quote by Matthew Hennessey with the Wall Street Journal who said, "The best thing you can do when someone dies is say a prayer. If that isn't your thing, find something nice to say. If neither of those options works for you, there's a third option: Shut up."

You don't have to agree with someone's politics to be decent in death. We need to do better.

  1. Joyce, thanks for your time you put into these questions each week and you do a great job! What a great quote to remember at the end and I feel like that can be applied to so many situations in addition to death. Hope you get some rest and a tomato sandwich this week :)

  2. While I've never seen Duke's mayonnaise, I do love a good tomato sandwich. I often think of all the delicious fresh from the garden summer produce as the epitome of summer.

  3. I listened to that Alissa Childers podcast (I listen to most of Alissa's- I like her approach, her tone and her content so much!) and have listened to Allie Beth Stuckey talk about AI as well as Frank Turek whose podcast I linked. I have not been following the aftermath of Lindsay's death but I can only imagine how terrible some of the comments are. The quote you shared is a really good one. I met once when I met JD Vance (they were both very brief "meets"). Agree about AI- there is so much good and so much possible evil. God help us and I don't mean that flippantly at all. Thanks for the questions and link up...

  4. I completely agree with you Joyce- people are just cruel and ignorant too often. Lindsay Graham served our country for so long and we are grateful for all that he did. He seemed really funny so I was happy to read that. I love your answer to the first question. I am going to start making a conscious effort to set aside time or even schedule time to rest!

  5. I go quiet when I am upset too.
Good job with coming up with the questions every week and not turning to AI. It can be helpful but it does worry me.
I haven't had a tomato sandwich in so long! I skip the mayo and put a little salt on, so good!
I have seen the same this week, a UK politician was murdered this week and I have seen lots of people being vile which is so sad.

  6. Enjoyed your answers. Honestly, I don't know how our society has declined so far that we celebrate someone's death. Who could have ever imagined it?? Thanks for the podcast link. I want to listen to that one. I don't eat tomatoes (ugh) but that photo looks like a perfect Duke's commercial!!:)

  7. We are able to purchase Duke's mayonnaise here in Wisconsin. We love it. :-)
I cannot wait for that first tomato sandwich as well.
I agree with your random. We need to do better. Praying for our nation.

  8. I loved your answers! That tomato and mayonnaise sandwich made my mouth water! I had the best BLT after church Sunday, and it was so good..it made me want a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich, though. I haven't had one yet either! I am always saddened to hear people speak so disrespectfully about people after they die. I think that's one of the worst things you can do! I like that quote at the end and always pray for the family when I hear of someone dying. Thanks for hosting us, friend!

  9. I never thought you'd used AI for these! Though I agree it hides in things like google.

  10. I haven't had my tomato sandwich yet!!! The tomatoes in my area just isn't growing or tasting like they should, but I still have hope!! I just don't understand what has happened or how we (I) have allowed our society to sink so low we celebrate someone's death. I love your random thought!!!!

  11. Hi Joyce, I enjoyed reading your post. That sandwich looks delicious! I agree with you about how people can be so mean. Lindsay understood the importance of supporting Israel. So sad how he died, and I agree with that quote.

  12. I really appreciated your AI thoughts, very helpful. That tomato slice on that sandwich looks perfect. Ugh, people can be downright evil. Love the quote from Hennessee. The realms of Light and Darkness are so real and I need to remind myself of that. Hope the rest of your week is good.

  13. I do enjoy seeing those blank pages on my calendar. Yes, I can relate to your answer on being upset. Your desserts always look delicious so that's a good choice to bring one to a party. Interesting points on AI. Yum on the sandwich. I've never seen Duke's Mayo. I do like what you said in your random thought. Hope the rest of your week goes well.

  14. I actually bought an heirloom tomato last week and slathered some mayo on and a little salt... so good!

  15. I've heard lots of good things about Duke's mayo, but haven't tried it myself. Pretty sure we don't have it in Michigan - but that tomato looks so good! I see other comments about Alisa Childer's podcasts, I'll have to check them out!

  16. I grew up with Helman's mayonnaise but my husband insisted I try Duke's because that seemed to be what everyone else was using and so I tried it and that's what I get from now on. Oh, it's terrible what happened to Lindsay Graham and it disgusts me how awful people are. I hear it so much with the passing of Charlie Kirk, my daughter is always telling me kids at school laugh about it and they also laughed during the moment of silence in remembrance of 9/11. This generation has no heart anymore. I enjoyed your answers.

  17. I agree with everything you said. Sadly, people have become vile, and hatred seems to be the norm. Like you, I believe AI is already here, with data processing centers being built all over the U.S. Our church held a couple of workshops on AI and the End Times. Interesting, but mostly " the what ifs? scenarios," All we can do is continue to share the good news and not get distracted. There's a lost world to be saved.

Janice, I made a boo boo when I posted on Linky. Can that be fixed? Thank You.
