The Hodgepodge. It's Grrrrreat!

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. What was the last thing you celebrated?

My oldest grandson had a birthday a few days ago and we've had fun celebrating him big. There was a special dinner out with Nana and Pawpaw, a birthday party at home with his friends, and then his dad took both he and little brother out for a day on the river on his actual special day.

Go big or go home is our birthday motto.

2 July 29th is International Day of the Tiger. Besides the wild animal itself, when you hear the word tiger what's the first  person-place-thing-whatever that comes to mind?

Well I live near Tiger town so the first thing that came to mind was the local university sports team mascot. There are tiger paws painted on the road in to college town, tigers on hats, shirts, Tervis tumblers, flags, and pretty much anything that's not nailed down and even some things that are.

The football team has what's been dubbed the 25 most exciting seconds in college football with their run in down this super steep hill. The whole team flies down this hill after they've touched the rock up top, and every time I see it live I ask hubs if anyone has ever been injured here before the game even begins. He reminds me they're elite athletes as opposed to say someone like me who struggles to walk without falling on flat ground.

He doesn't say that exactly but pretty sure that's what he means. I filmed it once but it doesn't really show how crazy steep it is. So fun though!

3. The expression 'eye of the tiger' describes someone with intense focus, determination, and the drive to succeed. What area of your life are you currently bringing that kind of energy to?

If the question had been what area should I be bringing that energy to I'd have several answers. But right now I am not bringing a lot of focus and energy to anything.

4. What was the last meal you cooked?

Let's use the term cooked loosely. Honestly I haven't done a lot of cooking this summer. I mean I have but not the every night thing. For the past month or so we've either hosted dinner parties with a full menu, been at a dinner event or eaten out, or we've put cheese and crackers on a plate and called it a day.

It's been hot and I'm not super hungry for dinner when it's really hot outside.

Monday night we cooked. Hubs grilled the most fabulous burgers and also some long hot peppers we were gifted by my daughter's mother-in-law. She gave us lots of jalapeños too and some pepperoncinis, but we added the grilled long hots as a topping to our burgers and they were delish.

I made a quick cucumber tomato salad and some corn on the cob so if you call that cooking I guess I cooked.

Thursday night we'll have ten friends here for dinner so there will be cooking then for sure. Although everyone is bringing something so even that won't require an excessive amount of work on my part.

5. Describe your July using exactly five words.

road trip • wedding • houseguests • celebrate

6. Insert your own random thought here.

So, couple of things...if you're in the USA are you eating lettuce? How about eggs? What's happening?

I don't know if you saw this amazing rescue, but this 16-year old lifeguard on a California beach is absolutely committed to getting this 10-year old drowning victim to safety. The waves are insane and I admire his heroism so much.

  1. That burger looks fantastic! I was thinking about making dinners and how nice it is to have a small break from cooking when going out of town. Also, I was thinking about how different things will be in the dinner department when Alyssa goes back to school. She likes proper home cooked meals and is particular about various facets of the meal making process from the cut of the meat to how it's prepared to what sides are prepared. I've enjoyed making her favorite meals... but I will enjoy NOT having to cook every evening. When it's just the two of us, sometimes we'll snack for dinner or we'll have leftovers sometimes for more than one meal. Not so this summer! It's been a lot of work but I have the time and I do like to make things that Alyssa likes! I heard about the lifeguard rescue- what a hero! Have been avoiding lettuce from stores- will have to read more about the eggs and whether I'll take my chances. I go through a lot of eggs. Not eating them would be tough...

  2. The video of the football team was really cool to watch. The football players running down at the same time all the balloons were released really kind of messed with my eyes for a minute; it looked like the football players were flying off for a second! And the rescue in California was incredible. Wow...that young man deserves an award of some sort for rescuing that kid. I cannot imagine running into those waves, but he sure did do his job well! I haven't cooked much this summer either...I'm glad I'm not alone! Happy Wednesday to you, my friend. Thanks for hosting us!

  3. It sounds like your grandson had a wonderful birthday and the football team running down the hill is crazy but fantastic!
Oh wow! Those burgers look amazing!
I have heard all about the lettuce in the US. Eek. It is such a worry. Well done to that lifeguard!

  4. Ahh Clemson! I kinda knew you would mention that ;) We are not eating lettuce but we are eating eggs- should we not? What's up with eggs now? What a summer!

  5. Sounds like a fun celebration for your grandson. That's extremely interesting about Tiger town. I enjoyed the film. You certainly had a busy month. Those pictures look delicious. Wow, ten guests are coming for dinner. You do amaze me with all that you do. No on the lettuce but we haven't heard about the eggs. Wow, that video is something. Thank you for sharing it.

  6. We are avoiding lettuce...I'm ready for everything to be 'good.' It needs to hurry up though, because now that I 'can't' have lettuce I'm craving it. haha!

  7. Yes, you had to go with the Tigers!!:) Enjoyed the video. I love a positive, even heroic, recap and story!! And what about eggs? I have to look this one up. Good grief!! Happy Hodge Podge:)

  8. I am eating lettuce and eggs, though I quit salads that first week. The outbreaks didn’t really touch California and I don’t have a lot of options for quick, healthy meals…

  9. I am coming on over for a burger. :-) YUM!!
I was a lifeguard way back in the day, I cannot imagine those waves!!!

  10. What an exciting tradition of running down the hill! We have not had burgers off our grill this summer yet! Those grilled peppers look so yummy. I did see that amazing rescue! I have been avoiding lettuce. :) Yikes I didn't hear about an issue with eggs! Oye. Enjoy your dinner on Thursday!!

  11. Wow on the rescue. That is one of my HS school beaches. Life guarding is some serious work.
I'll have one of your husband's hamburgers, please. Oh man I love a good hamburger like that! I don't cook THAT much anymore. I have been lately simply because we have been eating out more and I feel guilty if I don't at least try to muster up a decent homecooked meal. lol

  12. Yep, we went right on eating lettuce the whole time... and I don't even know what you are talking about with eggs so yep I've been eating them this week too. I rarely keep an ear to the ground to know what's going on media wise so unless the supermarket pulls it off the shelf we're still eating it. Plus this time of year much of our eggs are from family/friends that grow chickens. I don't worry nearly so much about food outbreaks from local and small farms.

  13. Sports teams named the Tigers (or Bengals) were the second thing I thought of. That's a crazy run down the hill! I'd be scared of falling head over heels because I'm just a trip and fall hazard under the best conditions. LOL
The burgers and grilled peppers looks amazing! I haven't done much real cooking lately either. If someone else ie. a restaurant wants to cook for me, I'm not saying no!
Thanks for hosting - hope you're having a great week!

  14. Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce! I was a card-carrying lifeguard when I was 16, but lake and pool saves are easy compared to being in the ocean and surf like that! I can't even imagine it. Terrifying, for sure! I'm not sorry to see July go away, but am sure glad it brought you to Florida!! :)

  15. That lifeguard video - wow! I often tease my LSU fan husband about Clemson, telling him if we move to SC he can go to Death Valley stadium and cheer for the tigers, just like at LSU. Ha...he doesn't find that funny at all. :D

  16. I would trip over my own two feet and roll right down that hill haha! Wow - that rescue is amazing. Clemson and Auburn - tigers! Clemson is Auburn with a lake and Auburn is Clemson without a lake! I think that is from Lewis Grizzard.

  17. I did a large pan of roasted zucchini, squash, and onions the other night. Those are our favorite summer veggies. With old age has come a change in our appetites. If we eat a good brunch/lunch, we really aren't hungry for an evening meal. So, not much cooking goes on at our place. The rescue was amazing. Thanks for sharing.

  18. Yes, that life guard rescuing the young boy is amazing and such a blessing from the Lord. It's a thrill to see it again and again on the news.

Not eating lettuce right now, but yes to eggs. All of this seems to fall in line with the general predictions in Bible prophecy.

  19. That rescue is amazing. I wouldn't be going anywhere near that water!

  20. I am eating eggs, but we have chickens. I'm not eating lettuce though... which is putting a damper on summer salads...

  21. Your pictures show what kind of food I love ! this would really be something for me. We don't celebrate birthdays anymore, when Toby was little it was like you did, with family, then with friends and always a big birthday cake ! Now he is a teenager and in full puberty, so parents etc are not of big interest, neither gifts, what he likes is an envelope with some (a lot) of Euros in it or find the amount on his bank account !

  22. I enjoyed your answers. I did see that video of the rescue. Wow!! Your grilled peppers look yummy.

  23. I'm finally on my computer so I can comment on your blog! (IDK why I can't do it on my iPad - it's a puzzle). Anyway, I love, love your traditions of writing a letter on your grandchildren's birthdays. We just found out yesterday that, Lord willing, we will become grandparents next year!! Can't wait to see what is in store this next decade :)
I'm getting ready to publish a July recap post and I'm using your #5 prompt to get me started on it - ha!
One thing about never watching the news and/or never knowing "what is going on" is that I really didn't know about the lettuce scare. Or what about eggs??? I like marching through life in my bubble. My daughter is moving to Brooklyn and everyone says, "how do you feel about that?", as in, "OMG - all.the.stuff.going.on" - but, guess what? I don't know. . .ignorance allows me to completely support her without judgement, right? She'll figure it out - she's a strong, smart person following the Lord's Will in her life!!
