The Weekend Roundup

Good Monday morning friends. I hope you had a nice weekend. Ours was bursting at the seams, in a good way of course. Linking this post with Holly and Sarah for their Hello Monday recap party.

Thursday. Yes it's the weekend. Especially when your daughter and her hubs pull out of the driveway at 7 AM and you're left in charge of their three littles for four nights and five days. One of my friends says anyone can do an overnight or two with their grands, but more than two nights feels like a month lol. She's not wrong.

My daughter was a bridesmaid in a college friends' Annapolis wedding this past weekend so she and her hubs got on the road Thursday morning in order to be in town for the festivities. Our day here Thursday started with breakfast out at one of our favorite spots. The boys ate every bite, and I'm nervous about their grocery bill in a few years.

Next stop was Pet Smart because what better place is there to while away an hour than a store with fish, birds, reptiles and kittens? The kids asked if they could adopt one, but I thought I should check with mom first. I mean we grandparents love to indulge but a live animal felt like maybe a bridge too far.

We moved on to our next venue which was Lowes, an exciting stop for everyone as we all joined in the hunt for a particular lightbulb.

Side bar here...lightbulbs in 2025 are one of my pet peeves. Carry on.

We found one that is not quite right but will work, and then it was back in the car for yet another stop-Publix. In case you've lost count that's four times getting three kids into and out of car seats in a three hour span of time, and it was only day one.

Grandparenting is not for sissies.

Hubs took the kids to the bakery for a cookie while I grabbed a few things, and then it was home for playtime, lunchtime, and a nap for Little Miss. The boys watched a movie and Nana made tacos for dinner because that sounded easy and easy is good.

My daughter left a little gift for the kids for each day she was away and they looked forward every morning to seeing what was in their bags. I bought a few things for Valentine's Day as well, and having new things to play with when your parents are away helps.

I bought Little miss a pair of sunglasses that came with a unicorn case with sparkly handles, and she carried her 'purse' everywhere we went all weekend long, including the middle of the forest.

The weather was lovely on Friday, a little cool but we bundled up for a hike to a nearby waterfall.

It warmed up as we walked and I had packed a picnic lunch, which we ate beside the rushing water. Such a fun day.

I carried a backpack loaded with water bottles, snacks, diaper, wipes, dry clothes to counter the inevitable mud, and a jacket or two. Hubs wore daughter1's carrier with Little Miss in it most of the day. Let me just say there is no need for a weighted vest when you hike with toddlers.

The trail was muddy thanks to all the rain the day before, but we embraced it and everyone loved the sunshine...

the fresh air...

the natural beauty...

And digging in the sand...

The little brown dog came too, because what's one more? While navigating small children and a dog on a narrow trail won't be everyone's cup of tea, it is ours.

We came home in time for Little Miss to have a nap then went back out that evening for a Valentines' Day dinner. Pizza followed by a stop at the ice cream shop right next door for dessert.

So glad we got out on Friday because Saturday it rained literal buckets. Hubs was manning an open house for work most of the day so it was me and the three kiddos at home, in the house, all the ding dong day. I made sausage biscuits for breakfast, we worked a 300 piece puzzle in record time, watched a movie, played games, played with toys, colored, Little miss napped, we read books, read more books, and we watched the rain pour down around us.

When hubs got home we took everyone to grandson #2's favorite restaurant -Firehouse Subs. I hadn't been in one of these in a while, but their sandwiches were so good and the guy making them took extra care with our order. Everyone in the place was so nice and it wasn't busy so we took our time. The boys ate their sandwiches, then I ordered them each a second and they ate those too. Let's hope the price of groceries goes down before they enter their teen years.

Sunday Nana made french toast and bacon because apparently Nana cooks breakfast every morning now-ha. Afterwards we went to the nearby Botanical Gardens to visit the geology museum there.

It's free and full of bones and fossils and rocks. There's even a little room you go in where you turn off the lights and all the phosphorescent rocks glow, which thrills everyone.

We bought souvenirs because we're the grandparents.

After leaving the museum we took our little crew to Longhorn Steakhouse for lunch. I didn't have it in me to make lunch and dinner both, so lunch out was a win.

Little Miss went right down for a nap once we were home, but the boys played outside, rode their bikes, ran around and got muddy as little boys are wont to do and then I was back in the kitchen making dinner. You forget how much you cook with little ones in the house.

The parents will be back home today and we're all excited lol. I'm so glad my girl was able to have a fun weekend away with her Valentine. It's important to recharge, to reconnect as husband and wife instead of mom and dad, and it feels good to wear fancy clothes and sleep in a hotel bed.

I remember lots of trips I was able to take with hubs when our kids were young and needing so much of me. My parents and in-laws both, were always willing to come and stay and cook and entertain and do the endless tasks that need doing, and I am probably even more grateful for that gift now than I was then.

Oh I definitely appreciated it at the time but now that I'm getting a refresher course in the particular kind of exhaustion that comes with the daily parenting of small humans I'm feeling very tender towards my own mom and dad and hubs parents too.

Forty four February 14ths with this guy by my side. We still make a good team.

A Love-ly Hodgepodge

Love is in the air in this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a love-ly comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. Did you watch the Super Bowl? Did your team win? What's your favorite game day snack for whatever sport is happening?

I did watch the Super Bowl. Truthfully I slept through a fair chunk of the third quarter, but was really happy with the win. I grew up just across the bridge from Philly and the Eagles are my team. Hubs grilled wings and brats for dinner before the game and they were so good. My favorite game day snack would probably be nachos, which were not on the menu but are still my fave.

2. What's your 'superpower'?

Napping? Loading the dishwasher?

3. Will you do anything special on Valentine's Day? If so do share. Any thoughts on/about this particular holiday? Share a favorite verse or quote relating to love.

Daughter1 is in a wedding Valentine's Day weekend, one that requires travel, so we'll be home manning the fort. And by fort I mean the grands. We were invited to the wedding as the bride is a college friend of my daughter's, a sorority sister, and she was also her roommate in DC after college so we know and love her.

We decided to let the 'kids' have a weekend away and just enjoy their time together without us tagging along too. Also, we're tired and not up for another road trip at the moment. I'm sure staying home with the grands won't be tiring at all.

A favorite verse-'For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Romans 8:38-39

4. Are you a fan of the rom-com genre? If so what's one of your favorites? If you're not a movie go-er then what about a book you love that features a great love story? How about a favorite love song?

I like a rom-com now and then, but prefer legal thrillers, mysteries, or drama more. My favorite rom-coms are Sweet Home Alabama and When Harry Met Sally. There are probably others, but those two popped in to my head first.

Books-The Thorn Birds would be one of my favorite love stories.

Love Song-well there's no way I could pick just one. A few favorites are-More Today Than Yesterday by Spiral Staircase, Love Will Keep Us Alive by The Eagles, Everything by Michael Buble, How Deep Is Your Love by The Bee Gees, and for me and the hubs especially I Love You by Climax Blues Band.

5. Let's get creative...write an acrostic using the word L-O-V-E.

L-love is lots of things, including patient and kind

O-it offends not

V-values the other more than oneself

E-and endures all things

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We had our wine club dinner Tuesday evening and it was as usual delish. One of the courses was filet tartare with tomato short rib stock, soy cured egg yolk and pickled vegetables. Have you ever tried tartare, and if so what did you think?

When we lived in North Jersey hubs and I used to go in to the city and we would sometimes go to Sardis and order their tartar. It was served on a fancy platter with all kinds of garnishes and was so good.

While I neglected to snap a photo of the tartare I did manage a picture of dessert. Priorities, right? Dessert was a hazelnut crunch bar with nutella drizzle and whipped cream. Yum!

Thanks for joining in today...happy Wednesday and happy heart day!

10 on the 10th ala Valentine's Day

We've had a busy busy weekend which included a road trip, so I think I'll save my recap for tomorrow (Tuesday) and join Marsha In The Middle for her monthly 10 on the 10th today.

Feel free to play along and add your link on her blog. Every month is different and this month we have ten 'would you rather' style questions related to Valentine's Day. Here we go-

1. A cozy restaurant or cozied up at home in your jammies?

We typically try to cook something special or a little bit fancy together at home on Valentine's Day because restaurants are busy and often have set menus for the holiday. That being said, I feel like we've spent a lot of time cooking at home lately so a nice dinner out is really appealing.

This year we'll be in charge of the grands over the Valentine's Day weekend while my daughter1 and her husband travel to a wedding. It's possible we'll be dining on pizza and that's okay too.

2. Eat red velvet cake or wear red velvet?

I'll have the slice of cake please. I love velvet fabric especially around the Christmas holidays, but I prefer the darker tones-black, emerald, navy

When my girls were little I did
dress them in red velvet on occasion, but it's not a color/fabric combo I'd wear myself.

3. A heart shaped box of candy or a heart shaped piece of jewelry?

It would depend on the jewelry. Some delicate heart shaped earrings? Yes please. I love these from Kendra Scott-

The little Kate Spade hearts are also really cute-

4. Reese's Pieces or a Reese's Heart?

I'd be happy with either, but would probably opt for the Reese's Pieces.

5. Watch a Valentine themed movie or an action movie?

Is the Valentine movie any good or is it super cheesy? If it's the latter, then I'd rather watch an action movie.

6. A box of chocolates or a less than perfect homemade card for my person?

Can I just share the above mentioned Reese's Pieces with my person? They're one of his favorites.

7. Iceland or Tahiti?

Definitely Tahiti. I'd like a trip to Tahiti more than a cozy dinner in a restaurant or a cozy dinner at home in my jammies or a bag of Reese's Pieces or some heart shaped jewelry.

8. Would my Valentine want me to sing At Last or I Don't Want To Miss A Thing?

My Valentine wouldn't want me to sing lol. Are these my only choices because neither would be songs I'd sing?

If I could sing I mean.

Which I can't so there won't be singing.

9. Celebrate for a week or not at all?

I like the holiday, but a week might be a lot. Not at all sounds like the February equivalent of Scrooge. A single day feels just right.

10. A really sour piece of candy or a Brussel sprout dipped in chocolate?

Finally an easy one...sour candies are my favorite so will happily opt for that one.

Hope your week is filled with the things and people you love.

Be My Hodgepodge Valentine

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Everyone LOVES comments. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. What does love mean to you?

Wow, jumping in to the deep end right off the bat.

For me love is an action word. It's not just talking the talk which is mostly easy, but it's also walking the walk which is sometimes easy and sometimes not. If you love someone you need to be all in. Love is a commitment and it really is all the things we pledged at the altar... for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.

It's an easy thing to say 'I love you' but those words have to be given life, otherwise they're just words. Real love demonstrates on a daily, sometimes hourly basis, patience, kindness, and humility. It's slow to anger and requires putting the needs and welfare of another before your own.

2. Is love blind?

Maybe initially, but love that lasts a lifetime is not blind. I read a quote attributed to a Rabbi Julius Gordon that said, " Love is not blind. It sees more and not less, but because it sees more, it is willing to see less."

I like that.

3. How do you remember Valentine's Day as a kid? Do you have any special plans for the day this year?

I loved Valentine's Day as a child. We always had a party at school and everyone made and decorated their own 'mailbox' usually out of a shoebox. It was fun to choose Valentine's and then decide which friend would get which Valentine. Always one for the teacher too. It was simple and generally they were just small cards in tiny envelopes, and our parents were not involved in their creation lol.

Hubs and I typically make a special dinner at home, which we plan and cook together. This year he and I will be in two different places, but we do have a fun evening planned next week and will call that our 'Valentine's Day'.

4 Are you a fan of the movie genre known as 'rom-com'? What's your favorite (or one of your favorites)?

Am I a fan? I guess so. It would be hard to choose just one favorite rom-com but Sweet Home Alabama, 27 Dresses, and When Harry Met Sally are three I can watch again and again.

5 What's something you recently put your heart into?

I'm drawing a blank. I mean I don't do things halfway so if I'm working on a project, cooking a special meal, hosting guests, selecting a gift, etc I'm going to put my heart into it.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Spending the day with my newest little Valentine...

Wishing you a day filled with sweetness too!

Painting The Hodgepodge Red

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond

1. Pantone's color of the year for 2023 is Viva Magenta. Etsy's color(s) of the year are indigo and honeycomb. Your thoughts? Would we find any of these three shades in your home or wardrobe? Is there a room in your house that needs painting this year? Will you do it yourself or hire out?

I like to wear magenta but you wouldn't find it in my home decor. Same goes for indigo. Is honeycomb golden because I do like shades of gold in my house.

We need to paint the ceiling in our great room which is 18 feet high, so definitely hiring that one out. I feel like when you paint, one thing leads to another. In all likelihood when we have the ceiling done we'll go ahead and paint the entire room and then the kitchen/keeping room and then the dining room too, because they flow. I really want to repaint all of my bathrooms this year but we'll see. Like I said, one thing leads to another when we're talking paint.

2. Something you had to do recently that could be described 'as exciting as watching paint dry'?

The State of the Union address

3. Who would you most like to sit beside on a 10-hour flight? Tell us why? Have you ever taken a 10-hour flight?

Oh this is an interesting question. If you want to read about the time I almost sat next to Steve Forbes on a flight to China you'll find the link here (B is for Let's BACK Up). I was a bit overly anxious about the ensuing 14 hours of flying to register it was Steve Forbes until he'd already happily agreed to swap seats with my hubs. Darn.

If I'm on a ten hour flight honestly hubs is who I want beside me. I'm not a 'relaxed' flier and knowing he's there keeps me calm. ish. I've taken several long haul flights-China, Hong Kong, Tokyo, South Korea. Plus we lived in England for several years which required regular trans Atlantic flights and let's be honest. If you're crossing an ocean on an airplane it doesn't matter if it's 7 hours or ten hours. You still gotta get across that wide expanse of water.

4. What's something you did growing up that would get you into trouble?

Argue with my younger sister, tattle, literally telephone my mother at work to settle our dispute. Honestly I have always been a rule follower so wasn't in trouble too often.

5. According to Google the top searches in 2022 were- Wordle, election results, Betty White, Queen Elizabeth, Bob Saget, Ukraine, Mega Millions, Powerball numbers, Anne Heche, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Hmmm...what does this say about us? How many of these words did you search last year? What would you guess was your most 'googled' word/phrase/question.

What does this say about us? We're not deep lol.

I've definitely googled Wordle, election results, Queen Elizabeth, and Bob Saget in the past year. If I had to guess at my most googled word/phrase it would probably be 'how many miles from point a to point b'.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Hubs and I have been married almost 39 years, but celebrated 42 years as Valentines yesterday with dinner out. We opted for Thai Green Curry which may not sound all that romantic, but we both love it and don't have it very often. Afterwards we stopped at our local wine bar for a champagne toast, chocolate truffles, and a little live music.

Hubs succumbed to internet advertising and I am here for it. He got me one of the cards you've probably seen, where you open a box and something pops out. I loved it!

You might see a video. Or you might not. 14 years of blogging and technology can still get the best of me. Anyway, it was cute...butterflies came flying out and there was an explosion of roses too.

There were four photos of us in the box and a miniature red velvet cake.

So fun!

Love Is In The Hodgepodge

Welcome to another edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post. Then leave a comment for the blogger before you because bloggers LOVE comments. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond

1. Something you've done recently that might be considered a labor of love?

Christmas. The shopping, wrapping, cooking, decorating...all a labor of love.

2. What's one thing you love about being the age you are now?

I know myself very well. I know what I like, what I dislike, and where my strengths and weaknesses lie. I know what's important to me and I worry so much less about what others think than I did in my younger years.

3. What do you value more: careful planning or the freedom to be spontaneous? Elaborate.

Hmmm...hubs likes to say I sometimes have to be dragged into fun of the spontaneous kind and I suppose there's some truth to that. However, there are times I truly value spontaneity and a road trip (or travel of any kind) is definitely one of those times. I like a loose itinerary, but also want to leave room for any unexpected discoveries, feel free to veer off the 'planned' route to see something beautiful, and have time to linger over a meal we're enjoying without feeing pressured to get on to the next thing.

I don't think careful planning is a bad thing in and of itself. It's the inability to let go of a plan, to be inflexible when flexibility is required, that gets us into trouble. I love a plan but I can always get on board with a plan B when a plan B is needed.

4. A home cooked meal or a fancy restaurant? pink or red? watch the sunrise or watch the sunset? wine and cheese or champagne and chocolate?

All of the above?

Okay if you make me choose...home cooked, pink, sunrise, champagne and cheese. I know I cheated a little on that last part, but since I wrote the question I'll allow it.

5. What's your definition of romance? Are you a romantic?

The Oxford dictionary defines romance as 'a feeling of mystery and excitement associated with love'.

While we most often think of roses and candlelight I'm here to tell you a man who vacuums, who sometimes brings home your favorite candy bar for no reason whatsoever, and who fluffs your pillow and folds the covers back exactly the way you like them every single night also qualifies.

Am I a romantic? I believe in happily ever after so yes I guess I am.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Had a spontaneous road trip to my daughter2's earlier this week and have had so much fun with this little guy and his momma-

I was able to watch his swimming lesson on Tuesday...

He loves his bath but hasn't quite made up his mind about the pool lol.

The weather was perfect for walks around the neighborhood and chats on the porch. Sweet Baby J is working on some teeth, trying lots of new foods...

...and just generally making the world a brighter happier place.

Happy Valentine's Day Hodgepodgers!

My Funny Valentine

Happy hearts day everyone. A made up holiday maybe, but a good day to think about the people you love and remember why you love them. Let's make a list. Top five-

1. My funny Valentine is still funny. I won't go into all the details but hubs made me giggle as recently as yesterday, in church no less, and y'all laughter is such good medicine.

2. Recently I was having 'a day' and hubs said, 'go take a bath and I'll make an omelette for dinner'. A hot bath and a husband who senses when you're about to lose it and then springs into action before you actually do, is a keeper.

3. We make a good team. We zig and we zag with whatever life throws our way, and we are never in a bad mood at the same time, which I think is the key to a happy married life. One of them anyway.

4. He's neat. I know this isn't a big deal, but it's not a small deal either.

5. He loves babies, dogs, music, Jesus, the great outdoors, bourbon, fancy cars, old cars, fast boats, slow dancing and all his people, but especially me, very well.

I could make a list of the bottom five too, but why? Don't make that list, which is another little secret to a happy married life. You're welcome. Happy Valentine's Day hubs xo

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Loved you then-

And I still do-

Stuff On A 2020 Monday

Yes I know it's 2021. It's also another gray Monday in these parts, and I don't know why I say 'these parts' because I live in a neighborhood, not some remote cabin in the woods. Sometimes saying 'these parts' just feels right.

It's going to be one of those posts isn't it?

I got nothin'.

Let's blog anyway. Actually I have many somethings, but I try so hard not to whine in this space and the thoughts in my head feel a teensy bit whiny. Where is the sun???

On the bright side all this rain is not snow.

I might rather have snow.

How was your weekend? Did you celebrate Valentine's Day in some way? Mine started early with hubs walking through the door Friday, the most gorgeous red roses in hand-

For the record fresh flowers make February feel less February-ish.

We rarely dine out on Valentine's Day, or any day lately, but on Valentine's day we typically cook something together at home. This year our local wine store offered a 'to-go' cook at home special which included a half bottle of champagne, two filets, two crab cakes, and a bottle of red so that's what we did. Hubs grilled the steaks, I cooked the crab cakes, we added a wedge salad and shared a baked potato and it was all super delish.

We made a creme brûlée for dessert. I cooked and hubs fired up the sugary top and I meant to take a picture but wasn't quick enough. Oh well. There's always next year.

Saturday night our neighbors invited us over for a spur of the moment get together which was really fun. Fun friendly neighbors are a blessing y'all. It was just the four of us and we had tacos and played cards and listened to music and discussed life and marriage and summertime fun. It all felt very un-2020 ish.

I know!! It's 2021 but somehow 2020 is a better descriptor, don't you think?

I have three books going currently so read a lot, and we watched more television than is probably good for us but we do what we must in the middle of a rainy, gray, corona-y winter.

We had a fabulous Facetime with our grands, the highlight of which was my 3 year old grandson singing a new song he'd learned that is essentially Proverbs 17:22 set to music. He sings it with great enthusiasm and not a little drama proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that a joyful heart really is good medicine.

In other unrelated news, I'm hoping to participate in this year's April A-Z blog challenge and am trying to come up with a theme now. I do better with a theme, but blog content is in short supply these days. As evidenced by this post, ahem. Can I even write 26 posts in a row in 2020 2021? I'm open to suggestions.

Okay. I guess we're done here. Summer's comin'! but in the meantime let's find our blessings in the small things, k? Have a great week everyone!

I Heart The Hodgepodge

Welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave some comment love for the blogger before you. 'Tis the week for it!

Here we go-

Fro 1. Something little you are loving right now?

2. Red roses or pink peonies? Red wine or pink lemonade? Red lipstick or pink polish? A cotton candy colored sky or a fiery red sunset? A book-movie-or song you love with pink or rd in it's title?

3. What's something you currently have your heart set on doing-going-seeing-experiencing?

4. Who would you most love a heart to heart with right now? Is that possible?

5. Write and acrostic for the word L-O-V-E.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
<p style=

1. Something little you are loving right now?

This little punkin' for one...

I haven't had him on my lap since he was three weeks old and y'all that is just too too long. On the bright side, he's at the age now where he'll engage with us on the phone and it's completely precious. My daughter and her family are supposed to relocate sometime this summer and I'm hopeful they'll be close enough to hang with Nana on a more regular basis.

There are a lot of ifs and maybes in that sentence but we are definitely hopeful.

Her other little man is not so little anymore, but can still turn me to mush in an instant. When that Facetime screen lights up he launches into something important he needs to tell me or ask me or show me and there is honestly nothing better in the whole wide world.

p.s. his mama is little and I love her great big. She counts too.

2. Red roses or pink peonies? Red wine or pink lemonade? Red lipstick or pink polish? A cotton candy colored sky or a fiery red sunset? A book-movie-song you love with the word red or pink in it's title?

All of the above? If I have to choose I'll have the pink peonies please, a glass of red, pink polish on my nails, and a cotton candy colored sky. Although I think you know I love a fiery red sunset equally as much.

A book, movie, or song I love with red or pink in the title?

Where The Red Fern Grows is one of my all time favorite books, but I also thought of Redwall which my whole family enjoyed. We listened to it on a long road trip once upon a time and discovered my hubs does a great Cluny the Scourge voice. I know when my girls read my answer they'll smile because they'll hear that voice in their head.

Reading together is good for us in so many ways.

As far as movies go I think I have to say The Hunt For Red October (although I liked the book too). This flick is one of hubs favorites and if he spies it while scrolling the tv guide (back when my tv service allowed scrolling-ugh) this is one he always stops on.

Finally, Brooks and Dunn Red Dirt Road would make my list of top 100 songs ever, with or without the word red in the title.

3. What's something you currently have your heart set on doing-going-seeing-or experiencing?

Seeing is easy...my mom! I haven't seen my mom in person in over a year. It is looking like that will finally happen this month and I've got my heart set on it.

4. Who would you most like to have a heart to heart with right now? Is that possible?

One or both of my girls. Technically it's possible, but logistics make relaxed heart to hearts with my oldest rare. Our day is their night, and while she Facetimes us pretty regularly when the boys get up those calls are more about what they have to show and tell me. Which I love, but I miss talking to my girl who is wise beyond her years.

I talk to daughter2 more often, and of course I love those conversations very much. When I think heart to heart though I picture the three of us together on my porch with a cuppa and nowhere we have to be except right there.

5. Write an acrostic for the word L-O-V-E.

Love is patient and kind

nOt easily angered

it perseVeres

and nEver fails

My book club is meeting in person today (Tuesday). We've been on Zoom the past few months but it's going to be a sunny 64 degrees so we'll bring our camp chairs and sit outside. I am so ready for a warm sunny day. This month we read Hieroglyphics by Jill McCorkle which I thought had potential, but in the end was just eh. It didn't seem to have much of a plot.

I recently won a copy of the book Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas in a Goodreads giveaway, and let me tell you it's excellent. I'm reading it slowly because it's not light, but it's fascinating.

A Hodgepodge Heart To Heart

Happy Valentine's Day! What better way to celebrate than with the Wednesday Hodgepodge? If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post then leave a comment for the blogger linking before you. Share the love!

1. When's the last time you had a heart to heart talk with someone? A change of heart? Experienced figurative 'heart failure?'

A heart to heart? Daughter2 was home with us last weekend and whenever she's home we love to sit with a cup of tea and have a good heart to heart. Last weekend was no different.

Nothing springs to mind in terms of a change of heart and I haven't experienced figurative heart failure lately. Although watching some of these Olympic skiers, snowboarders, lugers wipe out might fall into that category.

2. Champagne, chocolates, flowers...what's your Valentine pleasure? Any special plans for the day?

I rate fresh flowers in the house as one of life's best simple pleasures. I especially love being surprised by a bouquet for no reason. That being said hubs often buys flowers on Valentine's Day and that makes me happy too.

We prefer to dine at home on Valentine's Day and generally will cook something together. We'll sip champagne and we might even dance in the kitchen just because we can. We shopped for dinner today and there will be dark chocolate on the menu too.

I still enjoy sending a few cards and sent one to my mom and my mother-in-law and also my girls and of course our little mancub too. All the heart eyes for that little guy today and everyday.

3. Are you a hopeless romantic or do you fall more in the category of practical and pragmatic? What's a gesture you find romantic?

I'm romantic, but not hopelessly so. I took a little quiz online (here) and we know those are completely accurate, right? I scored 83/100 which is pretty close to hopeless. A gesture I find romantic? My hubs cleans the shower and runs the vacuum without me saying a word. What's more romantic than that??? I find an unexpected thoughtful gesture-gift-outing really romantic. A gesture that shows there's some thought and planning behind it is really romantic.

4. Do you ask a lot of questions in life or are you pretty content with what you already know?

Oh I ask a lot of questions. Nobody's surprised are they? I bet this question made hubs laugh.

5. Your favorite power ballad?

Now this is a toughie. Pretty sure you have to go back to the 80's to get the best of the best. I'm not good at the 'choose one' questions, but if I must I'll say this one- I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner. Lou Gramm's soulful voice never gets old.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We put a bunch of bulbs in the ground last fall and I was so excited to see some of them popping up this week. It's not too early is it?

I don't think it's too early here, plus they're barely popping. I'd forgotten all about them so this was a happy surprise.

Hope your day is full of happy surprises too!
