Adventuring Through The Hodgepodge

Welcome to the weekly Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go...

From this Side of the Pond
1. What does adventure mean to you?

This word is used a lot today, so I looked up the definition because I was curious. Here's what I read-' an unusual, exciting, and possibly dangerous activity, such as a trip or experience, or the excitement produced by such an activity'

I'm not what you'd call an adventurous person, yet I've lived a somewhat adventurous life. I'm a mostly cautious person married to an adventurer, and as a result I'm often out of my comfort zone. Once I'm back on level ground, so to speak, I'm almost always thankful for the adventure, or at least for what I've learned from the experience.

For me personally adventure has helped grow my confidence, it's shown me I have hidden strengths, and it's definitely given me a greater appreciation for the wider world and all it's possibilities.

I think adventure looks a little different in the various seasons of our lives, but even in this 'third act' it's still exploring new places, trying activities new to me, and learning new skills.

2.  What are your thoughts on tipping? What businesses or service providers do you regularly tip? Do you resent being asked if you'd like to add a tip? What about when a suggested amount is presented?

I'm not opposed to tipping and try to be extravagant when the occasion and service calls for it. I love to leave a 100% tip now and then, especially if the server is having a bad day, but is doing their best anyway.

I always tip my hairdresser because I know I take up a lot of her time when I come in for an appointment. The nail technician always gets a tip. If our yard guy goes above and beyond and does something extra for us I'll add a tip. And I always tip in a sit-down restaurant.

After that it gets murky...I don't feel like I need to tip when I'm ordering at a counter and carrying my own food to a table. I dislike the cashier watching me opt for no tip though so sometimes I'm guilted into it. I don't really mind suggested amounts because math. But! I don't think the suggested amount should start at 25%.  I realize prices have risen, but 20% of the bill is still 20% of the bill, right?

3. I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream...do we? Is ice cream a favorite treat at your house? What's your favorite flavor? Regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, or some sort of non-dairy version of ice cream...what's your pleasure?

Ice cream is hubs favorite after dinner treat so I try to always have some in the freezer. I very very rarely have ice cream at home, but I do enjoy going out for it now and then. I love home made ice cream so if that's on tap I'm in.

My favorite ice cream flavors are rocky road, strawberry, coconut, and peppermint. If we're talking gelato I'd definitely opt for stracciatella and that's my answer for the last part of this question. That's my number one.

4. What's your 'back in my day, we____________________ ' story or saying?

Well there's a thousand things I could say here, but lately I'm wondering why we get heat warnings for 90 degree weather? When did this start?

Back in my day summer meant it would be hot. Really hot. It was summer and it was supposed to be hot. We didn't have ac in our house until I was in the third grade. School was never cancelled for heat.

I understand there are people who work out of doors, but in general they understand what they need to do to manage the heat. People need to bring their pets inside when it's super hot, but the ones who don't likely won't just because a weather person tells them they should.

This is super trivial I know.

Also...because this blog is nothing if not educational... heat warnings and advisories started in 1979, which in my mind feels like just a few years ago, but in reality was almost half a century. Specific heat-health warnings started in the 1990s.

Also...back in my day only old people said back in my day.

5. Somehow this is our last Hodgepodge in the month of June. Next week's Hodgepodge lands in July. Wow. Sum up your June using three adjectives.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Hello summer...

  1. I'm the same way with you regarding adventure. Except that I'm not married to an adventure seeker so I've lived a less adventurous life than many have! I think I would have your attitude if I were married to an adventure seeker. All I remember about the 1970's and the weather is that I believe that was the last decade that climate experts predicted a coming ice age? Then they quickly moved on global warning, acid rain, the hole in the ozone, etc. I grew up without AC. I am ever so thankful for it now! Have a great day!

  2. I share your sentiments about tipping and love your idea of doing a 100% tip. What a fun way to surprise someone!

  3. I said basically the same about tipping! I love your definition of adventure and your explanation about how your hub brought it out of you!

  4. I am not an adventurous person either but my family are and they push me out of my comfort zone too.
Yes, I totally get the being guilted into tipping! I hate that!
I always feel old saying "back in my day". You are right, there are so many more weather warnings now. I remember when we just dealt with it without all the drama.

  5. I struggle with the tipping when you order at the register, too! I was somewhere the other day and the first amount was 25%. I was shocked.

  6. A 100% tip - thats so fun! y ou KNOW you made someone's day on that one.
& you're so right. We've had school closed for WIND recently LOL - what? We'd still be standing at the bus stop back in our day

  7. I liked reading your thoughts on adventure and tipping. I'm glad you have an extrovert to tag along with and enjoy the journey. You have had some amazing adventures! There are so many things out there that have dumbed down people in general, it seems. Not a popular notion but 'back in the day' when I was teaching, and there was an influx of foreign speaking students they went out of their way to bring in anyone who could speak the language instead of helping the foreign speakers excel in English. I was loud back then in saying they weren't really helping but in the end it would hinder and hurt them and our country. It is so much easier for littles to pick up a new language. Knowing two languages is a good thing especially when one of the languages is the governing language. Wow...sorry for going off here. Thanks for listening...LOL.

  8. Sweet, sweet summertime! It's HOT in Texas. Another "Back in my Day" I just thought of - I don't remember it being this hot when I was younger! ha

  9. I like how you answered #1.
My confidence has grown with the adventures we have taken as well. And the ones I have taken on my own.
I loved what you shared for the back in the day... so true.

  10. I am not fond of tipping when ordering at a register, either. Speaking of heat, I know it was very hot when I was growing up. I don't remember my grandmother complaining of the heat (no AC in her house) but she always cooked a hot sit-down mean.

  11. your answer to #4 cracked me up (the last part).

Tipping is VERY important for a service well done no matter when you do the tipping (at table, on credit card, or at the register). I prefer giving cash as my tip and being a NYer our standard tip is 18% but for exceptional service/goods/quality we tip 20%. Always. It's proper and typically...especially waitresses and baristas, do NOT make a living wage that has kept up with these horrible economic times.

  12. I am with you on the heat warnings! These days, kids get out of school for it being hot! I remember sweating my booty off in grade school with NO a/c! I also am with you on tipping at a register, or drive-thru's is my thing! Tipping has gotten a little crazy.

  13. I didn't make the Hodgepodge this week, but I have enjoyed reading favorite bloggers' answers. I agree with you, when did we need to have heat warnings? Perhaps those in NYC and Boston experiencing unusual heat for a few days, maybe, but for the rest of the country, it is totally unnecessary. That's why we have Weather.com on our phones. Right?

  14. I agree about the tips. I don't like when they suggest a huge amount either. Or when I am carrying my own food to the table. We never have ice cream in our freezer. I buy it but half the time no one will eat it, except my 10-year-old, so we just get it when we go out. Mainly for her. I wrote about my issues with ice cream on my post but my husband was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago and my son isn't a huge ice cream fan.

As for adventure -- I have to be dragged to adventures by my husband too and then I enjoy it. I don't really seek it out on my own.

  15. My husband often pushes me outside/beyond my comfort zone too but I am almost always grateful for it after the fact (I might be muttering/swearing under my breath during but he's good at cajoling me along). We didn't have A/C in our house growing up- not even window units. I had never experienced central air until I got married and we built our house. We used fans and I remember sleeping with damp washcloths on my wrists or forehead on those really hot nights. But I don't remember all the warnings about heat, cold, wind, rain, etc. that we seem to get with every weather "event" nowadays.

  16. Your photo for "Hello Summer" could not be more perfect!

  17. I say "back in my day" way too often, mainly about technology and spending time outside. My elementary school was not air conditioned until we moved in 3rd grade, and we had an old house with window units. And the best story is the one about my best friend in college who lived in an unair-conditioned dorm at UT Austin. I lucked out and got the dorm with A/C! I kind of get a chuckle about some of the heat warnings these days.

  18. I laughed out loud at "back in the day, only old people said back in the day" !! Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce!! And I agree about the heat warnings!

  19. Great answers, me and adventure do not mix and I love ice cream, more info will be on my post when I do it later today

  20. Enjoyed reading your thoughts on adventures and tipping - and I agree! Stracciatella is a favorite ice cream/gelato flavor for me too and I haven't had it in ages. I laughed at "back in my day only old people said 'back in my day'" because it's TRUE. LOL Sorry I'm late in visiting - hope you're having a great week!

  21. Your observations and comments about the heat warnings, etc. are spot - on. Yes, it's supposed to be hot in the summer. I think all that has to do with all the hoo-rah about global warming. I think everything goes in cycles and the earth is in a warmer cycle now. It won't always be like this. People just forget how this works.
