Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger there before you. Here we go-
1. Do you think you're driven more by curiosity or comfort? Explain.
I think curiosity is what makes us grow, and I want to always be curious. That being said, we need rest and stability in our lives (comfort) as a base for dealing with the changes growth brings, so I guess my answer is a combination of both.
2. What non-food item is in your refrigerator or freezer?
I keep my 'face roller' in there. I'm sure there's another name for it, but that's what I call it.
And eye masks. I love them cold.
3. Are you comfortable with silence? If you're home alone, do you like silence or do you need regular background noise? Do you seek out times and places to be silent? What's your favorite place to find silence/be silent?
I am very comfortable with silence. Unless it's an uncomfortable silence and then I'm uncomfortable too lol. I often feel the need to fill an uncomfortable silence with a lot of chatter.
I keep my house mostly quiet during the day. Sometimes if I'm baking or doing household tasks I'll have my book or a podcast playing, but mostly I like a quiet house. I need quiet, especially after a busy weekend, emotional experiences, a party, or lots of people kinds of events. My favorite place to find silence? Right here-
4. Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping...which skill would you most like to possess and how would you put that skill to use today?
Well I think my hubs was just on the phone with an electrician so for today I'll go with that one. We're trying to switch our internet provider and there's some sort of blah blah blah with a wire and honestly I am depositing this whole transition in hubs basket. Just tell me when it's over and make sure I have internet please.
In general I think a plumber would be the most useful skill to have.
5. Do you lean more towards being too needy or too independent? Which do you find harder to deal with in others?
I suppose I lean more towards being too independent. Hubs might say stubborn, but I'm going with independent. I think it comes from years of being married to someone who traveled all the time for work and me having to manage all the things. So many things.
In others I guess neediness is a little harder for me to deal with, but that really depends on what sort of need we're talking about. There are people who are sincerely in need and I have all the patience and compassion in the world for them.
Then there are people who just can't be bothered to figure things out for themselves and ask someone else to do the figuring for them. Those situations are a little harder to take, but I try to always be kind which means sometimes dealing with another person's neediness.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
My book club met yesterday and discussed The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett. Have you read it? What did you think? Did you read The Help? If so which did you like best?

I haven't read The Calamity Club. Perhaps partly due to my independence, I tend to avoid reading books that are really popular. I may read an "it" book when the book is well past the height of its popularity. I have not read The Help either. I did see the movie. I answered question three very similarly to you! Thanks for the link up/questions!
ReplyDeleteMy husband traveled a lot for work when the boys were little so I learned how to do lots of things on my own as well but that said I am glad he's here to take care of the big things when something goes wrong as I often have no idea what to do and just don't want to have to deal with it. I'm pretty sure if something ever happened to him I'd move into a condo or something like that where building maintenance and lawn care were not put solely on me.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about the independence question. Yes, you did have to do it all with a hub that traveled. I think I liked CC more than The Help but I read The Help so long ago that it's probably not fair to say. I bet it was a good discussion! I am the same in needing silence and relishing it!
ReplyDeleteReally good questions - I had to think quite a bit about them and am still second-guessing some! Aagh! It's just for fun, right? :o)
ReplyDeleteYes, plumbers are really useful. I have recently worked out that my shower is not getting very hot, even though I have plenty of hot water, and that side of the pipe is scalding. So where is the problem! Do I need a plumber or an electrician? Or is it better to just stop showering...? Being able to do a trade would have more hassle than anything.
I agree that people who don't even try to figure something out can be infuriating. I see it in my oldest son and it's annoying. He's getting better though. I also said I am independent, though maybe stubborn is the right word!
ReplyDeleteI would like to read The Calamity Club. I have read The Help a long time ago! I also like quiet and need quiet!
ReplyDeleteI am curious about things but much prefer the comfort of my life.
ReplyDeleteI imagine the face roller and eye masks feel so nice coming straight out of the fridge.
I hope the internet issue is sorted soon!
When I think about it, I might be more stubborn than independent. hehehe I like to do a lot of things for myself.
I have heard good things about The Calamity Club and it's on my audiobook list to listen to.
I enjoyed reading your thoughtful answers. I really do enjoy reading everyone's answers to the questions and where they went with them, so interesting. Speaking of getting older it is a lot harder to recover after a trip and I'm struggling with that. Take care and I hope you have a beautiful quiet day...
ReplyDeleteUncomfortable silence is always awkward, but it happens haha I tried The Calamity Club and couldn't get into it, but hear so many good things about it! So maybe i'll try again.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. Two of us who typically keep the house quiet:) And, btw, I enjoy the deeper/meatier questions. I just need to start writing my answers before 9PM the night before. My brain has definitely gone to bed by then! Thanks for the link-up!
ReplyDeleteNice answer for #1. That reminds me, I have a face roller in my frig and forget to use it. Your quiet sounds very nice. Our house is usually pretty quiet. Yes, the lake is a wonderful place to find silence. Sorry about your issues with the internet provider. Nothing wrong with being independent. I understand. I think my family is tired of my neediness at this time. I love that you read. I just haven't gotten into that and I really should try harder. I did love the movie The Help if that is the same one you are talking about. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteInteresting questions!
ReplyDeleteI loved The Help and currently reading The Calamity Club.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your answers. There's true neediness and then there is just the other. Independence can be seen as stubborn, and I wouldn't know anything about that! 😉 Good questions this week. Thought provoking for sure.
ReplyDeleteHi Joyce,
ReplyDeleteMy husband would say stubborn too. Ha! My parents raised me to be independent. My sister and I were farm girls and we had to know how to do. My dad was sure of it. ;-)
Right now, I wish I was a Veterinarian. Our two cats are not feeling well. I think it has to do with their food, we changed the flavor, but not the brand. Hope they feel better soon or it will be a trip to the Veterinarian tomorrow.
Concerning independence I completely agree with you ! I used to do everything because Rick only started to learn French. But even. when later his French was correct he pretended I do it better !
ReplyDeleteI read The Help and also saw the movie. Very good. I have not read The Calamity Club. I think I have always been independent. I was six when mom had a 3-yr old and a baby, so I remember being off on my own, often. I walked to school, I walked to my dance lessons, biked to the pool, all by myself. My dad used to call me "Contrary Terri" and Joe once said to me that I didn't need him to help with anything. I have had to learn to ask for help and am still not comfortable doing it. Another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce! Thanks!! xo
ReplyDeleteI hope your transition to a new internet provider goes smoothly! I've read The Help but not the Calamity Club - will have to look out for that.
ReplyDeleteDamn good answers
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at being comfortable with silence unless it's an uncomfortable silence! Isn't that the truth!?
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your answers today - I feel very much the same when it comes to people who are truly in need vs people that are intentionally needy. I don't have much patience with the latter.
Hope you're having a great week!
I knew you would say independent- I can just tell and I am curious like you!
ReplyDeleteI am with you on number 5 and what an amazing view to sit in the silence.
ReplyDeleteDidn't read The Help but loved The Calamity Club. What did your group think? My book club gave it two thumbs up. I might be better described as stubborn than independent, too. At least until I can't get the pickle jar open and I really, really, really have my heart set on a pickle.
ReplyDeleteWe rate on a scale of 1-5 (1 is did not like at all and 5 is loved it a lot). The book received anywhere from 3-5. I rated it a 4 because I liked it, but got tired of the brothel storyline and think perhaps 100 pages could have been edited out of the middle without ruining things. Overall though we liked the book and it's a great one for a book club discussion.
