My theme this year is The Things We Keep: An A-Z of Ordinary Objects. My loose plan is to look around my house at the things I hold on to and tell a story as to why. Let's get started-
Day 1-A is for Aprons
I have a drawerful. Maybe two, but who's counting? I love a pretty apron and I like to cook so win-win. Remembering to actually put the apron on before I'm halfway through a bake is sometimes a problem, but I get there eventually.
There's something about cooking while wearing an apron that makes me think of my mama, and also my girls. My girls love to cook and have their own collection of aprons, most of which they were gifted by me. My mama, who I feel very tender about these days, was a far neater and much better cook than I am and she always wore an apron when baking.
Here we are in our aprons making quiche for my daughter1's baby shower nine years ago.
There's something that feels homey and a little bit old-fashioned about wearing an apron and that's probably why I can't part with any of mine. I have a couple of favorites-
I bought this one in the Harrod's shop in Heathrow on a trip to France with girl friends. How could I possibly part with that?
I have some Christmas aprons I wear during cookie baking season.
This one is probably my most worn because it's pretty, a dark color (iykyk), and the fit is really comfortable.
This was a gift from Daugther2 one year because 'stay tuned for letter H'.
Here are my girls wearing aprons, home on college break helping with Thanksgiving dinner-
Maybe when I look at my aprons this is really what I see. People I love, the memory and the moment of time spent in the kitchen cooking, talking, being together. The apron pings the memory.
I love this! I love aprons, but I never wear them, though I should have over the years. I've ruined so many tops by skipping one!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! I would keep that Harrod's apron too. I have a Christmas ornament from Harrod's from a visit to London that I can't part with either. In that last picture of your daughters, one looks just like your husband and one like you!
ReplyDeleteI have a few aprons but I often forget to put one on when cooking. Great topic to write about- to share pictures of your favorites and the memories to go along with them :).
ReplyDeleteOOOH my grandma used to wear aprons all the time. My mom rarely did. I received an awesome one as a wedding gift from Pottery Barn I wore once in awhile but over the years it became super tattered. I'm not really an apron person. What a fun topic! I chose the attributes of God. This is my first time doing the A-Z challenge. I did sign up via the link you posted but am I supposed to link my post each day somewhere? I found their directions super confusing. any help is appreciated. the A is written but i wasn't sure exactly where to link it to!!

Apron memories rank way up there. A great choice for your letter A.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 or 3 I think but none with any sentimental value. I do often forget to put mine on as well. I also recall older generations wearing short/half aprons i.e. without the bib section. Not sure how practical they were but they were often pretty.

ReplyDeleteI have a couple of aprons but rarely think to pull one out to wear. I always chuckle when aprons come up. My friend, Cindee (God rest her soul) loved aprons and her husband would give her one, randomly, now and then. She had to model it with nothing on underneath it. Yes, she told us about it. Naughty and fun - she always giggled. I enjoyed your great photos and wonderful memories. Don't ever toss one of those. Get drawer three ready - you have two more girls to teach how to bake, and how to wear an apron!! xo
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, I need to get out my handed-me-down aprons and use them for pity sake!! I have 'saved' them to pass along to my daughters and then their daughters. But it might be nice if the daughters and grands saw me wearing them a time or two before they inherited them. Loved this first post and know I will enjoy reading each post on your sweet theme. Hoping I can pull something out of my...hat...in order to join in the fun.
