Welcome to this week's edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then go say hey to your neighbor there. Leave a comment too because comments make the blog world go round. Here we go...
1. When you think of autumn what sounds come to mind?2. Is a trip to the mountains something you enjoy? What's your favorite mountain?
A trip to the mountains is one of my favorite things and I can't possibly choose a favorite. I live on a lake surrounded by the Blue Ridge. Boating under the bridge and seeing the main channel open up with the mountains as backdrop takes my breath away every single time.
My grandparents had a Colorado farm with a view of the Rockies which was truly breathtaking.
I'm also really partial to the Great Smoky Mountains which is where hubs grew up, where we've spent a lot of time, and where we have family still. Lots of Smoky Mountain memories in my mind and heart.
And then I've always been a little bit obsessed with Mt. Rainier. My daughter1 lived in Tacoma for several years when she was first married and you could see the mountain from her neighborhood. Swoon.
We got up close to it on one of our trips there and she's a beauty.
Wait. The Alps. I forgot the Alps. How did I forget the Alps?
The village of Chamonix with Mt. Blanc looming large is pretty spectacular.
Are all mountains spectacular? I'm going to say yes. Did you come here today to see my scrapbook of beautiful mountains?
3. What's something that once felt like a mountain, but is now just a molehill?
Retirement. There's so much to figure out and understand in the early days, and while there are still things to figure out, we've got this. It's no longer a mountain.
- pumpkin spice latte or chai latte
- apple cider or hot chocolate
- stew or chili
- sweet potato casserole or green bean casserole
- butternut squash soup or creamy mushroom soup
- cranberry sauce or gravy
5. Sum up your September in a sentence or two.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I was with friends this past weekend and we spent an afternoon wandering around our old university. The campus is still so beautiful.
Question-why are college kids so stressed out? They can literally take a slide from their dorm and grab Chick-fil-A in the student center.
We were typing papers on actual typewriters for professors who literally measured the margins with a ruler. Then we'd go to Kinkos at 1 AM to make copies because copiers were rare and kind of expensive. Kinkos was open 24/7 for just such a purpose.

I did think I'd see a mountain picture or two in your post!! Great pics- I've never lived near any mountains so they've always represented travel to me as well as an example of God's handiwork :). That slide is something! Students have it easier in many ways then back in our day but harder in many ways, too- social media stresses them out and the constant barrage of news and little snippets of videos cannot be super beneficial to their minds. Thanks for the questions and link up :).
ReplyDeleteYour mountain scrapbook is well worth visiting for! I have never seen the Rockies but I'd like to. The Alps really are beautiful and your photo is postcard quality!
ReplyDeleteI'm bemused by the slide! It looks fun!
You are a mountain girl! They can take a slide? Wow! I agree - why is college stressful? It's one of the most fun times of your life.
ReplyDeleteLove your pictures and these questions today!
I enjoyed all of your answers! Those mountains are all spectacular in their own way. It would be hard for me to pick if I were you as well...but the ones surrounding your lake just might win, if it were me. Nothing says home like a gorgeous backdrop! The random thought had me smiling. You are so right! Our times made us strong and resourceful. Thanks for hosting us again today, my friend!
ReplyDeleteA slide from the dorm? Oh! I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteAhh! I forgot about the geese! We always get them flying over here.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to live so close to the mountains. Fab photos!
It sounds like your September flew over but it felt the same here, blink and it's gone!
hahaha! That slide did make me laugh out loud. How cool!
YES YES YES to your random thought- I mean seriously? We had it so so hard...just hoping these kids know how to have work ethic when they get out in the real world....ahhh now I sound old ;)
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can say about college kids being stressed is that there's a ton of pressure to make ALL that money count, and it's worse because college degrees are a dime a dozen now so the competition for future careers is fierce. But yeah, they have a it a lot easier in terms of technology. I am younger than you but I went into college without a computer; I had the fancy typewriter - word processor - and it was pretty antiquated even then. Finally got a computer with Windows 3.1 but then, I didn't have a printer and I had to walk to the Union and print it there before class! Also, it's supposed to rain this weekend and our lows are 60s and highs only low 70s so I was totally thinking about chili!
ReplyDeleteAh memories of Kinko's and typewriters. I remember my roommate in college got a "word processor" around junior year. It was so incredible to type on the little green screen and edit before it typed out the copy. I liked hearing your reassuring words about retirement. And YES to all the mountains! As always, thanks for hosting this fun link party.
ReplyDeleteOh man, I forgot all about having to go to kinkos! What fun those slides are! Yes and amen to the glory of seeing layers of mountains every day. What a glorious privilege that is. Love all your layered mountain photos! I'm absent from hodgepodge today and next Wednesday but I'll be back, Lord willing.
ReplyDeleteI love mountains, period! You can always get a big "wow" out of me when I look at God's handiwork! Fun Hodgepodge!
ReplyDeleteThat's a terrific slide! Oh, typewriters... I took typing class in high school. We used manuals, and one special week per student we used electrics. I'm glad I took the class, keyboards haven't changed. At least mine haven't.

I love all the mountain photos you shared. Whenever we talk about what they call a mountain here in Wisconsin, people from out West will chuckle and say, "we call that a hill."
ReplyDeleteI already commented on someone else's post that I don't think I could pick a favorite mountain (or range); they're all my favorites! How cool that your old camp us has a slide for students?
ReplyDeletegreat pics!! and of course, me being the mountain lover that I am loved this meme!!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics of the mountains Joyce.
ReplyDeleteWe liked the same foods in #4. I haven't visited the Alps, but I do remember the beauty when we flew over them, going into Italy. I tried to take a picture, but it didn't turn out. Terrible camera with only 10 pixels back then! Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce!! xo
ReplyDeleteGreat answers
ReplyDeleteOh my, I'd totally forgotten Kinkos! Much of our travelling has been reduced to the armchair variety, but the Great Smokies is still on my priorities list. I've never been!
ReplyDeleteI see you love the mountains as much as I do !
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. Sounds like you had a great September.
ReplyDeleteOh, and that picture of great smokies was so pretty. We love Mt. Rainier.
ReplyDelete. Those “layers” of mountains in the Blue Ridge are fascinating. I can see why you are breathless at the sight of the mountains at your lake. That is a beautiful view, for sure. And Mt. Rainier — that and Pikes Peak (in Colorado) are my favs.
ReplyDeleteKinkos. Wow. I haven’t thought about that place in a very long time. Printers at home are GREAT (unless you do something they don’t like. I like to say, don’t get crosswise with your printer!!!).
A slide and Chick-Fil-A WHAT???? Beautiful mountain pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe mountains are so pretty. That was funny to read about the college campus. I heard a song that said the good times go by so fast but the hard days last so long. It is so true.
ReplyDeleteI recently went to the homecoming parade of the college I graduated from. Note: it was/is a very conservative Christian college. Anyways, this one float goes past us and it was advertising a sorority (except we call them orgs, not sororities lol). I turned to my Mom and said "boy, if I had worn any of those outfits 13 years ago I would be in BIG trouble." My Mom (who is also a graduate of said college) said "trouble? I would have been EXPELLED!" And that is when you know you are officially old hahaha.
ReplyDeleteOn a lake surrounded by mountains sounds like pretty close to the perfect location to live. I loved all your mountain photos!
ReplyDeleteYeah college life is a LOT different now from when I was in school! I guess each generation has its own stressors. LOL I would have loved slides like that on our campus.
Sorry I'm so late commenting - Hope it's been a great week!
When I was seven, my family moved from Minnesota to Seattle, Washington. My parents built a home in the suburbs of Seattle and we had a beautiful view of Mount Rainer out our living room window. My mom loved that view so much and was so sad when my dad 's job brought us back to Minnesota four years later. During those four years though, we spent lots of time exploring the area around Mount Rainer. I have a lot of beautiful memories from that time.
