Hello Easter Monday

Good Monday morning friends. Also strangers and lurkers and visitors here today from both the A-Z Challenge and Holly (Pink Lady Blog) and Sarah's (Sunshine and Books) Hello Monday hop. I'm happy today's letter in the A-Z Blog Challenge is one that allows me to still share my weekend recap. Here we go-

Day 5-E is for Easter 

My theme this year for the challenge is The Things We Keep: An A-Z of Ordinary Objects, so today's post will include something that relates to both Easter and my theme. Also, light on pictures heavy on words but that's how this blog sometimes plays out.

Let's start with my Easter bunny who is more than 50 years old...

Many years ago my mom did ceramics and she made each one of us four kids a rabbit of our own. My brother's looked a lot like Peter Rabbit with his little green coat, and my older sister's was a smaller bunny that broke somewhere along the way. My younger sister and I had rabbits that looked alike except for the painting. Mine was gray and white and hers was black and white. 

This bunny has been pulled out every Easter for a lot of years now. It's sweet, and makes me think of my mama and Easter Sundays growing up. New dresses and spring coats, my family around the dining room table eating my moms delicious baked ham on the good china. 

I promise you behind that door there are four ceramic Easter bunnies sitting in a dining room ready for Sunday dinner after church. 

Where were we? Oh yeah, 2026. Lots of years and miles from that front door. 

We had a nice low key Easter weekend here. Friday night hubs and I watched the three local grands while their parents had a night out. It's all fun and games until you do an accidental awkward triple somersault while playing a harmless game of tag with the kids. Just ask hubs-ha! 

I brought them each a little bag with a sweet treat, a little toy, and pjs for the boys and a dress and shorts outfit for little miss. Not buying ALL the pretty clothes for my grandgirls is an act of will. 

Saturday morning I boiled eggs so I could make deviled eggs Sunday morning to take to my daughter's house for Easter dinner. Then, because it was a drizzly morning, hubs went with me to the store. He needed some sort of fussy battery and I needed last minute ingredients for my Sunday salad. 

We watched some of the British police series we've been enjoying (Death In Paradise) and I made an Easter chex mix (using pastel M & M's) and spent some time trying to get ahead with some of the letter posts coming up in the A-Z. I'd really love to be two ahead, but will settle for one. Or even just not scrambling on the day would be okay too. 

Saturday night I made chicken piccata (I love Ina's recipe) and we watched basketball. I got bored and ended up going to bed before the Michigan game ended. While I was all in on the brackets I don't have even the smallest connection to the two teams that made the finals. 

Sunday we had a wonderful church service with a hopeful message, beautiful music, and everyone in their Easter finery. You'll have to take my word for that last bit. Hubs and I didn't take a single picture of the two of us, and while I have cute pics of the kids I try not to share them here. The struggle is real though. 

After church we enjoyed a delicious lunch at daughter1's house with the grands, my daughter's in-laws, and her sister-in-law, brother-in-law and their super precious nine month old baby girl.  My baby girl made the most scrumptious lemon blueberry cake with a lemon buttercream and sugared blueberries on top, and I am already looking for a reason to make this recipe myself. 

Daughter2 and her hubs celebrated the day with their own church family in TN, but had a similar meal to ours because some traditions are worth keeping. 

We came home about five, the same time the sun decided to shine, and took a late Sunday nap which is also an Easter tradition. Or possibly an every Sunday tradition? We skipped dinner because we were both still full and watched a movie we somehow missed when it came out. 

It's called The Ark in some places and Noah's Ark in other places. We watched it on Prime and this one is the 2015 BBC television movie with David Threlfall and Joanne Whalley.  There have been a lot of film versions made of Noah's Ark and they don't get great reviews, mostly because the filmmakers change the story as it's told in the Bible. 

That's true in this case too, so you have to view it as a movie and not a documentary. They've taken a lot of liberties with the story, the timeline and who is actually on the Ark most of all, but as a movie it was engaging. If you've never read the first book of the Bible-Genesis,  check it out to hear the real deal. 

I've got my blood work this morning so no coffee which is not the way I like to begin the week, but I'll manage.

A is For Hodgepodge

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge and Day 1 in the April A-Z Blog Challenge. Some Wednesdays I'll probably use the random thought space here to post my A-Z, but not today. My letter A post started running a little long (shocking I know!) so I've decided to give it a place of it''s own. You'll find Letter A posted here. 

And if you're visiting from the A-Z welcome. The Hodgepodge happens here every Wednesday and you're invited to play along. Hodgepodge links only please on this post. 

And if you're here every week I'm glad you're back. Now here we go-

1. March is rolling on out of here. Sum up your March in ten words or less. 

March was a whirlwind of activities, events, and family fun. Whew! 

I know that's eleven words, but adding that Whew! at the end felt essential. 

2. Are you afraid of heights? When was the last time you found yourself dealing with a height, and did it make you nervous?

Heights don't bother me so much as what is often required to reach the height. I love a big, wide, expansive view from up above, but greatly dislike a sky tram, gondola, cars hanging from a string high above the earth, which is so often how you get from low to high. 

I've ridden many of these contraptions, and have to give myself a talking to the entire time we're moving. Or swaying! which is really not my favorite. 

Yes I rode a gondola above the clouds near Mt. Blanc. A crowded one too, where I wondered about the weight limit the entire ride up. It was a long, long, long way. 

I haven't dealt with any scary heights recently. I can handle tall buildings with the top floor reached by elevator. We spend a lot of time in the mountains and I love those sorts of heights/views. Driving high coastal cliff roads with no guard rail is unnerving, but also a little bit thrilling. 

Big Sur 

No post of mine regarding heights would be complete without another mention of the gondola that dangled by a thread I rode on to get up to the tea plantations in Taiwan. (I wrote a post about it here-Quake, Rattle, and Roll) The wind was whistling through the open windows and the car swayed in a way that was slightly terrifying. See those specks in the sky? 

That's me. The gondola made a stop halfway up and not gonna lie, the height and angle on these temple steps was a little nerve wracking too. 

3. What's a word you struggle to spell on a regular basis, and sometimes need to double check before writing it down? Use the word in a sentence that tells us something about your April calendar.

Rain will be necessary here this month, if we want to get out of the current drought conditions we're experiencing. 

4. Love 'em or hate 'em, with Easter comes the sweet treat known as Peeps. So... do you love 'em or hate 'em? Speaking of peeps, what's your favorite way to have chicken? 

I like Peeps okay, but wouldn't say I love them. They're a fun, festive treat this time of year, but I don't seek them out. I'm sure I put a package in my girl's baskets when they were young, because more than the taste I love the look of them.  

When my daughter2 was first married and living in Pennsylvania we went to a peep and wine pairing at one of their local vineyards and that was kind of fun. 

My favorite way to have chicken? As an ingredient in a Thai green curry.  I prefer chicken baked and with a lot of flavor added, teryiaki, BBQ sauce, that sort of thing. I don't eat a lot of fried food anymore. 

5. This week's Hodgepodge lands on the first day of April, which happens to be National Poetry Month. Do you like poetry?  Share a favorite line or two from one of your favorite poems. What makes this one a favorite? 

I started thinking about copyright infringement after posting this question and here's what I found on line-

'You can safely use short excerpts from poems published before 1925, as they are in the public domain. Generally, using 1-2 lines (especially if they are not the heart of the poem) is often considered fair use, though not guaranteed, while quoting 3+ lines or more of a recent work usually requires permission.'

I do like poetry, and I wish I'd memorized more when I was young and my brain wasn't as crowded as it is today. I have several favorites, but one I love is The Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe (c. 1849). The main reason I love this poem is because my dad knew it by heart and would randomly recite it from time to time. His grandgirls absolutely loved that, and this poem always makes me think of him. 

"It was many and many a year ago, 

In a kingdom by the sea, 

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought,

Monday March Madness

It's the end of March and I'm going on record to say the first quarter of this year has positively flown.  I feel like that's something old people say, except all the young people I know are saying it too. 

Is it because the world's in chaos? Is it because we're regularly checking the very full calendars we now hold in our hands, and as a result our lives are marked by 'what's next'? Is there some scientific explanation for it? Whatever the reason I want to remember each day is a gift and to keep a grateful heart. 

Let's chat about our weekends with Holly (Pink Lady Blog) and Sarah (Sunshine and Books) who host the Hello Monday hop.  

We were at home this weekend which was nice. I've either had a houseful or been in the car going hither and yon the last four weekends, and then I was at my daughter's all last week which also meant a road trip, so I'm glad to be livin' local for a few days. 

I drove home from Tennessee Friday morning, arriving back at the lake around 1. Hubs and I had a light lunch, I did three loads of laundry, caught up on some paperwork, then got ready for some Friday night fun. 

A really great night out with friends. Those aren't them -ha! We went to a local venue that's part farm-part Airbnb-part cooking class locale. 

We signed up with friends for this month's pizza class. There were twelve of us in total, and the set up is really nice. We started with a simple but super delicious appetizer-baked brie made in ramekins. We put cubed brie, raspberries, blackberries, chopped pistachios, a little bit of a spicy seasoning, and a drizzle of honey and balsamic glaze in ramekins, then baked. 

This picture is pre-bake, but once they came out of the oven the cheese had melted into the berries and the combination was so good! They were served with grilled crostini and I'll definitely be making this at home. I've done baked brie before but I liked the individual servings and the way the melted cheese was contained in a bowl, so more like a dip. 

I wore my pizza sauce colored shirt because I know myself, but they did provide aprons so all's good. The host had made the pizza dough ahead of time so it could proof, but she shared the recipe and the particular flour and yeast she likes to use. We worked the dough and added our toppings, and then they were baked in a pizza oven on the deck that overlooks the farm.

This isn't my pizza, but I forgot to take a picture of mine before we ate it. Everyone shared their pizzas so we got to taste a variety. We've done pizzas on the Green Egg at home, but we struggle with getting the cook just right. The class used two different ovens but she recommended the Solo brand and I currently have one sitting in my cart on Amazon. 

There was a super creamy homemade strawberry ice cream for dessert with a small chocolate brownie and I want to try the ice cream recipe at home too. Melt in your mouth good! 

It was a fun evening with a nice group of people, lots of chatting, eating, and learning a few helpful tips for our future pizza cooking too. Bonus we were home in time to watch our Vols beat Iowa State to move on to the Elite Eight playoffs in college basketball. 

Course the game started after 10 PM so I snoozed through it and hubs watched and told me they won. Worked for me as I was pooped. 

Saturday we had things to do in the morning. Hubs worked on finishing up some painting in the lower garage that he started while I was away. We have a wall of wooden storage drawers we got when we built the house, and we've wanted to paint them ever since. We didn't pick these out, but our builder knew of another home build where they were not going to use them after all, and asked if we wanted them. 

The drawers hold a lot and are really practical for the space, but while we do love our wood here we have never loved the tone of this particular piece. Plus we already had a gray-ish countertop to use and it clashed with the wood. It's a garage so not a huge deal, but we wanted to make the change. I didn't get a before pic, but you can see the color here- 

 

Hubs used chalk paint and he's meticulous when it comes to painting. He won't like me posting this 'not quite done' picture, but the paint looks great-

Yes those are cassette tapes on top of that counter. They're relegated to the garage though. 

The drawers are now black and look so much better.  They need a clear top coat which will happen this week, and the drawer pulls need to be reattached, but otherwise a project completed. 

While he was busy with that I ran to the library to return a book, the post office to mail a package, and the market to pick up a few things to get us through the weekend and the beginning of the new week. I came home and made an appetizer to take to a neighborhood party that evening. It was tricky and I forgot to snap a photo. 

Basically it was a Caprese tulip garden...here's a link to the picture I'd seen and was inspired by. You x the top of a cherry tomato then stuff the mozzarella pearl inside, pop it on a toothpick, add basil for the leaves and then stick the whole thing in a cucumber slice. It looks like a tulip and when you make thirty of them you have yourself an edible garden. I added a drizzle of olive oil to mine at the end. A couple of tulips tipped over in the transport, but they were all eaten so calling it a win. 

My daughter1 dropped by with her little ones before we left for the party, and we visited with them for a bit before heading up to our clubhouse. It was sunny and I snapped a picture of this 'flock' of turtles on our neigbhor's jet ski dock. This is the local turtle hangout-

Also, a grouping of turtles is called a bale. Who knew? 

Our neighborhood had a casino night in the clubhouse and everyone brought appetizers to share. It's not Vegas so no real gambling, just a fun night with friends. There was roulette, black jack, and bingo and they had the room decorated for the occasion too. 

Sunday morning we went to church and had plans to go to lunch afterwards with my daughter and her kiddos. Her hubs was on call this weekend so was busy doing surgery and didn't make it to church. Anyway, we got in our car after the service to drive to the restaurant and the tire light came on. Yes! Again! Ugh! And yes, it was just last Sunday we had a flat on the way to church. 

Thankfully this one wasn't flat, but it was low so we pulled in to a gas station and hubs discovered a nail in the tire. Not the new tire but still, super annoying. We decided we better go straight home just in case it deflates before we can get a plug put in it tomorrow, so that's what we did. 

We had lunch at home, and watched the Vols sadly get clobbered by Michigan. I worked on my blog a little, but probably not enough. The A-Z challenge starts this week and looks like it will be a blog as you go proposition. Time to sit and blog or just time to think about what to blog has been in short supply this month, so while I have a theme I haven't actually written any of the posts ahead of time. I think most people do, but sometimes I do better with a little pressure. 

That's what I'm telling myself anyway. 

Sunday evening our church had a special night of worship to begin this Holy Week and we were tired, but got ourselves together to go and were so glad we didn't miss this really wonderful service.

Spring Fever In The Hodgepodge

Welcome to a springtime edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

1. It's officially spring in the northern hemisphere. Does it feel like spring in your part of the world? If you're in the southern hemisphere it's officially autumn where you live. Does the weather say autumn? Which do you prefer-spring or autumn? Why? 

It definitely feels like spring where I live. I will do my best not to go on and on (and on and on) about the pollen but it's here and it's a sure sign of spring. Temps are in the 70's for the most part, some days we've been up in the 80's, and things are blooming. 

Autumn is my favorite season of the year, but I'm always happy to see spring springing too. 

2. What's your favorite thing about spring? 

Easter. 

 So much sweetness in a single photograph. 

3. Spring into action, spring in your step, spring to life, spring to one's feet...which spring idiom currently applies to your life in some way? Explain.  

All of the above. I'm hanging with these two little cuties this week and they definitely put a spring in my step. There's also a lot of springing into action and springing to your feet with the three and under set. They're quick! 

4. Which spring food from this list is your favorite? What's a dish you like that includes your favorite spring ingredient? 

asparagus, strawberries, salad greens like mesclun, artichokes, spinach, eggs, peas, spring onions

There isn't anything on this list I don't love so it's tough to pick a favorite. I'd probably say eggs because that's the one I'd miss the most if it were taken away. Deviled eggs are a favorite this time of year especially. 

5. What's one task on your spring cleaning list? Do you actually have a list? 

I don't have a written list, although I might make one just so I can have the satisfaction of crossing off completed chores. One task on the list? Baseboards, wipe down all the kitchen cabinets, and wash windows which we might farm out to a professional. 

6. Insert your own random thought here. 

Several people have asked me how we played the Bingo game on my mother-in-law's birthday. My sister-in-law did all the work, but it looked like this-

Every square had some saying, event, or phrase relating to my m-i-l. When the square was called you marked it off just like you do with a regular bingo board (We used dot markers). Then everyone told a story or shared a memory relating to whatever the square said. 

The cards were made using myfreebingocards.com. and my sister-in-law printed them out for us on paper.  Everyone's card was arranged differently but had some of the same topics, so there was a winner. We didn't have prizes, just lots of fun and laughs. 

Monthly mUsings

Onward in the A-Z Blog Challenge with today's letter. Today's post will also be linked with Holly and Patty's Monthly Musings party, and somehow I'm going to make it work. 

U is for Understanding

As in understanding and knowing your strengths, your limitations, your capabilities, 

and your healthy boundaries; self-awareness 

I know I should write something deep and introspective here, but instead I'm going to say I've nearly reached my limit in the A-Z Blog Challenge. And because I know myself I'm going to give myself some grace and participate in a fun monthly link up hosted by Holly and Patty (Monthly Musings) instead.

And that's okay. 

Blogging is fun for me, it serves as a stress-reliever, and a place to work things out on paper which often helps to bring clarity of mind. There's an awful lot going on here this week and because I know my limits and my capabilities,  I'm opting for something a little lighter today. 

Monthly Musings with Holly and Patty talking all things spring. Here we go...

  

1. Easter, Passover, or another holiday in the Spring? 

Easter. My favorite day of the year. We had a lovely one this year which I wrote about on Monday (The Weekend Replay).

2. Do you plant a garden? Any tips for those of us without a green thumb? 

Hubs has a green thumb, but we don't plant a garden. We have grown a few vegetables in pots, peppers mostly, but our property is wooded, pine straw-ed, and gently sloped to the lake. We don't have a nice sunny flat spot for planting a garden. 

Plus we're on the go a lot, and I feel like gardens require more daily attention in the summer months than we can give. Fortunately my daughter1's in-laws keep us supplied with fresh produce from their huge garden all summer long. 

3. How do you decorate for Spring? 

I wouldn't say I really decorate for Spring. I put out one or two things for Easter, add springtime hand towels to the bathrooms, and will usually have fresh flowers of some kind on my kitchen island. We haven't done any of our outdoor patio pots yet, but that will happen soon. Flowers on the porch say spring to me. 

We are all about the out of doors here and when you're inside your gaze naturally travels in that direction, so I'm careful not to compete. I don't add a lot of seasonal decor anytime other than Christmas. 

4. Desserts that just say spring to you? 

I think anything lemon makes a nice springtime dessert. 

I made mini carrot cakes for Easter and that felt appropriate for spring. 

A fruit tart or crumble of some kind is another favorite springtime dessert. 

5. Favorite spring flowers? 

Lilacs. But also tulips, pansies, and iris. 

6. Best tips for hosting spring events? 

I love a good theme so choosing to host around a springtime event like Easter, The Derby, Cinco de Mayo, or Mother's Day gives you a direction to run. 

I like outdoor gatherings whenever possible, but you need to plan for the weather and have both sun and shade options. And an indoor backup just in case. 

People want your company more than they want an exhausted distracted host, so let people bring something if they offer. Food doesn't have to be complicated. Light and fresh is the way to go in spring.

You can't go wrong with fresh flowers. 

7. Favorite beverage or cocktail that makes you think of Spring? 

I made my first pitcher of the sweet tea season on Easter Sunday. I live in the south and sweet tea is available everywhere here year round, but I typically don't make it at home until Easter. I'll keep a pitcher in the frig from now until probably Thanksgiving. 

Besides iced tea a glass of Rosé or Prosecco sipped on a sunny patio would be another springtime favorite. 

8. Vegetable garden, flower garden, both or neither? 

As in my own, or what do I enjoy? I love beautiful gardens and a day trip to a garden in bloom is one of my favorite kind of outings. I love to visit gardens when we travel somewhere new. I saw more than a few gardens when we lived in the UK, but there are many beautiful blooms here in the US too-

9. Favorite Easter candy? 

Finally an easy one...jellybeans of course. They're my kryptonite. Been working my way through this jar for the past month. 

I won't say how many times I've topped it up. 

10. Marshmallow peeps? Gross or yes please? 

I'm somewhere in the middle on these. I like the way they look better than the way they taste, but I wouldn't say they're gross. 

I love the colors of spring, along with the flavors and scents of spring, but the pollen not so much. It makes me love spring just a little bit less than I would if we didn't have to deal with all that yellow dust. Thankfully the pollen season is nearing an end, and it's pouring rain as I type this which will help a lot.

The Weekend Replay

Good Monday morning friends. I'm still A-Z-ing, so using today's letter as part of my weekend recap, which I'll link with Holly and Sarah. 

R is for Resurrection

'because that's the reason for the season'

We had a nice weekend centered around Easter, which is my favorite day of the year. The meaning behind this day is what gives me hope for the future and strength for the day. In church this morning the first song sung was Because He Lives...

'because He lives, I can face tomorrow, because He Lives, all fear is gone, because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.'

I pray everyone reading today knows the truth contained in these lyrics. 

On Friday we made Resurrection rolls with the grands. I'd never made them before, but have seen them all over the Internet for years, and my daughter had done them in Easters prior. Super simple, but a really powerful visual for little ones to go along with the story of Easter. 

You roll a large marshmallow in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, then wrap a crescent roll around the marshmallow. You can talk about Jesus body being prepared for burial to go along with this. The rolls go into the oven and you wait for them to cook, which allows you to talk about Jesus being dead for three days. 

When you take the rolls out of the oven and cut into one, the marshmallow has melted which makes the roll look empty, just like the tomb. The kids seem to make the connections too which is fun to see. 

After the roll baking was finished I ran some errands including last minute grocery items, the dry cleaning, and paper goods from Hobby Lobby. It's hard not to wander the entire store when I'm in Hobby Lobby but I stayed focused. We had dinner at home Friday night, and I'm guessing we went to bed early, although I can't say for sure. It's a safe guess though -ha! 

Saturday morning we dyed eggs. In my dining room, because  we like to live dangerously here. 

All went well and it was a fun morning for everyone. Hubs carried on his tradition of dyeing one 'ugly egg' and the kids get a kick out of that. 

After we got that cleaned up I did some prep work for the next day's dinner, along with making a dessert to take to a neighbor's house that evening. I've been trying to bake each of the Southern Living Cake of the Month cakes this year and I made the April recipe on Saturday. A definite win and I'll make again. 

April's recipe is mini carrot cakes. So cute! I love the presentation. You bake the carrot cake recipe in sheet cake format, then use a small biscuit cutter to cut circles. It makes 12 cakes, so you cut 24 circles, then pipe icing on one, stack another on top, then pipe some more. 

The icing is a coconut butter cream, and both the cake and the icing were super delish. My daughter did the piping so it was a team effort. 

I also went ahead and made my pineapple stuffing for Sunday's dinner because it does well sitting in the frig overnight. I love to do whatever I can ahead of time. If you don't know what pineapple stuffing is I use this recipe. It's the texture of stuffing, but sweet. 

We had plans to go to the neighbors for dinner and cards Saturday night and I was bringing dessert. I made Ina Garten's triple berry crumble and it's scrumptious. The berries are really sweet right now so I cut the sugar by quite a bit, but it wasn't noticeable. I thought I took a picture, but can't find it so maybe not. All that baking and I am kinda wishing I'd taken a picture of my kitchen after, but I didn't think of it. 

Sunday morning the kids woke up to their Easter baskets followed by cinnamon rolls for breakfast. What's one more sweet thing today, right?  My son-in-law was on call this weekend and suffice it to say if you're a surgeon on call on a holiday weekend you'll be working. He was able to see the kids dressed and get in a quick family photo, but then we didn't see him again until we were wiping down counters and getting ready for bed. 

Hubs and I went to church with our daughter and her littles and the music was wonderful and the message  so good. We got home and changed into comfy clothes then got busy putting together our lunch/dinner.  Her in-laws, both the mom and dad and the sister-in-law and her hubs,  arrived around 1 and the kids did their egg hunt. Then we all chatted, the kids played, hubs manned the grill with our ham upon it, and I finished up the rest of the sides. 

I normally love to break out my china on Easter Sunday, but this year we decided to dine al fresco in the new space so I went with paper plates and have zero regrets. 

Daughter1's mother-in-law brought her famous banana pudding and her sister-in-law brought homemade mac and cheese which were both so good. 

We had a fun little Easter Bunny charcuterie while we were waiting on dinner. Besides the ham we also had roasted honey-balsamic green beans and carrots, the pineapple stuffing, deviled eggs, and I also made Nigella Lawson's pea-mint-avocado salad which was really good. 

I used just butter lettuce instead of adding chicory, and I go easy on the mint. I also throw a handful of parmesan on top before tossing because it seems like it needs a little salty something. We all loved it. So fresh!  

The in-laws headed home and we finished the clean up, the putting away of the leftovers, and then I crawled into bed to finish this post. It was a beautiful day filled with family, good food, and many reminders of our faithful loving God. We missed our Tennessee littles and their parents, but will see them soon.
