Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 620

Here are the questions to this week's Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog then hop back here on Wednesday (9/17) to add your link to the party. See you there!

1.  Are you more life of the party or more party pooper? If your answer is somewhere in the middle which side of the middle do you lean towards more?

Birthday party, beach party, cocktail party, dinner party, charity fundraiser, surprise party, costume party, garden party, Christmas party, reunion...what's your favorite kind of party?

2. Cheese, wine, and balsamic vinegar all improve with age. What would you personally add to the list?

3. How do you feel about your birthday? How do you want to be celebrated? Or don't you?

4. What remarkable feat, interesting piece of trivia, or historical event occurred on your birth day and month? Not necessarily your same birth year, just the same date/month.

5. Share two good things about your life right now.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

The Carousel of Time

It's a birthday palooza round here in September, and tomorrow is my Daughter2's special day. Years ago she told me reading my blog on her birthday was one of her favorite parts of the day, so I keep on keeping on.

Because I host the Hodgepodge on Wednesdays I'm posting a day early this year.  I feel all the feels this whole week anyway, so the day before is definitely allowed.

Sixteen years of blogging for her birthday means one has to get a little bit creative, so here we go.

Hey moms still in the trenches...

I want you to know that one of the quiet joys of later life is discovering the unexpected gifts grown daughters bring. These once-tiny beauties who held my hand have become women of real wisdom.

Like so much in parenting, the shift happens gradually—so naturally you don’t notice it, until one day you do. The ones you once nurtured, taught and guided begin offering guidance in return. They grow into thoughtful companions, and surprise you with insights that catch you off guard. Suddenly, you're seeking their opinion.

They see the world through a different lens—not just because they're of another generation, but also because they've built a perspective in life that's all their own. It's remarkable how much of yourself you recognize in them still… and even more remarkable how far beyond you they've grown. Still their mother’s daughter, yet wholly their own.

There's a quote I read (author unknown) that says this-

'Raising them was the work of my heart...knowing them now is the reward.'

Happy birthday Daughter2! One day I hope you read these words as you write your own birthday message to your now tiny beauty who will have grown into a woman you adore and learn from too.

I love my front row seat to the extraordinary woman you've become, and pray you're blessed beyond measure in the year ahead, and all the ones after too.

xoxo Momma

For The Man Of The Hour

It's Monday. It's Labor Day here in the US of A. And most importantly it's my hubs birthday. Whoohoo! Let's discuss. I mean let's discuss more than I have already discussed him on the blog over the past sixteen years.

Have I been blogging for sixteen years? It seems so.

Anywho let's celebrate the hubs with a list of my top ten favorite things about him.  Coming up with list of things I love about him sounded familiar so I looked back at my trusty blog and yup. I found a list from 2011 which is like a hundred years ago, so time for an update. There's some overlap but he's still that guy and I love what I love, which I think is a good thing.

1. He's funny. Always quick with a comeback, comment, humorous observation. Makes me laugh when I want to cry. Makes me laugh when I'm mad which, let's be honest, can sometimes make me madder except it's hard to be mad when you're trying not to laugh.

2. He's neat as a pin. If you know him you're laughing, especially my girls. I'm not sloppy, but he is something much more than just not sloppy. He vacuums, cleans the showers, washes windows when the dog's nose prints become too much, and picks up pinecones in the yard when he's got nothing better to do. He's also in charge of the floors, the granite, and cleaning the stovetop, so what's left for me? Still plenty, but it's nice to know he will happily do his tasks and anything extra that needs doing and they will be done perfectly.

3. He's a wonderful grandfather. I always knew he would be. He's so crazy about our crew and he shows it, lives it, loves them with words and actions and humor. They all know he's funny too.

4. He's reading through the Bible with me this year. I've done this many times, but he's never read it cover to cover, and y'all it's September and we're still in the Old Testament. It can be a bit of a challenge to stick with it, but he's stuck with it and I appreciate the commitment. He keeps his word.

5. He makes the icky phone calls and deals with repairs I'd prefer to handle by pretending if I can't see it then there's nothing that needs repairing. Who's with me? He's always one step ahead of whatever needs doing around here and I know he'll find the right person to do the job and will call said person at least three times to make sure they didn't forget, they're really coming, and also they definitely have us on their calendar for Tuesday at ten, yes just checking. He is the squeaky wheel and nothing is left undone, half done, or badly done.

6. He's the mayor. Not the actual mayor, but he never met a stranger and makes everyone feel welcome wherever he goes. He draws people out and helps people who aren't comfortable in a group feel comfortable in a group. If there's a microphone he's happily behind it.

7. He's an excellent dancer. Seriously. This made my first list too but it's still worth mentioning.

8. He watches out for me. Thinks of me. Cares for me. Opens doors, tells me to watch my step (more so in recent years because let's be honest here, I've missed a couple), walks on the traffic side of the sidewalk, drops me off when the weather is yucky, brings me coffee, knows when I've had too much motion and not enough Dramamine, gives me his jacket when I'm cold, says let's eat out when I've had a full day, understands my need for space and words and books and a long hot bath.

There's more. Lots more. A thousand little things that are meaningful and thoughtful and that fill up the well I'm always talking about in marriage.

9. He encourages me to write more, to try something I think I won't like before I've ever tried it but he knows I will, to step out of my comfort zone, to give myself credit when credit is due, to let go of hurts I tend to hold on to, to not dwell, not panic, not overthink.

10. He thinks he's the lucky one.

Happy birthday hubs...you're still a cutie xoxo

Hello Monday, So Long July

Hello friends. August is just around the bend and here we have a full and mostly fun calendar of things coming our way.

I know many people feel like July flew right on by, but I enjoyed the pace. Ours was not too fast, not too slow, or as Goldilocks would say 'it was just right'.  We had very few big events on the calendar, and spent a lot of time at home, enjoying the lake, grilling out, and resting my foot.

Maybe that's the upside to a stress fracture mid-summer. It forces you to consider what you'll say yes to a little more carefully than you normally would. We had company over the 4th, but other than that the house was all ours. While we're never people with nothing to do, we had lots of down time which was nice.

So how did you spend this last weekend in July? Here's how ours looked...

Friday I was supposed to have a mani/pedi. It was going to be a bit wonky with the boot and all, but I was okay with one foot having a full pedi and the other just a polish. Hubs was golfing and I was going to drive myself for the very first time since I started in the boot. The Dr. said I could drive if needed, and I considered this a need.

I left the house and got about a mile down the road when I was forced to turn around due to a very serious accident ahead. Turning around meant I would have had to go around the lake in the opposite direction of my appointment so I gave up, called the salon, and went back home. I wasn't meant to drive I guess. Or get my nails done. Bother.

Friday night hubs and I went to a nearby spot we love for a glass of wine and a charcuterie board dinner. It was nice. We got home a little before eight and my son-in-law dropped our two oldest grandsons off at our house to spend the night. Saturday was the mancub's birthday and they wanted the boys out of the house while they got things set up.

Everyone put on pjs and piled in our bed to watch Honey I Shrunk The Kids. I hadn't seen it in many many years, and I often think I remember a movie as being fine for certain ages only to watch and discover I remembered wrong. That was not the case here and they enjoyed it.

The boys are not normally early risers, but were up early on Saturday. I think the birthday party adrenaline was amping up and when I said the party wasn't for nine more hours they sighed a little. We had a lot of time to fill in between, so they worked on a lego creation I had here, and then hubs made blueberry pancakes on the griddle.

We went for a lake swim, came back inside for lunch, and then my son-in-law arrived to take them home. We followed soon after to help with some of the pre-party tasks.

Planning and hosting birthday parties for my girls was one of my favorite things to do when they were small, and my girls love it too. Daughter1 has an art background and this is a fun way to be creative. The theme was Star Wars and she made a Death Star pinata out of paper mache which was awesome.

Also I hated pinatas as a kid. All that chaos and the anxiety of chasing down the candy. Whew. These boys were all in though and they loved it.

Her goody bags which she made herself were also super cute. There was a ginormous inflatable water slide for entertainment and it was a good thing because it was hot with a capital H. If my foot wasn't in a boot I'd have tried it myself.

These pictures make it look like no one was there, but kids were there lol. Parents too. We stayed until the very end so we could help with some of the clean up and when we came home we flopped on the couch and agreed birthday parties are the best kind of exhausting fun.

I always write my grandchildren letters on their birthdays...you can read the birthday boy's new letter here (2922 Days).

Sunday we went to church. The 'kids' had a meeting after so hubs and I went to our usual breakfast spot for lunch, then came home, changed, and took the boat out to meet friends.

Someone is always organizing impromptu float parties and they'll text a map with a pin telling us which cove they're in, and we tie the boats up together...

... and then we float.

We got home late afternoon and I called my sister to catch up, then hubs grilled salmon for dinner. I made a spinach salad to go with and we watched a couple more episodes of The Lioness. Have you seen it?  I'm not really invested, yet it's somehow still managing to make me tense. We're about eight episodes in so I guess we'll finish the season.

2,922 Days

I like to write letters to my grandchildren on their birthdays and today is one of those days. No they don't read my blog, but I keep these letters for them to have when they're older and need reminding of how very much they are loved.

Dear Mancub,

2,922 Days. That's how long I've known you. And while that sounds like a long time it feels like just  yesterday I walked into your home on the other side of the country and met you face to face.

You had a full head of very dark hair, the most perfect little face, and a sweetness about you that remains there still today.

And now you're eight.

You're kind and tender hearted, and you're funny too. You're such a good big brother to your baby sister, and also to your little brother who loves and admires you whole heartedly. Like your momma, you are so very intuitive about people and their feelings, a truly wonderful quality to possess.

The change from little boy to 'just a boy' happens seemingly overnight, but you're there now. No longer little, but also not too big to hug your Nana.

fyi-you are never too big to hug your Nana.

You love the great outdoors and since moving to our neck of the woods have spent a lot of time literally in the woods. You love climbing trees and wading in creeks and fishing with Daddy and brother, and hikes to the many nearby waterfalls. Exploring the woods and wide open spaces the way all boys should.

You're a lego wizard and still love building all sorts of things. Currently you're a big fan of Star Wars and are busy collecting the lego sets that go along with that. You are rarely without a book in your hand and love to talk about what you're reading too.

You loved playing baseball this year and grew so much in terms of skill and grit. You had a lot of fun cheering on the local college team too.

You still eat and sleep like a teenager and the water is where you want to be.

After five moves in seven years you're happy to say this is where I live. Happy for friends you won't have to move away from in a year's time. Happy to let your roots sink down deep into the red clay soil of South Carolina.

We're happy too.

Happy to be near enough to say come swim. To sit beside you in church on Sunday mornings. To watch you play baseball, rock the paddle board, and celebrate birthdays and the ordinary days in between without a plane ride, a passport, or a Facetime screen.

Happy birthday to the one who gave me my favorite name. I'm grateful to have a front row seat to watch all the ways God is working out His perfect and unique plan for your life. I pray your love for Him grows more with every candle added to the cake, and that you seek Him daily in all things.

Know for always your Nana loves you deep and wide xo

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths."  Proverbs 3:5-6

Recapping The Weekend Trifecta

And happy anniversary to us! Hubs is in one state and I'm in another, but we'll still mark 41 years of married life today.

This particular weekend in June is what I call the trifecta here. Not only is it our anniversary, it's also Grandson #3's birthday and Father's Day too. Whew! Lots to celebrate.

Let's back up and take it one occasion at a time, k?

We had plans to travel to Daughter2's house in Tennessee for the big birthday bash happening there on Saturday afternoon. Hubs and I were going to head that direction Friday afternoon and then Daughter1 and her kiddos would join us there Saturday morning.

Before leaving town we had a small birthday brunch here for a friend celebrating a milestone year. I mean why not? We had three couples in addition to the two of us. We intended to make bacon and eggs on the griddle, but the weather didn't cooperate for outdoor cooking. We still were able to dine outside, but hubs made the bacon and eggs on the stove. I made my overnight French toast, one friend brought a delicious hash brown casserole, and another friend brought a beautiful fruit tray.

I think birthdays should be celebrated and this was a fun gathering.

Once everyone left to get on with their weekend we finished cleaning up and hit the road to hub's brother and sister-in-law's house. My mother-in-law lives nearby and we were going to spend the night at my brother-in-law's then collect hubs mom Saturday morning to go the additional hour and a half to the party.

This was our first trip to the Knoxville area driving our pre-Helene route. The highway between Asheville and Knoxville has been mostly closed or single lane since the hurricane hit and it's still a huge mess. You can at least get through now, and the traffic wasn't too terrible. I know most of the country has moved on from the disaster of Helene to any number of other crises our country has experienced since, but it's really hard to see and think about all that's been lost or rearranged in the western Carolinas and East Tennessee.

We arrived at my brother-in-law's home in time for dinner. They grilled delicious filets and it's always great to see them and catch up in person. They were also keeping the little brown dog for us overnight so we didn't have to bring him to the party and he loves that.

Saturday morning we picked up hub's mama and headed to Daughter2's. Her sister arrived with her crew and the world's biggest dinosaur balloon shortly after and we all had lunch.

The party wasn't starting until 3:30 and the weather was questionable. They have a bounce house and we got that set up (by 'we' I mean my son-in-law of course) and then about an hour before the party the skies opened up, it rained buckets, then blew on out and the sun shone once more.

Guests began arriving and the kids had a ball. My daughter and son-in-law have the nicest friends and they all have kids of a similar age which is fun. My daughter's in-laws were also there and we always enjoy time spent with them.

The party had a dinosaur theme and everything was super cute. There was pizza and ice cream cake with a side of cupcakes too.

The bounce house got a workout so a win for kids and parents alike.

One of my favorite things about the day-

Since Daughter2 had a full house with the in-laws in town plus her sister with her three children, hubs and I booked hotel rooms for us and for his mom for the night. The in-laws are staying over for several days and it didn't make sense for them to go to a hotel.

Sunday morning we went back to the house for breakfast with the whole gang. I'd made two trays of french toast for the Friday brunch and brought one with me for the weekend which worked out well. My son-in-law made bacon and eggs on his Blackstone so everyone ate well.

Oh, and happy Father's Day! I brought chocolates for all the dads and they had plans to go skeet shooting or clays or something similar that afternoon which they love. I rode back to the lake with my daughter1 and her kids as I had some things to take care of today, Monday. Hubs drove his mom back to her home Sunday afternoon, then spent the night at his brother's house. He had plans to meet a long time friend for lunch and will be home later today.

Forty one years ago today we said I Do. We'll make plans for a celebratory dinner in the next couple of weeks, because while we're always living life all in, I still think it's important to set aside time to mark the year. To see where we are and where we've been and to say we're still here.

I always write a birthday letter to my grands on their special day, and if you'd like to read today's birthday letter, you'll find it linked here-Dino-mighty

DINO-mighty

I always write letters here to my grands on their birthdays and today is one of those days...

Dear Sweet Baby J-

Today you are three.

We had such a fun day celebrating you on Saturday, with a dinosaur themed backyard party filled with lots of friends and family. Your cousins finally live close enough to attend and you were so excited to see them walk through the door. You refer to the oldest two as 'my boys' which is too precious for words. You cry in the driveway when they pull away and I love the way you're growing up together.

The little girls are right in there with you boys, and that's fun for everyone to see too.

When someone asks me what you're like I often say 'he's extra'. I don't know how else to say it. You're extra sweet, extra loving, extra joyful. Extra in all the very best ways.

Some of my favorite things about you are the way you talk, the way you run, and the way you do a little happy dance when you're excited. You are precise in the way you put things together, and want to help Daddy in the garden, the garage, and with any wood working project he undertakes.

You share well (most of the time) with sissy and love to bake with momma. Actually you love anything with momma because she's your girl. You also love swimming, swinging, all things that go, puzzles, and books. You love your people hard, and want them close by all the time. You have a sweet tender heart and move everyone at the table with your earnest prayers at mealtimes.

Hey, guess what? Not only is today your birthday, it's also the day some forty one years ago that your Nana and Pawpaw got married. You were born on our anniversary, which only makes it all the more special.

I believe these two milestones landing on the same day is no coincidence. Instead I see it as a gentle reminder love never stops growing. That day marked the beginning of a love story that would expand beyond just the two of us in ways we could not envision or be more grateful for.

You little man, are living proof love multiplies, and every year as we celebrate our marriage we get to celebrate you too. You're a joy, a treasure, and a gracious reminder of God's love and faithfulness in our lives. Always know your Nana loves you deep and wide xo

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;
do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

A Hodgepodge By Any Other Name...

Welcome to June and this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for your neighbor there. Here we go...

From this Side of the Pond

1. What do birthdays look like in your house? How are they celebrated? Any special traditions? What about birthdays growing up?

If you've followed me for any length of time then you know I love celebrating birthdays, especially my own. True story.

I also like to make the day special for my girls, my grands, and my hubs when their birthdays roll around. There will definitely be cake (or sometimes pie for the hubs) and I'm a fan of balloons to make things festive so there will always be balloons.

And definitely a birthday card because I still love to write wishes inside a card. I also like to make a favorite or special meal if I'm celebrating with family in person.

I love a theme and hosted many a themed birthday party for my girls when they were growing up. We enjoyed coming up with the theme and then adding lots of detail to make it happen.

Oh and my favorite birthday parties are home parties with a made from scratch cake. A venue now and then is okay, but I love the coziness of a home party.
The big thing for me and birthdays, my own or someone else's, is I want the celebrant to feel like they were thought about ahead of their special day.

As far as tradition goes, hubs always gets me a chocolate cake with raspberry filling and a chocolate ganache on top.

Growing up I had birthday parties some years and others it was just family. My mom always made me a German Chocolate cake which is still a favorite. I remember feeling loved and special on my birthday which is how I want everyone to feel on their birthday.

2. Someone is sending you a dozen roses...what color are you hoping for? Are you someone who gets accused of seeing the world through rose colored glasses? Is your accuser correct? Elaborate.

If hubs is sending me roses they're most likely yellow as those have always been one of my favorites. I also really love the roses that are a little bit pink and a little bit peach. I think they're called Tiffany.

I've often been told I wear rose colored glasses to see the world, but I'm okay with that. I'm a total optimist and I own that. Do I know the world isn't always rosy? Absolutely. But I'm always going to be the person looking for the silver lining, the bright spot, the rose amidst the thorns.

3. June 4th is National Cheese Day...will you celebrate? What's something (besides a burger) you make in the summer months that calls for cheese?

Since cheese is a favorite here I have it in some form most days. In the summer months my favorite is probably a Caprese salad with vine ripened tomatoes, basil from my garden, and sliced mozzarella with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic glaze.

4. 'tis the season...any weddings on your June calendar? What's the first word that comes to mind when I say marriage?

We have just one wedding on the summer calendar and it happens to be in June. I love weddings and look forward to celebrating newly marrieds.

The first word that comes to mind when I hear the word marriage? Trust.

5. What are you most looking forward to this June?

We have a lot on the June calendar to look forward to including the above mentioned wedding, catching up with friends we haven't seen in several years en route to said wedding, my daughter's birthday, a grandson's third birthday, our anniversary, Father's Day and celebrating all the wonderful dads in our family, and of course lake time.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Have you watched the short documentary film on Netflix called The Quilters? If not I recommend. It's the story of prisoners who learn to quilt and then go on to make quilts for children in foster care, autistic children, and others. It's only about thirty minutes long, too short actually because you want to know more...definitely worth viewing.

Hola Monday

Hello friends and hello June. We're halfway through the year which seems crazy because I feel like Christmas was yesterday, but here we are. Question-is it a sign of aging when you constantly talk about how fast time is moving? Possibly.

We had a nice weekend and here's how that looked-

The sun shone and that seems worth mentioning. Not every minute, but there were some really pretty moments.

Friday morning I made a trip to the grocery for a few things then spent the afternoon in the kitchen. I did not take many pictures because when I bake I get caught up in whatever I'm doing and forget. True story. I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies (using m & m's) to give away, and also a blueberry pie to take to dinner at the neighbors. My neighbor asked me to bring dessert and the blueberries are really good right now.

I make my mom's recipe which instructs you to mash one pint and leave one pint whole. I think this makes the pie so good, because you get some actual berries mixed with the fruit filling and the texture is delightful. This recipe also calls for a whipped cream topping as opposed to a double crust and I definitely prefer the whip.

Do I have a picture? Sort of. Here's proof I use my pie weights-

My neighbors had a childhood friend and her husband in town and invited us to join them for dinner. The weather was nice and we ate on their porch, then played our favorite card game inside.

And ate blueberry pie of course, of which there is no picture. Carry on.

Saturday morning hubs and I went to a funeral, a lovely service for a truly lovely woman. We got home and hubs left pretty much right away to go to a real estate open house. I read some, then did more cooking for a dinner I was dropping off later that evening.

My son-in-law and the boys were at the house when we got home from the service which is always a sweet surprise. They were paddle boarding, then my daughter dropped by a while later with Little Miss and we sat on the porch chatting for a bit. Such a treat to have a daughter close enough to drop in.

Sunday was a sweet sweet day. We went to church, then right after Daughter1 and I left in my car to go into the nearby city to celebrate her birthday. I truly cannot remember the last time I got to celebrate a birthday with her in person, and we made the most of it. Her birthday isn't until next week, but her hubs made plans for them on her actual birthday, which is also nice.

Almost as nice as an afternoon out with your momma.

This girl has always been a gentle graceful woman child who loved ballet. She's the one in front, so serious about her dance. She started ballet as a tiny tot and kept at it until she graduated from high school. Other forms of dance too, but the last few years focused solely on ballet.  I always loved watching her dance.

For her birthday this year we had a girls day. We started with brunch in the nearby city, or jazz and Jesus as my daughter called it. There was a jazz trio playing and singing in the lobby of the restaurant and their playlist featured jazzy versions of some very well known hymns. I've never heard a jazz version of Blessed Assurance before, but we did on Sunday and it was good!

We toasted to another year with this venue's version of a Bellini. Not quite as good as Harry's in Venice but still delicious. We couldn't make up our minds about what to order and decided to split two of their entrees. Both were wonderful.

I ordered the crab cake Eggs Benedict with pepper jack grits (yum!) and my daughter ordered the lavender scented brioche style french toast with an espresso mascarpone cream, maple syrup and bacon. We both love french toast but knew we'd want something savory to cut the sweet and the eggs were perfect. I will definitely be trying to recreate that espresso cream at home.

The french toast was a lot and even splitting the order we only ate half. After brunch we walked a little, browsed the downtown bookstore for a bit, then walked over to the nearby venue to see the International Ballet's performance of Don Quixote.

The music was wonderful and the costumes were colorful and so so lovely. And the dance was just amazing. They make it look so easy and we know it's not easy.

It's been too long since either of us have spent an afternoon getting lost in a ballet, too long since we had a mother-daughter day date. We loved every minute. I know we were celebrating her birthday, but it felt a little bit like a gift to me too.

Linking today with Holly and Sarah for their regular Monday morning weekend recap party. So what were you up to this weekend?
