Tap Tap...Is This Thing On?
I was looking back at my recent posts and they're pretty much all Hodgepodge all the time, and I guess that's because life here lately has felt a bit 'hodgepodge'. Here's some of what we've been up to in February.
Well there's been no down time lol.
We pretty much just drop where we are these days. The 'kid's are still here with us, and while I'm not in charge of the littles there is still so much that needs doing on a daily basis. I know my daughter manages all the everyday type of household and childcare chores on her own on the regular, but we're all here together so we're trying to help where we can help.
They're somewhat unpacked here, but they also have bags in the garage and some stashed in the storage room, and things in the attic all of which hey've needed to access since the weather has warmed up. Everything else they own is still in storage and I know they are just so ready to be settled into a home of their own.
In other news...I'm buying a lot of groceries. A lot. The first couple of weeks the total was shocking, but now I'm just like whatever. We're not eating out much so I'm sure it all balances out in the end. My daughter and I have been going to the store together and sharing the cost and when we finish paying and combine our two receipts we both kind of gasp.
Besides all the meal planning and meal making and meal clean up there's laundry and our usual weekly commitments with volunteering, real estate-ing, dinners with friends now and then, and grandchildren wanting our attention. It's nice that we can fill in whatever gaps need filling. We can keep an eye on the 2-year old while momma showers, make breakfast for the whole big hungry crew, I can be available to stay with the kids while the parents run with hubs to look at a house or two, that sort of thing. My son-in-law has a birthday this week and we told them to go out to dinner one night. Alone. Happy birthday!
Speaking of real estate...there's not a lot on the market here currently. They found a house they wanted (mostly). It wasn't perfect, but we've all let go of perfect, and the house was warm and lovely and only 2 miles from us. It was overpriced and the seller wouldn't come down enough to make it make sense so it wasn't meant to be.
Hubs and I have bought and sold a lot of houses over the course of our married life, and whenever we house hunt I tell myself if it doesn't work out for whatever reason then it's not our house. It can still be disappointing though, as you really need to imagine yourself living in a place before you make the offer, and once you do that you can't help but get excited thinking a place might be yours.
Typically this is the time of year where the market picks up and we're hoping that's the case this year too. I've enjoyed seeing some of the homes they've considered and we've taken the kids to a couple too. As my daughter says, 'it's good to know the kids can be happy in any house' ha! While mom and dad don't mind a few projects some of these homes are in need of far too much reno. One was also in desperate need of a thorough scrubbing (shudder!), but the kids look around and claim bedrooms and check out the outdoor space and declare it all GREAT!
Besides all the busy-ness with extra peeps in the house, hubs and I have been working to wrap up our tax organizer, secure a beach house for a summer holiday, track down the covers we need for our outdoor furniture before the pollen really falls, finalize plans for a wine dinner for 20 we're hosting with another couple, manage a huge tree removal from the backyard (these tree guys are amazing)...
...and honestly about a hundred other 'things' both large and small.
We've also had some friends dealing with a really hard thing that's left both hubs and I feeling a little bit down. And then there's America, mad all the time and filled with so much bickering and whining my brain hurts from trying to understand how we've gotten to the place we're in and can we even find our way out? Is this the new normal???
Daffodils are blooming.
It needs to be said. Spring is a reminder of so much goodness...hope, beauty, warmth, light, forgiveness, new growth, fresh starts...
Last week some friends invited us to join them for a couple of days in North Georgia at an Air B & B they'd rented in a pretty little vineyard (Buckley for anyone local reading this).
What a fabulous get away and a beautiful venue! The cabin was so well appointed and the view could not have been nicer. There's a screened porch that overlooks the river and you can make the short walk over to the tasting room if you feel like it.
We drove down on Tuesday and once we'd dropped our bags we headed in to Ellijay for lunch.
We sat outside and had a fun waiter who loved to talk. Hubs and I split a salmon BLT and an order of Brussel sprouts and the summer-like day called for a glass of Rosé.
We came back to 'our' winery after lunch and enjoyed a tasting there in the sunny sunshine of the vineyard.
We had dinner 'at home' both nights we were there, courtesy of our friends as she had done most of the prep work at home. Easy peasy, for us anyway. Tuesday night we played cards after dinner and talked and it was just so nice to be with friends we've known since college. We've lived a lot of life with these two and they are definitely our people.
Wednesday we drove into the nearby town of Blue Ridge and meandered through some of the stores we enjoy. I bought these imported Italian chocolates with balsamic which might not sound good but trust me, they are super delicious!
The center is soft and nougat-like and the balsamic isn't overpowering but it's definitely there. The taste is somewhat similar to a chocolate covered cherry, not as sweet and minus the liquid you get with those.
We grabbed lunch on yet another patio, sharing a charcuterie board and a small flatbread pizza. The weather was absolute perfection both days.
After lunch we made our way to a hillside winery called Roo Mountain Vineyard.Their tasting room is beautiful (no kids allowed here) and their outdoor space has an absolutely gorgeous view.
It was hard to peel ourselves away, but we eventually managed that and spent the pre-dinner hour sitting beside the fire pit behind our sweet little cabin.
There were more cards after dinner and we crashed pretty early. Everyone was up and on the road to head home after breakfast on Thursday.
It was a perfect little break.
When the noise in your head grows a bit too loud tell it to hush and get yourself outside...
With friends you've known forever.
I highly recommend.
This post is linked with the Hello Monday party hosted by Holly and Sarah. Hop over there to read more or add your own weekend recap to the blog list. Also, because I haven't spent much time online this past week my reading list is long. I likely won't get back to read the posts I've missed so if you wrote something recently that was great, newsworthy, funny, or even only slightly interesting let me know and I'll hunt it down. Enjoy your day!

Patiently Answering The Hodgepodge
Welcome to this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-
1. Do you complete your own tax returns or hire out? Something you've found taxing lately?2. It's spring (in the northern hemisphere anyway)...would you rather spend the day hiking in the great outdoors or planting a garden? Do you/will you have a garden this year?
Hiking.
I could definitely enjoy planting a garden if I had the right spot for one here. And if we were home for more than three days in a row to manage it. I like to hike and there are lots of nice trails nearby that we still need to explore so I'm going with hiking.
3. Do you consider yourself a patient person? In what sort of situation is patience not desirable? Are you happy with the degree of patience you have in your daily life? If not, what can you do to cultivate more of this quality in your life?
I would say I'm a very patient person, although sadly not as patient as I was when I was younger. I asked hubs if he thinks I'm patient and he said "definitely". Impatience rarely makes a situation better and in general winds everyone up in an unhelpful way.
When is impatience a good thing? Well, the opposite of what I said a minute ago could also be true. Impatience can sometimes motivate me to get things done that need doing.
Mostly though, in my mind, patience is a positive trait, and impatience negative.
4. Do you like the flavor cinnamon? If so what's your favorite something made with cinnamon?
I love cinnamon, probably one of my favorite flavors. I make a sour cream coffee cake that's really more like a pound cake and it's definitely one of my favorite cinnamon foods. In the non-food category, I like a cinnamon scented candle in the kitchen.
5. Learn by watching or learn by doing? Elaborate.
Depends what we're learning, but mostly I'm a learn by doing person.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Whatcha reading? I just finished Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano for our neighborhood book club happening today (Tuesday). I thought it was just okay, but I know people who loved it. I thought the story held promise but the character development was weak.
I'm currently reading The Secret Life of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar, historical fiction based on the true story of Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law. Enjoying it so far, but I've only just started this one.
I recently finished Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, which is also historical fiction. Based on a real event, a plague that struck the English village of Eyam in the mid-1600s, the tale follows the story of a young woman named Anna. A really interesting plot line, but I have to say one of the weirdest endings to a book ever.
I'm also reading Are We There Yet ?: My Journey From A Messed Up to Meaningful Life by the comedian Jeff Allen. I heard him interviewed on a podcast and am enjoying now reading his story in book form.
If you're reading something great I want to know! Happy Wednesday everyone!

Let's Talk
About what I don't know because it's that time of year where people are cranky and blog content is a bit thin, still I'm going to ramble on anyway.
It's cold here in the Palmetto State, BUT! not as cold as the state we previously called home. I heard our little NJ town was mentioned on Good Morning America because they got a whopping 32 inches of snow yesterday. That is a lot of snow people.
This picture popped up on my Facebook memories today, a photo snapped from my front porch six years ago. I guess piles of snow and groundhogs go together, and we had a lot of both in NJ.
Hubs is so happy he's not dealing with it right now, but shhh...don't tell him...I kind of miss seeing the beauty of a great big snowfall. Just one though. We're not accustomed to those temps anymore so it's best enjoyed from a distance. I'm here shivering in 45 degree weather counting the days until we're back living life outdoors and on the water, hopefully soon.
Did I mention here the bride and groom live in the snowy northeast?
Well they do. Many states away from the warm(ish) sunny southland and their people. Still America so there's that, but a ten hour car ride so not geographically close. I remind myself almost daily that it's good for newlyweds to establish themselves as a family unit separate and apart from their family of birth. And they're happy y'all. So so happy.
My son-in-law's job means this is where they live right now, and so many things have fallen into place for this precious couple that you can't help but see God's hand in it all. The bride even landed an in person teaching job which she enjoys as much as one can in these weird times, but still...can't one of my girls live nearby?
Maybe someday.
This is why I declare technology my best friend.
Wait, no it's not. I just remembered the cable company was in our house half a day yesterday to switch us over to the high speed internet now available in our community. Which is great except now none of the TVs are working right and I loathe having to deal with this sort of thing. Sorry for the run on sentence but ugh...
Also, hubs would say technically he is the one dealing with it, but ugh...
In other less than pleasant news, our tax organizer appeared in my inbox today.
Hello February. You're lucky you come with chocolate.
And beauty. Because y'all there is beauty if you look for it even in the middle of a winter that feels grouchier than most. So let's throw some beauty into the mix.
You thought I was going to post a wedding picture didn't you?
I would, but we're still waiting on our photographs. This one a guest snapped of the bride dancing with the groom's granddad is awfully sweet.
And don't you worry...when we get the pictures back you'll know. Ha!
When daughter2 started teaching from home back in March of 2020, she brought a half-dead plant to the house with her. A student had given her a 'bulb' which hadn't grown into much of anything save one lonely green stalk. Sadly the pot tipped over in her car enroute to our house and that lone green stalk ripped in half.
She was going to chuck the whole thing but hubs intervened. He loves to shower half-dead plants with TLC and I want you to know he brought this plant back to life. I kept saying it looked like an amaryllis, and while it grew taller and taller every day for a year, it never sprouted any sort of bud or bloom. Hubs though, did not give up and this week-
Yes he attached a grow light to a pool cue. I told you hubs is serious about bringing life to sad situations.
The world is kind of sad right now, isn't it? Yet here we are with two buds ready to pop, and another following close behind smack dab in the middle of a cold gray winter.
A gentle reminder that a little patience and some tender loving care can make all sorts of thing grow.

Birthing a House
1. In those first few weeks of knowing you're all gaga over what's happening.
2. The first sign of 'movement' is exciting.
3. Also, you feel a little bit sick. It's the hormones in pregnancy and the realization of what you've signed on for in home building, but nausea all the same.
4. There's a lot to buy.
5. Those middle months are bliss, with lots of notable progress.
6. The last 'trimester' is when things get real.
7. You pray a lot.
8. A month feels like a year and you answer endless questions about the 'project'.
9. You eat things you shouldn't.
10. As you near the end of the process you snap at your husband just because.
11. Well actually it's because it feels like your 'due date' will never ever get here.
12. And then your 'due date' passes and you try not to think about it 24/7.
13. Except you pretty much think about it 24/7.
14. You're ready for this part to be over.
15. Soooo ready.
16. You take a lot of power walks in the hopes of somehow speeding up the process or at least working off some of the stress you feel at this new wrinkle in your timetable.
17. And then you're told it's all going to happen in one week's time and there's a flurry of activity and feelings of excitement mixed with is this really finally happening???
18. But mostly excitement.
19.When it's over you'll say it was worth it.
20. A dream come true.

A Classical Hodgepodge
Home build-September 2015
Aaaand home build, September 2016
Still not living there though. That hasn't changed!
2. September is Classical Music Month. Do you like/listen to classical music? If so what's a favorite piece and/or who is a favorite composer?
I like some classical music and will sometimes play it when I'm home alone and writing. I'm not sure I have a favorite piece but Vivaldi's Four Seasons, anything from The Nutcracker, and Pachelbel's Canon in D Major are a few that I enjoy.
3. Besides The Bible, what's a book that has positively changed your life, relationships, career, or perspective? How so?
When I started thinking about my answer I decided I could make this a blog post (and I will). Several came to mind immediately, and I could easily come up with a list of ten. For now I'll go with My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers. I'm re-reading it again this year and it is absolutely jam-packed full of life-changing wisdom.
4. I read (here) these ten hobbies will make you smarter...play a musical instrument, read voraciously, meditate regularly, work out your brain (puzzles, sudoku, board games, etc), exercise often, learn a new language, write your feelings down (blog, journal, just write), travel to new places, cook different kinds of meals, participate in sports actively
Are any on this list your current hobbies? Which hobby on the list would you be most inclined to try?
I currently read voraciously, pray regularly, work out my brain, exercise, write, travel and cook. Learning a new language has been on my personal to-do list for a while now, but I haven't followed through. I'd still like to!
5. What sports traditions does your family have?
Go VOLS!
6. In a few words, weigh in on the current football/National Anthem brouhaha. Keep it family friendly please.
Not sure I can do the 'few words' thing on this topic, but I'll try. Yes it's America and freedom of speech and all that jazz, but....the way I see it, the field is a football player's workplace, and freedom of speech does not extend to the workplace. Employers can require all sorts of things of their employees and if the employee doesn't like it he's free to find another job. People pay money to see you play football, not to protest what you think is wrong with America. I really do think the league is at fault here for permitting it.
Football and sport in general is one area where people of all race, creed, and religion can share common ground. We unite in our love (or dislike) for a team or player or a spectacular catch or whatever. These protests are ruining that. They are creating division where there doesn't need to be division and I'm so weary of it.
And to kneel as a statement of protest against our police forces on the anniversary of 9-11 I think is outrageous. If I were their mother I'd be so ashamed. Remember those people dressed in Blue who went running in to burning skyscrapers as they crumbled to the ground while everybody else was running out? Remember how those people dressed in Blue were Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, male, female? Remember how they just reached for anyone of any color they could pull from the rubble? It's despicable on this day most of all that an overpaid football player can't stand and show a little respect for that if nothing else.
Standing for the anthem doesn't make you a patriot, nor does standing mean you think America is a perfect place. I know we can't force someone to feel respect, but I do think we can ask that our citizens show respect. People have died, spilled their very blood for the liberties we take for granted. The least we can do is stand.
7. Where do you have loads of patience, and where do you most lack patience?
I have loads of patience for all sorts of things including small and large children (not talking about adults who behave like children), anxious parents (I was a teacher), baking, grocery shopping, gardening, and most of the everyday things we encounter in life that slow us down or deter us from our plans.
What I do not have patience for are people driving way too slow in the left lane, particularly if it's because they're texting, (also, p.s.a-the left lane is for passing...just throwing that out there in case you're one of the drivers who try my patience), chronic complainers, laziness on the job, and technology glitches. And obviously I have no patience for highly paid professional athletes who use the 'workplace' as a means of protest.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
This is a beautiful story...take a minute to read it if you haven't already.

House Talk
Since last we spoke....
We've got walls! Whoohoo!
The dry wall is in, taped, and sanded. I think the next step is primer followed by trim work or trim work followed by primer, but whatever-
...we've got walls!
And a front door! It's not stained yet, and they still need to add siding to the front porch section of the exterior, but the door had to be up before they did that so step one=check.
The stone masons have been super busy and they are so skilled. It's a father-son-cousin-team and I love their work. There's an art to fitting the stone together so that it looks beautiful, and they've definitely mastered it-
When you make your stone selection you're looking at a little four foot by four foot sample wall and of course there's a lot of variation in color from one pallet to the next, so we're really happy with the finished product.
Wait, there's more! As of today we've also got tongue and groove in our screened in porch ceiling-
I need something pretty to look at when I settle in for an afternoon nap by the fireplace out there, so I'm relieved to know this is happening. The front porch and the back covered deck will both get this same ceiling treatment. It's so exciting to see forward motion!
Is there such a thing as too many exclamation points?
Not when you're talking house build progress there's not!!

Rainy Days and Mondays
The home build is making me a little bit crazy. I alternate between sleeping fitfully and wanting to sleep all the time. Someone wake me up when it's closer to completion please. An inspection has to happen before we proceed with insulation and dry wall so here we sit. Hopefully those things will occur in a timely manner, which I think in builder's terms means more than a day but less than a month. Something like that.
A friend from NJ who worked with hubs in his previous job was in town on Saturday, so we trekked out to the lot to show her 'the house'. Still feels more like a frame than a house, although I know all kinds of things have gone on behind the scenes. Important things like wiring and plumbing and heating and cooling, but not pretty things like cabinets and granite and hard wood floors.
Another couple who live on the lake, but who also worked with hubs in NJ jetted over to our dock so they could say hi to our mutual friend too.
When I say jetted I mean they literally jetted over. And even though the weather forecast said no rain, it rained. Hubs had taken the jet ski friends up to the 'house' for a tour, and I was sitting on the dock with our friend P when the rains came a-pouring. As the rain became heavier it occurred to me that sitting under a metal roof perched atop the water is not where you want to be in an electrical storm, but thankfully this turned out to be just a really hard fast rainstorm.
I have to say it was actually quite beautiful. I took a little video which you may or may not see here because I don't have very good luck attaching video to my blog. Or maybe it's skill I'm lacking? Anyway, you may or may not see rain, but either way know it was pretty.
I can't wait to live here.
Not right here because this is a restaurant, but on the lake here. In our house. With walls and all the pretty parts in place.
Saturday night Daughter2 and her boyfriend met us for dinner at a restaurant downtown. Aren't they the cutest?
Hubs and I spent the rest of the weekend discussing why things aren't moving faster and when they might move faster, and what can we do to make them move faster and then I napped. Because in the words of Mason Cooley...'When you can't figure out what to do, take a nap.'
Write that down and put it in your when-I-build-a-house file. You're welcome.
