Welcome to The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for your neighbor there. If you're visiting from the A-Z Blog Challenge, my letter of the day is part of question #6 today. Here we go-
1. What's a lesson you've learned from a mistake?
Listen to your 'gut', which I recognize most often as the Holy Spirit telling me to hit pause before I act. Several years ago I accepted a volunteer appointment, that I knew in my gut (my heart? my spirit?) wasn't right for me. I had already said no to the job once before, and my hubs again discouraged me from accepting this time around.
And I did say no. But then I allowed myself to be talked into saying yes, and I definitely regretted it. I learned from it too, so I guess that's something.
2. Do you salt food while you're cooking or let diners add their own? What's a food you think must be salted? Do you like pepper?
Some things I salt while cooking, but others I leave unsalted and people can add to their own taste. Certain foods need to be salted as they're cooking. I made spaghetti sauce on Sunday and added salt and that's something you can't really salt after the fact to the same effect. I don't salt eggs but I do salt vegetables before roasting.
A food I think must be salted? Potatoes...baked potato, french fried, mashed, roasted...they all need salt.
I love pepper.
3. What was the last gathering you attended and what did you do there?
We attended a wine dinner on Tuesday night, with about 50 in attendance. We're part of a local wine club so this sort of gathering happens on a monthly basis. What did we do?
this lobster mac and cheese was scrumptious!!
Dined on a delicious five course meal, each one paired with a specific wine. We learn about the wines, the area they're made, the winemakers. Always a really nice evening.
4. Your favorite shade of purple? What's your favorite purple flower?
I like the color purple, in nature more than in my home. In terms of my wardrobe I prefer the very dark shades, plum or eggplant. If we're talking flowers I love all the purples and don't think I can choose a favorite. If pressed I'd say a lilac, but I also love lavender, pansies, iris, petunias, and wisteria.
5. Share a favorite spring travel memory.
Wow. Just one? We've had so many wonderful springtime trips, most of which I've covered on my blog somewhere along the way. Since I've been sharing Easter throwback pictures here in the weeks leading up to the day let's go with this one-
Belgian chocolate in Belgium
Hubs and I spent the last Easter weekend we lived across the pond in Brussels-Ghent-Brugges. Hubs went to Belgium at least once a month for work and we both loved it. Brussels is an easy train ride from London so we took the train over and revisited some of our favorite sites.
This is outside the famous Gothic cathedral in Ghent called St. Baafskathedraal, built in the 1200’s-

And of course you can't visit Belgium without indulging in Moules-et-frites...

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I'm going to use this space for today's letter in the A-Z blog challenge. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can go to my intro post to get the 411 (The ABC's of April). Today is Day 8 and we've reached the letter H.

H is for Hodgepodge
Of course it is
'a heterogeneous mixture; jumble'
November 10, 2010. My first Wednesday Hodgepodge. Prior to the HP a bunch of us bloggers participated in a weekly link up called The Random Dozen. It was hosted by a blogger named Linda, who I don't think blogs anymore, and it consisted of 12 questions every week. 12!!
When she gave up hosting several people who participated asked if I'd consider picking it up in her place, I said yes because I enjoyed it so much, and the rest is history.
Well, not history exactly, but we carried on from there. I knew there was no way I could come up with 12 questions on the weekly, so I started out with 8 which was still three too many-ha! However, it wasn't until episode 308 (308!!) that I waved the white flag and went with the format we have today. Five questions from me, and then a spot to share some random thought of your own. Honestly that random thought is often the toughest to come up with week after week.
The Hodgepodge button changed midstream when daughter1 reworked my blog a little. We changed the color scheme so she made a new button, which we're still using today. I looked back at some of the earliest Hodgepodges and there were anywhere between 35 and 60 bloggers linking up each week.
Of course the blogging world has changed and 'home blogs' as I like to call them are not as popular as they once were. I still love them, both the reading and the writing, and enjoy seeing the old familiar and also some new faces here each week.
I retired the Hodgepodge on September 5, 2018 after 360 episodes because quite frankly I needed the break. And it stayed retired until a little thing we won't mention but that starts with a C and made the world absolutely bonkers, came around and suddenly there wasn't as much happening in real life to write about. I revived the Hodgepodge at the end of March, 2020 and here we are still. I continue to enjoy this weekly mid-week brain strain and will likely keep it up until I won't.
So what have I learned in this weekly exercise, and how does it fit with the season of life I'm currently living?
I re-discovered my love of writing as a result of blogging. Writing is a creative outlet for me, and forces me to use my mental muscles in a way very few other things do.
Coming up with questions on a weekly basis is good for the brain. I'm all about exercising my brain and writing helps. Or at least I think it does. If science is to be believed we need to work our brains to keep them sharp and coming up with these questions each week while a lot of fun, also takes some brain power.
Answering the questions each week is also good for the brain.
I love the mix of ages and stages in this weekly hop and I think we learn from each other. I've gotten recipes, faith builders, craft ideas, book recommendations, travel tips, home decor inspiration, encouragement, and so much more from blogging, not to mention the friendships formed.
The HP forces me to interact with technology, which is not my first love, but is part of the world in which we live so ya gotta deal.
Thanks for joining in here each week. A few of you have been here since almost the beginning and I appreciate that more than I can say. Happy Wednesday everyone!
OK, I LOVED learning about the history of the HP! I had questions about it and still wonder how you come up with questions for it each week, lol. I can see how coming up with the questions is good for the ol' brain!! I enjoy answering them each week, though I've not been participating too long in the grand scheme of the HP. And who on earth would have thought that the "C" word was responsible for something so positive as the HP!! Enjoyed your answers to the questions. I mentioned gut instinct as well for the first question. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteAs someone linking up with the Hodgepodge for the first time, I loved reading the history of it and the purpose. Thank you for continuing to host it and allowing new people to join in.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we went to Brugges on a cruise in the summer of 2022 and seeing that picture of chocolate brought back so many memories. We loved our short visit there so much!
Listening to yout gut is so important but also really easy to ignore, it's seldom wrong though.
ReplyDeleteI agree about potatoes, salt is a must!
That Belgian chocolate looks divine, it sounds like you've had some womderful spring travels over the years.
Thanks for sharing the history of Hodgepodge, I took a long break from blogging then was so happy to find some brilliant linkies like yours still going. Your questions really get my brain ticking so thank you again.
It is a dream of mine to go back to Belgium and see our old exchange student. This would be a great sister trip since we all knew and loved her.
ReplyDeleteSo many trips, so little time. That is why living there was so great - you could take these little jaunts!
I have had the same situations where I was roped into things that didn't feel right with people who didn't feel right. And, yes, I always learned to trust my gut more. I think we as women question our gut.
I am grateful for you and for the thousands of questions you have given us as prompts!!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Joyce- though Mama bloggers and family bloggers and home bloggers aren't a popular trend, that is not the reason I blog. I love being part of this community, writing and being creative and sharing our lives with each other. Feeds my soul. Thank you for being an amazing hostess- always love your questions!
ReplyDeleteOOOH I would LOVE to visit that Cathedral!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you shared about how you began the Hodgepodge. I found you by "accident" from another blogger I follow faithfully and although I don't tend to participate every week, when I do it's fun, the questions are typically ones I really enjoy or can relate to, and it's nice to learn about others across the globe.
I hope your bout with "C" is completely healed and that you continue to ask your questions!! God bless!!
I didn't have C...it just made room for more blogging since we were all at home so much
DeleteBloggers have proved to be a sweet and rewarding community and I appreciate this special place to come to weekly. Thank you, Joyce! Your wine dinners sound so good. I've finally and thankfully learned to say no more often without a story to go with it. Just a plain and simple no. Back in our early days in Washington State we were part of Ste Michelle Winery's Wine Club. We didn't have monthly dinners or else we probably would have stayed members for longer. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the Hodgepodge every week! It shares a birthday with me!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about chips when salting things but yes, all potatoes need to be salted! I've just made mashed potatoes and added salt.
ReplyDeleteYour wine club dinners always sound fantastic!
How interesting to read about the history of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. I've seen it around for a couple of years but have only been joining in since the beginning of this year. Yes, I agree! I find the random thought so hard to come up with! Thank you for coming up with the questions each week and hosting!
Yes, it is something if you learned from that mistake. You are right on foods that you feel must be salted. Your wine parties are sound so wonderful and that's a lot of people in attendance. The meal looks delicious. Those are good choices on the flowers. The Easter treats look delicious and cathedral is amazing. I had to look up the meal and it does sound delicious. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteHi, well I loved your H. :-) I enjoy the Hodgepodge, thank you for hosting. I found it from Cranberry Morning, who no longer blogs.
ReplyDeleteYour wine dinner sounded very delicious and fun. I love learning about how food / drink is grown to get to our tables. Farm to Table... I bet those grape growers talk about the weather often. Hee Hee!
I can't remember how I found your blog but I started participating here back in 2015. I don't make it here every week but I always enjoy it when I do. I get the volunteering thing. Moving house gave me a good opportunity to be more picky about what I volunteered for. Learning to say No is an important lesson lol.
ReplyDeleteSo fun to hear how the hodgepodge got started and how it's changed through the years. That trip looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteHow I enjoyed this Hodgepodge backstory! I may be a 'tidge envious of your monthly wine club and would love to read more. Is there a 'Big Red' you'd recommend?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed hearing the history of the HP. It so impressive that you have kept it going for so long, especially in light of how much blogging has changed over the years. Here's to many more years of hodgepodging! (Even though I don't always participate, I love reading every week.)
ReplyDeleteThat lobster macaroni and cheese looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about how the Hodgepodge got its start, as that was before I found your blog.
I started Across My Kitchen Table in August 2005, so a big anniversary coming up this year. 😊
Nice to read a little history of the Hodgepodge. I'm glad you still do it!
ReplyDeleteThat chocolate......
I've gotta know what your preference is: Brugges or Ghent? Brugges is on my list of places to go but a friend said she preferred Ghent.
ReplyDeleteAs always (and that's not an exaggeration), I enjoyed this post. But I was especially intrigued with the history of Hodgepodge and the comments you made about how it challenges your brain. I'm sure it does. I have often wondered how you come up with the themes and questions. You really have a gift for drawing out of us our opinions, experiences, and such. Do keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I remember the time when Linda did the questions. I often wondered what became of her. That's quite the story on how the HodgePodge came to this point in time. I know I wouldn't be able to think of twelve questions. Ha! I already had a post going and couldn't handle much more this time around. But I'm planning on next week if nothing gets in my way. // There is no salt or sugar in my home, hasn't been for nearly 20 years. Really began because of my husband's health and because I didn't care for extra sugar and salt. About the only time I use sugar is to borrow it from one of the kids and make Christmas cookies for our family get-together in late Nov. or early Dec. But pepper - yes, I do like my pepper! Ha! Have a very blessed day, Joyce!
ReplyDeleteThat lobster mac and cheese looks SO GOOD! I enjoyed your H today and revisiting the history a bit. I was so sad when you quit and so happy when you returned!! The Hodgepodge is always fun and I know I'm not the only one who looks forward to it!! Thanks!! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteYour wine club get-together sounds so good - fun and educational! That cathedral is gorgeous! I loved reading about the history of the hodgepodge and I'm so glad I found you and joined in. I so enjoy doing this every week (and missed it last week)!
ReplyDeleteYou do a great job at hosting and this is so fun! I spent a month in Brussels and visited Ghent and Brugge. I think Belgium is such a beatuiful country.
ReplyDeleteSo you have been in Brussels where I was exported by my parents in 1958 ! I lived there more than 10 years and then moved to Waterloo which is a sort of outskirt of Brussels (only 15 km) The last photo you show was taken on the Grand'Place I bet !
ReplyDeleteI don't participate in this weekly link up since I co-write my blog with a friend but I love reading so many bloggers' Hodgepodge entries each week. We've only been blogging for two years but, I too, have rediscovered a love of writing and I appreciate the connections I make here and all I learn along the way!
