That's The Hodgepodge Four You

Welcome to this week's edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then be a good neighbor and leave a comment for the blogger before you.

Also, I'm not going to have a Hodgepodge next week (August 4) as I will have a houseful and want to enjoy every minute with them in person. The Hodgepodge will resume the week after (August 11). Thanks for understanding.

From this Side of the Pond

1. Four words that tell us something about your July?

waiting, houseguests, boating, waiting

2. Four of your favorite summer foods?

Maryland blue crabs, watermelon, sliced tomatoes, a hamburger on the grill

3. What were you doing at a quarter past four yesterday?

Coming up with questions for this week's Hodgepodge.

4. fore!, four letter word, four sheets to the wind, ten-four, 24/7, four eyes, these four walls....pick a 'four' phrase and tell us how you relate currently

I'm going with four eyes since hubs and I both have eye appointments in early August. Which I will need to reschedule since we will have family here most of the month. I just got new glasses in the spring but it seems with every year that goes by the fine print gets finer and finer. I'm expecting yet another adjustment to my prescription.

5. Something you own that is four years old?

This house, although it will turn five in November. It's hard to believe but I'm currently redoing a couple of spaces which tells me time has indeed moved forward fast. The redo however is moving at a snail's pace.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Are you watching the Olympics? It's so so strange to see empty stands. I feel for the athletes but also for the city of Tokyo too. Such an amazing location and no tourists there to enjoy the sights, sounds, food, and especially the gracious people who live there.

Tokyo is one of my hubs favorite cities in the world. We were there right before you know what struck and I'm so grateful for the timing of that wonderful trip. Shoutout to my now lake neighbors who were living there at the time and made it absolutely 5*

Four

This week's Hodgepodge questions are one post down.

Dear Mancub,

Today you are four.

You're there and I'm here and that's okay. God has a plan for each one of us and you there and me here is part of His plan for both of our lives.

You are a world traveler.

You've spent one half of your life living on the other side of the world, seeing new and interesting sights, hearing a language not your own, eating foods most toddlers wouldn't dare touch with a ten foot chopstick, and sharing your life with us via the miracle of technology. You are far far away from extended family and that's okay.

Your momma and daddy have done a most excellent job of forming deep and lasting bonds with friends who have acted as family in absentia these past two years. Friends who will always hold a special place in the hearts and minds of your parents. Friends who will send you Christmas cards as the years roll by and who will go out of their way to visit you in person no matter where you roam.

You ask a lot of questions.

I read recently the average four year old asks as many as 200 questions each day, but that's okay. This statistic only confirms what I've known since you uttered your very first word, and that is you're extraordinary.

One of the things I look forward to most about having you here is listening to all your many questions. When you hear a new word, even in passing, you must know what it means. You don't settle for a simple answer either, and you drill down to the nth detail until you understand it completely. You are growing your brain and keeping ours young and sharp too.

You still love books.

I cannot overstate how happy this makes me. Nana has piles of books for us to share snuggled up on the couch, sitting on the porch, or riding in the car. Anywhere really.

You love big.

You and your little brother are developing such a sweet relationship as you've grown into the role of older brother and we love having a front row seat to your shenanigans.

You've learned to share your favorite people's time and attention, to understand the miracle of family love and the way our human hearts can expand and make room for more and more of it.

You should know I stole all these pictures from your momma, and that's okay. Once upon a time she was my three-year-old turning four and I see so much of her in you.

She also loves books and words and her people most of all, and we are so lucky to call her ours.

To call you hers.

To be on the receiving end of so much joy and magic.

Happy birthday mancub. You are so very precious and your Nana loves you deep and wide.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

The Hurrier I Go

psa...there will not be a hodgepodge this week... I need a breather.
The Hodgepodge will be back next week, July 28th. thanks!

"The hurrier I go the behinder I get...."  Name that author. Besides me I mean-ha! Does anyone else feel as if July is whizzing by like a fast moving train?

I'm not sad about it because we are trying not to count the days til our daughter and her family arrive stateside, except we are for sure counting the days. My daughter has post it squares on the side of her frig and when we Facetime with them,  the mancub likes to pull one down and tell me how many more days til we're on the same landmass.

He does not actually say 'landmass' but that is what we're all waiting for.

Also if I say landmass he will say, 'What's landmass' and I will explain it's a large area of land, a continent even, and then he will  say 'What's a continent?' and I'll explain there are seven and we live on North America and they live in Asia and he'll ask 'why do you live in North America?' and I'll tell him soon we'll all be together and that's the important thing to know. Whew!

We are so ready for in person hugs and kisses and baby boys on Nana's lap and little men fishing off the dock with their Pawpaw and books read by their favorite aunt and all of us in the very same house at the very same time. Honestly I try to stay busy because if I think too hard and too much about it all I might burst.

Company helps and thankfully we've had a steady stream of visitors to enjoy and share with, this place we now call home. We lived in Maryland for nine years and had wonderful friends and neighbors there. While we've seen these friends here and there through the years none had been to the lake house until this summer. Set number three arrives tonite and we can't wait.

We have had the best time catching up with everyone, remembering the sweetness (and occasional saltiness) of raising tiny humans together, and now hearing about how all these once upon a time littles are full fledged adults nearly the age we parents were when we first met as young moms. Say what?

Time is funny, isn't it?
And it's Lewis Carroll for anyone wondering about the quote up top.

Besides our Maryland peeps we also had some college friends visit last weekend or I guess since it's Sunday it would be two weekends ago now, but as I said we've been busy and our calendar is so full I am on a day to day basis in terms of what's happening.

Did I tell you my daughter and her family are moving to one of our favorite states in the US of A? She wrote a post about the transition and it's wonderful and moving and tender and if you've moved a lot or if you've ever had to leave a place behind that marked you deeply and for all time then you'll enjoy her words. The link is here-Preparing For The Next Goodbye

They will be about a six hour drive from us and while many of you are thinking wow-that's not all that close, we are jumping for joy because this is the closest they will have lived to us since they married almost seven years ago.

And so we wait. And we enjoy the meantime. We feel so much gratitude for friends who knew us when... for neighbors we could call when we needed a cup of sugar, a helping hand, an adult conversation...

For sunlight that sparkles and a warm summer day...

For daughters who get married and move many states away, but who still come home to sip coffee on the porch...

For fire in the sky...

...and a God who cares about all the details of our lives.

Vive la Hodgepodge

Going to keep my answers short and sweet today because it has been a little bit 'Grand Central' like here. All good and lots of fun, but busy. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. Tell us about one small blessing you have counted in the past week?

Time spent with old friends. Is that a small thing? It somehow feels bigger than small, but either way was very precious.

2. Bastille Day is celebrated on July 14th...have you ever been to France? Any desire to visit there, and if so what would site or city would you most want to see? (pretend for a minute international travel isn't an issue)

I love France and have made many trips to different parts of the country.

I love the food, the fairy tale castles, the city lights and the seaside burgs, the language, and just the general aesthetic of most things French. They seem to know how to make things lovely.

Oh, and the champagne. Let's not forget that!

I especially love the countryside but wouldn't turn down a trip to Paris either. And I think every American should see the beaches of Normandy...

...and in Colleville-sur-Mer the row upon row of white crosses in a cemetery there. Perhaps the haters here in America would hate a little less if they stood where 18 year old boys have bled and died to keep them free.

3. A food associated with France that you love?

A traditional lemon and sugar crepe would be one of my favorites. A croque monsieur rates high on my list too. And all the fancy food served with a delicate touch and a glass of bubbly. The cheese and bread and the coffee served in one of those charming cafes... I'm sure there's more...

4. Something you recently purchased where a coupon was involved? Do you regularly shop with coupons?

I never buy anything online without searching for a coupon first. I ordered some birthday goodies for my grandson recently and used a discount code. That's how we say coupon in 2021, right?

5. You have to give something away this week...what will it be?

There's always something in my closet to be donated. I like to let a few things accumulate then run a bagful to the donation center.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My limelights are really showing off this summer-

Bon Mercredi!

Aloha Hodgepodgers

Welcome to July and this week's edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post. And be sure to leave a comment for the blogger before you, because that's what good neighbors do. Now here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. July 5th is National Hawaii Day...have you ever been to Hawaii? Any desire to visit or make a return trip? Pineapple, mango, or guava...what's your pleasure?

I drew my first breath in the Aloha State and would love to make a return trip someday. I like all the fruits listed, but if you make me choose I'll say pineapple.

2. Last time you were 'thrown in at the deep end'? Explain.

I took on a volunteer position at church and because I was a late add on (to fill a vacancy) I missed all the training. I'm learning as I go, but am loving it. Deep water is challenging, but swimming there can be lots of fun too.

3. Sun, sea, sand, salt...your favorite when it comes to summer?

Hmmm...it's a tough call but I'm going with sunshine.

4. Bury your head in the sand, the sands of time, draw a line in the sand, pound sand, shifting sands...pick one and tell us how the phrase currently relates to your life in some way.

Maybe the sands of time...see # 6.

5. On a scale of 1-10 (1 = make your own rules and 10=like a warden), how strict were your parents? If you're a parent where on the scale do you land?

I hope my girls answer these questions today. I'm curious as to where they'll say I land. My parents were not overly strict, but they weren't lenient either. There were household rules to follow, chores to be completed, and consequences to your words and actions. There was also a whole lot of love, so a good balance. I'm going to say my parents were a 7 and  I'm probably in the 6-7 range as well.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We had to say goodbye this week to the sweetest, gentlest, most loving dog we've ever known.  Daughter2's greyhound...

When daughter2 told us she was getting a greyhound several years back, hubs and I both kind of scratched our heads. We didn't know much about them, other than they were bred to race and sweet Gemma was a former racer.

As it turns out greyhounds make wonderful pets. We used to laugh and say it was like living with a stuffed animal because she was such a quiet soul. We are so grateful for all the tender love and comfort she has added to our family. We've known and loved a lot of dogs y'all, but this one was something extra special.

Saturday Sunnies

The sun is shining, the weather is wonderful, and it's the birthday of this land I love. Thank you to all the men and women around the globe protecting the freedoms we cherish. May we be mindful of your sacrifices both large and small, today and every day.

Doing a little phone dump here because summer is flying by at mach speed and my blog is where I keep track of the time. Actually my phone is where I keep track of the time. If it weren't for the photos snapped there the weeks would be a blur.

So what's been happening in these parts?

Well for starters we had company. Last summer was so strange in terms of no company. No friends coming to visit, no family barbecues or porch sitting, no fun dinners with piles of friends. Nothin'.

We are back in high gear this summer though, and on Monday some of our Maryland cul-de sac neighbors were in the area and spent a couple of days here at the lake. Our children collectively put about 100,000 miles on their Little Tykes car once upon a time, and even though everyone is all grown up I see them still, little blonde pony tails bobbing in the sun, negotiating a turn at the wheel.

There were only about six houses in our cul-de-sac and we all had kids about the same age. It was the sweetest little spot to spend a childhood. We had backyards with swingsets but most of the time you'd find all the kids congregating in the middle of the court for games of kickball, roller blading, flashlight tag, and one memorable winter (I don't need to remind them which one!) sledding down the ginormous hill made of plowed snow right in the center of our street.

The day they arrived the weather was grand and we showed them the lake and even boated to dinner. The next day brought some morning drizzle so we headed over to college town to see what we could see before grabbing lunch. By the time we got home the skies had cleared enough for some cornhole and a swim.

So many shared experiences raising our children beside the bay, and it was so great to see them in person and catch up on everyone's lives and goings on.

Thursday evening I hosted a BBQ for a group from church. Originally I thought we'd number about 15 or 20 so hubs volunteered to smoke pork butts on the Big Green Egg.

We ended up a group of more than 30, and kudos to the grillmaster extraordinaire who started the meat just before midnight and produced a fabulous entree at 6 PM the next day.

We're pooped by the way.

In completely unrelated news, we've been moving my sewing machine table from house to house and I finally said enough, I'm not sewing anymore so let's go ahead and get rid of it. One of my friends made a table out of hers and I told hubs about it and next thing you know we've got this-

I love it! We removed the box from the legs, ordered a piece of glass with a beveled edge, and ended up with a new old patio table.

Also, by 'we' you know I mean the hubs, right?

This morning we looked out and saw two young deer walking across the drive, no doubt dining on something from my yard they shouldn't be dining on, but they are so cute it's hard to be annoyed.

Daughter2, aka the newlywed Mrs.,  is on her way here as we speak. She's going to spend a few days and collect the sweetest dog in the world who has been staying with us since their honeymoon. Her pup is not well and it will be so hard to send her back to PA in a few days. Dogs fill some of the coziest spaces in your heart but they break it a little bit too.

Daughter2's mister has a work trip this week so she's going to hang out with her momma and I cannot wait to pepper her with questions, talk too much while we try to watch our favorite cooking shows, ask her to straighten my hair every other day, and show me one more time how to do something on my phone that she's shown me a hundred times. I bet she can't wait to get here.

Enjoy this holiday weekend everyone! America may not be perfect, but she learns and she grows and tries her best to stay true to her noble ideals. "May God shed His grace on thee..."
