No Kidding It's The Hodgepodge

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. What's your favorite room in your house and why?

Does a porch count? Because the porches in my house are definitely my favorite spaces and we use them like rooms.

We have a covered upper deck, a screened porch off the kitchen, and then the lower level space with a covered patio, a covered dining space, as well as an uncovered patio. Lots of options for sitting outside.
The upper deck is my favorite because it's easy to just step out there first thing in the morning, and the view is so pretty.

I do love the new lower level space, but we haven't spent as much time there yet. It does have the potential to become my new favorite, especially in the summer months.

2. What's something that will instantly annoy you?

Getting behind someone in the left lane driving below the speed limit. Even if they're driving right at the speed limit I can feel annoyed. It's the passing lane. Move over. Please.

3. May 28th is National Hamburger Day...will you celebrate? How do you like yours? If you're not cooking at home is there a favorite place you like to go for a burger? Did you ever work in a fast food  restaurant?

A hamburger on the grill is one of my favorites, and I think yes, we'll 'celebrate' (AKA-grill a burger on May 28th).  I like mine with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayo. I have never worked fast food, and there's not really one favorite place here for a burger. There is a place that's more or less a sports bar in town and they do make a good burger.

4. What are three scents you like?

It's hard to narrow it down to just three, but I'll try. I love lemon (or any citrus really) and also cinnamon in terms of candles and baking. For the third I'm going with the scent of freshly mown grass, which I wouldn't want in a candle or perfume, but which does have the power to wing me back to my childhood in the blink of an eye.

5. What do you miss most about being a kid?

I don't know if miss is the right word, because I don't have any desire to be a kid again. I do sometimes have a longing for the sense of carefree-ness I felt as a child. (I looked it up because carefreeness didn't sound like a real word, but it is indeed a real word).

By carefree I don't mean free from having any responsibilities because I think we're made to have those, and I like having some responsibilities.

I'm thinking more along the lines of not being weighed down by the world and all its trouble and strife.  The division, the conflict, the endless complaining.  I know that's part of growing up, taking those things on and trying to make the world better in whatever way we can, but the 2020's so far have been more than a little exhausting.

My childhood was for the most part carefree, and for that I'm grateful. I was protected from the heaviness of the world that, while different than what we have today, was still there.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I started this post a little late so will just say enjoy this last week of May...it's flown!
Happy Wednesday everyone~

  1. I said freshly mowed grass as one of my former favorite scents. I can't smell it at all anymore. I can still smell some things- it's odd the scents that are completely gone. I do miss that one quite a bit. For sure drivers not going fast in the fast lane is annoying. The amount of driving related annoyances for me is almost unlimited. Why can't everyone be perfect like me (LOL!)? I *have* on (rare) occasions found myself guilty of doing something that annoys me when others do it. Oops!

  2. Your porches have the most incredible views! I think my porches run a close second to my kitchen. They are where we are learning the art of relaxing - such a lost art form in this age of time with all of the busyness of the world.

  3. Your porch is an amazing space and what a view!
I don't drive and in one way I am glad, I think so many things would annoy me.
Yes! I totally agree, I would love the carefree-ness of being a kid!
    Have a great Wednesday!

  4. Your answer about the carefreeness is exactly what I was thinking but you did a much better job of writing about it than I did!!

  5. We said the same thing for question 1! I get what you are saying about carefreeness and I think teachers get to experience this in the summers as much as an adult can!

  6. I also like lemon and cinnamon scents. Not only is this the last week of May (which in my opinion, has 364 days!!!), but today is the last day of school for teachers.

  7. You have fabulous outdoor spaces and it's so nice to have that good flow from the inside out. I think if we had a screened in patio we'd spend more time out doors in the summer. Our flying pests and mosquitoes have a way of sending us back inside. I like how you expressed the carefreeness of childhood but like you being a child again is not something I'd desire. Having a Monday holiday has a way of mixing up a week. :) Happy end of May to you!

  8. Your porches definitely count as rooms! They're all lovely.

  9. Joyce! SO FUNNY - I almost wrote in my post that "I know Joyce will choose her porch/deck as her favorite room" - ha! My sister's patio is her favorite too. I've never had a "great" outdoor space. . .someday. . .!!
And we also share the same annoyance ;). This was a fun week to participate. Thanks for the questions.

  10. I also said that carefree feeling. It's the lack of weight you have to carry around; kids don't worry about bills or any of those terrifying future things.

  11. Yes, I would say your porch counts. They look wonderful. That's funny about the left lane and true, it is the passing lane. Your burger sounds delicious. Those are good scents. Yes, fresh cut grass does smell good. Good point, not being weighed down by the world. Enjoy the rest of your day.

  12. Ha Ha ... your answer to #2... my boys will agree. They call them "Left Lane Campers."

Our son's friend Ced is heading to your state today for basic training at Fort Jackson. Our Sam had his basic at Fort Jackson too, it is bringing back a lot of memories for me.

  13. I love a good hamburger, and grilled outside are the best. Yes to tomato, lettuce, some onion, pickles, and mayo. I had my first smash burger yesterday, out to lunch with my friend, Mali. It was good but I only ate about half of it. I'm still trying to lose some weight and try to be concioius about portions. Sigh. (I've lost 42 pounds since September!!)

  14. Now, I am hungry for a good burger! I love lemon and cinnamon scents too. I hope you have a lovely day. This post was so much fun!

  15. Oh I can definitely see that your outdoor spaces would be a favorite! I also like the smell of freshly mowed grass. I always like it when it rains after the grass is mowed. Thanks for hosting this each week! Have a good Wednesday!

  16. Fun questions today and I just love your porches. Trying not to be envious! We have a nice screened porch but it just isn't super liveable right now. Needs a good bit of TLC. Fresh-cut grass is a delightful scent indeed!

  17. Your views are just so beautiful! I also love citrus and cinnamon scents. I worked at Wendy's for a summer in high school. I liked it, and I appreciate the perspective it gave me for those kinds of jobs.

  18. I would totally say my porch too! Its where you will find me the majority of spring - summer & fall :)

  19. My upper deck would be my favorite "room" too (though not in winter obviously). We just had burgers on Monday and while I wouldn't mind celebrating again I don't have enough burgers left for dinner tonight. I like mine with sauteed mushrooms but never any sort of mayo, mustard, ketchup... though we have a pub up here called the 99 that has a great Vermont Cheddar burger that has this fabulous Vermont maple mayo that pairs so well with the bacon and onions they put on top that I do love.

  20. I nice porch can be such relaxing place, I have never heard of national hamburger day but then I live in a different country

  21. Your views from the porch are beautiful. I would say that our back porch is one of my favorite places, too. I like your answer to what you miss about being a child. I think that carefree feeling is what I miss, too, and wish I could experience it more as an adult. Thank you for hosting!

  22. Those patios are beautiful! They would be my favorite too. I like the smell of freshly mown grass too but it now bothers my allergies. Well, dang it. I have to agree about the passing lane!

  23. Your porches and outdoor spaces look and sound amazing. I loved my porch in our last house and some kind of outdoor living space is high priority when we start looking for something else here. I loved your answer to #5 - very similar to what I wanted to say, but you said it much better. Hope you're having a great week!
