Hodgepodging Like An Adult

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. What's an adult problem nobody prepared you for?

I think adulting is somewhat of a learn as you go proposition. My parents prepared me in many of the ways that count-work hard, don't spend more than you earn, prioritize the eternal, and so on, but so many things we learn by doing. Or sometimes by not doing and suffering the consequences.

The amount of 'administrative' tasks you have to do-schedule-be on top of-plan for, etc is something I still don't feel prepared for. I mean we're retired and we're empty nesters...why is there still so much paperwork??? Yes, much of it is digital now, but it still requires attention. There are taxes, insurance, medical 'stuff', home repairs and maintenance, automobiles, etc. Pretty sure I imagined at some point some of these things would somehow go away or take care of themselves lol.

2. How tuned in are you to all the recent food related health news? Have you gotten rid of your scratched cookware? Did you pay attention to food additives before they made the news? What's one healthy eating/cooking/food shopping habit you need to adopt?

I'm tuned in. Have I made any big changes? Not really, but I will be getting rid of any scratched pots and pans I still have. I grew up in a home where my mother cooked every night. From scratch. We had a salad with every dinner, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and we drank milk, not soda. I also cook from scratch so we've never eaten a lot of processed foods.

I do eye the ingredients if I'm buying something boxed, bottled, or canned (like cereal, cooking oils, etc) and while I know it's a big shift for some of these companies I'm glad to see unnecessary additives removed from our food. I'm somewhat amazed at how quickly major companies have gotten on board, once we started really talking about it.

One healthy habit I need to adopt? Less sugar.

3. What's getting worse and worse as you get older? How about better and better?

Worse and worse...my eyesight. I miss my 20/20 vision and my un-spectacled face.

Better and better...I know what's important and can keep my eyes on that.

4. Are you more of an indoor person or an outdoor person? Elaborate.

I'm a bit of both. I love the outdoors, love being out in nature, but if being an outdoor person implies adventure then it's less true. I'm not mountain biking, skiing, that sort of thing.

I like to hike and camp and swim in the lake and read on the porch and I feel nearer to God when I'm out in creation than almost anywhere else.

5. If you had an expert personal assistant today, what would you have them do?

Strip all the beds, wash the bedding, and then remake the beds. I've had a houseful for over a week and all the guest beds now need changing. All the guest beds are downstairs and my laundry is upstairs so there's no way I can knock that out in a boot. I'm trying really hard not to go up and down the stairs so hubs will be my personal assistant this week in terms of laundry.

Also, the next several weeks.

Also driving, putting things on high shelves, getting things from the lower level garage frig, vacuuming and more. Hi hubs!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Who went shopping on Amazon Prime Day? What did you buy that I need to know about?

  1. Oh, yes, the administrative tasks- not fun! This is so bad but whenever someone in the family needs to go to the doctor, I first feel badly for the person needing to go and then I feel sorry for me for knowing I'm going to have to deal with paperwork from insurance, bills from the various medical providers, etc. I like your better and better answer- I feel like that is something really positive about getting older- there's winnowing of earlier goals or ideas of what is important. Thanks for the link up and have a great day!

  2. Oh yes to the paperwork, it is a never ending job! My girls are older now and I thought lots of it would shift to them but now they want my help with their life admin. lol
I said the same, my eyesight is getting worse, I need to book myself an eye test.
I forgot about the beds, it's such a chore and I imagine even more so for you with the boot on.

  3. Oh yes, I bet a personal assistant would come in quite handy for your for the next few weeks! Your favorite outdoor activities are just like mine; I'm not one for extreme outdoors either aside from hiking. I don't have Prime but I did up placing an order (without any sort of sale!) yesterday when my fitness tracker/watch broke... and the water filter in our fridge turned red.

  4. I could have answered most of my questions the same way as you did! I bought a few things on Prime Day - not because they were Prime Day - but things I thought I needed.
I hate stripping sheets, folding sheets, and putting them back on the bed. Tom strips them, I wash them, and he puts on the bed. Everyone else is responsible for their own. I would totally have a cleaning person do that if I had one.

  5. My husband had to do all of that for me last year when I broke my ankle. It was hard to get him to do things though!

  6. Amazon Prime Week started off big for me. I went into my app to purchase two needed items, and thanks to Amazon’s marketing team, which cleverly put in front of me other items I’d recently looked at and were now on sale, checked out with much more than I expected. You’ve gotta love those sales though!

  7. It's so nice to have a hubby who pitches in happily. I didn't know about the Amazon Prime Day. Have you heard of or watched Surprised by Oxford. The scenery in Oxford and the tension of the main actor toward Christianity was so well done. I think it is available on Prime. Thank you for hosting, I appreciate it.

  8. The paperwork never ends! I love the picture of the lake. "Be still and know I am God" is the scripture that came to my mind.

  9. Eyesight ... yessss! Little compares to the feeling of freshly-laundered sheets, but it's nicer when someone else does it.

  10. Hi, I agree with the eyesight... oh goodness me. I currently am wearing progressive lenses. I am trying new lenses that are making a "honeycomb" effect in the lenses, making the progressive not so noticeable. It is rather hard to explain in the way my optometrist did. Ha! I like it so far.

Continuing to pray for your ankle.

  11. I love the advice your parents gave you. I agree, so much paperwork. Your mom did a great job with her cooking for you. I am really glad about ingredients that will no longer be used, especially for the the children. Same here with eyes and I currently need to get some brown spots removed. You do get some great outdoors at you home on the lake. I love it. I love what your assistant will be doing. Mark had me order all kinds of things on Amazon yesterday. One was a camera for the front of house. I ordered my peanut butter today. (sorry about my ugly post today)

  12. The being outdoors/nearer to God idea resonated with me this week since I interviewed at a Catholic school. I was worried they would grill me about whether or not I attend church so I was fully prepared to tell them when I stopped: 20 years ago when I asked priest friend of mine to officiate my wedding but he couldn't because they church didn't allow it. And I couldn't wrap my brain around a God who would create all this beauty and not allow you to get married in it!
