Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. So glad you're here! If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-
1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask? When I was in college in Tennessee Saturday Night Live had a regular skit with Joe Piscipo where someone would say, 'You're from Jersey? I'm from Jersey. What exit?' People thought it was hilarious to ask me the same when I would say I'm from New Jersey.
Of course I'd reply Exit 4 because everyone in New Jersey knows their exit.
When people are considering retirement or a move to the lake they often ask what we do to fill all that free time. I tell them there's no shortage of things to do here, and what to say no to is more of a problem.
2. Did you participate in 'Greek Life' when you were in college, or have children who did? If so what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list?
I was in a sorority and it was a wonderful experience. I made lifelong friends, was given many, many leadership opportunities, I developed skills I've used in work and volunteer positions all of my adult life, and found joy in helping others too. Philanthropy is a big part of sorority life, and if all you know of Greek life is what's portrayed on television or in the movies, your vision of the experience might be inaccurate.
I have been to Greece, but haven't seen the whole country. We were in Athens in 2005 and had a fabulous time there. Can you tell it was warm?
The ancient buildings, the history, the beautiful Aegean, the food...such a fun trip.
3. Do you like Greek food? If so what's your favorite dish?
I love Greek food. Who doesn't love a Greek salad? That's probably my favorite, but I enjoy lots of different Greek dishes...gyros, spanakopita, tzatziki, and of course baklava. There's a Greek restaurant in a little town outside of Asheville as you're heading towards Tennessee that is so so good. Whenever we're going that way we try to plan our trip around a stop there.
4. What incredibly common thing have you never done?
A tattoo?
5. What is a telltale sign that you're upset?
I'm an open book and you can probably tell just by looking at my face. If I'm on the verge of tears (which happens easily if I'm mad or sad) you'll know it.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I might have gone down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to find pictures of our trip to Greece.
Look at those young teenagers there. Gulp.
Those are great pics! So cute! The original fam of course gets you choked up. I have never had a tattoo either so that would have been a good answer.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t think of baklava. I once helped my son make a batch for a class at school, and it was wonderful. It was a labor of love, as most cooking is, but the result was worth it.
ReplyDeleteI always love to see the photos of your trips when your girls were young.
I don't have any tattoos. Good answer to that question! Athens is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe retired life does sound busy and I have a feeling that my impression of Greek life is inaccurate as I've only seen it on the TV.
ReplyDeleteI haven't got any tattoo's either, they are such a common thing now a days but I've never found one that I love enough to commit to it for life.
Great pictures from Greece! I have read several books set in Greece and the extreme heat is often mentioned. I don't have a tattoo either- would be curious to know the percentage of Americans who have them by age group. I didn't know anyone from Jersey until I began law school and befriended a lifelong (until then) New Jersian. (sp?) She mentioned the exits and the large number of strip malls/shopping centers in the state. Great questions as always- thanks for the link up!
ReplyDeleteMy answer to the first question was similar to yours! It annoys me when people do this...it never seems very friendly. I love those pics of y'all from Greece!
ReplyDeleteLove those photos from your trip to Greece! I haven't been to Europe at all, but whenever I go, Greece is near the top of my list of countries to visit. I love a lot of Greek food, but not Greek salad. Your answer about which exit in Jersey made me laugh. We lived in Jersey for about three years and I wasn't asked that, but we always made sure to specify that we were from SOUTH Jersey because it's so very different from the northern part of the state, and also different from Atlantic City. Hope you're having a great week!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely do well eating in Greece; it's all yummy!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos you shared of your time in Greece! It does look hot. Thanks for sharing your experience with your sorority and giving us another take on that part of college life. I could have said Tatoo, too. :) Good answer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet throwback picture of your teenage girls! I am another one who doesn't have a tattoo. One of my best friends is from New Jersey. I will have to ask her what exit sometime :). Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteNo tattoo for me as well.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy when you share your family photos and our travel photos. I probably will not get to most of the places you have visited, so it is fun to see the photos and learn about the places through your blog. :-)
That's a good answer about the exit in New Jersey. Interesting answer to #2. I'm glad it was a great experience for you. Lovely photo. Now that I think about it there was a place in Florida I would go to in Florida for Gyro's which are delicious. I don't have any tattoo either. Sounds a little like me when I get mad. I always enjoy seeing your girls when they were younger. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteNo tattoos here either! Not only was I not part of a sorority but I don't know of any family members or friends from high school that were either. These are some really great throwback photos!
ReplyDeleteI need to look that restaurant up when I go back to Asheville. Thanks for that info.
ReplyDeleteI have two tattoos...one with colon cancer for hub and a heart for my daughter.
Great questions this week and I love your answers. Your photos confirm my thoughts on Greece, hot, hot, hot. Must find the coolest month to visit because the historian in me would love to see some of the sites.
ReplyDeleteI understand the rabbit hole - I'm trying to compose a blog post for next week showing 60 years of married life. Talking about a deep hole. LOL Best of luck to your Vols this football season. We play Clemson on Friday night, so that may tell the tale of what's ahead for the season.
ReplyDeleteI love the family pictures from Greece. What a special time together. When I went down the Greece rabbit hole, I remembered that my daughter learned to ride a bike while we were at the resort there. She was always afraid of trying, and mastered it at age 10 on vacation. We always joked that she could say, "I learned to ride a bike in Greece." The tattoo is a good answer...I should have thought of that! As we get closer to retirement, I think we will find plenty to stay busy with. Thanks for the fun link party.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your memories with us; and thanks, too, for teaching me about the really good aspects of being in a sorority.
