Working my way through the alphabet in this month's A-Z blog challenge...
Day 4-D is for Dishes
If a pretty dish enters my home you should know it's probably not coming out. I mean if it's yours I'll return it, but if I've bought it myself or it's been handed down to me I'm keeping it possibly forever.
Doesn't everyone need an asparagus plate?
I live on a lake and everything is super casual here. We use melamine and plastic tumblers for the outdoor spaces, but I think a beautifully set table in the dining room is one of life's little pleasures and I want more of it.
I feel like people push back when you want to make something a little bit 'fancy'. Guests don't want you going to any trouble, but I say going to a little bit of trouble is part of what makes a dinner gathering special.
I know everyone is fine with paper plates and easy clean up, but I love the aesthetic of real dishes and I don't even mind hand washing my china whenever we pull it out. Which isn't often, but when we do it feels so civilized. Hubs and I always enjoy having a debrief too, as we wash up dishes after a party. It puts a bookend on the evening.
I have a set of Christmas dishes. I have many many serving pieces I purchased on trips to Italy and the potteries in Stoke-on Trent in the UK.
I have some lovely little glass sherbet style dishes that belonged to my grandmother that I've only used a couple of times but am determined to use again. Plus they were my grandmas. Doesn't the law say you can't give away your grandmas dishes?
My daughter1 has my grandmother's china and it made my mom so happy when she moved out of her house knowing these dishes went to a granddaughter.
I'm a believer in using the good dishes. In the end they're just dishes and if one breaks it breaks. What's the point of having nice things if they're always tucked away in a drawer or cabinet?
When I was visiting my daughter2 a couple of weeks ago we went into a beautiful home store and my eyes instantly landed on a set of gorgeous bar glasses that would be so much fun for summer. I hemmed and hawed and thought about how I might justify the purchase (they were awfully pricey), and when I asked myself aloud where would I put them my daughter said, and I quote, 'just buy them mom, you'll figure it out when you get home.'
I love her.
But I didn't purchase because they were somewhat girly and the bar area is kind of hubs domain so he might not appreciate these. Or he might be happy if they make me happy? I can always go back, right?
When you share posts like this I feel like we could be besties! Yes, yes, and YES. Except. . .I hate washing dishes. I can't say that is what keeps me from using the "good" china. . .I just really don't like that task. I like my good pots and pans too much to ruin them in the dishwasher but dishes and silverware, I need modern convenience for that :)
ReplyDeleteThe bar glasses. . .last year I made a "frivolous" purchase of some glassed that I thought would be "perfect" for our G&T's. I love them - very heavy cut glass. I still haven't found a place for them - I keep them in an inconvenient spot, but still use them and put the away. I drive the kids nuts b/c I DON'T like paper or plasticware and always want a tablecloth. I'm wondering when I'll be able to introduce cloth napkins? I tell them they can do what they want in their own homes ;)
That asparagus dish is great! If I had more storage I would have more serving pieces for sure - but I do love what I have, which is the point, right?
Happy Easter - enjoy your spring season and all the "lighter" things that make it the best time of the year :)
Love this! I have a fondness for beautiful dishes as well and I think I do a pretty good job of using mine for special occasions. Definitely not for every day but for some days and meals. Your dishes are so pretty! I love the sherbet dishes- that touch of pink is gorgeous on them. Your dining room is so pretty. I'd be curious to know how many homes on lakes (in general) have formal dining rooms (given the obvious choice to be outside a lot as weather permits). I love that yours does! Many new builds here do not contain formal dining rooms. I hope your weekend is going well!
ReplyDeleteIt was a point of debate for us when we built, but in the end hubs saw my side of the equation and is so glad we have a dining room. We have a lot of people here, and now a big extended family with all the grandchildren and we use the dining room regularly. I think some on the lake have a dr and some just have a designated space off their kitchen for eating.
DeleteI agree with you! Use the dishes! They hold such special memories with hopefully more to come! I love setting a beautiful table for gatherings with family and friends and I cherish the dishes and serving pieces that have been passed down. Wishing you and your family a blessed Easter!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dishes! I used to have some fancy china when I was married and hosting holidays, but now I make do with ordinary dishes…
ReplyDeleteWe don't really eat asparagus but I really do love that plate! Your dining room is beautiful and I much prefer to eat off proper plates rather than paper ones. You have a great collection!
ReplyDeleteJoyce, I have a "thing" for platters and bowls. I have too many, but I do not have an asparagus plate. How do I not have an asparagus plate? My granddaughter has my china now. I have my Pfaltzgraph set and my Correlle set, so not so fancy but better than paper! Your dining room is beautiful. I'm enjoying your A-Z!!
ReplyDeleteHa I don't have an asparagus plate but I do have some fancy things - a punch bowl set that's not actually a bowl it's taller and has a lid and a ladle with matching cups that were a wedding present. I love those dishes of your grandma's - so pretty. For everyday we just have plain white but I'm thinking of jazzing it up a bit - we're down a few dinner plates so I need to buy some new ones!
ReplyDeleteDishes do speak to my heart and pretty glassware, too. It brings me joy to set a table for company. I love all your thoughts here. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is one beautiful dinner set and those glasses are so pretty, the asparagus plate looks good
