A Beauty Of A Hodgepodge

Here are the questions to this week's Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog then hop back here on Wednesday (September 16) to add your link to the party.  See you there!

From this Side of the Pond
1. How do you define beauty?

It may be cliche to say, but beauty comes from within. Of course there are people who are physically attractive, but I think real beauty goes deeper than that. Confidence, the way you treat others, and being 'real'  all make one's beauty something more than just appearance.

2. Have you ever taken a trip by train? If so where did you go and what did you think of the experience? If not do you have any desire to do so? Where would you like to go? (You might find inspiration here-The Best Train Trips in The World)

No, but it's definitely on my bucket list. I've ridden a lot of trains around Europe, but have never taken a real train vacation. I'd like to take the Rocky Mountaineer as we have several friends who've done that and loved it. Course if money were no object you could book me on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express which runs from London to Venice. There may be options in terms of route, but I think that's the most popular. The original Orient Express route went from Paris to Istanbul, but that service ended in the late 1970's.

3. Shell shocked, bombshell, bandshell, shellacking, in a nutshell, walking on eggshells...choose one and tell us why you chose it, or how it relates to your life in some way currently.

Our home town team took a shellacking in the college football season opener. It was painful. They looked slightly better Week 2.  Our VOLS won games in weeks one and two both though, which made us happy.

4. Tacos, pistachios, oysters, clams, eggs...your favorite food on the list that comes in/with a shell?

I like all of the above so it's hard to choose...eggs would probably be my favorite on the list.

5. Are birthdays a big deal in your house? Is your own birthday a big deal in some way? Elaborate.

Maybe you should ask my family lol. I try to make birthdays a big deal, including my own. I like party planning and celebrating the people I love. I want you to feel special on your birthday and I try to do something to make sure that happens.

As far as my own birthday goes the thing I want most is to know I was thought about prior to the day. I know people say if you want the day to look a particular way then say so, but the main thing I want is someone else to do the thinking and the planning and the booking and the cooking.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I've been a bit off the grid here lately and have so much to catch up on. Just know I probably won't. I want to get back to my blog and hopefully I will. In the meantime...

I'm definitely turning a year older this week.

  2. Happy birthday! I'd love someone else to do the planning and make me feel special too... but history has taught me not to expect that. So if I really do want a fuss made I plan it but mostly I'm content to see what happens. This year my husband did a great job-- in fact I'm looking so forward to my "gift"/ overnight stay next Friday.

  4. I totally agree that beauty comes from within!
I said the Rocky Mountaineer for the train trip too! It looks truly amazing!
Now I know what shellacking means, I had no idea when I read the question. lol

  6. What great answers you gave! That Orient Express would be a dream come true. I can't even imagine seeing all that beauty! It's okay that you don't catch up here on your blog; just start with one day in the present and write about something that transpired if the mood strikes. I hope you know we're all here for you and love you. Thanks for sticking with the Hodgepodge even in the spite of life's upheavals.

  7. First, Happy Birthday Week!!! Taking a train is also on my bucket list. The football game was hard to watch even though I was pulling for UT.

  9. We were definitely on the same page with #1. Remember grief is a process and must be treated as such. Let me encourage you to treat yourself with a lot of love and patience. Happy Birthday!

  10. That's interesting about your 'prior to the day' thought for birthday planning and greeting. Don't tell but I tend to disregard late greetings or 'afterthoughts' about my birthday (from my significant others). Happy birthday week to you. I haven't done a total train trip, either. Our daughter and son-in-law did for their last trip to the UK. They traveled from London to Leeds and then on to Scotland and had a very successful trip around Scotland and then back to London and home. Take care...

  11. Lovely answer for beauty. I hope you can make that train trip someday. Sorry about the college football. Interesting that eggs are your favorite.I assumed birthdays were a big deal to you, however I do understand wanting others making a big deal out of yours. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! Have a wonderful day.

  13. Happy Birthday Joyce!!
I would love to take a trip on the Orient Express. The original route would have been a lot of fun to take as well.
Our family caught a nasty cold, I am not myself today. I even had to sleep in, which felt good, but then you feel behind in all things. Oh Bother!

  15. With Blogger misbehaving of late, I think a lot of us are behind or confused or just feeling at a loss with regard to keeping up with each other on our blogs. And of course, you've had some especially distracting things to handle in recent weeks, too. Love the picture of you as a little one. Have a wonderful birthday!

  17. Happy Birthday! May you feel loved and thought about. I enjoyed your answers. I'm seeing a few people mentioning blogger acting up so I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed.

  19. Happy Birthday!!! I hope your family treats you with a wonderful day!
I like what you said about wanting to know that you were thought of prior to your birthday. I feel the same way, and part of it is because of having a birthday so close after Christmas it has so often felt like my birthday was an afterthought or that the celebration of my day could be "bundled" with Christmas instead of its own thing. As a child and teen that was so hurtful. As an adult, I just wanted to feel like some thought and preparation went into my birthday rather than people seeming to be taken by surprise by it, Guys, it literally happens on the same day every year. You could put it on your calendar. LOL Thanks for the fun link-up - hope you're having a great week!

  20. Happy birthday week! Don't worry about catching up on blog reading. I'm sure your mind is a million other places lately.

  21. Aw, Happy Birthday to you!! You are such a blessing to so many! I am totally with you on the birthday thing- I just want people to remember and know and actually think about me, not just because Facebook sent them a reminder.

  22. First of all, I love how you have grown this link up. And though I don't always participate, I always appreciate your thoughtful questions and everyone's thoughtful responses.
Happy birthday. Your sweet Prince Charming's message on FB was lovely.
How 'bout those Vols? Of course, the first game was a 'given' - I always feel so sorry for the other teams in those lopsided matchups. My brother is going to tomorrow's game and it should be another lopsided game but he assures me the little schools we play get lots of money to play us and lose.

  23. I hope you had a great birthday and yes, that means so much when someone does some advance planning! Take your time on coming back to the blog as you are working through so many things. I have a friend going to the TN Vols game today.

  24. I *know* I commented previously, but I don't see it here?!
Anyway, Happy Birthday!! I totally agree with wanting to know I was thought of in advance of my big day. Especially with a birthday right after Christmas like mine, it often felt like (at least when I was a kid) people overlooked or forgot my birthday, or thought it was okay to just bundle it with Christmas, which I didn't think was fair.
Hope you're having a great week!
