Wednesday Hodgepodge in D Major Vol 48

It's Wednesday which means its time for the weekly Hodgepodge. Everyone is welcome to play along...answer the questions on your own blog or fb page and add your link at the bottom of my post for all the world to see. Here are my answers to this week's questions-

1. Have you ever been 'asked' to report for jury duty? Were you chosen to serve? If not, were you happy or disappointed?

Funny you should ask. I should ask? I recently received my very first summons to report for duty in the not too distant future. It's our local court which is better than one of the bigger courts but you still have to be 'on call' for two days. You may or may not have to report and even if you do report you may or may not be asked to serve. I would normally not mind serving but that particular week my hubs will be out of town and I was hoping to spend a few days with my mom. Criminals. They are always putting a damper on the fun aren't they? Oh wait, innocent until proven guilty. I bet they don't pick me.

2. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being very) how mechanically inclined are you? Give an example to back up your answer.

I'm going with a 2. I don't think I'm very mechanically inclined. I can change a battery in a smoke detector but not in a car. Pretty sure this is one of the reasons I got married. Just sayin'.

3. Beets-cabbage-cauliflower-butternut squash...of the four, which is your favorite fall vegetable?

I love them all. Isn't that what I say every time we have a question involving food choices? If I can only have one I'm going with cauliflower. But really, I love them all.

4. What do you recommend to overcome self-pity?

Do something for someone else. Lending a hand or an ear or a meal to someone in need always takes me outside of myself and that's a good thing.

5. Do you enjoy classical music?

Yes. I don't listen to it every day but I do like it and have some on my ipod. My favorites are Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers (really anything from The Nutcracker), Beethoven's Ode to Joy (especially when played on the piano by my darling daughter2 ), Vivaldi's Four Seasons -Spring- because it's beautiful, and Pachelbels Canon in D Major which was played at our wedding.

6. October is National Book Month...what's on your reading list this month?

I just finished Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and I highly recommend...an amazing story about the triumph of the human spirit. Next on my list are Brooklyn by Colm Toibin and Bloodroot by Amy Greene. I could go on. And on and on. My reading list only gets longer.

7. What is your idea of 'cute' ?

babies, shoes, puppies...the very definition of cute

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Is anyone following the mess on Wall Street which has now spread to cities around the country? We watched a recap on the local news the other night and I can only imagine what this is costing the tax payers of NYC in rubbish collection and police overtime.

I realize there are people with legitimate gripes but seriously is shooting heroin, using the street or even parked cars as your toilet, and 'procreating' in public really helping make your point? One gentleman, when asked what he was protesting, shouted triumphantly-'CAPITALISM!' When the interviewer asked what he would like to see in its place he was completely stumped.

I appreciate the right to protest our very free nation affords its citizens but in my opinion this has gone beyond protest and looks mostly like an excuse for bad behavior. What exactly are they hoping to accomplish? Mob mentality is rarely a good thing. It makes individuals forget they have a brain and can think for themselves.

Whew. Sorry for the rant. I best go listen to some calming classical music now.

  1. oh my on your random thoughts!! I have friends in NYC right now ... they posted a pic of the protesters they've seen on facebook & his comment to the pic was "I think I'm going to protest against this many unbathed bodies!" LOL It is sad though ...

  2. Enjoyed the questions, Joyce. They didn't require too much deep thinking (my brain thanks you for that). Couldn't help but spend a moment considering your random thought(s). I don't watch much news; however, with the holiday on Monday, I did have a few minutes. I was surprised that school children were visiting the protests. The kids were interviewed for the news, and their answers were just so pat. Seriously? Kids don't really understand what this is about, do they? Ugh.

  3. I finally joined in this week!
I don't understand the Wall Street protesting either.
I may have to add those books to my list.

  4. P.S. I wondered why "Unbroken" sounded familiar. My hubby just bought it on the recommendation of a co-worker. (I may have to borrow it!)

  5. Just listened to Canon D and will now have to download that piece. Very relaxing, which is why I love classical music. Gratzie!

  6. Here's how 2 men got out of serving yesterday: They both said that they had a problem with judging another's actions. Unbelievable. Who doesn't feel "uncomfortable" doing that? (That was what one of the men said.)

  7. Wow a 2! I didn't even give myself that high a number, good for you. I hear that the protesters in NY have cost a little over 2 million in overtime pay and cleaning up after them! Makes no sence to me either. Maybe if God sent some heavy rain or snow, they would all go home.

  8. I agree with your self pity answer that is a perfect way to see outside yourself....like that. This summer on our beach trip everyone was reading unbroken...need to borrow my hubby reader and read it. I agree with your random...after living in Europe you get use to the protests...but an agenda is key and ideas for change even better.
    Have a great day!

  9. It was a fun Hodgepodge this week. Not a lot of thinking required :)

I'm with you on the protesters--they don't seem to have a clue. It could be because they are being encouraged (and paid) by someone else to be there. I remember Glen Beck warning against this very thing, just a few short months ago. Too bad these guys weren't watching...

  10. I would have said babies and puppies too! Hope you having a good day. Maybe we can do another NJ blogger meeting soon.

  11. Love the hodgepodge! I'm a big fan of classical music, and I've never served on a jury. Yet.

  12. Our answers to #4 were the same--only you phrased yours more nicely. :O)

  13. That Wall Street news is very disturbing - I think you are right about it being an excuse for bad behavior. These are interesting times...

As far as jury duty, I was called in once but told the judge truthfully that my kids would not do well in a daycare environment they were unfamiliar with (which they would be sharing with the children of the accused). Although I did get out of it, I would like to be a part of a jury when life is a bit slower.

  14. I found this article interesting about Wall Street protests written by a UK reporter: http://wolfblog.dailymail.co.uk/2011/10/dont-confuse-occupy-wall-street-with-a-protest-its-a-mob.html

  15. Cauliflower? Really? I think if I have a least favorite veggie it is Cauliflower. Oh well, to each there own. I say Amen to your rant!

  19. You can postpone if you want. I was on call for two weeks this year. I said babies and puppies too but I would say a purse instead of shoes! I don't have a clue of what is happening on Wall Street.

  20. I am totally with you on #8. I have a basic idea of what's going on, but I'm not spending much time watching or thinking about it. The vast majority, to me, seems to just be looking for an excuse to behave deplorably in public and maybe get their 15 minutes of fame.

  21. I've got to get Laura Hillenbrand's book. I loved Seabiscuit! Right now I've been on an Erik Larson kick. My kids grew up listening to classical music as they did their schoolwork. :-)

  22. Enjoyed your answers, sorry I missed this week, but I had other things on my mind. lol. I am not much of a classical music person, but that was pretty! Thanks for sharing!
    until next time... nel

  23. Great advice on #4. You never have to look very far to find someone whose situation makes yours look like a walk in the park, huh?

  24. I'm such a classical music dufus. I've heard them all but the only one I knew the name to was CanonD. I've never been a fan but you've hit on the ones I do like. Thanks for sharing!

  25. Congratulations on getting your first summons.
I have only been summoned twice, and didn't serve either time.
My hubs gets summoned every few years.
I have never understood how they pick people to serve.

  26. I think you are more mechanically inclined than me!

  27. Love your answer to number four..

    Have a great day..

  28. Funny, we both mentioned batteries. I love your music selection and the one you played- especially at weddings :)

  29. I loved your definition of cute.... babies, puppies and some shoes are cute!!! So are lots of other things... Like bags and clothes etc.

  30. Ditto on your random thought. I keep asking the Hubby what is it exactly they hope to accomplish? And when will they leave? He has no answer for me. Ha.

  31. Hoping to read Unbroken soon. I will also take a look at the ones on your reading list. I love good recommendations, especially for my book club, which is a group of mostly "older" (think 80's) ladies. I love them!

  32. A good way to rid yourself of self pity.

  33. Blogger was not being nice to me yesterday so I didn't get to comment! Anyway, I know your weekend is going to be fantastic since the girls will be home! I can't wait to pick Deanie up at the airport...during rush hour. Seriously, you'd think she would pay attention to that when she booked her flight. LOL Like you, I don't care as long as they come home!!! Have a GREAT family weekend!
