Appreciating The Hodgepodge

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Thanks for joining the fun here on Wednesdays. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. What's something you think is under appreciated. Explain.

Gentleness. The world is harsh. It often seems like everyone is shouting and nobody is listening.  When I encounter someone who speaks gently, who is able to make their point without name calling, swearing, or belittling another I find myself wishing there was more of it.

2. As winter approaches how do you stay productive?

Hmmm...am I productive in the winter months? We're more like bears who hibernate in order to conserve energy to be used later. We go mach ten here three quarters of the year so I actually view doing less as being productive in it's own way. Winter is a time to hunker down, catch up on some of the longer books on my to-read list, rest, and make plans.

3. What's a popular food you don't like?

I'm not a big fan of quinoa. Or kale. I'll eat both but they're not something I choose to cook/eat at home. I like brown rice, couscous, and chickpeas all of which are good substitutions for quinoa in many dishes. And while I don't care for kale I do love spinach so why eat kale?

That being said,  I'm not a picky eater at all so if I come to your house for dinner and you serve me quinoa with a side of kale I'll eat both.

4. What do you think is more interesting-art or history? Elaborate.

I enjoy both I guess for different reasons. Art is so often a reflection of the times in which it's made so in a sense we need art to help us understand history. If I have to choose I'd say I don't want to live in a world without art, but I find history more interesting.

5. What advice would you give to someone half your age?

Develop a habit of daily prayer. One sentence or whole pages.

Start a simple stretching or exercise routine.

Wear sunscreen.

Think for yourself.

Cultivate a grateful heart.

Read more, scroll less.

Print your pictures.

Write it down. A single sentence about your day or big thoughts about your life.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

42 days until Christmas...how's that for random?

  1. You mentioned the "C" word lol. I'm trying not to panic about that as we're going to be away for 2 weeks and when we get back we'll already be in December. Great advice to your younger self.

  2. Your list of advice items is so good! Print the pictures-YES!! Among others, that one is a gem :). I like your answer to the art/history question- you articulated it so well. Gentleness is a great way to respond; I think a few verses in Proverbs mention gentleness. Great questions and answers! Have a wonderful day!

  3. I both do and do not want to think about Christmas! But I am dead-set on enjoying all of November first. :)

  4. Gentleness does seem to be in short supply these days.
" Bears who hibernate" LOL!!! It's nice to have down time and be cozy!
Your advice is good. Does anyone even print pictures anymore??!!

  5. I'm not a fan of kale either though this winter I'm using kale in place of spinach in my quiche and soups and things because I had a few bunches of fresh kale from our CSA boxes I didn't want to throw away and I really don't like it raw. I'm finding I rather like it cooked into things! Your advice is great; I particularly agree with the print your photos & read more scroll less.

  6. Great answers! I agree on most of what you said! I had quinoa yesterday at school in Erica's shrimp bowl. It was good!

  7. I really enjoyed your answers!! Our history professor told us that art is a part of studying history -- especially if it was painted/drawn during the actual time period. Your random thought - eek! Oh my goodness!

  9. I loved all these answers! Gentleness is such a good one. Other than peanuts and beans, there are certainly things I wouldn't cook for myself but I would eat at someone else's house. I can't believe I didn't write wear sunscreen! I preach that to the younger people around me all the time! Christmas is so soon!

  10. I've never tried quinoa, but will be crossing it off my Possibilities list. Wish I'd begun using sun screen years ago, and fully expect a (well deserved) reprimand at my dermatologist appointment this afternoon. Thanks again for these questions!

  11. That was a good point about todays art speaking to our times which as it becomes part of history. Thoughtful answers all around even the random thought. Don't want to be surprised or would we, like that first Christmas. I liked your thoughts about the winter months...

  12. Excellent point for #1. Sounds like a nice winter. I don't like those foods either and I do eat a lot of spinach. I'm glad you like art. I need to go to museums more. I loved being in Europe and doing that. I really need to start reading but can't make myself do it. I think it would help me to get out of my head. I love your advice. I agree 100% with printing out pictures. The kids don't do it. They put trust in their phones. I am stressing already about Christmas. It kept me up last night. So much to do. I need to start ASAP!

  13. I enjoyed your answers. Gentleness is definitely a forgotten virtue in today's world. I agree about the food items. I'm not too picky, but there are foods I just choose not to cook!

  17. I especially liked your answer about being productive in winter - resting and conserving energy IS productive! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! I also struggled over whether I considered art or history more interesting but I chose art. After reading your answer, I can see your logic as well! Thanks for hosting - hope you're having a great week!

  18. Oh yeah gentleness is very under appreciated in todays world as it is not as common as it once was, the world is often a hard place. Yep history over art and I like the idea of a daily prayer

  19. I'm wondering, myself, if I could consider myself productive during the winter months. I always have the best-laid plans but my motivation seems to evaporate! Not a kale fan either. I have friends tell me often how delicious this or that kale salad is - but, I'll pass.

  20. Kind of late commenting. Great answers. I just ate a dish yesterday that had kale, and it was good, but there was almost too much kale. I agree about gentleness as well.
