Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge, and bonus the letter M in the A-Z Blog Challenge. You'll find my entry for that in today's random thought. Scroll down to question #6.
If you've answered today's questions add you link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. It won't be taxing at all. Now here we go...
Wait. One more thing. Hodgepodge links only here today, please and thank you. And now here we go for real...
1. Big week in the US of A...do you do your own taxes? What's something you've found 'taxing' lately?2. When it comes to travel are you a last minute packer or a lay it all out a week in advance type? Do you struggle to pack light? Share a packing tip that has worked for you.
I am not last minute except for those things that can only be added last minute. I am more of an overthinker when it comes to packing. I like options, and I like to have somewhat of a plan for what I will wear each day. If I'm flying I have more self-discipline, but with a car trip all bets are off.
My packing tips? I have traveled a lot but still am not sure you want packing advice from me. Use the packing cubes. It keeps things organized in your suitcase and you can group items in whatever way works for you.
3. April is National Grilled Cheese Month. Hmmm...who knew it got its own month? Do you like a grilled cheese sandwich? What ingredient do you add to take yours to the next level?
In hosting the weekly Hodgepodge for many years I've learned there is a national day and/or month for everything under the sun. Not complaining though because it helps me come up with questions when my brain cannot.
I love a grilled cheese sandwich, and it's even better with a side of tomato soup for dipping. I feel like grilled cheese is a winter lunchtime meal and rarely make one in the summer. I will order a fancy grilled cheese on occasion, but my favorite is the plain old fashioned kind with bread, butter and plenty of melted cheese. No need to doctor it up.
4. There's a well known quote that says-
'A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are built for." John A. Shedd
Is constant growth necessary or do you think it's more important to prioritize stability and peace in your life?
I've had seasons where I've been tucked safely in the harbor and that felt necessary. There have of course been many seasons where I've been tossed on the waves which, while unpleasant and confusing, were also likely very necessary.
I'm not sure anyone's life is all smooth sailing. I think we can and do grow in rough water, but growth can also happen while in a place of stability and peace. Sometimes we need a more gentle environment to be able to look at our lives and see what's working and what's not.
Ideally we need a balance of growing and rest. Think about the natural world where plants lie dormant in the winter and grow like wildfire in the spring. We humans need something similar.
Now in terms of spiritual growth I want that to be ongoing. I want to always be growing more like Christ which I think is what we're made for.
'Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.' Colossians 3:2
5. Let's wrap this up with a fun spring this or that-
- daffodils or tulips tulips
- lemonade or iced tea half tea half lemonade is my favorite
- gardening or hiking both, but if I have to choose I'll say hiking
- ladybugs or butterflies butterflies
- umbrella or raincoat both, but I am partial to a cute umbrella
- floral patterns or polka dots I like both...my answer would depend on where the pattern is going; is it a top? a dress? a pillow? my bedding?
I'm using this space for today's letter in the A-Z Blog Challenge, continuing my theme which is The Things We Keep: An A-Z of Ordinary Objects.
Day 13-M is for the MGB
The MG is a right hand drive vehicle which can freak people out when they pull up beside us at a traffic light. Hubs used to sometimes take our dog with him and the dog sits in what would be the driver's seat in the US so there are lots of double takes by people passing by.
We drive it on country roads mostly, and try not to get into interstate traffic or super congested areas if possible. We never put the top up so we only drive it in good weather. It wreaks havoc on my hair but we don't get out in it every day so I deal. I am strictly a passenger because she's a tad fussy.
The car is almost sixty years old, and we've owned her for more than twenty ourselves. I can't imagine getting rid of her, and hope maybe someday hubs can hand over the keys to a grandchild. None of them will be driving for years yet so it won't happen anytime soon, but maybe someday.
For now...
...we cruise.

Fun car! I'll bet it's a sight with your dog in the driver's seat!! We had a "fun" sporty convertible for a few years. It was quite small and Donnie bought it for the girls to take their drivers license test in since the cones for the maneuverability test were the same distance apart no matter what kind of car you used for the test- the smaller the car, the easier it was to not hit a cone! That man would do anything for his girls and if it meant HE got to occasionally drive a car he'd wanted for a long time....well, so much the better!! I like your answer for the "deep" question and I also like half lemonade/half tea :). Thanks for the link up!
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely car but I bet it guzzles petrol and spare parts are probably expensive too. Fun to drive in an open top car though. It looks like it has an inbuilt soft top? You'd need that here in the UK with weather being so unpredictable lol.
ReplyDeleteI loved your answers and agree that I pack with a different mindset if I am flying vs driving. What a cool story about the car and love those pictures! As always, thanks for hosting & enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteTom doesn't drink but often orders an Arnold Palmer - half tea, half lemonade. That car is really cool! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI covet that car (not really . . .because that would be a sin, right?). I should rephrase and say that I really really love that car. Could y'all come to Alabama and give me a ride, please? haha! Our friend always wants Arnold Palmer's (half tea/half lemonade).
ReplyDeleteI loved all of your answers! That MG is adorable, and I love the flag you have covering it in the garage. I loved what you said about the ship in the harbor, and how growth can occur in both seasons. I basically said the same thing on my blog today. Happy Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteThat car looks so fun- I just love having the top down in the nice weather- immediately puts us in great moods! I loved your this or that list and found that I liked most of the options so they were tough choices! :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds helpful having an accountant do your taxes.
ReplyDeleteOh yes to packing cubes and my girls love a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup.
That car is beautiful! My dad loves old cars and has a couple, he would love one like that.
My parents both used to have MGs! My husband's co-worker has two and he works on them himself, which I think is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI use packing cubes but I find it hard when I'm away to use the things from the packing cubes and then put them back or add them to a laundry bag!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun car!!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun that MGB is and with right hand drive ta-boot! Great photos of hubby's beauty! My sister ordered a MGB-GT in British racing green that she picked up on her trip to Great Britain and Europe in 1972ish. As soon as she and her best friend made it to Belgium in her pretty new car they were in an accident. UGH! She got it repaired and shipped it back to the USA. I remember how excited I was when she could pick it up in Long Beach. I loved driving that car! I was sad when they sold it after she was married. Good answer to question #4. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteA fun, fun, fun car. :-)
I liked your packing tip. Thank you!
Joyce, I have no clue how you do that A-Z, however, you do a wonderful job. Sorry I haven't been around that much. You travel a lot and I can't even imagine packing for all of your trips. Dipping your sandwich in tomato soup sounds good. I love your answer for #4. #5 was fun. Love the MG. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I'm taking a break from publishing my own blog posts, but I am checking in with my blog buddies every few days. I enjoyed this post so much, especially all you had to say about the car. It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't I think of Arnold Palmer! Even when that isn't an option, I usually mix lemonade with my sweet southern iced tea. Enjoyed reading all your answers, and especially those we share in common. Also, loved seeing that incredible 60-year-old car and imagined how much fun you both must have had with it. You never cease to amaze me with how you make time to do all you do.
ReplyDeleteJoining in this week to get my butt back into blogging. Definitely an overthinker and an overpacker but hoping to put together outfits (eek) before I go to try and stop number 2. I love your red MG, my brother had one and drove my bridesmaid to my wedding to it. I know that we don't have pictures of the car because he got angry with me however my marriage is no more so am hoping he's now forgiven me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I got a call from our tax accountant on my way home from the airport on Monday... I messed up Alec's taxes which messed up my husband and mine's. Love the car!
ReplyDeleteGreat answers. Thankfully we too do not do our own taxes.
ReplyDeleteI am fond of an Arnold Palmer drink!! However, I never knew this drink existed until a couple of years ago, not it is one of my favorites. I use my packing cubes when packing and really like them.
ReplyDeleteMy wife loves those.
DeleteHi Joyce, I love that picture of you both on the car. I agree, we can grow during rough waters if we choose to learn from it and not let it get us down. It can be hard. Having friends and the Lord really helps!
ReplyDeleteI haven't done my own taxes in years. We have an accountant do them.
ReplyDeleteAnother quote: A sailor belongs on ship and a ship belongs at sea (I was in the Navy).
My former boss (Danon) loves Arnold Palmers and so does my son Joe. Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce, and for the photos of your Hub's MG. In my way back former life, my then husband had an Austin Healey convertible. It was lots of fun to drive in Ohio. It is way to sunny and hot to ride with a top down here in Florida... melanoma machines. My Joe was a CPA and I remember well tax seasons and the stress that went with them. He always tried to be done on the 14th, even if it meant putting someone on extension.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun car! Michael had a red 1970's corvette for awhile, and I think we both regret that we sold it!
ReplyDeleteFun answers and what a fun little car! I did a challenge years ago that went for 30 days and that was tricky. I'd like to try the A-Z Challenge. I think I might need to think ahead and pre-write some posts if I did it.
ReplyDeleteYour MG reminds me my youth ! I had a boyfriend with the same red car ! The car was nice the boy less !
