A Summer Bucket List

The calendar says summer which means it's time to revisit my spring bucket list and move on into this new season. This was my spring bucket list...

I kept it short and sweet and still didn't do all I'd planned. I did a lot though, and there were so many fun spring happenings that didn't make the list which means I pass.

Not that it's a test, but I don't like leaving lists uncrossed.

Go to a Farmer's Market...not yet. I'm adding this to my summer list because I still want to get there. We just did not have a weekend where it worked this spring, but summer's my favorite for fresh produce and lots of grilled fruits and veg.

Tackle the attic. Oops. Nope. And now it's hotter than h e double hockey sticks up there so I think we'll push this task off until autumn. Pretty sure last winter I moved the task to spring and since I'm not worrying about it in the heat of summer I guess you'll see it again when autumn rolls around. Hi hubs!

Kayak. Done. Once but at least we got out there. We'll do more kayaking this summer and nobody will love it more than the little brown dog.

Dye eggs with the kids. Celebrate Easter. Host dinner. Wow, raise your hand if it feels like Easter was a hundred years ago? In reality just two months. Well, technically a lot longer than two months, but you know what I mean.

Anyway, this one was done-done-and done and I loved it all.

Write a love letter. Hmmm...I'm going to say yes because I wrote my grandson a birthday letter four days before summer rolled in. I think when I put this on my bucket list I was thinking more of the hubs, so maybe I can still make that happen. I like writing letters and we still need to officially celebrate our anniversary.

Hike a trail new to us. Nope. I wish we'd been able to do this, but between the weather and my ankle we didn't get to this one. We don't do a lot of hiking here in the summer because it's so hot, but never say never.

Host a Derby party. Yup. Whoohoo! It was lots of fun too.

Pick strawberries and make jam...fail. There's always next year, and thankfully daughter1's mother-in-law makes strawberry fig preserves and always shares.

Visit a garden. Does my daughter2's raised beds count? Ha!

Probably not, but I loved seeing all her plants and look forward to tasting something she's grown.

See a ballet. This was one of my favorite springtime activities. Daughter1 and I went to the International Ballet's performance of Don Quixote to celebrate her birthday. The costumes were beautiful, the dancing exceptional, and there's nothing quite like a mother-daughter day to bring the smiles.

Spring was busy. While I only managed to complete half my list, there were lots of fun spring events that happened, but weren't listed....my sister and niece came out to the lake one weekend for brunch, the 'kids' moved out and into their own home, we had a whole week with both girls and all the grands in the house, took our first boat ride, celebrated a soon-to-be new momma, a grandson turning three, 41 years of married life, and more. It wasn't dull. Or quiet.

Now bring on summer...

Zeroing In On The Hodgepodge

Hitting Volume 600 of The Wednesday Hodgepodge today on this last day in the month of April. Thank you for adding your thoughts, your creativity, and your bright ideas to this little link up each week. I've been inspired, entertained, and encouraged by your words.

If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. If you're here for the final A-Z post in this year's challenge you'll find that in my random thought at the end of the Hodgepodge. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. My very first edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge was published on November 10, 2010 (linked here if you're curious). Tell us something about your life from that era.

When I hear someone say 2010 it doesn't sound like all that long ago. Then I think about all the life lived since then and it feels like forever. Is fifteen years a long time?

I don't know why some of these pics wouldn't cooperate in size, but fifteen years in and I'm still technology challenged.

2010...
I had short hair-

...one daughter still in college in South Carolina and one recent (May) college graduate, also living and working in South Carolina.

Hubs and I were living in the NJ suburbs, a rural corner of the state that was beautiful, expensive, full of wildlife, and a short car ride away from Manhattan.

We had a Gordon Setter who would have been 8 years old then, and we did lots of hikes in the nearby countryside with her.  Quite a few city walks too.

Hubs was traveling the globe and I was managing the home front. I did some volunteering, a lot of road trips to both South Carolina (my girls) and South Jersey (my family), and took some fun trips with the hubs too. I learned to blog. I participated in a Women's Bible Study, a book club, a women's club, and Bunco.

And I went to boot camp at 6 AM five days a week. We had a lot of snow.

2. What's a song you love that relates to time in some way?

There are quite a few songs that came to mind when I sat and thought about this, but I feel like I have to say Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce because its perfect. So poignant, so poetic, and so beautifully written. It's timeless. Such a talented songwriter who sadly died young.

3. May is nearly upon us. When did you last need to yell 'MAY DAY-MAY DAY!!'?

I haven't had any near disasters that required actual shouting, but I've definitely asked for help recently. This is where I am right now...the most recent call for help was asking hubs to see if he could get the lego hair off a lego head because my grandson wanted to put a helmet on the figure instead.

These lego heads are the size of my fingernail, maybe smaller, and it was not budging. Hubs had to get some little tool out to make it happen but he succeeded. Whew.

If you don't know what I'm talking about don't let it keep you up at night lol.

4. How do you feel about food trucks? Is this a dining experience you enjoy?  Do you have a favorite What's something you've ordered from a food truck?

I think this might be an unpopular opinion but I'm not a huge fan. I like a table when I eat. I don't care if the food is from a taco truck as long as there's a seat nearby.

There are a couple of Mexican 'restaurants' here that started as food trucks but have expanded so that they feel more like very casual restaurants now. Still operating out of their truck but the truck stays parked and the owners have added covered patios with tables, along with restrooms and landscaping. One of these 'trucks' we particularly enjoy and visit often.

5. We're bidding farewell to April...what are three adjectives you might use to describe the month you're leaving behind.

Busy, yellow, hopeful.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

It's the end of the alphabet today in the April A-Z Blog Challenge. I've enjoyed the push to write and my theme has allowed me to reflect on some of the life lessons I've learned. Today's post will likely not be one that lands in deep water because Z? Hmmm...

#AtoZChallenge 2025 letter Z

Z is for Zigzag

'one of a series of short sharp turns, angles, or alterations in a course'

Like all the years of A-Z-ing here on the blog I'm going to keep this last letter pretty simple. Everyone's happy to be at the finish line and no heavy lifting is needed. Just wrap it up. Today's Hodgepodge actually inspired me to look back at my blog, and looking back at my blog means looking back at my life.

It's been much more of a zig zag than a straight line. Writing about it is like that too.

When I started blogging I wrote primarily about life in England and our transition back to the US after several years of living away. There were kids in college, a husband traveling, and a new house in a new town. There was figuring out life in an almost empty nest, navigating family grief, and a lot of praying for the young adults we had raised.

As time moved forward we celebrated graduations, weddings, retirement, and a new home build in yet another new town. The married kids moved too, started families of their own, and made us grandparents which is a whole 'nother zig in the zag of life. One of the best I'm going to say.

I got older too. I'm not the mom of college kids I was when I started writing here and I'm glad my blog has come along for the ride. It's a tangible reminder of all the life we've lived and how God has gone before us to every new city, neighborhood, house and circumstance. He's walked beside us as we've zig zagged through decades of marriage, parenting, moving, adjusting, changing, growing and living.

In the missteps and on the mountaintops He's been there.
He is faithful.

'Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for he who promised is faithful.' Hebrews 10:23

A Hodgepodge DIY

Welcome to our first Hodgepodge in the month of April. Time's a flyin' isn't it? If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post then be sure to hop over and leave a comment for the blogger before you. Or all the bloggers if you're feeling chatty. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond

1. No foolin'! April is here. What's one fun thing on your April calendar?

I'm going to a fundraiser with a group of friends this month and the event has a 1920's theme. Everyone will dress up which should be fun. Also, I found out on Monday Allie Beth Stuckey will be speaking at the local university in April, and I signed up for tickets for both my daughter and myself. I've followed her for years and love her podcast. My daughters went to uni with her which is kind of a fun connection.

2. It's often said, 'A fool and his money are soon parted'...what's the last thing you wasted money on?

I bought a pair of tennis shoes which were super inexpensive but I didn't like them at all once I tried them on. I intended to return them so I set them aside, then promptly forgot about them until the return window had closed. Bother. I donated them, so someone who needs a new pair of shoes will I'm sure be glad, and maybe that makes it not a total waste.

3.  April 2nd is National DIY day. Are you a do-it yourself kind of person or maybe you're married to one? If so, what's the last thing you DIY-ed. If you're not a DIY-er what's the most recent job you had to hire someone to complete?

I am not a DIY-er, unless we're talking cooking and then I am a make it yourself kind of cook. Most of our married life hubs had a job requiring long days and a lot of travel, which doesn't leave a lot of room for DIY.

He has always enjoyed taking care of the yard and did a great job with that through the years. Now there's an aching back to think about, so something's gotta give. While he still does a great many things in the yard, we also pay for someone else to do the tasks that might be deemed backbreaking.

Most recently we've hired an electrician to hang a fan and add some outdoor lights. There's no power in the space currently so it's not simple. As soon as he started talking about drilling through a wall I tuned out. He's done other work for us and I trust him to do the job.We would not attempt electrical work of any kind ourselves.

4. Do you eat lamb? If so do you have a favorite dish that calls for lamb?

I like lamb, but other than the occasional lamb chops it's rare we serve it at home.  I will order it in a restaurant if I see lamb chops or rack of lamb on the menu. We ate lamb fairly often when we lived in the UK. It was more readily available at a reasonable price, and it's not easy to find where I live.

5. Do you fit a stereotype in some way? Explain.

I looked up stereotypes of women my age and some of the descriptors I found were- forgetful, weak, passive, stubborn. Also, not tech-savvy and out of touch with trends.

There's a kernel of truth in most stereotypes which is how they came to be called stereotypes, and I'm some of these were more accurate several decades ago. Times have changed. Women now approach aging much differently than they did 50 years ago. Our expectation today is to live longer, be active longer, and contribute to the wider world or at least our corner of it, to whatever degree we're able.

Do any of those descriptors fit me? Well I will admit to being just a little bit stubborn, but that has nothing to do with my age. Just ask my siblings.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm participating in the April A-Z blog challenge this month and today is Day 2. I thought about trying to jam a whole post into my random thought this week, but in the end made today's letter a separate entry. You're welcome. If you're following along you'll find letter B in the post just after the Hodgepodge.

Here I'm sticking with my original April plan, which was to use this space to share some favorite Easter throwback pictures. Here's one for today-

Easter, 2010. College students. Statement necklaces. Short hair.
A lot will happen in the next fifteen years.

Springing

Spring has sprung which means it's time to check in on the winter bucket list, and add some new to-do's for spring. Out with the old and all that jazz.

Let's review. My winter bucket list looked like this-

1. Spend a day crafting each month. Nope. Nada. Zilch. Did not happen. Not enough hours in the day, too much going on, not inspired to pull out my crafting bits and bobs when there are already lots of extra bits and bobs out right now.

2. Try a new soup recipe. I give myself an A+ on this one because the recipe I tried was so good and definitely a keeper. Everyone, kids and adults alike, loved this Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup-

3. Organize the laundry room cabinets. Didn't even try. There were a lot of things happening here this winter that were not on my list so something had to give. A whole house clean will be happening soon, so this chore can be a part of that.

4. Hike a new to us trail. We didn't hike any new trails, but did revisit one of our favorites that we hadn't been to in a while, and we enjoyed that a lot.

.5. Read a classic. Done. I read one in January (The Good Earth), one in February (Wuthering Heights) and I'm wrapping up my March classic now (Pride and Prejudice). I've enjoyed these books so much, and am in awe of the language. I plan to read a classic each month this year and so far I'm on track.

6. Clean out the kitchen drawers. Giving myself a B- on this one. I got to some, but not all of the drawers but since it's a relatively quick chore I'll finish it up in the next couple of weeks.

7. Celebrate Sugar's first birthday. Of course this happened and we had the best day celebrating our little sweetheart. I wrote a whole post about it here (My Tuesday Version of Hello Monday). And I always write my grands a blog letter on their big day and this is hers-Sugar Sugar

8. Buy something pink. Yes. I bought a pink sweater to wear to Sugar's sweetheart themed party. It was a little on the warm side that day (it was supposed to be cool and cloudy, not warm and sunny), but I wore it anyway because it was on point with the party theme.

This is the sweater, but this is not Sugar. I don't have a single picture from her birthday where I'm in the sweater, but I promise you I was. All the pics I have with me in them were taken before I changed. Whatever, here is the sweater and this is Little Miss. Pink everything is her favorite so she is a fan of my sweater too.

9. Choose Valentine treats for the grands. This one also happened. We were in charge of the grands the weekend of Valentine's Day as my daughter and son-in-law went to an out of town wedding. I bought some fun little things for them to have including magnifying glasses, sunglasses, little boxes of conversation hearts...that sort of thing.

10. Write a love letter. Hmmm. This was a nice idea but I never sat down and made the time to do it. Love is in the air in the springtime too though, right? I think I'll add this one back in to my spring list.

11. Stay on track reading the Bible through the year. Check. Hubs and I started the Bible Recap reading program Jan 1st, and so far so good. There have been one or two misses which meant reading double duty a couple of days, but we don't let ourselves miss more than that. We're on track and it's been really good.

12. Bake the Southern Living cake of the month in Jan-Feb-March. I baked both the January and February cakes and have plans to make the March recipe this weekend-a Lemon Meringue cake. It looks to be a little more involved than the January/February recipes but I'm committed. Plus I have a houseful and somebody's gotta eat what I bake besides me.

In summary I completed 7.5/12 so just over 60%, which would be a failing grade if this were a test.

Except it's not, so I'm not mad about it. The first three months of the year have been uncharacteristically busy with many other to-do's that needed doing, and I wanted to roll with it. Here's to spring daydreams, fresh starts, and a brand new list-

Happy Spring!

Home Sweet Hodgepodge

Hi Peeps! Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. Spring has officially sprung (in the northern hemisphere anyway)...did she roll in more like a lion or more like a lamb in your neck of the woods? What needs more of your attention in terms of a good spring clean this year-your house or your garden/yard?

More like a lamb. A lamb who rolled around in the grass and is now completely covered in yellow pollen. Hubs took the blower to the grill deck this morning to get rid of some of the pollen and I snapped this picture just a few hours later...

The struggle is real y'all.

As far as what needs the most attention I'm going to say the house. Without question. Normally it's just the hubs and I living here, and hubs is neat as a pin so the house is almost always tidy and dusted. We've had our daughter, son-in-law, and their three littles living with us since mid-January so there's more 'stuff' out than there normally would be. We pick up regularly and embrace the chaos.

Mostly. Sometimes hubs looks around and twitches a little lol.

2. What's put a spring in your step lately?

We're very excited for the new home my daughter and her hubs are in the process of purchasing. I'm not saying too much about it now, because nothing in real estate is a done deal until the keys are handed over and of course the money too.  So far the process has been smooth, and everyone is eager to settle in.

3. When you were a kid, what was the best snack to find in your lunchbox? If you didn't do the lunchbox thing, tell us what was your favorite after school snack.

We walked home for lunch when I was in elementary school so no lunchboxes during those early years. My mom always had lunch waiting for us though, and I would be most excited to find she'd made egg salad sandwiches which are still one of my favorites.

I took lunch to school in a brown bag in junior high and sometimes high school, and my favorite treat to find there would be a Drake's Ring Ding. Does anyone remember those? Do they still make them? The cake-cream-icing proportion was exactly right.

And yes, they do still make them (I had to check). I wonder if they taste the same?

4. In what area of your life are you planting seeds?

I think if you're a parent you're always planting seeds, no matter your child's age. Grandparenting is also an opportunity to plant seeds and I hope I'm a good gardener. Kindness, fun, a gentle tone, time to spend, lots of prayer.

5. Why do you live where you do? Would you consider living somewhere else? Why or why not?

our lake lot pre-build, 2015

We live here on purpose. Some people end up retiring or living in the place they last worked, but our last work assignment was North Jersey, and we knew we needed to get away from the crazy taxes and the equally crazy winters.

clearing brambles from the newly purchased lot-2015

moving dirt, October 2015

We chose this lake and this lot specifically, and then retired and built our home here.

From the earliest days of our marriage we agreed that someday we'd live on a lake.

dock construction October 2015

dock in place-October, 2015...way before the house was completed

Hubs grew up on lakes and I'm all about a great view so we were totally simpatico in that department. My daughters both went to uni in the nearby town, which is how we discovered this little bit of paradise.

home sweet home

It used to be something of a well kept secret, but word's out now so it's busier than when we arrived in 2015. Still beautiful though!

Would I consider living somewhere else? I guess. I mean never say never. I imagine someday we'll move into something that requires less maintenance, but we'd probably stay nearby. Particularly now that we have a daughter and some of our grandchildren living in our same town. Our other daughter and grands are just a three hour drive from here, so this area makes sense.

Plus it's beautiful.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

There are four Hodgepodges (counting today) between now and Easter so I think I'll post some throwback pics in my random space every Wednesday between now and then.

Cheers to spring when little girls wore brand new coats that were a smidge too big or maybe just oversized on purpose? (hey, it was the 90's) and also completely precious...

Happy Wednesday and happy spring everyone!

Weekend Chatter

Good Monday morning. I hope you had a nice weekend...here's how ours looked-

I spent most of Friday getting food prepped for a Saturday brunch with my sister and niece. I made a sausage and egg casserole and a new recipe that jumped out at me when I was scrolling the endless black hole known as the internet-Orange Cream Cheese Loaf

I'd say it's more cake than bread, but it was light, fresh, and tasty. I squeezed the orange for the juice which I think gave it that extra brightness.

Did I take a picture of the loaf before I cut it?

No I did not. I was pretty slack in general in the photo department this weekend. I mean it was sunny and busy and I had family here and I don't always think about snapping a picture in the middle of living life.

Also,  I'm gonna go ahead and say here that I'm cooked out right now. We had an easy taco dinner Friday night because one of the grands had T-ball practice and tacos seemed like something we could make and eat beforehand. I also stated for the record on Friday that I would not be cooking dinner on Saturday or Sunday.

My sister and niece live a little over an hour from me but they hadn't had a chance to see Daughter1 and my son-in-law since they returned from their UK stint. Between the sickness and the travel and everyone's schedules and already full calendars it took a while to get a date on the calendar.

I invited them for brunch and hubs made his famous hand crafted Bloody Marys and the sun shone and the kids were sweet. Pretty much a perfect afternoon.

They stayed and visited for a while and we sat outside chatting and soaking up the sun.  After they left we watched basketball (Go VOLS!) and relaxed. There's a Korean restaurant in our tiny town that we hadn't tried yet, and who better to go to a Korean restaurant with than people who know and love the food?

My middle grandson will tell you mandu is his favorite food and they order their beef bulgogi like the dining pros they are which is super cute.

Hubs and I try to walk everyday in the neighborhood and I love the flowering trees whispering spring is here.

Spring finds a way, right?

Ans of course blooming things mean pollen and it's basically a cloud of yellow everywhere you turn, and we're not even to the worst of it yet. We press on.

The boys all went to watch the Clemson baseball game on Sunday afternoon and my daughter and I settled in to watch the Ruby Franke story on Hulu (Devil In The Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke). Have you seen this? I never followed her online but millions did.  Several million actually. What a sad, strange story of our times. What a nightmare these children experienced and continue to live with. It's only three episodes so not a huge investment of time.

The guys had great seats for the baseball game and were on TV every other minute which was fun to see. Hubs texted and asked us to try to take a picture and I had to tell him we changed the channel because we were deep into the Ruby saga.

The boys came in chattering (even the grown up boys) because it was probably the most exciting college baseball game ever with the hometown team pulling off a win at the last minute after being behind most of the game.

More importantly I kept my promise and didn't cook dinner. Daughter1 threw together some pasta with tomatoes, garlic, basil, and Parmesan cheese and we had a small bowl of that which was just right.

And that's the weekend in a nutshell. Or fourteen paragraphs. Whatever. It was nice and I hope yours was too!

Linking today like I do every Monday, with Holly and Sarah for their weekend recap blog hop. Feel free to join the party!

Weekend Ramblings

Good Monday morning. It's time for the weekly weekend recap, hosted every Monday by Holly (Pink Lady) and Sarah (Sunshine and Books)

Does anyone else need their phone to remember what they did two days ago?

We had a nice, low-key weekend here. On Friday hubs spent some time helping the boys with a little outdoor project. We may not have a fairy garden but we do have our own version of a GI Joe Navy Seal Training Facility lol.

There was even a hammock for Joe to get some r & r...

Friday night friends invited us to meet them at a local Italian place for dinner, and that's always fun. The 'kids' had gone to the college baseball game followed by pizza out, so all dinners were accounted for.

Saturday was an absolutely beautiful day. Beautiful!! Blue skies, springtime temps, a gentle breeze. We loaded up in two cars since we were bringing the pup, and headed to the woods.

We had a hike planned to a local waterfall which hubs and I both love, and it's one we thought the littles could manage without too much trouble. The hike in is all downhill, but there’s truth in the saying...what goes down must come up

Something like that?

To get to the falls you turn off the main road for a slow mile long trek down a gravel/dirt road before parking. Then you hike about a mile and a half through the woods to reach the falls and the pretty sandy beach beside them.

My daughter had little miss on her back in the carrier and the boys walked~scrambled~noticed things. The little brown dog ran ahead, but kept circling back to be sure hubs  his person was still right there.

The falls here are only 12-feet high, but! they're 100 feet wide and so so pretty. They were rushing too as we've had rain recently.

I read there was once a gristmill on the site, but now it's strictly a beautiful piece of nature with the falls dropping into a natural pool beside the beach, and then the river continuing on its way through the forest.

We had the beach mostly to ourselves. A couple of people hiked in and looked around, but for the most part it was just us. We got there on the early side and passed more people coming in as we were leaving. We'd packed a picnic lunch and the kids had a ball wading in the icy waters...

...getting their clothes only a teensy bit damp, skipping stones, and hunting for shiny rocks and arrowheads. Hubs is still on a mission to find one, but that didn't happen Saturday.

This guy who turns ten years old this week was living his best life romping through the woods, chasing sticks thrown into the river, and swimming to his heart's content.

We were home mid-afternoon and my daughter and her family changed clothes then loaded back up in the car for a ride over to their other grandparent's home for dinner. My son-in-law's dad was celebrating his birthday so a full fun day for them.  After they left I put together a little snack to take to the neighbor's house later in the evening-

A sweet and salty drizzled popcorn (you pour melted white chocolate over popped corn), which is so easy and so yummy.

Our neighbors invited us over to play cards with another couple, but first we all went out for Mexican food. We went to a nearby spot that started as a food truck, but has morphed into an 'almost' full fledged dining establishment.

After dinner we went back to the neighbors house and stayed up too late playing our favorite card game- Swoop. We weren't thinking about the time change. We do agree we all have spring fever here and are so ready for float parties, dock sitting, and watching the sunset from the back of the boat.

Sunday I turned the fireplace on for a while because it was gray and chilly. Not northern USA chilly, but SC chilly. Hubs and I slept in and then met the kids for brunch. They were up early of course (parents of young children rarely sleep in) so they made it to church first. I spent the afternoon finishing a book, hubs grilled steaks for everyone for dinner, and that was the weekend.

So what were you up to this weekend?
