Friday Frags

It's Friday, which means there must be some fragments lying around here somewhere. I'm linking up with Half Past Kissin' Time today...hop over there to read more frags or share your own.

My calendar is typically feast or famine, and this week it was feast.  I belong to two book clubs and this month they both met during the same week, one of which I hosted, so lots of reading and talking about reading.

We read The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova in one group, and Burned Alive by Souad, in the other.  Burned Alive is a hard read.  It's presented as a memoir, but after I finished the book I wanted to know more, and I discovered there is much debate about the truth of her account. Now I'm not sure how I feel about it...has anyone read this one? If so, I'd love to know what you thought.

We have a ginormous Viburnum hedge along the rock wall in our back yard.  It's in full bloom right now and is positively spectacular this year.

It was supposed to be trimmed way back earlier in the spring, but the person who was going to do the job never made it here, and I'm secretly glad.  Shhh...don't tell my hubs because the wild abandon with which these grow contradict his need for order in the great outdoors.

I say, look what we would have missed this year.

In other exciting news I bought cherries this week.  Not just any cherries either-

...golden cherries.  I've always heard them called Mt. Rainier cherries, but our market labeled these as golden.  I'm pretty sure they're one in the same, and they are so sweet!

I'm looking forward to a long weekend with the hubs. He's taken today off as well and we have lots of fun things planned including time with family, a crawfish boil, and plenty of back porch sittin'.

As we welcome the added day to our weekend, let's not forget the why.  May God bless the families of those who've given all in service to their country.

  1. I'm ashamed to say I've never tried Golden/Mt Rainier cherries. I've always heard them called as Mt Rainier too. And WOW, that hedge is beautiful! I used to belong to a book club that kind of dissolved and I miss it. Enjoy all your activities you have planned for the weekend!

  2. Never heard of or seen those cherries. I'll have to check them out. The flowers are beautiful. Our lilacs are in full bloom right now and smell wonderful. But our bushes are way overgrown. We will definitely have to trim them way back this year.

  5. I'd forgotten all about the Mt. Rainier cherries! I miss them (and fresh blackberries) - can't wait to get moved back to Washington State so I can indulge again! :)

Your hedge looks amazing even without having been trimmed - I'm with you, you would have missed out on all the glory had the trimming guy shown up. ;)

Reading and talking is always a fun way to spend a week! :)

  6. Now I'm hungry for crawfish.

I always trim my flowering shrubs right after they're done blooming so I don't miss anything.

They have given me a break today but I will be back in force tomorrow. I love it all but I am tired. You have me interested in that book now. Enjoy your weekend.

  14. The hedge is so lovely. I wish I had more time and money to devote to landscaping. Also, I wish I knew how to landscape. That would also be ideal. Are you doing anything special with the cherries?
