It's A Grand Old Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! If you've answered this week's questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger linking before you. Here we go-
1. The Hodgepodge lands on June 14th this week, Flag Day in the US of A. Do you fly your country's flag at home? Sometimes, often, or every single day? Have you ever visited the city of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia)? Did you make a point of seeing The Betsy Ross House? Have you ever made a trip to Baltimore? If so, was Fort McHenry on your itinerary? (where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write The Star Spangled Banner)

Normally we do fly a flag, but we haven't put a pole or any other sort of holder out in the new house yet. On our to-do list.

Along with 101 other things.

As far as those two cities go, I've lived near both a fair chunk of my life. I've been to the Betsy Ross House on more than one occasion, but in all the years we lived near Baltimore I never visited Ft. McHenry. The Betsy Ross House is pretty touristy, and I think most historians question the validity of Miss Ross actually stitching up the flag right there. Still, Philly is full of wonderful history and a great place to visit.

2. Red flag or white flag? Which have you encountered most recently? Explain.

Probably a white flag. We've had a lot going on here of late, and I've had to adjust my expectations in terms of how this summer might look. I wrote about it here, if you are curious.

3. Are you a stay in the car listen to the end of a song kind of person? What kind of person is that?

Absolutely. Hubs and I both are. We've been known to pull into our garage and sit there through more than one or four songs if they keep playing ones we love.

What kind of person is that? I think a sentimental person, a person for whom music and memory are linked in a way that's hard to define. In the words of Eric Church...'funny how a melody, sounds like a memory...' In fact let's just go ahead and play the whole thing, because he's captured it-

If you don't get what this song has to do with this question, then you're probably not someone who sits in the car and listens to the end of a song.

4. What are some of the traits or qualities you think a good dad possesses? In other words, what makes a good dad? What's an expression you associate with your father?

I don't think there's any such thing as a perfect dad, and I also think love covers a multitude of imperfections when it comes to parenting. I felt like that needed saying before I answered the question.

I think a good dad is a man of integrity, a man who sets a good example for his family in all areas of life (no pressure-ha!), he provides for the physical needs of his children and loves sacrificially. He's available to his children, makes them a priority, and encourages them in their giftings and endeavours. He extends grace and mercy in abundance, and treats his children's mother with the utmost kindness and respect always.

A good dad recognizes he has been given an awesome responsibility and asks God regularly for wisdom and guidance. He teaches his children to do the same.

As far as expressions go there are several. There was something my dad used to yell when it was time to come to the table, and I think it was in Japanese. I tried to find the phrase by searching phonetically but no luck. We thought it was hilarious.

Another expression would be, 'You look like a hoot owl in a bush.' If you came to breakfast with bed head you could expect to hear this one. I used to say it to my girls and somehow they morphed it into 'You look like a hootie in the woodie' so that's how we've always said it in our house. Still makes me think of my dad.

5. What's one rule you always disagreed with while growing up? Is that rule somehow still part of your adult life? Is that a good or bad thing?

Eat all your vegetables?

I love vegetables now, so nobody ever has to tell me to about vegetables or anything else , "...just eat two more bites, and then you can be done...'

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Have you ever posted anything on Facebook Live? Are you on Instagram (I'm at Daleyshots) ? Do you use the Instagram story feature? Tell me one of your favorites to follow there.

  1. When I was growing up, we ate everything on our plates, no questions asked. We never felt the desire to find out what would happen if we did not. However, my sister did not want to eat eggs. Every morning she would avoid the eggs and every morning the belt would come out. She still does not eat them, as far as I know.

  2. I love that hoot owl phrase and the morphing of it, too.

I'm on Instagram, too. celticmama36. I have seen the story thing, but I don't know what it's all about. Please explain it to me. :) While I can't choose an absolute favorite, one of my favorite Instagram feeds is here: Peg.

I hope that all is well with your girls and that grandbaby. :)

    Have a blessed day.

  5. Oh Joyce, I think i need to backup and try again after seeing your answers. Reading with understanding lately is slipping. Now my dad had so many expressions (not all of them fit for print without serious editing) that I really should return to that response and give it due justice. I like how your girls switched your dad's expression around...cute!

  7. I especially like the part about what a good dad is, Joyce. I agree. I'm on Instagram @cranberrymorning but I've never used the story feature. I once posted a tiny video of white sheets drying on the line and you wouldn't believe the number of likes that got. Who would think???!! I like @catesthisandthat and several others whose photos stay with me but whose name escapes me right now. One is from Utah and posts amazing photos of the red rock area.

  8. I loved how different our answers were on #3, so funny how we all interpret these questions. That's what makes the HP so much fun. Thanks for always showing up for us each Wed. Hope things are going well with all that you are dealing with at this time.

  13. I love your answer for #4 and the traits/qualities of a father. I often listen to my favorite CD's in the car so I hear the songs often so I do not sit and wait but I know I have done that in the past. Yes it was always about the veggies for me but now that seems to big the biggest part of what I eat these days. I have not and most likely won't do anything live on Facebook. I usually post photos on Instagram when I'm traveling. I often forget about it in my daily life.

  15. Since I bombed on question #3 I appreciate your answer. We are a household that sometimes carry on conversations with song lyrics. It's always fun to come read the answers the question giver gave. Happy Flag day to you! :)

  16. Loved today's HP Joyce. I was so blessed with a great dad, but he was not perfect (nor am I!!). I enjoyed the song!! I don't post live on FB and though I do have an Instagram account, I rarely go there. Just don't think about it.

  17. I love the hoot owl expression and the way it was used in your little family. The memories you speak of your family are always a delight as it seems you had such a fun and loving family. Your answers are good about dads. I have not Instagram and I don't really care for Facebook Live.

  19. My DIL grew up in Philly, so she's always talking about it. They go visit her grandparents and cousins there every few years.

My favorites to follow on Instagram are from NYC, a place I love.

  20. I haven't posted anything on Facebook Live. That scares me, for some reason. I do use the story feature on Instagram, but it's different because you can look at your video before you set it to post. Love following you on IG. Your pictures are always gorgeous!

  21. From what I've read lately, they are questioning the validity of the Betsy Ross story in totality. It seems they think she probably sewed a flag (along with tons of other people) but probably not THE flag.

  22. I enjoyed your answers. I have never posted live on facebook but I just might in the right situation. I am on instagram but have not done the "story". Another enjoyable Hodgepodge...thank you!

  23. I did a live post on FB once. It lasted about 5-10 seconds. I just invited everyone to church one Sunday morning. I'm on Instagram but I know nothing about the story feature.

  26. I'm given to understand that South Carolina is very hot & humid. So, isin't expecting the muggies to leave somewhat unrealistic? Fortunately for us the heat wave has subsided taking the humidity with it.
I'm one of those people who associate music with different periods of life. Music often evokes memories related to the time that the song was ppular. I loved your answer on the Dad question. Thanks for another challenging Hodgepodge.

  27. Loved your answers, Joyce! Your description of what makes a great dad was wonderful. Mine was many of those things. The hoot owl saying and its translation ... both fun!

Thanks for hosting and coming up with these questions. You're amazing!
