It's Hodgepodge Time

Welcome to this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge, our final HP in the month of November. Not December. Next week we're in to December but let's not hurry, k? If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then hop over and leave a comment for your neighbor there. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond
1. Does anybody really know what day it is? Last week we skipped the Hodgepodge and I just assumed this week would find us in December, but nope. Still November. Do you wear a watch? Use a paper calendar or strictly electronic? What's your favorite hour of the day? Why?

I'm really off track with what day it is because whenever we're traveling on a Monday it feels like I'm a day behind at home. Do I wear a watch? Not anymore. I had a watch for many years that I absolutely loved. It was a gift from hubs decades ago and I had it tuned up/repaired a couple of times through the maker (Raymond Weil), but there was no more fixing. I thought I'd get another watch, but haven't so far. I use my phone, but I do miss my watch. Hubs wants to get me an Apple Watch but I'm not sure. My watch was jewelry and I'm just not sure I want to 'wear' a device.

I use a paper calendar, because I love paper. I love stationery and beautiful fonts and pretty papers and colorful pens, and while I do keep appointments on my phone calendar I operate mostly from my 'day timer'. It's not a Day-Timer product, the one I like best is put out by Our Daily Bread, but it's the size I like, it's spiral bound, and it has both week and month at a glance.

My favorite hour of the day is the first one.

2. Tell us something about how you celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday.

I'm planning to dedicate a whole post to recapping Thanksgiving, so for now I'll just share how the day began-

With these apple cider donuts my daughter made from scratch. Yum!

3. What's a sound you hate to hear?

Loud chewing.

4. Where do you not mind waiting?

Honestly now that we all walk around with hand held computers waiting isn't quite the annoyance it once was. I don't mind waiting at home. If we're not ready to go I can find something to do.

5. I really wish____________________________________.

hmm...many things...do I go deep or stay on the surface....

I really wish I had a beach trip on my calendar.

Surface it is.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We had friends over for dinner recently and I made an Angel Pie for dessert. I don't know if that's the official name, but that's what it's always been called in our house. It's been a long time since I've baked one of these and I'd forgotten how completely scrumptious the taste. Our version of Angel Pie has a meringue crust-

...filled with a delicate vanilla cream-

...topped with fresh whipped cream and shaved German chocolate-

This pie doesn't travel well, so it's best to make and serve in your own home. It looks like it weighs a thousand pounds, but y'all it is so light and so delicious.

  1. Good answer for the favorite hour! I love that short time I have to myself. I have 2 "roommates" so it's nice to have that time. Those doughnuts look fabulous!

  4. That pie looks fantastic! And I agree that no matter what time it is, I do think my fave hour is the first one I am up. And actually, if we are being honest, the little bit before I wake up but I am starting to become aware. I am always so happy then.

  5. I was nodding my head thinking I feel the same way especially about paper and loud chewing. :) I still have my Seiko watch and the amount of paper around me is hilarious. We are traveling to the Seattle suburbs today and then on to Abbotsford on Thursday for a couple nights to celebrate with the Mennonite Girls (Christmas). Then back to our oldest sons home to celebrate our DIL's birthday and then home over the very snowy passes. TMI? That's why I'm not participating today. Happy soon to be December to you and yours. That pie looks yummy!

  7. I agree, I don't want to wear a device. I am so used to looking at my wrist. I'd have to open my purse and look at my phone to see what time it is. I'm pleased to hear that you use a calendar. I am so impressed with those donuts. True, we do have our phones to look at while waiting for an appointment. A beach trip does sound wonderful. Your pie looks delicious. Thank you for your sweet comment.

  8. If your Thanksgiving started with those delectable doughnuts and possibly ended with the Angel Pie, all shared with your amazing family, then what day could have been better. Looking forward to reading more about it.

  9. The angel pie looks so good! We have family recipe for one, but it has an orange flavor filling. I think I'd like vanilla much better! The apple cider donuts look delicious too! I tried wearing an apple watch but went back to my old Seiko. I just didn't need all that technology on my wrist when I usually have my phone handy. I'm going to check out the planner...sounds like the perfect size.

  11. I'm a paper person too and stopped wearing a watch when I could not longer find the proper batteries for my old gold watch (it too was more like jewelry than a watch). I have never heard of that type of pie before but it does look delicious and nice and light too.

  12. Hello there, hope all is going well over in your part of the world, here are my answers to these hodgepodge questions.

It is Wednesday as I type this but I keep thinking it is Monday, nope I don't wear a watch only because I can't get anyone to replace the batteries in the ones I have.

My favourite hour of the day is the first hour after I get up of a morning.

    I'm Aussie so no Thanksgiving

I hate the sound of a whistle being blown

I can wait anywhere as long as I have something to read or my phone to occupy my time.

I really wish there was no wars

In all ranks of life the human heart
    yearns for beautiful;
all the beautiful thing that God makes
are his gift to all alike.

  14. Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge!! That pie looks delicious! Did you link the recipe or is a secret? I tried to find a link... (hint). I always enjoy your answers. Those donuts look delicious, too!!

  15. Oh, I could seriously do a deep dive into that pie!
I, too, love pretty paper and writing instruments. Unfortunately, because I'm a 'leftie' my writing's prone to smear. Don't even get me started on those left-side spirals. (oh vey!)

  16. I have a Swatch which is watch but jewelry at the same time and it is waterproofed. I baked once an apple pie and during night my cat ate it ! The kitchen was full of crumbs ! I preferred cooking. Now I prefer eating !

  17. My family kept telling me to get an apple watch. I've resisted and just have a fit bit to track my steps. Oh my those donuts look amazing!!! That pie looks really good too.

  18. I don't have any interest in wearing a device either. The donuts and the angel pie look delicious! I've never heard of angel pie before, but it looks like something I would love! Happy December!

  19. Your pie looks delicious and it may not be heavy but I bet it's full of calories lol. I'd be lost without a watch well my Fitbit. I also like a paper calendar but I do use my phone as well.
