It's Hodgepodge Day! Bienvenue!

Bonjour mes amis! Welcome to the games of the five hundred and sixty first Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Or after you. Or all the bloggers on the list.

On your mark, get set, go...

From this Side of the Pond

1. The Olympics kick off this coming weekend. Will you be watching? If you could watch just one event in person, which one would you choose?

We'll definitely be watching. I always enjoy the Olympics.

If I could only see one event in person I guess it would be swimming. I've always loved the gymnastics but we know more now about what goes on behind the scenes as well as the toll the sport takes on the body, so it's less appealing to me than it once was.

2. Have you ever been to Paris? Is this a city you'd like to visit? What's your favorite 'French thing'?

Ah, Paris. I love it. I've been a few times as it was an easy train ride from the UK. I cannot imagine the traffic with the Olympics on tap, but I wouldn't say no to a trip.

My favorite French thing? Impossible to choose just one. France is a beautiful country and while I love Paris I love the small villages and countryside more.

I also love the language, the food, the wine, the champagne...

... the architecture, the cheese, the bread, the Alps...

3. Macaron, creme brulee, chocolate souflee, mille feuille, or an eclair...your favorite French patisserie from the ones listed?

Yes please.

Okay, if I must choose-Creme brulee is my favorite dessert, but I do love all of the above. Europeans know how to do afternoon coffee and cake.

4. July 24th is National Cousins Day...do you have many cousins? Are you close to them? Will you see any of your cousins on July 24th?

I have a lot of cousins, but have never lived geographically near them, and most of my cousins are older than me. One of my dad's brothers had two sons nearer the age of my younger sister and I, and we did see them from time to time, as they were at least on the east coast. My parents grew up in Colorado and New Mexico so most of my cousins lived on that side of the country, and people didn't travel the way they do now.

This was taken on my grandparents Colorado farm. My grandpa is the one who looks like a farmer and I'm standing beside him with my brother, younger sister, and two of my cousins. My uncle is the one with his shirt unbuttoned. It was summer so I guess maybe he was warm?

Whenever we visited grandparents we spent time with our cousins too. It wasn't often, but I liked knowing I was part of a big extended family and still appreciate that today. Thanks to Facebook I've reconnected with some of them there. It's been fun to see their growing families and share a little bit of our lives that way.

5.  Last time you went somewhere that felt like 'everyone and his cousin' was there?

Hmm...I pretty much try to avoid huge crowds these days. How about my dock on the 4th of July lol! If you don't know what I'm talking about I mentioned it here-A Post Holiday Hello Monday

We'll be at the Atlanta airport this week and I can pretty much guarantee there will be a crowd.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I've recently added a follow me by email option on my sidebar. If you'd like to be notified via email of new posts here, just put your address in the box and click subscribe.

Also, I'm wondering how you respond to comments on your blog? Do you reply to the commenter by email or do you reply to them right under their comment on your own blog? If you ask a question in the comments section do you go back to the blog to see if it's been answered?

If I respond to a commenter under their comment I'm not sure the person will be notified or will come back and see my answer.  Email replies feel more reliable, and I usually end up doing both.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

  1. I forgot to do hodgepodge this week but I agree with all of your answers! Did you know break dancing is a new Olympic sport this year? I hope to catch that!
I use Wordpress so it makes it easy to simply reply on the website by clicking on their comment. Some probably get an email that I have responded and some maybe don't want the email? I'm not sure. I really love Wordpress. I do have the upgraded that is $300 a year but since my hub has a very expensive hobby of road biking with lots of gear, I feel like $300 for all the joy I have gotten is pretty good.

  2. Great pictures of Paris and France! I could look at photos of beautiful places in Europe all day :). I have never lived close to any of my cousins either. Unfortunately, it has been the same with my kids and their cousins. As for your comments questions, I am not sure if my answers will be helpful since I use Blogger and you don´t. On Blogger, the only way to respond (at least that I am aware of), is by selecting reply and writing a response right on the blog page. If I ask a question in a comment, I usually do go back and see if there´s been a response. Sometimes though, it slips my mind to go back and see if the question has been answered. Thanks for the HP questions and linkup!

    1. Thanks for answering my comment question, and hopefully you see this : ) I use Blogger as well. If a person commenting has an email address available for contact I do that. Sometimes I can't find an email address. As far as cousins go...I Iove that my own kids will be near enough one another for their children to know each other. They are all so close in age that they can be great friends.

  3. I love watching the diving and the synchronized swimming! I love most things French too but I much preferred the countryside to the city of Paris also but I think that's the country girl in me. I do LOVE the Eiffel Tower though and have had Eiffel Tower lamps, photos, ornaments, etc. I love the croissants, the French baguettes, macarons, mille feuille.. but not eclairs. I don't like the filling.

  4. 1. I love all of your photos! 2. I'm excited and signed up to be emailed about your new posts! 3. I asked the same question several years ago about the email vs. comments. Several told me it was correct protocol to respond to the comment right under their comment, so that is what I try to do. I personally prefer an email if I've asked a question. I'm interested to see how folks answer your question!

  5. Loved seeing your France photos and the cousin photo with little you! I go back and forth on the responding to every comment on my blog. I do not go back to see if someone has responded to me unless I leave a question. Sometimes it seems like a comment needs an response and sometime it doesn't. Oye. There was a time when comments/commenters had their blog linked to their name and a simple click took me back to their blog but now it seems I have to search a little harder to get back to their blog. My blogroll on my sidebar disappeared one day and for the life of me I can't get it to reappear!! Wordpress has some upgrades that mess with my brain. I do not expect a reply to every comment I leave unless maybe I have a pressing question.

  6. Traveling to Europe is on my bucket list. Hopefully one day soon. Be careful in Atlanta....and yes, it will be definitely crowded.

  7. Swimming is a fave for me to watch too. On my blog I use disqus for comments and the person should get a notification when I reply on the blog.

  8. I comment back through theirs and hope they see it; lol. And yes, I thought Paris was lovely but the countryside even prettier. We took a train out to Versailles and that was really nice.

  9. Yah, I guess that is true about gymnastics. I think it's still one of my favorites. I am not a fan of crowds either. "How many people are going to be there?'" Let's just stay home. Haha!

  10. I am not big on crowds either and couldn't imagine that amount of people in Paris right now.

  11. Great Olympic Hodgepodge! I can't wait to have Paris photos of my own. Counting down the days.

  12. Love you words and pictures about Paris. That's a sweet photo with your grandpa, siblings and cousins. Yes, the airports are always crowded. Have a safe trip. I respond to my comments through the emails I get but there are several people who are no-reply and I've never been able to reply back to them. Enjoy your day!

  13. Hi Joyce, I enjoyed your pictures of France. I like that picture of you and your family. I usually go back to the person's site and comment there. Sometimes I will email them if it is a personal issue. I used to like to go to concerts, but not so much because of the crowds. I do like Disneyland and will go there because you are always on the move. I plan to stay home as much as I can to watch the Olympics.

  14. As my readers may have noticed, I don't usually reply to the comments on my blog but I do make every effort to visit their blogs (if they have one) and leave a comment on what they have said.

  15. I like to reply to questions by email. I will sign up for your updates. I used to do "Feedly" but don't keep up with that anymore. Fun hodgepodge questions!

  16. Great photos, great answers, I wouldn't want to see any event in person as I don't handle crowds well. Here are my hodgepodge answers
The Olympics kick off this coming weekend. Will you be watching? If you could watch just one event in person, which one would you choose?

In life we have pain all we can do is try and relive it and carry on the best we can.

  17. Enjoyed your post! Nice photos!
I try to return comments on my blog. I often wonder if they ever get it.
Soon I’ll be on Wordpress and have no idea about the comments. I hope it’s not as complicated as setting up the blog.
I’m so upset with Blogger for totally messing up my blog. Be sure to backup your blog monthly. It’s been a trying month with losing so much content.

  18. Some bloggers are so good about commenting on comments but I'm terrible about that! And if I do make a comment, I wonder if that person goes back to check if their question was answered. I do take note of the number of comments on specific posts and revisit if it looks like I had a late commenter. I always enjoy your answers on Hodgepodge day and appreciate this weekly fun. I really enjoy the DIY shows about Brits who buy a chateau in France and renovate it. The countryside would be more enjoyable for me than one of the big cities/Paris. Thank you again for the weekly Hodgepodge!!

  19. Gymnastics is still my favorite at the Summer Games, but it does bother me so much to realize the ugliness that's often hidden behind the scenes and the smiles. :-( Love your photos from France, and oh how I would love to see it myself! On my blog, I reply to commenters and I'm pretty consistent about that. On other blogs, I may check back to read other comments or replies, but I don't often make a point of it, unless I asked a question or I'm really intent on following up. On some blogs, I get the email when there's a reply and I do like having that as an option to subscribe to replies.

  20. I respond through email to my commentors as I don't know that anyone goes back to check for a reply under their comments. I loved that you shared with me what Tozer said. He was always a favorite of my Dad when he was in the ministry. Good luck at the Atlanta airport, hoping all the qlitches have been worked out.

  21. Fun Hodgepodge this week, Joyce. I usually respond to most every comment under their comments. If I ask a question on someone else's blog, I try to remember to go back and check for the answer. If I'm asked a question, I will try to answer by email and in the comments.
