Whatcha Reading?

I read a lot and I like to keep a file of book titles on my computer so I don't have to rely on my hormonal brain to recall title and author when I'm ready for something new. I don't know about you but I can never remember those pesky little details when I get to the library or bookstore.

I have a long summer reading list which makes me very happy. Reading is never a waste of time and I'm looking forward to lying in one of our comfy cruiser chairs on the new patio with a good book and a glass of sweet iced tea. Sometimes a good book read on the patio in the summer sun will lead to a nap.

fyi-napping is also never a waste of time.

My hubs makes fun of me for calling the lounge chairs cruisers. I think the correct term is steamer but it's one of those words I've somehow mis-learned in the too crowded brain so cruiser it shall remain.

My reading list is always a very mixed bag. Mysteries are probably my favorite but I also like to read non-fiction, biographies, award winners and will throw in a little fluff too. I usually have at least one classic re-read on my know, those books read in long ago high school English classes that take on new meaning when they're re-read after life has been lived a little?

So, here's a peek at thirteen books on my list right now...there might be more but I'm linking with Thursday Thirteen and I like to follow the rules. I had trouble with the code posting so I've linked the old fashioned way today. Here ya go-

1. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

3. A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

4. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

5. Parrot and Oliver in America by Peter Carey

6. Beginners Greek by James Collins

7. Making a Literary Life by Carolyn See

8. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

9. Son of Hamas by Mosab Hussan Yousaf and Ron Bracken

10. The Hating Game by Tali Roland

12. The Beach House by Jane Green

13. The Fifth Witnesss by Michael Connelly

What are you reading this summer?

  1. Great list! Thanks for playing.

My list this summer? So far, a bunch of Living Simple magazines I haven't read yet and Steven Tyler's autobiography LOL!

  2. I am currently reading "The Bronze Horeseman." I really liked reading "Gone with the Wind" and "These is My Words" last year.

  3. I haven't read any of these. I feel so left out! ;)

    Happy TT!

  4. Add the Goodbye Quilt to your list! I am going to blog about it next week. A MUST read for you!

  5. The only one of those I've read is Pride and Prejudice- loved it! I'm reading Stieg Larsson's trilogy right now.

Don't forget to stop by my blog-I've tagged you!

  6. Sitting in the cruiser, reading and sipping iced tea sounds wonderful.

I'm currently reading "Two Kisses For Maddie" written by a fellow blogger,Matt Logelin, who lost his wife, Liz, just 24 hours after childbirth. I read his blog long before we wrote his book.

    Happy reading!!!

  7. I generally read whatever is available at the library. I'm too cheap to buy a book that will take me four hours to read. :)

I haven't read any of those but #8. Let us know if you end up with any real winners.

  8. I don't have a list I just read books as I come across them at the library or suggested by others. But in the last couple of weeks I have read the one by Marybeth Chapman, Angie Smith, and Pioneer Woman.

  9. Wow Joyce,

I haven't thought that far ahead. I just read a devotional called "Fit For My King" by Sherri Rose Shepherd. I lost 5 pounds in the past month and have changed my eating habits. It was a book well worth it for me. I plan on reading "Heaven is for Real" next, but I tend to like the fluff that Karen Kingsbury writes. I have been addicted to one of her series that kept leading to more series'. They're all about the Baxter family and now the Flanigans. Maybe I'll look into some of yours. :)

  10. Joyce,

I usually pick up books as they interest me, but I have these on the way from Amazon:

    * The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
    * Every Last One by Anna Quindlen
    * Get Out of that Pit by Beth Moore
    * Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos

I've also been trying to keep better track of what I read in a year (because I LOVE IT) and I've read something like 24 books. I'm hoping to double that during the summer, because that's when I get to do all of my "real" reading given that I'm not grading. I have the Bonhoeffer book and fully intend to pick it up and finish it this summer. We'll have to compare notes :) I really enjoyed what I read so far, but put it down because it was too dense for the school year.

  11. I keep meaning to make a list of what I've read this year, but so far I haven't got that done. I'm currently reading a book called "Delivered with Love" by Sherry Kyle which is a christian romance. I'm also reading "Craving Grace" by Lisa Velthouse. I see you had "Pride and Prejudice" on your list. I've never read that, but I have it on my Kindle now and hope to read it sometime this year.

There's just nothing better than getting to relax and read a book, except like you say maybe taking a nap while your reading that said book. :)

  12. I use to read all the time...before blogging! Now it's a book or so a sad! I promised myself that I would read a lot this summer sitting on my back porch sipping sparkling water. Your list is full I've only read Pride and Prejudice and loved it. Need to make a list!

  13. I am a terrible reader. That is one of the things I am going to make room for this summer by getting off the computer more often. I love books and buy them all the time. I have a lovely collection of unread books. I haven't heard of the ones on your list. Well I have heard of Pride and Prejudice! I will have to check out your list.

  14. I've enjoyed a few of those myself. Great list1

    Enjoy your Thursday!

  15. I´ve read "Unbroken" on my Kindle. Bought it at Amazon and loved it. It is an amazing story of survival and never a boring moment. My kind of book!

  16. Interesting list, Joyce. I'm currently reading Dracula after reading Frankenstein. Can you believe that I've never read these classics? My summer reading list will be defined by whatever books I decide to have my five classes read next school year. I also feel the need to read Jane Austen. I went all the way through high school without reading one of her books, if you can believe that. I'd also like to catch up on some James Patterson. Crime novels are my favorite to read.

  17. I loved Pride and Prejudice, and not just any random selection from the movies. The book is great.

  18. Haven't read any of these but have seen at least one as a movie. I am just finishing "Stroke of Insight" by Jill Bolte Taylor. Excellent.

  19. Wow! That's an impressive list!

I don't plan ahead so I will be reading whatever strikes my fancy at any given moment. Currently I am reading A Death in Holy Orders by P. D. James.

    Happy reading!

  20. What an interesting list. And a good idea regarding the list on your computer ... I hear/read so many recommendations and want to try them all ... but I end up forgetting when I go to the library or the book store.

I've got several books lined up for summer: Water for Elephants, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, a travel book about the Outer Banks (we're going to go ... had talked about going this year, but we just can't pass up Hilton Head Island!), a couple of Low Country tales by Dorothea Benton Frank, and The Help.

    Have a blessed weekend.

  21. Oh, yay! I'm on the list! I'm on the list! Woooo!

    Thanks so much! :)

  22. And, I'm sure you have read The Help. Of course, being a Southern that one takes on a special meaning that it likely doesn't for you. But, you might enjoy it anyway. :o) I'm about to read "Water for Elephants." Can you tell that I'm not into "heavy" reading. :o) Happy Memorial Day weekend!

  23. Hmmm .Guess my comment didn't publish. I was saying I am in the middle of The Hiding Place. Before that, a great historical novel called Island of Saints. It was so good I'm wanting to read another book by Andy Andrews. It's The Traveler's Gift.

BTW I have nominated you for an award on my blog.
