If I Only had a Brain...

I wouldn't have left hubs at home for the big move this weekend. At some point on Friday Daughter2 and I had a conversation that concluded with this thought-'If I were rich I'd never move anything again. I'd just leave it all in the old place and buy new'. This may have been said as I was wringing out my shirt after we attempted to jointly lug bin number 50 down the stairs. Or possibly it was muttered after we'd been forced to rearrange the furniture for the third time. I blame the heat for the fact that we neglected to note the location of the cable and computer outlet before we wrestled the ginormous dresser containing the TV onto the wall on the opposite side of the room from said outlets. The idea of chucking everything you own and buying new may sound ridiculous but when you are carrying bins, heavy bins I might add, bins full of books and shoes and boots and 227 hair products, and its approximately 1000 degrees and there are steps (of course) and the heat index is 1010 and the humidity is 1000% well, you'd think the same. What was I thinking leaving hubs at home?

At one point I texted him to say I thought I might actually be melting. Remember what happened to the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy threw water on her? Like that. Hubs texted me back to say he'd just had a nap. Grrrr. In his defense he had been in Brazil all week but still, we could have used his muscles and his head for geometry. Had he been there I'm pretty sure we would have gotten the furniture right on the first try. Plus, he would have been the one doing the schlepping.

Daughter2 is settled into her new apartment and her bedroom is organized, tidy, and cozy. fyi-pretty much all university housing is 'cozy'. She wraps up her summer job tomorrow and on Wednesday will be introduced to her assigned teacher at the school where she'll student teach this year. She can't wait to get started. And hey, we're done with the moving so whoohoo! Well til May anyway, but right now May is waiting happily somewhere over the rainbow.

  1. This is giving me a lesson for next week when I move my daughter into a dorm for the first time. It will be that hot here and I have no idea how far away we have to park. And my husband has to go to a work orientation so it will be just daughter and I.

  2. Daughter #2 needs a boyfriend. Preferably one big enough to move large objects and in love enough to do it when it's 100 degrees out.

  3. Looks so cute! I'm jealous you got to see sister (not jealous about the schlepping in 1000 degree heat). Love you, miss you!

  4. Oh sigh, I remember all the moving to and fro during my university days, and my poor mum was always roped in to help me! Her bedroom looks uber-tidy for someone who's just moved!

  5. Mindee-Daughter2 has a boyfriend...he was not in town. She had an early move in since she has to be in the public schools for student teaching so not many extra hands around town yet.

Tracy-good luck! Really. It is emotional on top of the phyiscal labor. It does help make you ready to leave them there though : )

  6. Whoa...didn't know you were planning to leave your muscles at home when I prayed for your trip! Glad you lived through it! It IS hard not to grumble when they get back all jet-lagged and you NEED them for something. I need to work on that whole "love, understanding, compassion" thing..hahaha!

  9. Joyce, I couldn't help but think of you and daughter2 trying to move this past weekend-- when the weather was so hot. We're only one state over from SC, and our weather was AWFULLY HOT!

Glad to hear that y'all got her settled in, and ready to do her student teaching. How exciting!

  11. Deanie is moving to a new apartment in DC in a few weeks. Maybe it's a good thing that she lives so far away. She is seriously considering a moving company this time.

The real reason we're still in the house we raised the lovelies? I am NOT interested in packing up 27 years of 6 people's crap and moving it anywhere!

Glad y'all got it all done even with the heat! She looks quite happy!

  13. I moved my daughter in last week...it was 150+ degrees outside and we had to haul everything down a hill....do you ever feel like we are moving the same old stuff year after year??? I feel like I've coordinated around that comforter so long that we are related....Furman is next week.....gotta get the tissues ready!!

  14. We moved our daughter into her apartment in May (thank heaven - it wasn't nearly so hot then.) She is forbidden to move again until she has a wedding ring or a college diploma. :)

  18. I agree about the leaving everything behind and just buying new when moving. ;-) It sure would be nice to be able to do that, wouldn't it?!?!

Glad you guys got through it in spite of the 1000 degree temperatures and 1010 degree heat index. Good thing the next move is not until next May. Surely it won't be 1000 degrees in May?

  19. I agree, moving is the WORST! I'd rather be in Brazil. Heck, I'd even go to Mexico...maybe...certain parts at least.

    Glad it's over!

  20. Joyce, you hold the prize for the most moves! You should be a pro at this by now. What a hot time to be moving too. Oh well, it looks like she is all settled in. I hope she has a wonderful semester student teaching. She will do a great job!! Love & blessings from NC!

  22. I can't fathom moving in the heat & humidity! When we moved to Tn., we sold a lot of our furniture since we were moving ourselves!

  23. I could never have done that. Way to go, you did it!!! I'm exhausted just reading about it.
