Actually, the hail looked a little bit like snow which helped me remember why I love the summer.
Have we exhausted the subject of weather in blog posts and status updates yet?
Since it's too hot to think very hard I'm going with a list today and linking it with Thursday Thirteen. For your reading pleasure....the sounds of summer when I was a kid~
1. The Good Humor ice cream truck
2. the song of the whippoorwill
3. the sprinkler on a hot summer day
4. the sound of a shoe 'kicking the can'
5. a needle hitting a record
6. the warm summer wind in my ear as I rode my bike down a hill
7. lawnmowers on Saturday morning
8. a pool splash
9. FREEZE!
10. a jump rope hitting the pavement
11. the creak of a swing set chain
12. the ringing of a telephone
13. olly olly oxen free!
What are the sounds of your childhood summers?
What a fun post to read! I find it difficult to believe that you're old enough to remember a needle hitting a record, (and you can pay me later). :-) Now that I read your list, it takes me back to all the wonderful things I loved about summer. One sound I remember is the milker pump. At milking time, it was a sound you could hear from anywhere in the yard, and in the house, for we had screen doors. Now we have closed doors and AC.
ReplyDeleteThe creak of the swing really stands out in my mind. Our splashes were all in the ocean or bay. I might add bicycle tires spinning fast on pavement.
ReplyDeleteIf we got rain here, I do believe I'd be out doing a happy dance, even if it meant dancing in the hail! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love that list of the sounds of summer. The only thing I'd add is the sound of a wooden screen door slamming shut. ;-)
Oh, I remember the sound of the ice cream truck. Cool post.

The ocean lapping against the shore, and kids giggling and laughing playing in the ocean!
ReplyDeleteI still love hearing the music of an ice cream truck in the neighborhood. I also love remembering the sound of a screen door opening and closing.
ReplyDeleteThis is really evocative. Mine were not that different, really.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom calling us to supper!
ReplyDeleteThe sounds of crickets at night as we chased lightning bugs.
What a great post. All of the above I remember, including the needle on the record.
The warm summer wind as I ride my bike is also one of my favorite sounds. My mom opening the front door of our apartment to 'let the air circulate' because it was so freaky hot on the 7th floor. THe quiet sounds coming from the busy street below in the early afternoon, nobody was out at that hour because once again it was freaking hot.
ReplyDeleteReally like this post :)
How about the sound of playing cards attatched to bike spokes!
ReplyDeleteAh, those were the days. :)
Love your sounds of summer. For me I can still here the sounds of sandy wooden floors and the wooden screen door being opened at the little concession stand at the beach in Union Pier, MI.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun list. How about shouts of Marco...Polo while playing all day in the pool.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific post! Those are all great sounds - and I remember them, too. I'd have to add the voice of my grandmother. "Stay out of the river!" I don't think we minded her very well.
ReplyDeleteYou sure brought back some warm memories for me, Joyce! The one sound that stands out in my mind is the sound of my mom calling, "April, time to come in...dinner's ready!" Sweet sound to my ears!
ReplyDeletewe had hail like that a while back--huge balls---i love your list--especially "kick the can"--:)
ReplyDeleteso familiar all of them
ReplyDeleteI was just trying to explain that needle on the record sound to someone a few days ago.
ReplyDeleteHave a great T-13!

Oooh! Oooh! Ooooooooh! I loved the Good Humor truck jingle! As well as playing the FREEZE! game. I didn't read your entire post with answers because I didn't want to get stuck remembering YOUR sounds!!! But it's really neat how we share some of the sounds of childhood throughout the world!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like when we get rain it has storm. Cicadas & hearing kids outside playing take me back!
ReplyDeleteReading this actually gave me chills. You hit a precious chord of remembrance of my own childhood summers. I think we could have lived in the same neighborhood. I wish we had anyway. Wouldn't we have had fun enjoying those endless days of summer?
ReplyDeleteOh the hyponotic drone of the mower going back & forth, back & forth, back & forth outside the window; back & forth & back & forth & ba...ZZzzzzz....zzzzzzz....zz
ReplyDeleteThe ice cream truck, as well. Drawing on the side walk for Hopscotch. Jumping rope. Crickets in the evening while we sat on the porch. Sweet memories~
ReplyDeleteMom yelling from the door of the house..."Kids...it's time to come inside!"
ReplyDeleteThose are all mine and what Debbie said mom yelling for dinner time.....loved summer as a kid....feels different now!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic list! I can hear it all, and remember the smell of new-mown grass, the coolness and sharp smell of the pool, and the sweet sticky taste of an ice cream sandwich.
ReplyDeleteAll those sounds make me realize that I played outside a LOT more than my children!
ReplyDeleteYour list brought back many memories. And the needle skipping across the record... oops! :)
