Ain't Nothin' But a Hodgepodge

Welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Come in, thaw out, and join the party!  Here are my answers to this week's questions-

1.  Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English.  Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness (go here to read more about how the words were chosen).  Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2014-

selfie, twerk/twerking, hashtag, Twittersphere, Mr. Mom, T-bone, _______on steroids, the suffixes-ageddon and -pocalypse added to anything and everything, from the world of politics the words-intellectually/morally bankrupt and Obamacare, and from the world of sports the words-adversity and fan base

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why?  Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

Twerk/twerking. Or we could just ban news people from 'reporting' it's occurrence. That works for me too.

2. What one unfinished project nags at you begging to be completed in this new year?

I WILL get my VHS and old school 'tapes' into DVD format this year. Probably just in time for the DVD to become obsolete but still, I'm making this happen.

3. When did you last have a bowl of soup?  What kind? Homemade or from a can? What's your favorite soup?

I made Tortilla Soup for dinner Monday night.  I was a little overly enthusiastic with the chillies, and wow it was spicy!  Even hubs said so, and he never ever thinks anything is too spicy. I love soup, especially in the fall and winter months.  Not sure I have a favorite, but my homemade chicken and rice recipe is definitely a contender.

4. Snowed in, snowed under, snow job...which one most applies to your life in recent days, figuratively speaking?

I've been a little snowed under with some volunteer commitments.
I'll leave it at that.

5. What's the funniest movie you've ever seen, or at least one of the funniest?

A little hard to answer because some movies are laugh out loud funny, and some are smart funny where you're smiling on the inside, but not necessarily laughing out loud.  A Christmas StoryNapoleon Dynamite, and Four Weddings and a Funeral all make my list for one reason or another.

6. In general, would you say you're clumsy?

A little. My family might disagree, but I'm going with 'a little' since it's my blog.  Let's just say hubs doesn't like to see me within five feet of a ladder or anything with a blade.

7. Elvis Presley was born on Hodgepodge Day (January 8th) back in 1935.  Are you an Elvis fan?  What's your favorite Elvis tune?  If that's too hard, which Elvis tune do you dislike the least?  Click here for a list of his songs.

Not a crazy fan, but not a hater either.  My favorite Elvis song? This one...it's beautiful.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We saw a couple of movies over the break, one I'm going to mention in its own post, but the other was Saving Mr. Banks.  Loved it!  We all did. I purchased the tickets through Fandango, and they sent me a present- a free download of the book Mary Poppins. I haven't read the book since I was a little girl, but the movie made me want to re-visit the story again.

  1. I'm SO with you on just banning the media from reporting on every twerking influence... I mean, really... what happened to real journalism?

  2. I forgot about Napoleon Dynamite! I would like to see that movie too, and Philomina. Looks like we are of one accord on the twerking!

  3. Oh ya....banning the media [news media] altogether sounds perfect to me. What a blissful world this would be if that were to happen. Your tortilla soup [the more spicier the better] sounds delicious!! Had to laugh at the 'blade' drama. Your hubby is scared to be near you, for what reason? Just kidding!!!!! My son's favorite movie for laughter is Napoleon Dynamite also!!!

  5. I forgot about "Memories". That's the 1 other song of his that I like. I wondered if "Saving Mr. Banks" was as good as it looks. Definitely on my list!

  6. I want to see Saving Mr. Banks, too, but will probably have to wait for it to hit Netflix or Amazon. Mary Poppins was my favorite story in 1st grade - long before the movie came out! I was blessed to be surrounded by books when I was growing up and still feel most comfortable with books (now on my reader...carrying around 800 books with me wherever I go). Thanks for another great Hodgepodge!

  7. I took my VHS family videos to a service that converted them all to DVD...I got it done when my mother-in-law was in a nursing home and we got her a small lap-size DVD player. She spent hours watching and enjoying them. She is now gone from earth but I have the discs and I'm glad she was able to spend her last months reminiscing.

  8. Hoping to see Saving Mr. Banks too. Glad to hear you all liked it. I will be anxious to hear your report on the other movie. I just don't like to spend time or money on a movie that I'm not going to enjoy. Happy Wednesday!

  10. I want to see Saving Mr. Banks, it looks like a good one. You've inspired me to see if I can get the Mary Poppins book from our library. I think it would make a good read aloud :)

  11. Huh...4 weddings and a funeral...the funeral always makes me cry! Banning media or duct taping certain newscasters sounds hilariously fun! Happy New Year my friend!!

  12. You have great taste in Elvis music, Joyce :)
As for "A Christmas Story", I like that movie, too. It's a timeless classic that I never tire of watching.

  13. I'd like the media to stop reporting twerking episodes, but I'd also like celebrities to stop doing it in public!

  14. I know that new thing is streaming but I still love my DVD's. Good for you, I have a few that I need to transfer over too! I love Four Weddings and a Funeral. I've never made Tortilla Soup but use to get it often at Claim Jumper. I'm doing a movie review on Monday and I loved Saving Mr. Banks too.

  15. It didn't tell me my comment was being held for approval, so I'll try again.

  16. I have heard very good things about Saving Mr. Banks. I don't go to the movies very often, so I'll probably watch it when it comes out on Netflix or DVD.

  17. My hubby is the same way about me and knives........thanks for the video, they had an ad for a movie I'd not heard of that looked like it would be interesting.

  18. I have tons of VHS tapes I've been meaning to convert to DVD. I also have slides of my childhood I'd like to make pictures of. I can put it on my to-do list. That doesn't guarantee it will get done though. =)

  19. I agree! Twerking shouldn't be a word and its rather disgusting too. Happy New year to you!! :)

  20. I can't believe we both said "twerking." Great minds think alike. :o) Hubby and I may try to see Saving Mr. Banks this weekend or The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. We so rarely go to the movies but nothing better to do in this cold weather for sure. Happy Day!

  21. I love your Elvis favorite... a great song.
Your VHS to DVD is also on my list. It takes awhile to do each one, but you won't regret it. I started with the most important ones -- the grandchildren learning to walk.
I like what you said about twerking and the news media. Sounds good to me.
Thank you for another fun morning. You take care.

  22. I saw Saving Mr. Banks over the holidays. Very well done, but I should have brought a box of tissues with me. I was very pleased with the current installment of The Hobbit.

  25. Thanks, a lot, for the mentioning of the VHS to DVD because you reminded me I have to add that to my list. And I really didn't need anything else added. Sheesh, Joyce. LOL Haven't thought of seeing that movie. Mostly because I never liked Mary Poppins. I really want to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and August: Osage County.

  26. I love Napoleon Dynamite!! And I really thought that I'd be the only on who was so so on Elvis...

  30. The more I hear of others loving Mr. Banks the more I want to watch it. Maybe soon......I've a lot on my plate for the next few weeks.

  31. I agree; Memories is a very pretty Elvis song. One of my favorites during 11th grade was "Burning Love". I always thought that "Tiger Man" was hilarious. "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" was the one that got my then-former-boyfriend/now husband back together. :)

    Have a great week!
