A Hopeful Hodgepodge

Welcome to another edition of the weekly Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered the questions today, add your link at the end of my post, then hop around and see what others had to say.  Here we go-

1. This coming weekend is Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week. Do you celebrate Easter in your home? What was your favorite Easter tradition as a child?

Yes we celebrate Easter, although this year I think it will be just the hubs and I here at home. I'll still do baskets for my girls and my son-in-law, because you're never too old for an Easter basket. I guess I need to get on that since they'll need to be packed and mailed.

I have lots of favorite traditions, but the first one that came to mind was getting a new dress, shoes, and sometimes even a spring coat.

Some years my younger sister and I wore matching dresses, and it looks like this particular year we got purses too. Look at my little sister stylin' that cross body bag before they were cool-ha! I'm the one (right front) with the pony tail tied up in pink yarn. Remember when little girls wore yarn bows? I kind of remember wearing yarn in the form of a headband too. Can't say I miss knee socks, but I do remember feeling grown up when my mom let us wear knee socks instead of tights. Grown women didn't wear tights in the 70's the way they do now.

2.  George Weinberg is quoted as saying, "Hope never abandons you, you abandon it." Agree or disagree? Share you own thoughts on the word hope.

Agree. I think hope might be my favorite word in the whole English language. It's key to my favorite verse-

"But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning..." Lamentations 3:21-23

3. Weigh in with a yay or nay on the traditional Easter candies. Peeps? Jellybeans? Cadbury Creme Eggs, Solid milk chocolate bunny? Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs? Coconut Cream Eggs? Of the candies listed, which one would you most like to find in your Easter basket?

Yay on all but the Peeps, and even those I think are cute. They just don't taste very good. I like jellybelly beans, but can only eat a couple before they make my stomach do funny things. Same with Cadbury Creme Eggs. My favorite would be a Reese's Peanut Butter Egg.  I don't think I'll get an Easter basket though. I guess eventually you are too old.

4. When did you last feel like 'a kid in a candy store'?

The Container Store makes me feel that way-ha! I know some people don't get that, but I love all the pretty boxes, bins, gift wrap, fun tapes, labels and more. I haven't been to the Container Store since before Christmas though so more recently? Probably looking through my Daughter1's wedding pictures. How to choose, how to choose? They are all so beautiful.

5. What's something you know you do differently than most people? Does that bother you? Does it bother other people?

Apparently the way I use my iPhone and iPad isn't typical of everyone. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, but it makes my husband crazy. I still love my old-fashioned, in-the-drawer, turn-the-actual-paper-pages calendar and address book. He doesn't get it.

6. Palm Springs CA, Palm Beach FL, or the PALMetto State...of the three spots mentioned, which one would you most like to visit right now? Which have you visited at one time or another?

Much as I'd love a warm sunny holiday in CA or FL, I'm going with the PALMetto State (South Carolina) because my Daughter2 lives there. I am missing my Daughter2.

Hi Daughter2! I miss you!

I've never been to Palm Springs, but have spent lots of time in the Palmetto State, and I've been to Palm Beach Florida too.

7. If you could change the length of a day would you lengthen it or shorten it? Tell us why?

While there are times I might wish for a few more hours in the day, and other times I might wish a day would just end already, if given the chance I don't think I'd mess with the order of the universe.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

So what do the first few days of Spring look like in the Garden State?

Well, they look an awful lot like winter.

Except not quite. You can see the pavement, so that's something. There is not a spot of color anywhere in our yard, but you can see the firepit and the grill which means we're headed in the right direction.

And the 'glacier' in our driveway has shrunk by about a foot in depth and width. Still not exactly small, but we're making progress.  That being said I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of those Easters I'm wearing my winter coat to church.

  1. I like your first day of spring pics.

We had a little snow again last night. So pretty.... I know I'm weird, in fact I should probably have chosen my love of snow and winter as something I do differently than most people. :)

  2. Joyce ... love your pic of your family! So cute. My sister and I dressed in matching dresses and I carried on the tradition with my girls. I also have an old fashioned calender. I even tried to use the one on my phone but - no go! Enjoy your week! Hope you get lots of showings this weekend!

  3. Wow ... that's still a whole lot of snow. :-o

And now that I've read A Joyful Chaos' comment, I could have chosen my love of snow as something that I do differently than most people. ;-)

  4. So, I just noticed by reading your answers that I totally forgot a question in my post! The one about the length of a day. Hmmm... could that mean I need MORE time to get everything done?!? No. Probably just absent-minded sometimes. lol

  5. I remember wearing knee socks and liking them more than tights too. I still love writing on a calendar and in my address book. Pretty paper, pens and markers make me happy. I've never been to The Container Store but think I could spend hours in there :)

  6. Well, when I first glanced at the picture of you and your sister, in your Easter finery, I thought it was your two girls. Oh my goodness, the maternal genes are very apparent! :) Thank you, Joyce, for another fun Hodgepodge!

  7. I remember Easter baskets being a big thing, but done at home. Now people buy themed ones in the store and they don't have that same feeling. Maybe it would be different if I were to receive one. And I'd have to agree and say that God seems to have the days set up so I'm happy with that :)

  8. Seems lots of women remember the dresses. And, yes, I remember the bows. I had quite a few colors to tie up my hair with during those early years.

  9. Good morning! That verse from Lamentations popped right into my mind when I read the word hope...doesn't get much better! Soo much snow still...can't imagine. Enjoy your day!

  10. We still have a ton of snow too, but I've noticed during these cold sunny days, that the snow is leaving, albeit slowly!

  11. The sunshine on your snow and sidewalks looks wonderful. You've have a tough winter and I know you welcome the sunshine a lot!

Love the verse from Lamentations!! Thanks for sharing it.

  12. Oh, my! You do have a ways to go before spring finds you, don't you? Like you said, at least you're headed in the right direction :)
As for deciding on those wedding photos...I had a tough decision with that one, too! Best wishes with narrowing the choices down :)

  13. We have snow falling right now, however, we are lacking the piles of snow all around. We never plan an outdoor egg hunt because it's never warm enough to want to go outside and look for the eggs.

  14. I can't believe you still have that much snow! Crazy! I'm grateful that my flowers are now blooming like crazy! I love SC, too!

  15. I wonder if little girls still get excited about Easter outfits. I missed the Peeps, I do like them but I don't buy any candy anymore for Easter. That doesn't mean I won't find something on sale that I must have after Easter. I haven't been to The Container Store in a long time. We would sometimes go when visiting Adam & Tristen in L.A. Great store! I will never stop using a paper calendar and address book unless they stop making them. Glad the snow is clearing however you still have a lot of it!

  16. Hi, i don't like the marshmallow peeps either. They're great for decorating!
Thanks for your prayer, i found out after i wrote my post my great uncle had passed away. He had such a nice, long life. Out-lived everyone in his family.
Hope that snow gets melted soon!

  17. Well, I didn't have a sister so Mom always made the two of us matching dresses at Easter. I remember loving that.

I am so sure I would have a fit in The Container Store but we do not have one within miles of us, so have only been in one very briefly. But, I do know that it would satisfy so many of my organizational desires.

And, you and I are of one accord on #3 and #7.

    Great questions!

  18. Oh, brrr! I remember my first easter in the snow - I was so bewildered to have to cover my cute spring dress with a heavy winter coats and boots, no heels! :-)

  19. I believe we are on the same page (again) regarding the 'smart' phone situation. I did the pinterest peeps cute centerpiece one year. It was darling. And then the ants found it. Yeah, not good. Even though I'm sooo glad all that snow is over there and not here... it does make things prettier, doesn't it? I suppose until it gets to be dirty snow but still. My plan is to clean the pantry today (maybe) then off to the container store go I!

  20. Anything Reese's is good! LOL Not a fan of the creme eggs either...But I do like jellybeans! Have you seen HOP? It's cute! We've watched that in the past, but not likely this year. The kids are older now...Where does the time go? I'm all for a PAPER planner too! I bullet journal. I didn't think about it being something others don't do, but I guess it is! LOL The snow...:sigh: Where is spring?!

  21. I guess we little girls got excited about Easter dresses because that was one of the few time during the year we actually got new ones. There just doesn't seem to be that kind of excitement anymore when most little girls get whatever they want whenever they want it. Yes, to time alone!

  22. I love this post! I think I'm going to have to join up with you all because I truly love the pictures that you post along with the comments. I too remember getting a new Easter outfit and loved hunting for my Easter basket filled with treats. I still give them to my kids and hubby. There is something about keeping fun traditions like that alive. I love PEEPS, from the bunnies to the little chicks. I can only eat a few but they bring back a great time from my childhood.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

  23. Ooohh, you still have a lot of snow!
I love that picture of you and your siblings! Ah yes, a new spring coat with some sort of hat, forgot about that.
I love your hope verse, a kiss on the cheek from a really good God.
    Have a good weekend!

  25. One of my earliest Easter memories is of leaving the church and looking down at my feet as I got in the car...and seeing snowflakes on my patent leather shoes... I'm guessing I was 5.

Great questions this week; I enjoyed playing!

  26. I see we use the same metric for choosing vacation spots...that is visiting our children. We also agree on the length of day and for the same reason. Great minds think alike, I guess or at least I hope so! Thanks for your comment on my blog. Today was much better...I stayed home!

  27. Hi Joyce,
I wanted to stop in. I am taking a blog break to spend some extra time with my family. I enjoy doing and reading the Hodgepodge, so I had to take a peek at this weeks questions and answers.
My husband is right with you regarding the Peanut Butter Egg!

    Have a blessed Easter.
