Splurging On The Hodgepodge

Welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Off we go-

1. What happens to the mail at your house?

Well for starters I feel like there's a whole lot of it. We don't get a lot of magazines, but we do get quite a few catalogs and so many credit card offers. I especially dislike the ones that fill in my name and address in multiple spots on the form when I didn't request a card to begin with.

I try to sort the mail when it comes in, leave anything pertinent for hubs to look at before I file, and immediately shred the junk along with any mail that has our personal info printed on it anywhere.

2. Something you always splurge on? Any guilt associated with the splurge?

Is coloring my hair a splurge? No. It kind of feels like one every time I pay, but really it's a necessity so let me think of something else. I don't splurge on much, but I guess maybe getting pedicures year round would be considered a splurge by some. No I don't feel guilty about it.

3. There are many, but what are two important questions you think every bride and groom should ask/answer before they plan their walk down the aisle?

It's hard to narrow it down to just two, and I think even the two I've come up with have several subcategories of questions, but for brevity's sake-

Do we share the same values when it comes to matters of faith, the importance of marriage, and the desire for children?

Do our ideas about spending and saving mesh?

4. What's the best advice your father ever gave you?

My dad was more a lead by example kind of father as opposed to one who sat us down and talked a whole lot about how we should live our lives. I do know he told me to 'always work hard' and my siblings and I have all heeded that advice.

5. Your favorite movie where a father features heavily in the storyline?

Father of the Bride. Steve Martin as the dad reminds me so much of my hubs in the way he sees his daughters.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

A little housekeeping here today...first off Blogger. It used to be that if someone commented on my blog via Blogger I would see that in my email. Blogger no longer sends comments to email so now if you're on Blogger you have to go to your sidebar and click on comments awaiting moderation in order to see new comments. It's not a huge pain, but it is a tiny little one.

Also, I've had my blog linked to Networked Blogs for years. Whenever I wrote a new blog post it was automatically published on my Facebook page via Networked Blogs. I have quite a few people who follow my blog via Facebook, but Networked Blogs is no longer operating so now it's up to me to add  new links on my Facebook page. Again not a huge pain, but another tiny little one. There are a couple of pay services out there, but I don't think I'll go that route yet.

Technology tries to get the best of me, but it's not won yet.

  1. Yes it's very annoying that we don't get comments in our emails anymore. Even Wordpress blog comments don't appear ! I have put a sticker on my mailbox "No Pub" and that makes a huge difference !

  2. Interesting that our answers to #3 were so similar. The Blogger issue is a real bother to me as I feel unable to really respond. I rarely go back to a blog where I have commented to see if the author replied, so I'm not expecting my commenters to do that either. I feel like I've lost that personal aspect. Just another wrinkle.

  3. We were on the same wavelength for our random thoughts today. The e-mail failure by Blogger is driving me nuts but I'm reluctant to switch to another platform. Thankfully I don't connect my blog with Facebook. Thanks for another set of interesting questions Joyce.

  4. Oh, coloring my hair if definitely a must! My little splurge? Vera Bradley pocketbooks! Oh, do I have quite a collection!

  5. Hi, Joyce!

Well, I guess I should have mentioned coloring my hair.
I get it d one professionally and she hasn't raised my price in ten years.
My hairdresser has become one of my friends :)

We both picked Father of the Bride.
    Gotta love Steve Martin.

    Thanks for another great week!

  6. I must color my hair! The e-mail issue with Blogger is driving me crazy! Just for once I wish they would leave things alone.

  7. I'm not going with the paid services either but I do miss Networked Blogs posting for me. I think that service actually owns one of the paid services now and did you check how much they want to do this for us? No thank you. I color my own hair with chemical free color. All those chemicals seeping into my brain was terrifying me. I need what few brain cells I have left. LOL I would never have guessed you color your hair.

  8. Coloring hair is not a splurge... :) And I love FotB! <3
(I used to be able to comment without using my google account, but I'm not anymore... It links to a blog I DO NOT use... I'm at rainydayinmay.com FYI)

  9. Another Father of the Bride fan here and yes, finances are definitely something couples should talk about before they head down the aisle. Have a great rest of your week!

  10. I wrote my post, put in a title, then clicked over to your post to find we had the same title!!! Great minds definitely think alike, huh???
I hate that Networked Blogs has gone away. I sometimes forget to put my posts on FB...blogging is getting to be too much work (especially when you have multiple blogs!).

  11. I think you are right on getting the hair done. I hate paying for that. I also get pedicures year round but I only go about every 5 or 6 weeks and it's only $20. I don't feel guilty about that. I now wait to post my blog when I am up and available to be the first one to comment. Check the box for follow up comments under your name. All the emails will come into your email account. They will be no reply but just click on the persons name and most everyone has their email available in their profile page. It takes more time and I wish they would fix it.

  12. HAHA, we were thinking along the same lines.. I said father of the Bride, but the 1950 version with Spencer Tracy! I should have said hair coloring... I think I'm going to have to go back to the at home box until we get our renovation completed!

  13. Those are great questions to ask before someone gets married. I did not have a sit down and talk father. Have a great week.

  14. All of us are struggling with the blogging problem and comments. I had figured it out for myself on how to get the comments in email, but then some others who commented were not able to anymore. So I changed it and now it's a little weird.
Your answer to the mail situation is the same here and also the answers about marriage are similar to mine. My Dad also told and taught us to work hard. His example of working was a great example of intestinal fortitude. I'm so glad both our kids and their spouses have followed through with the working hard. No slackards.

  15. I am finally able to participate in the Hodgepodge again. Thank you for hosting.

Ah, hair coloring...a necessity for me, not a splurge. LOL

Have you ever seen the original Father of the Bride, with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor? It's very cute.

I, too, am struggling with Blogger these days. I like getting comments emailed to me, because that is how I prefer to respond to comments. I feel a connection to my readers by responding that way. Now, I have to respond at the blog itself, and I'm pretty sure most people don't come back to look for a response. Thus, it seems like I'm not responding to their comment. I wish Blogger would get it fixed.

    Again, thank you for hosting!

  16. Those "Your credit has been pre-approved" things drive me crazy. Fortunately, we don't get them anymore since we started calling them and telling them not to do that again. Ditto the credit-card checks, where you can write a check against your credit limit. And, catalog companies will stop sending them if you call and ask to be taken off the list. Just thought I'd mention that...

  17. Joyce, I enjoyed reading your answers, today, and if I'd played along, a couple of our answers would've been the same (#3 and #5).
I wanted to let you know that I haven't thrown in the towel on The Hodgepodge, or blogging, but I've had a lot on my plate, lately. Ed and I have been taking our daughter to out-of-town doctor appointments, every other Wednesday, plus there's the matter of "the garden" and all the canning it involves. (tomatoes are processing as I write) I'll be back blogging as soon as I can! I'm so glad you're keeping the Hodgepodge alive. Thanks! Hope to be back before too much longer. Kathy (Reflections)

  18. I somehow think I have responded to your answers earlier, so I'll say that the commenting problem is a problem. And the hair coloring for me is no longer a splurge, but a necessity!! Finances and faith, yes, sirree!

  19. I don't post my blog on Facebook... two different sets of 'friends' between FB and Blogger, so I didn't notice that change. I hear you on paying for hair color. I stopped a few years ago - not because we couldn't afford it but because I decided it was too much money for vanity on my part. I am happy with my odd colored gray, white, blonde, brown mixture now. Thanks (always) for another fun Hodgepodge!! I answered "Father of the Bride" too.

  20. I did not realize the change with the comments on blogger until I saw it mentioned on another blog. I clicked on the ones awaiting moderation the other day and had several.

    Good questions this week!

  21. Jo,

I dislike unsolicited credit card offers, especially those that include blank checks. I'm always opening them to make sure to shred them. What a nightmare that would be IF someone got a hold of something like that!! Thanks for hosting the mid-week fun!

  22. Thanks for the info on comments on blogger. I was all bummed I didn't get any comments on last week's hodgepodge post cause I didn't get any emails. Just checked, I have 5, which is 5 more than most of my posts.

  23. I must not be paying attention. I'm not noticing all these changes to Blogger everyone is grumbling about. I'm going to have to check out my comment moderation to see if there are comments stuck there.

  24. Yes, the issue with Blogger is creating a lot of frustration with many I have communicated with. I have found a work around by checking the "Notify Me" box at the bottom of each published post. I am getting my comments in my email but we are pretty much all coming through as noreply bloggers. Since I have most emails in my contact list already, it's not a huge deal but it is hard to reply to new folks. Thanks for the hodgepodge!

  25. Our marriage questions were one the same page. No surprise there. :)
As far as 'most' things wrapped up... mostly. We have a meeting tonight at the Club so that will take some things off the list too. And of course the rsvps are now coming in and I'm already having some anxiety regarding where and with whom to put everyone. Eh. Kallie had her first fitting last night which was successful. The gal seems quite capable so that was a relief - no stress there. I keep looking at her google docs and thinking there's quite a bit to scratch off still, yet she says "I got it." We're getting so close!

  26. Greetings from NH. I think your marriage questions are basic to most people. My dad was a teach by example kind rather than a philosopher king type. Regarding links, I link my blog to Twitter and Facebook directly. It is not too cumbersome. Happy Father's Day to Hubs. Have a great weekend.

  27. Sorry that you are having issues with your blog, I hate when that happens. Once I remember how to do something, I hate it when things change.. have a great weekend

  28. Good marriage questions. Blogger is giving me fits too. It's just a nuisance and I hope eventually things will level out again.

Thanks for hosting. Interesting questions as always! Have a great weekend!
