I'll Give You Something To Hodgepodge About

Nothing like blogging for a month straight then dropping off the internet for a week or so. It's been busy here and something had to give. The blog it was.

It's Hodgepodge day and if you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger there before you. Here we go...

From this Side of the Pond

1. What's something you may do this month?

I may get in the lake.

I'd love to go for a float but the water needs to warm up some. There are people out there paddle boarding, swimming,  and jet skiing, but not me. I don't mind the water being on the cool side if the air is hot, but that hasn't been the case so far this spring. Soon though! Maybe even May.

2. Hola! Hodgepodge Day lands just after Cinco de Mayo... how do you feel about Mexican food? What's your favorite dish? Do you make it at home or is it a strictly dine out option?

I love Mexican food and enchiladas are probably my favorite dish. My mama's homemade especially. Guacamole is one of my favorite foods and I like a margarita with spicy recipes.

I don't make a lot of Mexican food at home, but we do have tacos, tortilla soup, and a salsa style grilled chicken bowl on occasion. I make my own guac and hubs makes a great margarita. Add a bowl of chips and I could call that dinner.

3. When the children of today grow up what do you think they'll say about this time period? What do you most hope they remember?

What might they say?

I think they'll say we were all a little bit crazy with the masking and the incredible isolation we forced upon them at a very important and vulnerable time in their lives.

What do I hope they remember?

I'm thinking of my grandchildren as I answer this one. I hope they remember feeling loved and secure, and sheer joy at the kind of  freedom they had that belongs to childhood.

4. What advice would you give a new mother?

The internet and complete strangers are full of opinions...trust your instincts. God made you this child's mother by design.

Don't be afraid to ask for help from those closest to you if you feel overly tired or overwhelmed.

5. What's a phrase your mother often said to you? If you're a mom do you say it to your own children?

I wracked my brain, but couldn't come up with a particular phrase my mom said. My dad had a bunch of sayings he used, but we're talking mothers this month.

I think if you asked my girls they could share a few that I said often through the years, and maybe occasionally still do...'no hanky panky', 'text to let me know you made it home', and 'every little thing is gonna be alright' are some of those.  I'm going to ask them because this question has me curious.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Worth the wait...

She finally bloomed!

  1. I think one good thing about Covid and the lockdowns is that some kids and young people developed a very healthy skepticism of the word "expert" and the concept that the government officials know best. They learned this the hard way but they learned it. Your pictures are great! Love that carnation flower.

  2. Glad you have given yourself a little break from blogging guilt free! Your Mexican meal at home sounds like the best kind to me. I agree with your masking observation. I am hoping most of my greats were too young to remember it. Hope your week is going well thanks for hosting this!

  3. I hope it warms out so you can get out on the lake.
I never even thought about the masks and lock downs, they really were crazy times.
My mum used to say no hanky panky when I was on my way out with my boyfriend, I've not heard that phrase for years! lol

  4. As always, thanks for the questions!! I couldn't think of anything I used to say, but just now I remember saying a LOT -- remember who and whose you are! My kids probably don't remember me saying it haha!

  5. Oh that peony is beautiful! Love that throwback pic of a wonderful mama and one of her lovely girls :) Also love your phrases!

  6. Your flower is beautiful! I am with you - I wouldn't be ready to get my body in the water yet. I hope the masking does not become normalized. I still see some young people masking sometimes. There is a Kroger pick up employee that wears a mask out to the car to bring your groceries. She is probably in her early twenties.

  7. I am like you with water temp- I don't mind it on the cooler side if it's really hot, but I can't do cool water and a cool outside temp. When does your lake usually get warm enough to swim? That flower is gorgeous at the end of this post! Thanks for hosting us today!

    1. Normally we swim in May (we still might as it can warm up quickly). This spring has been cooler than most, especially at night.

  8. Congrats on finishing the A2Z challenge! That always wiped me out when I participated. After 2022, I made the decision to sit things out and haven't found the energy to return still.

Anyway last week I resumed with making blog repairs and this lock sets my brain. I either overlooked, deleted accidentally, or never got your email notification for this week's questions. Maybe next time I'll be ready to join in!

You asked sayings we remember our mothers saying. The first thing that came to mind is "Because I said so!". I didn't like it, but that's all it took.

I love Mexican food! We'll occasionally get a to-go order to bring home from Chuy's, but I prefer cooking our meals. When I make Mexican food at home, I like doing beef enchiladas with red sauce, green chile rice, black bean soup or refried beans. I haven't done this in a long time mainly because DH doesn't like store bought flour tortilla wraps. I'd like to try making my own, but haven't yet. Maybe soon!

As for Covid...ugh, that was more about the control and not the illness. That's precisely what those with authority wanted. I hope we learned this lesson well that power over people can be easily abused.

  9. good advice for moms.

As a special education teacher of prek kids who didn't get to have the vaccine the first year here in NYS, I was thankful I could wear a mask to protect my vulnerable students. They survived and did well. We went back to school in person in July and was the first early childhood care center to do so in NYS. We kind of set the standard of how to teach during covid times. By Sept almost all of our public schools were open to some extent.

    Gorgeous flower!

  10. I may go in our pool; but like you, our temps have gotten low so the water is just a wee bit too harsh for my tastes. I'd be interested in how your mom makes guac; I always liked my mom's but I don't make mine anything like hers!

  11. My hubs is the guac maker-extraordinare in our house (lucky me!). We both had a good laugh when I tried making it recently. His unvarnished opinion? "It tastes like mashed avacado with lemon."

  12. Oh hooray! The bloom is a beauty! Our first peony bush on the Seattle side of the mountains had no blooms, then one bloom, then three blooms, then more from year to year. I hope yours survives and flourishes. I was nodding my head through all your answers. We have been busy busy here and providence has it that I won't be around any of our children on Mother's day. That is life this year. I will be with some of my sisters, though. Blessings, happy May, and happy Mother's day to you!

  13. Hello Joyce,
Oh yes, worth the wait indeed. What a beautiful flower. Our tulips started to bloom this week.
'no hanky panky' that one has me smiling.
Can you believe, we have snow flakes falling this morning. The last week of April and this first week of May has been cold here in Wisconsin.

  14. Hope you can float on the water soon. Your enchiladas look delicious. That could be true about the masking but it was what it was. Yes, that is a beautiful thought about your grandchildren and what they remember. Good advice for a new mother. Your answers for #5 are good ones. Absolutely beautiful flower. Have a wonderful day.

  15. My grands all did okay with the mask and all but one did okay with school being closed. Thankfully there was the internet that helped us all through it. Two of my grands lots their aunt to Covid, so that is a sad memory for them. The granddaughter that sings on the worship team says she can't imagine not being able to go to church again. Our Pastor moved services outside once the weather was nice during C. Kids are good at adapting, and they observe how we handle it. We made it through! The margarita looks nice with the orange. Happy Mother's Day!

  16. That peony is beautiful. We were on the same wavelength with our advice for new Mums. Yes Covid was such a strange time but my grands are either too little to remember any of it or won't remember much of it thankfully. Yes it is a relief to be done with the A-Z. I do enjoy it but it's a lot of work that I always intend to do in advance but I never prep enough.

  17. It has been a cool spring here, also. I wore a sweater to school on Monday! A beautiful pink flower.

  18. Love Mexican food. Cheese, beans, meat and freshly-made flour tortillas.

  19. I hope it warms up enough for you to get out in the water soon! Reminds me that I could have said I MAY get to go in the pool at the apartment this month - kind of hoping we can get over there once or twice before we move out!
That margarita looks delicious - I also love a good margarita.
I was thinking about similar advice for new moms.
Beautiful peony - it's so full! Worth the wait for the bloom. Have a lovely week, especially Mother's Day!

  20. Yay! Your peony is gorgeous! I may get my patio furniture out... but it needs to warm up a bit more.

  21. ooh your enchiladas look delish. I don't like spicy so am particular about my Mexican food. Your peony though.....absolutely stunning.

  22. I tell my daughter things like "make good choices" and "homicide is bad" LOL! I'm so glad my grandson won't remember the mask-era, he was just an infant. Love your flower!
