Moving into the Wednesday Hodgepodge-Vol 26

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge...add your link to the bottom of my post and enjoy visiting around today. Here are my answers-

1. How many times in your life have you moved house?

I was less than a year old when I moved the first time. To date I have moved fourteen times. I am not counting moves between dorms while in college although now that I'm a parent and have done that numerous times with my own girls I feel like maybe those moves should count. Moving furniture is moving furniture whether you're going across the street or across the country.

2. What subject would you study if you had a year to devote to it?

Italian...in Italy.
Or French...in France.

3. What in this world breaks your heart?

Hungry motherless children. We can do something about the hunger-

4. What is one item that symbolizes the times in which we live? Why?

I thought about saying the computer but I'm going with the mobile phone. As we were out and about this past weekend and I looked around it just seemed like everywhere I turned absolutely everyone was on a phone. And don't get me started on all the people gabbing while driving in the pouring rain on the interstate. It is a sign of the times in which we live that we feel like we have to be connected 24/7.

5. Share a favorite bumper sticker or t-shirt slogan.

As long as I'm on a rant....
I'm not a big fan of bumper stickers and we don't put them on our cars.

6. How do you like your spaghetti?

I make my own version of Nigella Lawson's sauce with meatballs. Essentially you pulverize onion and garlic and then saute them in olive oil and butter. Add chopped tomatoes, seasoning, some white wine and a bit of milk, a teensy bit of sugar and some chopped parsley. I let it bubble away for a couple of hours and then thicken slightly with tomato paste if necessary. I don't like a lot of sauce on my pasta and I don't like the sauce to be too thick or chunky.

7. What is one piece of advice you would give a recent or soon to be recent graduate?

Some of the biggest and most important decisions of your life will be made in the college and young adult years. God has a plan for your life...keep Him close.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We spent Sunday night with friends in the Annapolis area before heading back to NJ on Monday. We lived there for almost nine years before we moved overseas so we made a little trek thru our old neighborhood. Here are hubs and daughter2 standing on the pier at the end of our road. There is something about sunlight on the water that makes my heart ache just a little.

Especially sunlight on this water.

  1. You and I answered the same way regarding cell phones. I really cannot remember what it was like to have to wait until I got home before making a phone call or checking my email! We are a spoiled human race, are we not?

  5. Well....some of our answers are smiliar this week--I chose Paris and so this morning I thought since my husband hates to travel we should go.....right?? I have adopted through World Vision a little girl in Peru--has been 4 years now. Sometimes we think we have it bad but then we find out how lucky we are. World Vision is a great organization. The dreaded cell phones--I am so amazed at how many times we see people on them. Have a good day!:)

  6. Fourteen times! That's a lot of moving. (I'd die!) From the looks of your photos, you've been blessed to live in some beautiful places, so I'm sure it was worth all of the moving.

  7. I agree on the cell phone issue, although I'm rather guilty myself. And I have a Compassion child. I love writing to him and getting letters and pictures back.
Great questions again this week and I enjoyed your answers. Thanks for the Hodgepodge.

  9. Love Annapolis!! I was fortunate that I was able to visit one time while in the area for business. I LOVED the history. The ideas of people hundreds of years ago walking the same streets.

I know what you mean about cell phones - to think when I was a child, there were times that people tried to call you and you weren't available!!!! Horrifying!!

  11. I call my cell phone 'the leash'. Remember the days when one could blissfully go shopping or have a nice night out without the phone ringing constantly? We are small business owners and thus are on call 24/7. My husband's phone rings all. the. time!

  13. Aww, had I known you were zipping up 95 this past weekend, I would have suggested meeting you near my exit, or having your convoy stop in for iced tea. I love meeting blogging friends and I'm sure you and I can make that happen. We're about 1.25 hrs north of DC and my son (the soon to be college grad) is courting a girl from NJ.

BTW that picture looks like the tributary we crossed near Riva Rd when we adopted our frist golden retriever.

It can be fun but also a little sad to go back to old neighborhoods.

  20. Great advice for a graduate! I hope they read it.
It seems we all agree about the cell phone. I really think life would be so much more complicated without it.

  24. Great bumper sticker, and I agree about not putting them on our cars. We will be helping our daughter move next month, to her newly purchased home. You know how much fun that can be!

  25. 14 moves is A LOT...just wears me out thinking about it! I agree...keep God ever near through every aspect of your life. I'm learning more and more about that all the time and fully believe that when you TRUST...He will see you through! Enjoy your day, Joyce!

  26. I've never seen that bumper sticker before-funny! :)

  27. That is a lot of moves. We don't do bumper stickers either but that one is perfect. I love doing the boxes for children each Christmas with Samaritan's Purse.

  28. My sister and I saw a t-shirt in a toddler 2T size that read "iPood", we all got a pretty good laugh out of that one and I resisted the temptation to buy it for my 18 month old.
