Footloose in the Wednesday Hodgepodge-Volume 51

Welcome to the weekly Wednesday Hodgepodge...add your link at the bottom of my post and come join the party. Here are my answers-

1. Who taught you how to cook?

My mama. She is an excellent cook and I learned mostly by watching and helping. I think my own girls have done the same.

2. Have you been told you think too much? Are too much of a perfectionist? Are too sensitive? Were they right?

What a question! Who wrote this??? It's possible I've had one or more of these statements said about me. It's also possible they were right in saying them. That first one has my name all over it. I definitely think too much. Better than thinking too little though, right?

I'm not an across the board perfectionist, but I do require perfection in certain areas. I used to be more sensitive but as I've gotten older I've developed a thicker skin.

3. As a child did you have a favorite blanket or toy? Tell about it.

My baby doll Catherine-I called her Cathy. She didn't come from the toy store with that name and I'm not sure why I chose it, but my older sister had a friend named Cathy so maybe that's where I got the idea. My doll had auburn hair and didn't do anything really special-no talking or walking or rollerskating or anything else some dolls do now...she was just a regular ole baby doll.

I gave her a plastic bottle, swaddled her, pushed her in a buggy and in general mothered her to pieces. She slept in my bed and every Christmas Eve 'Mrs. Claus' would sneak into my room and quietly take her downstairs. 'Mrs. Claus' bought her a new dress or outfit every year and part of the Christmas morning tradition for me was coming around the corner and seeing my doll sitting beside my stocking dressed in something new.

4. What 'institution' do you have the most faith in?

In spite of what the Kardashians would say I'm going with marriage. Someone remind me again why they're famous?

5. Chrysanthemums, pansies, burning bush, ornamental cabbage...your favorite in an autumn garden?

e. all of the above. Pansies are absolutely irresistible to me...I see them in the garden shop and I just want to buy great big trays full of them. That being said, it would not be fall without the fiery red of the burning bush (euonymus)-

It's my favorite shrub and we have a whole hedge full of them.

6. What superpower do the kids in your neighborhood seem to posses?

Some can fly. Our house sits up on a fairly steep hill and the boys next door like to strap on their skis or snowboards and fly down our hill, across their yard, over the jump they've made from freshly fallen snow, high into the air where they turn a flip just as they soar across their driveway. Then its back to earth on two skis with nary a broken bone. Hubs watches with envy from the sidelines.

I attempted to capture the action during our freak snowstorm last weekend, but it was tough (click to enlarge). If you look at the splotch of red in the center of the picture you'll see Superboy mid- air. You'll also notice three grown men snapping pictures from every angle, wishing they were as young on the outside as they feel on the inside.

7. Are you a fan of the cranberry?

Oh yes, definitely! Wouldn't be Thanksgiving without cranberry sauce/relish. I also love to make my mother in law's wonderful cranberry bread recipe at Christmas time and most mornings I drink cranberry juice mixed with my oj. Love them dried too. I wonder if there will ever be a food question in the hodgepodge that causes me to turn up my nose and say ew, no way!. Somehow I think not.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I went to see the movie Footloose with some friends last night. As far as remakes go it was pretty good but I think I like the original with Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer better. That scene where she stretches between the moving car and her boyfriend's pick up while a tractor trailer is barreling towards them still gives me the shivers.

Course the main reason the original was better is because it came out in 1984. How can you not love the 80's?

  2. I want to plant a hedge along the back propertyline ... of burning bushes, and seeing yours has made me determined to do that.

I have to admit that I didn't think of the institution of marriage ... I was thinking more along the lines of institutions that are organizations.

I think that movie remakes are never quite as good as the originals, but then I think that movies made from books are never quite as good as the books. ;-)

  3. I can see why you like that 'burning bush'...which I've never ever seen in a hedge before...it's superior to ALL Autumn foliage to be sure. And loved reading about your "Catherine baby doll". Now, 'bout Footloose. I'll probably not see the new version as I like the 1st one way too much. Love the Penn brother who 'can't dance'. LOL

  4. Hi Joyce,
First, loved all of your questions this week and can't wait to get started on answering them. Next, think you could share the cranberry bread recipe with us? Your story of your doll Cathy illustrates how you were a born mom even in your childhood, "Mothered her to pieces"). Last, is your background on your blog now gray? That is the way it came up, but then again, my computer could be acting funny and not uploading the beautiful yellow. Have a good week and thanks for all of your effort in providing us a great meme.

  5. Your snowy picture looks like a postcard! BEAUTIFUL, but it sure makes me cold! I definitely overthink everything...you probably already knew that from reading my previous post! :) Enjoy your day!

  6. Love your pretty shrubs and I am jealous of your cold weather as we are still in the 70's and 80's here. Hubby and I decided not to see the new Footloose in the theater. How can you top the original??!
We have so much in common!

  7. There's a beautiful burning bush hedge at the top of our street. It's a row of fire red that is hard to miss and beautiful to look at. And about that freak snow storm, I didn't not like it at all interrupting my favorite season of Fall. It was quite rude! ;-)

  8. I think the Kardashians and a lot of Hollywood have made a sham of the institution of marriage and it makes me mad....especially because there is a whole generation that idolizes them. Love the ski hill in front yard....awesome! The Footloose in the 80's such memories of my HS days!! I have not gone to the movie maybe wait until DVD.
    Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  9. I can't believe you have a whole hedge that beautiful! This time of year I really envy those who live where the seasons do really change. Speaking of which, where are all the wonderful autumn pictures? Have I missed them this year? Or did the snow do away with them early? : )

My sister had the Chrissy doll you mentioned in your comment. I think she cut her hair too. : )

  10. I said pansies and burning bush too. I'm so glad I don't live where you do (no offense meant). No way I want snow yet.

  12. I love the super boys flying in the snow. My boys would have been all over that! Love your beautiful burning bush too. Have a great day!

  13. I loved your doll story! How sweet that Santa brought your dolly a new dress each year.

I can't imagine how they could improve on "Footloose", it's one of my all-time favorite movies.

Thanks for another great set of questions :)

  14. Wow, I'm a bit slow on the draw today but will join in. Love the photo of the bushes, they're so bright but the snow not so much! I'm still shocked that we hadn't had any flurries yet. Usually (Montreal) has some light flurries before Halloween but this year it's been mild and flurry free. (bet I just jinxed myself eh)

  15. I'm SHOCKED that hubs wasn't out there with the kids! It must've been hard for him to sit there and watch!

  16. Loved your answers and questions...used your marriage comment myself. I so agree about the Khardashians.....and I loved your doll story. Thanks for the movie review on the new Footloose. I loved the first one.

  17. Thanks for the video....I'm with Anni...just think I'll skip the new version.....Foot Loose always reminded me that we had no dancing at my high school....no proms....then years later when my children went there, the rules had changed....Thanks for hosting....where do these questions come from.

  18. I have never seen a whole burning bush hedge. That's stunning! Mrs. Claus certainly was thoughtful of you and your bestie Cathy:) Sweet. The ski story gave ME the shivers since my boys have done similar things, but theirs usually end in the two letters "ER." The Footloose music makes me want to get up and dance; I have no desire to see a remake, but prefer to keep my precious 80s memories planted solidly in my mind just as they are!

  19. I love the story of your doll Cathy getting new clothes every Christmas! That is so sweet. And how much nicer than ditching the old doll just to get a new one.

  20. #3 gave me tears in my eyes. What a beautiful memory. #4 I have never followed them and I'm thankful for that! Your burning bush is so beautiful. Love your home and the way it sits on your property, gorgeous. I love Footloose and wonder if I should see the new one. I am sure I will see it at some point. Just bought Cars2 and Water for Elephants!

  27. I want to see the new footloose, but I LOVE the original so I'm skeptical.

And the Kardashians? Ugh. Though, I do have a soft spot for the brother - who's not really in the spotlight with his sisters much, but so sweet on Dancing With the Stars.

  28. Love your story about Cathy. What a sweet memory! I don't plan on seeing the new Footloose. My late daughter loved the original and I want to always think of her when I hear that music!

  29. I am SO glad that we do not have snow yet! We had an ice storm on Saturday, but no snow.

I haven't even seen the first Footloose yet. I'm a bit behind I guess :)
