Over the River and Through the Woods to the Hodgepodge

I know its Tuesday and you're most likely here for the Hodgepodge questions as opposed to a recap of my Sunday afternoon, but lucky you!  I've got both. You are welcome to go directly to the bottom of the post for this week's questions, but where's the fun in that?

Hubs and I stepped away from the chocolate and the sauces and the sugar on Sunday afternoon long enough to take a walk in the woods.  Even though it was gray and rainy it felt good to burn a few calories as opposed to accumulate them.

When we were out driving on Saturday we accidentally passed a State Park we'd never visited before.  As we passed we saw two huge bucks butting heads up on a big boulder and hubs was just sure if we could hike up there he'd find some antlers.  It's rutting season and apparently that's the best time to find them.  Don't ask me...I'm pretty much just a city girl who happens to find herself in the country on a regular basis.

Hurricane Sandy really made a mess of things in these woods and we saw a lot of signs like this one which I felt the need to point out to hubs because I know him.

He just looks at me and laughs and says, 'You're such a rule follower'. Is that a compliment? Hubs is more of the rules schmules variety so he stepped on past it and onto the trail.

Which was closed.

Like the sign said.
Hey, there's a reason they have those signs up people!  As it happens you could get as far up as the boulder but alas, not an antler in sight.

We were not the only ones out walking in the drizzle on Sunday afternoon. These three ginormous Newfoundlands were also out and about and they were a hoot. The black one is called Waldo and when his owner asks him how old he is he barks six times.

Not everyone was impressed.

I insisted hubs tie the bag around her collar because I was certain I heard gunfire. We had some bright clothing on, but wouldn't want her mistaken for a bear.  As it turns out, the noise I heard was coming from a tiny little airstrip tucked away behind the woods.

The runway ends here-

I guess if you misjudge the distance needed to get airborne you end up in the lake?  I am not a fan of the super small single engine aircraft.  Not really a fan of flying period, but it does get you where you need to go and if there's an ocean in between sometimes you have no choice.

Let's go back to the peace and quiet of the woods, shall we?

And the Hodepodge,  which is always happy.  Here are this week's questions...hike back here tomorrow so you can link answers with all the other Internets.

1.  So, when did you last take a walk in the woods? A stroll along the beach? A drive going nowhere in particular in the car?

2.  Are you sending Christmas cards this year?  About how many do you send?  Photo card or something more traditional?  How do you display the cards you receive?

3. What's a word you've heard too much of in the past week?

4. December 13th is National Cocoa Day-are you a fan?  Plain or flavored?  Marshmallows or no marshmallows?

5. What is something you do to help alleviate the hectic pace of the Christmas season?

6. Besides jewelry, what's a favorite sparkly-glittery item in your home or closet?

7. Share a favorite line or two from any Christmas carol.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

  3. I always enjoy seeing the places you go for walks. I'm a huge fan of venturing out and exploring. My hubs is a rule breaker, too, when it comes to following what's on signs and such...he would have crossed over, as well. Another week of great questions...off to work on them now! Happy Tuesday, Joyce!

  4. I love your stories and pictures. You make everything sound so fun. Those dogs are gorgeous, of course, not as pretty as yours.

    Have a great day.

  6. Sounds like a lovely walk, although I wouldn't like to walk in the rain. Sounds like you've got a wild man there, rule breaker and all. lol We have a lot of deer in our woods, and I always wonder why we can't find antlers too, but I guess they deteriorate fast and they're not exactly neon orange.

Have a good day, Joyce. Enjoyed your post!

  7. I enjoyed the hike immensely Joyce!!!

I'm wondering how they teach that dog to bark 7 times next year?!? As for following rules, it'd be just the opposite for me and Bud...I'd be the one that says rules schmules. LOL

  10. I'm with your Hubs....a closed trial is likely to be the most interesting one, though usually I am a rule follower.

  11. The hike looks like it was loads of fun despite the fact that it was closed. It's a nice day in Jersey but cold.. as it should be. Glad you opted to go for a walk!

  13. I would've followed the rules, too. Sometimes I break them, but not usually in public places unless I can think of no good reason for the rule! LOL The dark that barks her age ? Too funny. And I guess that water at the end of the runway serves for quite the motivation to go up, up, and away!

  14. I loved reading your post and seeing your photos. I especially love the first photo looking up the tree. I am usually a rule follower too, most of the time at least. My daughter says I am a big worry wart.
I haven't flown much but I enjoy it tremendously. Though I think I will stick to the big passenger planes.
Thanks for being our host for this meme. I look forward to reading everyone's replies.

  15. Lovely hike you had. DH and I are like you two ... DH would be the one to say "rules schmules", and I'm the "rule follower".

And more about bears? I do believe that I'd be the one who would stay home, inside, safe from bears.

  16. oh those poor dogs! I love to hike but my dog has such little legs and won't go any further than a mile. Have a great week!

  18. There is nothing quite like being out in the woods is there? I find such peace when walking in the woods. Trail or not.
