In The Middle Of The Hodgepodge

Yup. Still here. Still smack dab in the middle of a strange season, still at that thing we know and love called The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions add your link at the end of my post. Then be a good neighbor and leave a comment for the blogger linking before you since that's what good neighbors do. Here we go-

1. August 12th is National Middle Child Day...are you a middle child? If not, where in your family do you fall in terms of birth order? Do you hold true to the typical characteristics of oldest-middle-youngest-only child? (A quick list can be found here) Elaborate.

Am I a middle child? Sort of. What's the middle of four? I'm the third child, but the middle daughter so I think that qualifies.

As far as holding true to the characteristics of the middle born, I'd say mostly yes. I'm for sure a peacemaker which seems to be a trait common to all the lists I checked. I'm also independent, make friends easily, know the importance of alone time, and can sometimes be a tad melodramatic. I know how to negotiate and compromise, but will add that I cannot recall ever feeling left out in terms of my family.

2. Tell us about a time you felt like (or you actually were) in the middle of nowhere.

I read something a journalist I follow (Salena Zito) said when reporting on the last election and it was this-

"...In my estimation, there is no patch of geography in this country that is the 'middle of nowwhere'. This is America; everywhere is the middle of somewhere."

It was an interesting reflection on how the people living in the middle of America, in a multitude of ways, are regularly and unfairly maligned as being 'less than' the people who reside in our large coastal cities.

Anyway, back to the question...there have been quite a few places but probably standing in the middle of the moors back in 2007 tops the list.

It seemed like hubs and I might be the only two people on earth.

3. What's something you're smack in the middle of currently?

Besides a pandemic? Wedding planning. The two live side by side in 2020.

4. What's a food you love to eat that has something delicious in the middle?

The first thing that popped into my head was an ice cream sandwich so I'll go with that. A jelly donut would be a close second.

5. Share a memory from your middle school days, or junior high if that's what your school dubbed kids somewhere between grades 6-8.

Back in the day we called it Junior High, and in our town that meant grades 7-8. In grade 6 you were still in the elementary school and you were king. Grade 7 brought you back down to earth. I disliked grade 7, but cannot tell you precisely why. Everything was awkward and confusing. Somehow the world was right side up again by the time grade 8 rolled around.

Thankfully my mom did not include a bunch of pictures from that era in the scrapbook she made me, but here's one for you...

Appropriately I am in the middle. The one in the pink mini skirt with legs the size of toothpicks.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I have a collection of random thoughts (in my head) that I planned to compile into a blog post on Monday, but then Monday came and went and now here it is Wednesday and I still haven't gotten to it. I'm thinking Thursday is the day, so my random thought currently is I don't have a single random thought today, but if you pop back here tomorrow I'll have more than a few.

Life, time, and blogging are all a little wacky in the age of Corona.

  1. That is a cute family picture. My city is called Corona so I say Covid 19.

  2. I always admired a teacher who taught 7th grade. I mostly taught 6th and & 8th grade. Something was just difficult for those 7th graders; it was like their entire body and attitude changed from 6th to 7th; they became people I didn't know. And then they changed (for the better, I might add) from 7th to 8th. I always blamed it on hormones!

  3. The Moors -- I need to look that up. I think Morgan Freeman might have mentioned that location in the movie Robin Hood (the one with Kevin Costner). I know nothing about it but it does look to be in the middle of no where.

Thanks for the questions this week!

  4. We are definitely living in the middle of a very strange time. I love the photos you posted today. That one really does look like you are in the middle of nowhere and the other is so cute. I think middle school is probably most people's least favorite. At least I know it was awful for me and my kids all say the same. It's a very awkward age. Have a great day Joyce and thanks for hosting :)

  5. Life certainly is wacky. Loved your middle school photo! I have some seriously goofy-looking ones from my middle school years. (There was that year I got a perm that made my hair very very BIG.) I'll look forward to your collection of random thoughts.

  6. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to plan a wedding now. Ice cream sandwich is a good choice. I thought about the donut too but I usually don't eat a filled one. I love the photo with you in the pink mini skirt. Yes life is definitely wacky. I normally don't go into any stores at all!! I ran into Trader Joe's with Mark to get a few things that would just aggravate him if he had to do it. Then I left and he finished the check out. Honestly I thought I would have a panic attack. I'm so afraid to be around people even though we all had masks on.

  7. Ah, I didn't think of jelly doughnuts! I love those!!! I loved your middle school photo, too.
This IS a wacky age of Corona, isn't it?

  8. Love both of the photos you shared. My first thought was jelly donut but then my mind went to so many other things that have great middles like blintzes and piroshky and pelemeni and eclairs and Cornish Pasties but I gave up and settled on a burrito. Hope all your wedding plans go well and you can get all the things you need for the wonderful event. Middle America is maligned a lot and that's unfortunate. Hope your middle of the week goes well. :)

  10. Yep planning a wedding during these times is a tad tricky! I hope your plans are going well. Here you can only have 30 people and I think that includes the Minister and there are also a whole list of don'ts! My boys were supposed to be going to a friend's wedding at the end of this month that was going to be huge. Needless to say they didn't make the cut. I know getting married should be about 2 people committing to spend the rest of their lives together and shouldn't be about the party etc but trying telling that to a bride who's been dreaming of her big day since she was little and had it all planned out. Of course there are worse things going on. Which moors were you on? Definitely in the middle of nowhere.

  12. I could happily be in the middle of the moors in Dartmoor! I'm surprised by how brown it is.
I actually wrote my random answer about middle America before I read your comments about it. Great minds, right?
Thanks for hosting this each week!

  13. Yes, planning a wedding in the midst of limitations is a challenge. Our family struggled with the invitation list most. Being that they have no family up there, factoring in travel, hotel accommodations, spacing, etc., it hasn't been easy. If anywhere would qualify as the middle of nowhere, your picture does it.

  14. I have made an error adding my link and it picks up my blog as My Tat's Cottage when it is actually My Tata's Cottage. My wires will never been uncrossed at blogger. But you have a game plan for all this madness with wedding planning so that is something to be very proud of. This was quite fun as usual and I am very late but still able to link in. Thank you always for hosting and sharing your thoughts. HUGS across the miles XO
