Lucky Thirteen

Maribeth over at Dackel Princess does a little something she calls Thursday Thirteen and since I feel like a list today I'm doing the same. Everyone go say hi to Maribeth. After you read my list of course!

1. American Idol-I guess I'm in the minority but I am feeling pretty eh about this season's contestants. So far there isn't a single one I find myself looking forward to hearing from each week, no one whose singing makes me want to hop over to Itunes and download their song. There's a bright spot here and there but mostly, eh. I do look forward to seeing JLo's look every week-she is beautiful, and to hearing what kind of crazy Steven Tyler will bring, but otherwise-eh. And I think they need to be a little tougher on some of the contestants. Tough doesn't have to be mean but most weeks I miss having Simon there keeping it real.

2. Did I mention it snowed here yesterday? And last night? And it's the end of March? Just checking.

3. We are re-doing our master bathroom shower. The old shower and dry wall behind have been removed and since we're tiling the shower floor a special tub had to be ordered which will take 'a couple of weeks' to get here. Give or take. Ahem. Yesterday the tiler was here all day making the dog nervous with his hammering and sawing and whatever it is carpenters do. The original time frame on this job was three weeks. They removed the existing shower March 9th. Raise your hand if you think this project is going to take longer than three weeks?

4. Daughter1 has been in D.C. for a few days. She was due to fly out at 7:30 last night and she sat on the plane for a good long while before the flight was cancelled and they were taken back to the terminal at 9:30 PM. We finally got her re-booked on a flight for this morning and waited while she rode the metro back to her friend's house for the night. Nothing about travel is easy anymore, is it?

5. We have our neighborhood book club tonite. We read My Father's Paradise by Ariel Sabar which is described as 'a son's search for his Jewish past in Kurdish Iraq'. While its not a book I would have picked up on my own I've found it really interesting and an easy read, not something I was expecting given the description. One of the things I like most about being part of a book club is that it gets me outside my reading box. I've read some great books that I know I would have missed if they hadn't been a book club selection.

6. I love using the kindle app on my ipad. I didn't think I'd like an electronic reader but I do. One of the bonus features? Reading in bed without turning on the light...the ipad screen allows me to read and hubs to sleep undisturbed so everybody's happy.

7. We are meeting friends from the UK in the city on Saturday and I can. not. wait. We haven't seen these friends since they moved back to Texas in 2007. Their son1 and our daughter1 were big pals in high school and he's getting married this summer which I'm still trying to get my head around. Their son2 broke our daughter2's collar bone when his head collided with her shoulder in a friendly football match. Just so we're clear-my daughter wasn't in the match...she was on the sidelines. She is a magnet for stuff like this. She would not disagree.

8. We still have not booked a holiday.

9. I'm getting my hair cut and highlighted tomorrow. I can tell you right now its gonna be a good day.

10. I have struggled with my family room mantle since we moved in here. It has two story windows on either side and a mirror that reaches two stories above the fireplace too. I love it but it is tricky to decorate which is why I finally had a decorator come out and give me some advice. I've ordered something per her suggestion and I can't wait for it to arrive. Here is a before picture taken from the upstairs hallway...please disregard the dog asleep in the chair....her life is rough-

I'll post the after in a couple of weeks because nothing happens fast in the world of home improvement, does it?

11. Why is Easter so late? Why is the date so apparently random every year...sometimes it's early March and other years it's late April? We normally go to Tennessee for Easter but since we're headed south in early May to-what else?-help a child move-we've decided to have the girls come home for the holiday. I can't wait!! I still make Easter Baskets for my girls and I enjoy that. (So do they!!) And I especially look forward to sitting in church and looking down the pew and seeing my whole little family all together. Sigh.

12. I just googled my Easter question and am gonna share what I've learned because I think a blog post can be both random and educational-

The answer is-it's complicated. In short, Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox. The long answer is too long, even for my blog but if you're curious you can read more here.

13. Did I tell you we have snow?

  1. And we did not get any snow from this last storm! It all stayed south of us. Shhhhh! I know...I will jinx myself.
    Here's to Spring arriving soon!

  2. You can keep the snow, but I'd like some rain. We've also had some 80's weather.

I knew the Easter question..yes, I really did!

  3. I think I may end up with a list today too. If I get around to posting that is.

I used to be in a book club and I like it for the same reason you do until they started picking books along the lines of Danielle Steel. Life is too short to read bad books!

  4. I feel the same way as you do about American Idol...take it or leave it. Everyone just seems to be sort of ho-hum. Thanks for solving the question about Easter...I'd wondered the same thing!

  5. Have you been out yet? The snow has a layer of ice underneath. I found the weather freaky last night. Did you have thunder and lightening? I love to get the hair done - its my favorite thing to do!

  6. 1. Agree, eh.
    2. You may have mentioned it a time or two. :)
    3. Raising my hand.
    4. No, it's not and I age a year everytime one of mine is flying and I have no control. Ugh
    5. Sounds like an interesting read.
    6. Love my ipad book too!
    7. Saturday in the City sounds like fun and like you're so cool. :)
    8. Bummer. I'm so looking forward to our little week in the sun next week but I don't think we'll get a family vacation this year. We'll see.
    9. Love the Hair mataintence day!
    10. WOW! That is one large mirror! I would have gone for help on that one too! You wouldn't want to ever get tired of it, would you? I bet that would be a killer to remove.
    11. All of ours will be home also. I think the Hubby did not want a repeat of my mood when we were not all together last year. :)
    12. I knew why it was late but still. Annoying.
    13. Yep. :)

    Have a great day!

  7. I enjoyed your random list today! I'm sorry about the snow...perhaps this will be the last of it???!!!

I, too, was wondering why Easter is so late! I know you are looking forward to having the girls home together...there's nothing like having them all in church together again!

I love making Easter baskets! Shopping for those baskets was almost as fun as shopping for Christmas when our children were small. These days the grandchildren get the baskets :) only this year I'm doing felt bags for something different!

  8. We were enjoying 70+ degrees here for a few days, but it's back down in the 40s today. Overnight temps near freezing. ugh! I've never participated in a book club. Maybe that would prod me to read more. Loved your list. Thanks for sharing. Blessings, SusanD

  9. I love your random posts. Nothing like an update from daily life.
Glad your girls will be home for easter. I am slowly forgetting my girls were ever away. It´s so good to have them both so close by.
Snow, huh? Maybe that means you´ll have a long summer. :)

  10. I could care less about AI too, but my kids enjoy it, so we watch. JLo has such beautiful hair, she makes me want to go out and get mine done! We had flurries this morning, but no accumulation. I sure hope we have a long summer, I'm ready..bring it on!

  11. Well, if you're anywhere near Nashville, give me a holler. I'm not far from there. It'd be cool to meet!

  12. Bathroom project -- probably longer than 3 weeks. Sorry - it's the law, I think, that they have to run over both the time estimate and the budget estimate.

Hopefully your special order tub doesn't get Lost in America the way our special order counter tops did!

But it will be worth it when it's done!

    Hugs,
    Cath

  13. Snow? Blech! They got snow north of us... 9-12"! We didn't get any! But it's chilly and it makes the whole I'm-not-wearing-my-winter-coat-anymore-thing a little challenging. But I'm sticking to it! :)

  14. I bet it takes longer than 3 weeks...do I win something? :D
It's been in the 70's here this week...until today. Only made it to the 50's, and there was a tornado in Greenback last night. Freaky weather.

  15. Have been enjoying 70+ weather, but today-only in the 40's-geez!!!! In a book club also and I love it-yep it does get you out of the box of reading more books!!!

  16. I can say amen to the home improvement always taking longer. It's one reason I DON'T want to start the master bath redo. I think I can live with a one-dollar white liner duct-taped across the big whole in the wall another...several months? OY!

And Yay for answering the Easter question for me. Astronomy and i don't see eye to eye (it's over my head in more ways than one0. LOVE you big mirror and windows, and yes, I would be hiring a decorator, too. Wow, what a great "problem" to have!

  17. Love your 13 today or from yesterday I'm behind! Can't wait to see what you do with your mantel....I have that dilemma with mine how to decorate. Have fun in the city this weekend! Stay warm!

  18. I always enjoy a good list! Good way to combine a bunch of unrelated trails of thought,

I agree with you on the American Idol judging. Even if they are terrible, they rarely say anything negative. Missing Simon a little.
I think the girls are better this year.

Sorry you had more snow. We dodged this one.
    Have a good weekend!

  19. If you are an idol watcher...I saw Mandisa last night in concert in Montgomery, AL. She was awesome. Remember she was the girl Simon made fun of because of her weight. If you ever get a chance...go see her. She is awesome.

  20. I like that book clubs cause us to read things that we would normally never read. It's fun to read new things! Don't feel too badly, it's snowing here too...been spitting all day. Can't wait to see what you got for your living room.

Thanks for stopping by the domestic fringe yesterday and leaving a comment!

  21. Oh, I'm loving American Idol this season, I think it's one of the more talented seasons. How funny! I especially like Pia.

I wondered the same thing about Easter. Why not just set the 2 Sunday in April as Easter and leave it at that. :o)

Enjoy your weekend, sounds like you have a fun one planned. Blessings!

  22. Not even a great lover of Math, but I went over and took a peek at how Easter is "calculated." whew! Interesting.

I, too, love having my adult children join the rest of our gang at home and going to church and looking down the row. I always get teary-eyed. My daughter used to pat my hand and give me a knowing smile. Now she just kind of rolls her eyes with the unsaid expression, "Here she goes again!" :) Still love being in church together no matter what.
