Batter Up! Time for the Wednesday Hodgepodge Vol 74

Welcome to this week's edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you're looking for today's A-Z Challenge post featuring the letter 'P' it will be up shortly. For now you'll have to make do reading my answers to the weekly Hodgepodge. You're invited to play along too...the more the merrier!

1. Spring is in the air (at least in my neck of the woods) and the birds are singing...what's your favorite bird?

Impossible to choose.

Bluebirds (NOT Bluejays), cardinals, hummingbirds and the hawk-

...especially this one who lives in our yard.

2. Speaking of birds...do you tweet? If you do share your screen name and we'll come flocking to your twitter site. Even if you don't let's all pretend here that we do-in 140 characters or less, sum up your week so far.

I said I wouldn't but I do. I don't tweet a lot but I enjoy following people there. My screen name is Daleyjoy or you can click the twitter feed on my sidebar and it will take you there.

My tweet in response to this question?

"In post party recovery mode at our house this week. Someone has to finish off the leftovers, right?"

3. It's been reported recently that employers are not only viewing the facebook pages of potential hires but they're also requesting your facebook password to have a look at what you've kept from public view. What say you?

I say put on the breaks Big Brother.

Let me back up and say that I do think employers have every right to view a potential hire's facebook page. So does the entire universe for that matter, as long as it's public. I think a line is crossed though, in asking for your password. If the general public can't see it then I don't think a potential employer needs to see it either.

4. It's April and you know what that means-Major League Baseball is back in action. What's your favorite baseball themed movie? If that's too hard what's your favorite sports themed movie?

My favorite baseball movie is The Rookie with Dennis Quaid. For Love of the Game with Kevin Costner would be a close second though.

I think I'll recycle this question when football season rolls around.

5. Something else this season brings-asparagus. Yes please or no thanks? If it's yes please what's your favorite way to have it prepared?

Yes please! One of my favorite vegetables...I like it best roasted with a little salt, pepper, and olive oil then topped with a gentle sprinkle of Parmesan. Yum!

6. What drives you? (Don't you love how I sandwiched that one in between asparagus and jugglers?)

I suppose we're all driven to some degree by our passions. Combine a healthy dose of good old fashioned curiosity with my naturally competitive nature and boom- I'm halfway there. But halfway where?

If this question is asking what drives me to do what I do then first I have to answer this-

What is it that I do?
Tough question.

What I do has certainly been a fluid thing-daughter, sister, student, friend, speech pathologist, wife, mother, teacher, school director, ex pat, volunteer, empty nester...at one time or another I've filled each one of these varying roles. The only commonality has been what's driven me- knowing my ultimate purpose.

I'm not talking about a target or goal to be attained, but rather the belief that I was placed here 'for such a time as this' not by happenstance, but by design. That God has a plan for my life and no matter where I'm living or 'what' I'm doing He is the author of my story. No matter how small or insignificant or menial a task may seem, I'm part of a bigger story and I want to play my part well.

Do I always succeed? Not by half. But I'm driven to keep trying.
Wow, that got heavy.

7. April 18th is International Jugglers Day...can you juggle?

In a word, no.
Hubs can though.
You're not surprised are you?

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Last Friday I enjoyed a lovely lunch (lakeside!) with two fellow NJ bloggers- Darlene who blogs at Adventures of a Middle Aged Mom and Kim who blogs at Kimberly's Korner-

This is the second time we've gotten together and we gabbed for a solid two+ hours. So fun! Is anyone planning to attend BlogHer in NYC this summer? Let me know...we're going to try to get there and would love to meet you in person if you have plans to attend.

  1. My thoughts exactly about Facebook. What idiot would give their password out? I would think twice about hiring someone who'd share it, honestly.

Not at all surprised your hubby can juggle.

And here's a question--did you know Darlene and Kim in person before you started blogging, or did you meet afterwards? I think it's so cool. I've met two of my blog buds since starting. You do sort of feel like you know each other from their writing, and you don't have to start from square one.

  3. Enjoyed your answers! Love #6 heavy but love it! Sorry about the mess up on my link address, the first one is just my blog, forgot to click on my post. I wasn't sure how to fix it.

  4. Hold it right there, Joyce. You were a speech pathologist? Me, too! How in the world did I miss that! How long did you work in the field? I worked for only about 4 years before Brittany came along and I became a stay-at-home mom. Such a small world, huh? Your answer to #3 is spot on!

  5. They had a big blog convention in Nashville a month or so ago, but I didn't go. That's my goal on of these years, though!

  9. I love birding, so that image at the beginning is a special treat for me. Bird photos, that is!!! And your asparagus question...ewww....even your answer. LOL, I dislike it as much as okra. I forgot the movie "The Rookie"...yes, that WAS good. Oh, and your luncheon...great smiles [you three ladies look like you all could be related in a way, too!]

  10. I love hawks! We have a neighborhood watch hawk too!

Party leftovers? I went to a student's house to tutor, mentioned I was hungry as I shared her popcorn, and mom set out a spread of bridal shower leftovers that could have become my dinner! I love party leftovers. :)

  11. #6 was hard! You do have a way of adding one hard question, don't you. Love asparagus as well.

  12. I love your answer to #6.

How exciting that you got to meet some fellow bloggers. Must not be any bloggers in my neck of the woods ... at least none that I've encountered.

  19. I've always been fascinated with Bluebirds, but those are so rare to see. My in-laws use to have a family that returned every year. I was priviledge to catch a glimpse only once. :(

I think it's great you can get together with a couple of your blogging friends - really cool! That would be awesome to go to the BlogHer conferance in NYC. If I ever get to something like that, then I'll be sure to let my bloggy friends such as you know.

Whew, a university graduate! Now that sounds exciting! My fingers & toes are crossed DS gets through his college years with flying colors. Say a few prayers for him, please!

    Thanks for hosting!

  20. My post scheduled for midnight did not post! Weird, that's the first time that has ever happened. I always enjoy seeing your answers Joyce knowing you have a reason to ask them. Great answers. How awesome to meet with some of your blogging buddies. Hopefully I will get caught up with your other posts today. Enjoy the rest of the week.

  21. Another great set of questions, Joyce!

Your answer to #6 could have been a post by itself! I don't know how you are keeping up with all of the writing you've been doing. I tip my hat to you :) Great job!!! (You'll need that beach vacation by the time you reach the letter Z) (Kathy)

  22. Nope, not surprised that hubby can juggle. HAHA!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I could have written that answer to #6 myself. Well, it would not have come off nearly as eloquently and with half the words ;) but I would have meant the same thing.

Of course the Hubs can juggle! :)

  24. I like the roasted asparagus, but never thought about putting parmesan on it. Yum!

  25. Good answer to #6 and I'm following you on Twitter now too!

  26. I totally agree with your answer to #3. In addition to Zoanna’s “What idiot would give their password out?” I say “What idiot would ask for it?” It’s not professional unless you are a professional crook.

I like your movie choices! Kevin Kostner and baseball movies just always fit, yanno?

The only reason I answered anti-Cardinal on my blog is 100% baseball. I’d probably give extra bird treats to a cardinal that chewed on Lance Berkman’s ear! LOL

    Following you on Twitter too!

  27. I loved No.6 but I detest asparagus. And I loved reading this post. But don't make me eat asparagus.

  28. How fun to meet up with other bloggers! So far I only know one who lives not too far away but we have yet to get together.
Are bluejays mean? I picked them for my favorite bird but now am thinking I may have heard that.
