On Dasher, On Dancer, On Hodgepodge...

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Add your link at the end of my post, then go say hi to your neighbors. Hodgepodge next week (12/25) but do come back to ring in the new year the week after (1/1/14).

In the words of Tiny Tim, "God bless us everyone!"

1. Do you believe in miracles?

2. What's a recent fad you admit to trying?

Kale chips.
Surely the obsession with all things kale is just a fad.

I love most veggies, but kale chips? Blech!

3. Peppermint-are you a fan? If so, what's your favorite food or beverage containing peppermint?

It's funny how our tastes change. I never used to be a fan, but all of a sudden I love it. Not so much on its own, but combined with something chocolate it's my new favorite thing.  I make a peppermint chocolate chip cookie that is delish. I also like to stir my cocoa with a candy cane for a great chocolate peppermint combo.

4. Break the ice, on thin ice, as cold as ice (emotionally, not literally) which phrase have you run into most recently? Explain.

Nothing comes immediately to mind, so I'll say break the ice. I'm on the board of a local women's club, and meet new people all the time.

5. Have you ever broken or spilled something in someone else's home? Still friends?

When my girls were little we went to a friend's house for a morning play date.  The mom and I were enjoying a lovely cup of tea in her cozy kitchen and our daughters were happily playing upstairs. After we'd been there a while Daughter1 and her friend came into the kitchen wearing bright pink lipstick, artfully applied on and around their lips, which sent my heart racing and my feet running to see what Daughter2 was into.

That would also be lipstick.

It was all over her AND all over their just cleaned carpet.  Did you know lipstick is oily, especially the cheap kid kind?  Somehow it all came out of the rug, and we're still friends who can laugh about this twenty years later.  In her defense, Daughter2 was only about 2 years old, so her mother should have known better than to take her eyes off her. Also, she's Daughter2 so her mother should have known better than to take her eyes off her.  Hi Daughter2!

6. 'Tis the week before Christmas...are you feeling more like Buddy the Elf or the Grinch before his heart grew?

No Grinch in me, but I haven't reached full on Buddy mode either.

7. Share a favorite quote relating to Christmas.

These words from the beautiful carol Oh Holy Night,  composed by Adolphe-Charles Adam-

"...Long lay the world, in sin and error pining
Till he appeared and the soul felt it's worth...."

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

In keeping with my plan to share the happy in my random space this December, I'm linking to an absolutely precious rendition of The Christmas Story. Click here to watch. Seriously one of the most adorable things I've seen, and guaranteed to make you smile!

Wishing you peace and joy this Christmas season!

  1. You're much braver than I am...I don't think I'd ever try kale chips. As for the lipstick and 2 yr. olds...that is way too funny. Probably wasn't back then, but it's good to laugh about it all now. As I've said before..."In 100 years, it'll make no difference." Now, I AM gonna have to try the candy cane and hot chocolate. That just sounds like all kinds of right!!!!

  2. Joyce...I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has a daughter who smeared lipstick into someone else's carpet! Still makes me shudder a bit to think about it! I love "Oh, Holy Night" me goosebumps to think of the birth of our Savior! I have yet to try kale chips...just haven't been brave enough yet to take the plunge!

  3. Kale chips just doesn't sound right much less taste right. Have a wonderful Christmas!

  4. I just cannot make myself like kale. I think it's because I put too much of it in a smoothie I tried to make one day, but the flavor is just too strong for me.

Makeup is nearly impossible to get out of carpet. My Chicky had her own early-morning party on my bathroom floor (dressing area) when she was about a year old...climbed out of her crib, snuck into my room, and quietly got out every bit of makeup I own...spreading it on the floor.

We installed baby locks on those doors that day!

Have a wonderful Christmas, my friend!

  5. Kale just doesn't seem edible to me, just too....much.
That lipstick story is certainly a memory!
Love the words to that Christmas song, so true.
Merry Christmas if you don't post again before Wednesday! Thank you for being our commander in chief!

  6. Oh, my! Lipstick on someone else's carpet! No that's a heart-stopper.
    Kale chips? No, thank you.
I loved video of "The Christmas Story". Precious!
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas! (just in case I don't get a chance to tell you again)

  7. I'm with you on the peppermint and and chocolate, yummy! Love the lipstick story. I have to watch my little Princess on that type of stuff, she does love lipstick. A most wonderful and blessed Christmas is wished for you and yours.

  8. You took my quote.. that part in O Holy Night gives me chills every time.

  9. Oh my-lipstick!! Wow. Enjoyed your answers. Merry Christmas!!!

  10. We're enjoying kale here, though I haven't been able to try kale chips yet. We had a great crop in the garden this year. I love it fresh in my salads in the summer and I juice it too.

Loved the video - I HAVE to share that!

  11. Lipstick is very hard to get out although I think crayon is worse. Thanks for all of your efforts to make Hodge Podge work every week. Have a Merry Christmas and will join you next year.

  12. Thank you for this week's Hodgepodge, Joyce! Merry Christmas to you and yours!! Blessings!!

  13. I agree with you on kale chips (that was my answer too).

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  14. Yeah, I just don't get the kale thing at all. Yuck!

  15. Joyce, enjoyed reading your answers today. Thank you for sharing the video, so precious. Have a wonderful Christmas.....Love, Debby

  16. Yum, candy canes and hot chocolate!
Thanks for all the great weeks of Hodgepodge. Merry Christmas!

  17. I haven't tried Kale chips, i am afraid! Anyway regular veggie chips are just as good. I just made some peppermint bark cookies yesterday, so delicious! I used to not like peppermint that much either when i was younger. I still don't like candy canes, it has to be with chocolate! Have yourself a Merry Christmas!

  18. Daughters 1 and 4 are the ones I should NEVER have taken my eyes off. And do I ever have stories about the two times I did. LOL Wishing you and your wonderful family a very Merry Christmas!

  19. Thanks for sharing the precious video. I think my favorite is the littlest wise man. And the baby, of course. Oh, and the angel. :) Wishing you and your family a peaceful, blessed Christmas. (And just say no to kale.)

  20. Merry Christmas! Thanks for hosting. See you in the new year!

  21. Merry Christmas Joyce!!!.. And as always, thanks so much for hosting this event! ~tina

  22. Merry Christmas Joyce!!! thank you for the fun hop

  23. I don't think I can eat Kale Chips. My sisters and parents are totally into a salad that consists mostly of Kale. I kinda like it, but not as much as they assume I do. :) I use Kale in smoothies and when I add enough fruit, you can't taste it. ha ha.
That video is one of my favorites!

  24. Kale chips don't even sound good to me so I never tried them. Nice video and thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful and Merry Christmas.
