Where is Thomas Edison When You Need Him

So I'm attempting to blog from my iPad and it's not going well which is how it usually goes when I blog from my iPad. Not well. I'm also in a busy public library taking advantage of their wifi and basic electricity because we are on Day 3 of no power at my mom's house. Pesky storm.

Tuesday evening we were on our way to meet my brother for some delicious Indian food, which btw hubs and I had been looking forward to all day, when the weather alert on my phone began buzzing furiously-Tornado Warning!! Seek shelter immediately!! The sky was growing darker and greener by the minute and there was crazy scary lightening striking every which way, and then my brother phoned and said they were heading to their basement and we better pull over and stay put.

There happened to be a Walgreens Drug Store on the corner so we pulled in and very nearly blew away running the long five feet into the store just as the skies let loose in a powerful way. Do you know what I observed about Walgreens as we hid from the storm? Walgreens loves windows and has a lot of them. A lot a lot. As in the whole complete entire front of the store. We moved to the pharmacy in back which was better and waited out the warning for the next thirty minutes.

The worst of it blew on by so we headed on to the restaurant because it would take more than a tornado to keep us from our Indian food. Driving home most traffic lights were out, and pulling into the neighborhood we realized the power was out there too. We figured it would return sometime during the night, but sadly that was not to be.

Small problem(s) in the neighborhood.

There's another pole just like this one down a few feet further so yeah, it's Thursday and still no power. There were trucks on site today so here's hoping!

We woke up Wednesday morning to the sound of my moms neighbor pounding on the door at 8 a.m. That's a little early for company except bless his sweet thoughtful heart, he'd driven three towns over in search of an open shop and was holding a carton of hot Krispy Kreme coffee in his hands for us to share.

And just like that, the world felt less harsh. May there be small kindnesses in your day too.

  1. My daughter had a similar story yesterday in Charlotte. A bad storm knocked out power and the intersection lights were out as she came home from work. Then she saw firetrucks near her condo development & they were putting out a grass fire! Lightening must have struck there! She got in her place, had power - for 2 minutes. It went out & she got an automated call from the electric company saying for safety reasons during repairs the power would be out! So, being the resilient 20 something she is she grabbed her purse, got back in her car - and drove to an open bar with power! She had to see her UVA team win the College World Series last night!! 4. Awe, now that made my heart smile! What a thoughtful gesture and whose day doesn't go better with coffee to get it started. Guess you sort of feel like you are camping out. I don't do well blogging from my IPad either.

  5. Oh my!! How nice to get that hot coffee! So sorry for the power outage and all the damage. Glad you are all safe! We were without power for three days during one of the hurricanes a few years ago. Not fun at all. Hope the power is back soon!!

  6. I am so glad that you & hubs are safe. We just had tornado warnings here in the Granite State. Thankfully they are rare. Most people are kind and compassionate. Krispy Kreme coffee? No doughnuts? Oh well!

  7. A strong thunderstorm moved into our area tonight--just as the weather alert system alarm shook me from my dozing-off state, and I read your post. I hope your power has been restored. It's becoming quieter outside, hopefully the worst has passed.

  8. Thankful everyone is safe. Funny what you said about the iPad. I do 90% of my blogging from my iPad because right now the computer has been in and out of the shop (frustrating) and once you get through the little annoyances, mostly keyboard issues, it's not so bad. I go back to the computer and I have to get use to doing it differently all over again. And yes, that little kindness from the neighbor - priceless! Still good people in the world.

  9. I've blogged from my iPad, but I really prefer to blog from my laptop. What a sweet gesture from the neighbor ... just about when we lose hope in humanity, someone will do something that restores it. Hoping that you will have power *soon*.

  10. Oh my goodness... I am glad you guys are alright and I hope you have your power back. When we lived in Tennessee these kinds of storms would come through several times a year and totally freak me out. People there were so used to tornado warnings they would basically just go on with life as normal most of the time. (As in, "Is homeschool co op cancelled due to tornado warnings? No, just drive around the north bypass as it looks like the storms are coming through the south side of the city.") This struck me as particularly nuts since these same people would cancel because "their neighbor thought they had seen a snowflake" in the winter! :)
