Marching To The Beat Of Your Own Hodgepodge

We're 'March'ing today into this week's edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered the questions, add your link at the end of my post, then leave a comment for the blogger before you. Here we go-

From this Side of the Pond

1. Hello March! Is it coming in like a lion where you live? How do you feel when it rains?

No lion here. I'm typing my answers on the last day of February, where it's currently a sunny 78 degrees.

How do I feel when it rains? Depends on what I'm doing I guess. I love the occasional rainy day where I have nowhere to be and can curl up under a blanket with a book or, my favorite, sit on the porch and listen to it fall. That being said, it feels like we've had a lot of rain this winter which gets tiresome after a while.

2. What's something you'd like to do differently this week than the last? Explain.

I was at my daughter's for most of last week and wouldn't change a thing about that. I can't really think of anything about last week that I need to examine for a re-do. Maybe exercise more because that's a common theme for me every week lol.

3. March 1st is National Sunkist Citrus Day...do you drink orange juice? Orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit...what's your favorite citrus fruit? A dish you love with a citrus fruit as one of its key ingredients?

I love citrus fruits, all of them. I'm not supposed to have grapefruit because weirdly grapefruit can interfere with blood pressure medication, but I do love it and miss it. I honestly can't pick a favorite fruit or dish but some that would make the cut are key lime pie, my mama's lemon bars, chicken piccata, and an orange crush from our local tiki hut on a hot summer's day.

4. What do you consider to be your culture. Elaborate.

Our 'culture' includes food, dress, language, and holidays, but also includes values, beliefs, and behavior. I'm going to say 'the south' with a side of Jersey thrown in for good measure. And Jesus people. They're my people too. And America. I claim her, warts and all, God bless her. I think as a nation we've lost a bit of our identity and that makes me sad.

5. Sum up your February in fifteen words or less.

It flew.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Who shops at Trader Joe's and what's on your 'must buy' list there?

  1. I don't shop very often at Trader Joes even though there's one pretty close by. I do try to keep their "Everything but the Bagel" seasoning on hand. I give a big agree to your #4.

  2. With Greg's new medications after his stroke, he has to avoid all things grapefruit, too. I like your culture answer. Trader Joe's always has good value on wines with some great wines from great vineyards under other labels. Just ask the wine guy in the store for recommendations. We like their Mediterranean hummus and their packaged pre seasoned meats. Flowers are also something they have that are a great value, too. Just bought a beautiful large bouquet of tulips for $7.95. Lemons and limes are usually less than at the local grocery store. Unfortunately we have to drive an hour and a half to get to Trader Joe's or any other big box store besides Wal-Mart.

  3. You did a great job with the culture question. I really struggled with that one.

No Trader Joe's near me. And mmm ... key lime pie!

  4. I avoid Trader Joe's like the plague, but I think it's because the people here who frequent it are all idiots. They are impolite, never get out of the way, and the parking lot is full of Priuses. I might be a little angry about it so maybe my opinion doesn't count here, lol.

  5. Thanks for another week of questions. I enjoyed reading your answers and sorry I don't shop Trader Joe's, but I'd be interested in seeing what others get there.

  6. Key lime pie, yessss! Our closest Trader Joe's is 2 hours north in Birmingham, but I miss the recreational shopping it used to afford me back in Arizona. "Two-buck Chuck" was always on the list!

  7. Your weather sounds perfect. I shop at Trader Joe's about every six weeks. I buy my prunes and some other dried fruit there. Only ingredient is prunes and same with the others.I also buy raw nuts. We buy wine there. I like one of their coffee creamers. We are not into most of their fruit and veggies. We can find better elsewhere. We have discovered that their ripple chips for dip and very good. Mark likes some of their green olives in the glass bottles. They also have a great Pita cracker and we love their frozen Mushroom Risotto.

  9. Chicken Piccata -- great choice!! I love Trader Joe's but don't go often. They have great frozen entrees that are often WW friendly and just the right size for two. They also have amazing bouquets of flowers. I bought some really cute Christmas cookies last year for everyone in the office. They were little gingerbread people (I think) and they "hung" on the side of your cup!

  10. We had our biggest snowstorm of this winter yesterday but then today our weather was warm and sunny and mild...so I guess technically March came in like a lamb. I enjoy most citrus fruits but don't like many dishes with citrus fruits in them-- I tend to like most of my fruits fresh.

  11. Interesting how many people commented that grapefruit interferes with a medication. I knew this, but I guess I didn't realize how many people would be affected by it! Loved your short description of February!

  12. I think you are more lucky concerning the weather where you live ! Sometimes I think that my feet will change into flippers ! And when it doesn't rain it is grey and humid. I hope we will have a nice summer. You are lucky that your daughter lives close to you, my family live in Amsterdam so I don't see them very often.
