1. At the end of every year (or at least since the mid-1970's) Lake Superior State University posts a list of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. You can read more about the decision making process here, but this year's list includes-
Which of these words/phrases do you use regularly or even just every now and then? How many did you have to look up? Which of these words would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word/phrase not on the list you'd like to add? If so do share, then tell us why.
I use cringe, 100% and period on occasion, but wouldn't say they're a regular part of my speech. I had to look up the word skibidi. I've never heard it used or used it myself and it's safe to say I have no plans to do so going into the new year.
None of the words bother me too much, but if I have to pick one I'll say I think era has become tiresome.
2. Your favorite soup? Do you make this one yourself or is it from a can?
I love soup and make lots of different kinds this time of year. Hubs would say my vegetable beef soup is one of his favorite meals. Good ol chicken noodle is probably my favorite. I love the way my house smells when a pot of soup is simmering on the stove, and a bowl of homemade chicken soup just says comfort to me. I make my own and that's my preference, but I can eat the canned variety too. I like Progresso's homestyle chicken and noodle if I'm having soup from a can.
3. How do you feel about winter? What's one winter activity you look forward to?
I enjoy the changing seasons and don't mind a little bit of winter in December-January. We have some cold weather here, but it's rare for us to have snow. I miss it a little. Now, I do not like the late snows or a long winter like we had up north, but there's something cozy about a snow day where everyone is in and the world feels quiet. We may have some snow here on Friday, but I'm not holding my breath.
I don't ski anymore and like I said we won't really have snow that amounts to anything here so not a lot of true winter activity. I love a walk in the woods on a winter day and we'll make that happen for sure.
4. The Pantone color of the year for 2025 is mocha mousse (sample pictured here). What say you? The website describes it as 'a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nourishes us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort'. Is this a color I might find in your home or wardrobe? Is it one you might add in some big or small way in the year ahead?
I like this color. I like shades of brown, particularly the darker tones. While I don't have this exact shade I do have something close to it in some of my decor, and I'd definitely wear this color too.
In a similar, but not really vein...if I were to offer you a choice right now of either a cup of mocha or a cup of mousse which would you say yes to?
A cup of mocha please.
5. Which of the following winter related idioms can best be applied to your life in some way right now? Choose one, then tell us why you chose it.
snowed under, on thin ice, tip of the iceberg, chill out, break the ice, snowball effect, not a snowball's chance in hell, get cold feet, the cold shoulder
I'm going to say the snowball effect. Our outdoor project started out as 'landscape the hill', then picked up speed and quickly snowballed into a waterfall, outdoor BBQ bar, patio, and new furniture for all, which somehow also included a new couch for the indoor pool table room too. It's more like snowmageddon as opposed to one little snowball.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
A random throwback to 2014 when we lived in the wilds of New Jersey and had a ridunkulous amount of snow every other day...
And icicles that could literally kill you perched on our gutters...
The neighborhood sky tried to make up for it...
And our Gordon Setter was in her glory...
Happy Wednesday everyone!

I love your description of your landscaping project. I'm sure it's all worth it though - especially with family moving back closer to you. Lovely pictures of when you were in New Jersey. The snow looks so pretty but I'm sure that living with it everyday was not fun.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have to look up any of the words but I do use a lot of them; just not in my everyday speech. We just had chicken noodle soup this week. I love making homemade soup and actually don't like any canned soups now. I love those throwback photos. We're in for some possible snow this weekend too but we'll see..
ReplyDeleteI like the changing of the seasons, too! That is A LOT of snow- and to think of getting that often- no thanks!! That's interesting about your project snowballing. Ours turned out exactly as my husband envisioned it from the get-go though I suppose that for us, buying things for it (though not the scope of the project itself) snowballed. Thanks for the questions and link up :).
ReplyDeleteThe snow is gorgeous!! Also, you deserve extra points for your title today - love it!!
ReplyDeleteI too like the changing of seasons. I also like chicken noodle soup! And I will have a mocha.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the photos today!!
Carla
I like watching snow fall on a cozy day and then having it around for maybe a day? But, then it gets sooooo gross! Eo has made a lot of yellow snow on the porch!
ReplyDeleteI also love smelling soup simmering on a Sunday or a day when I'm home!
I agree with you on the "era" word. I am going to add making some homemade soup to my meal planning for next week. It has been fun for us to see your outdoor project unfold. Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteSnow is so pretty to look at but then I remember how cold it is. No thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to have never heard the word skibidi! That dog is sooo cute.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your homemade soups are delicious! Thanks for the fun link up.
ReplyDeleteYou distracted me with the soup question and that had a snowball effect on my blog. :) Fun photos from New Jersey. Happy winter to you. We might finally do a walk today or tomorrow! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThings can definitely get out of hand with house projects! We're also expecting snow on Friday...not holding my breath, either. :) About that soup...I'd love to have the vegetable soup recipe. Progresso soups are the best, for sure.
ReplyDeleteI’ll have to try the Progresso chicken soup you like - it’s good to have a few convenient cans for when we’re too sick to make soup.

I too use two of the words your picked. Way to go on making soups. I just never got into doing that. Yes, Progresso makes good soups. I hope you get a cozy day of snow to enjoy. That's nice that you wear shades of brown. Wow that definitely is a snowball effect! Enjoyed your photos. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy photos of snow!! I've been in Florida 36 now and have no desire to be where it is cold and snowy. I don't even have winter clothing anymore. I borrowed a jacket from my sister when I was in Ohio last October. Thanks for another fun Hodgepodge, Joyce! Stay warm! I think I'm going to make some soup!! :)
ReplyDeleteFun Hodgepodge this week! Love all of the wintriness, the soups and winter photos! it's C-O-L-D up here in New Hampshire today.
ReplyDeleteI live in eastern NY. We currently have only a dusting of snow. hahah
ReplyDeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE the new color for the year.
I've had icicles like that in my past -- they are pretty scary!
ReplyDeleteLove what you had to say about soups. They really are a comfort food!
I love the photos in your random, especially your dog...She's so beautiful! I had Progresso New England Chowder for lunch and it was delicious!
ReplyDeleteThat last photo really made me smile
ReplyDeleteI love soup too, and chicken noodle is probably my second favorite. Love the photos you shared for #6 ! Thanks for hosting the Hodgepodge! It's always so much fun!
ReplyDeleteA midwesterner misplaced in the south, I miss winter...a little bit...too. I'd like one good 3" snow, just so we know winter was here, and then I'm ready for spring, lol
ReplyDeleteOh my! I've never seen a Gordon setter. He's a stunner! Winter is the least fave of my seasons but I'd still rather have winter and the three others than no change at all! I need to subscribe here by email. Lovely posts, all.
ReplyDeleteYour snowball effect is a lot of work I'm sure, but how lovely once it's complete. It sounds like a dream backyard!
ReplyDeleteBlessings~
Finally getting around to commenting from last week. Love the photo of the sunset and your gordon setter (I always wanted one of those dogs). Loved your answers.
