Friday at Five

Mommy's Idea

It's still Friday and I have a head full of fragments...what better place to drop them than right here?  I don't really have anything of substance to say but,  a) when have I ever let a little thing like no substance keep me from blogging?,  and 2) I'm trying to get back in the writing groove which I think we can all agree is no easy feat post-Christmas.

I had a dozen women here for lunch today and I didn't cook a thing. I hosted our Gourmet Group and the great thing about hosting is no cooking. Your house is the venue and all you're required to provide are the beverages. I knew hosting in early January would motivate me to get every single solitary Christmas item packed up and put away, and on top of that my house would also get cleaned.

Ta-da!...it's done!

Speaking of yummy recipes, when daughter2 was home we made a delicious avocado-shrimp-grapefruit salad we'd seen on Pinterest, and it was a keeper.  The shrimp would have been delicious over pasta, but I suppose greens were the better option following a month of sugar cookies.  Sigh.

You'll find the recipe here.

I'm reading The House of Tyneford by Natasha Solomons in case anyone is interested. If you're a fan of Downton Abbey you would probably enjoy this book too.

My car is at the dealer today getting new tires so I have a loaner vehicle.  I'm not always good at noticing when something needs repairing on my vehicle.  Hubs will get in and say, 'How long has it been making that noise?' and I'll say, 'What noise?'  That answer frustrates him just a little-Ha!

Anyway, the dealer called and they will need to keep the car through the weekend which means I have to drive this loaner vehicle for a couple more days.  I really try not to drive the loaner vehicle anywhere except to/from the dealer which means hubs and I have to go out for breakfast tomorrow.

Here's how I made that happen-I was going to run to the store after picking up my car, but now I'm not picking up my car so there won't be any cream in the house for tomorrow morning's coffee.  I used the last of the cream at my luncheon today and Voila!...breakfast out.

We rented Salmon Fishing in the Yemen while Daughter2 was home, and watched it over the New Year's weekend. We all liked it a lot. I'd read the book, but the movie didn't get much publicity so I'd kind of forgotten I wanted to see it.  Sweet story and I'm a big fan of Emily Blunt.

In other Pinterest news...my daughter2 showed me something she'd seen that she thought was a cute idea for parents of young children.  Trace your child's hand on paper, write a bible verse you want to pray for them across the palm, and then keep it in your bible so you'll remember to do just that.

Hey, you're never too old to have your hand traced....

Or to benefit from a mother's prayers.

Rain is moving our way this weekend, but not until Sunday.  That means I should be able to squeeze in both a walk and a nap.

Housework, weather, car repairs...you're glad you stopped by here today, aren't you?

  3. I agree about not wanting to drive a loaner car. I'm scared to death I'll have an accident in it.

  4. I drink black coffee but going out for breakfast is a good treat. I am the opposite on the loaner cars. The last time I had one, it was very new and I would have gladly kept it all weekend and maybe do a short road trip. It's like a free rental car. I'm probably the same on the car repairs. Odd noise, turn up the radio, see if it's still there a week later.

  5. I am sorry I missed hodgepodge this week. My life got out of control a little. I will try to be back for next week.

  6. My car got a new battery today...fortunately at no cost to me (do you know how much batteries cost these days?)because something was wrong with the new one I got a few months ago. No loaner car for me since it only took them about 10 minutes to make the switch. My daughter had a loaner car a few weeks ago, some kind of very fancy Lincoln SUV....she was very sad when she had to give it back and take home her Ford Explorer.

  7. I am always glad I stopped by here! I keep forgetting about Friday Fragments- I need to do this again. I'm afraid my fragment today would be one big, long rant, so maybe I'll hold off. DoodleBug had her first day of student teaching today- I called my parents and asked them to pray for her- your never too old to have grandparents pray for you either, eh? :)

  8. Tracing your child's hand and putting that (along with the Bible verse) is definitely not something they should outgrow. I have little bits of things the kids have written for me in my Bible. Cherish them.

I'm going to look into the movie. Love Emily Blunt!! First saw her on a Foyle's War and then Young Victoria. And of course, you must know by now that I'm a huge Downton Abbey fan. I even made two Downton Abbey homemade soaps - Lady Mary and Oh, Matthew! LOL Masterpiece on Sunday night is definitely our only 'appointment TV'. :-)

  9. I'd drive the loaner car, especially if it's some sporty thing I don't usually get to drive. I have the same problem with my car, I was driving on bold tires last month and didn't even know it. The again, that's what husbands are for, aren't they? Have a good weekend! :)

  10. I am the one who hears the noises first with our cars. Going out to breakfast is one of my husband's favorite things, so it wouldn't matter about the coffee. And I don't like driving loaner or rental cars either. I am so nervous that someone will put a ding in it.

  11. I don't like driving loner cars either. It happens to me a lot though because my husband works at a dealership. Just when I get used to a car he gets another.
I thought I was the only one who scheduled events at home so I had to undecorate.
I LOVE the little hand idea, I am going to do one for each of my 13 grandbabes. They get so excited when I do anything with their name on it.
It sounds like you enjoyed have your daughter home:)
    Have a great weekend.

  12. Always glad when I drop by here.......We've had enough rain the past 3 weeks for the whole world I think. And, more is coming tomorrow and I hate that. Tomorrow is the funeral of my dear friend and I hope the rain holds off until after the burial.Have a good weekend, and do get a nap!

  14. Stinks when your car needs repairs. My air bag light as been on for weeks.....it doesn't seem like it will interfere with the driving functions so I keep driving it. My hubs is going out of town and he always drives my car to airport and leaves it so I can have a 4 wheel drive incase it snows...I know I'm gonna get that dreaded question....how long has this light been on?? Oops! Have a great weekend!

  15. I completely understand your reasoning for having to go out for breakfast. Who wouldn't?

  17. Ah, this is real life. It would be interesting if life went from one bloggable event to the next - but also EXHAUSTING. Hope you enjoyed your breakfast. I think it's my favorite meal to eat out.

  18. Hosted Katie's 11th birthday party today after coming back from vacation 36 hours earlier. I was motivated to get Christmas packed away and get the house clean too! Got it done! Yay!

Love the handprint Bible verse. Will borrow that idea.

  19. I have had my eye on the salad! Yum! I just love how having guests over motivates me to clean my house. I really should entertain more often. :)

  22. I'm always glad I stopped by! We didn't get the rain but we did have fog and everyone knows that fog eats snow so most of ours is GONE😄😄😄😄😄

  23. Now that's the kind of party I want to have. Everyone else brings something! I saw that movie at the show and also enjoyed it. Now I have a bunch to see before the Academy Awards.
